The Easter weekend is over, and that means the UK boxed charts are in. It's been another quiet week for Nintendo, with two of the Big N's major titles still making the top ten. And it's another case of the usual suspects.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey charted in fourth and tenth respectively, with Mario Kart scooting up a place and Odyssey slipping down two. We've seen Super Mario Odyssey sales jump up thanks to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and we wonder if this streak will continue.
The rest of the charts, however, are dominated by PS5 and sports titles. This week, FIFA 23 is top of the pile, with 46% of sales coming from the PS5 version, and 26% for the Switch version. Last week's number one, Resident Evil 4, is now in second, but still continues to sell well.
The Last of Us Part II has seen an huge jump in sales, coming from 30th last week to 5th this week — we wonder if lots of people finished Part I after HBO's acclaimed The Last of Us show, and are now moving onto the sequel? The only new release in the top ten is EA Sports PGA Tour, which launched on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 7th April.
Nintendo has plenty of games in the UK top 40, however, with Minecraft just slipping outside the top ten, and Pokémon Scarlet & Violet still remaining (in 21st and 16th, respectively). Metroid Prime Remastered also remains in the top 40, though it's slipped down to 31st.
Here's this week's top ten in full:

A lot of people buying The Last of Us Part 2 due to the tv series are about to be very disappointed.
I'm really enjoying the Resident Evil 4 remake on PS5. A little surprised there isn't a boom on Mario game sales what with the success of the movie. Maybe next week? Then again, who doesn't own a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at this point haha.
It's nice to see Odyssey charting again. The movie definitely helped get people interested.
@Jireland92 I don't know man. Lots of people really love part 2 and while it is a divisive title among enthusiast gamers, I don't think the broader audience will have anything like the bad reaction to it.
It is after all still a very good action/horror/survival game at its core whatever criticisms you have of it.
After that powerful march (Theathrythm, Yomawari, Metroid Prime), april is very serene
@ComfyAko
Advance Wars 1+2 Reboot Camp releases April 21st, as well as Minecraft Legends Deluxe Edition on April 18th, so that'll be Nintendo's April charts presence.
Naturally, The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom will be Nintendo's chart topper for the week of May 12th.
@RainbowStarFlower I am surprised Nintendo didn’t launch a Mario game with the movie….
Well, I mean, is it a shock when there’s few new releases? I’m curious how Advance Wars will do. Hopefully it tops the charts.
@RupeeClock Probably, although I think some people just bought the cheaper ds version on Wii U. I hope it sells well, though.. Zelda will probably stay on top of the chart until the end of the year.
Last of Us II was £8 in Game when I went in last week. Already got it and enjoyed it, but anyone who was on the fence would have had it at that price.
Time for a direct to wake up the consumers
@rockodoodle I totally would have. Maybe give Mario + Rabbids a little nudge-nudge too.
Classic Nintendo though haha. At the same time, can't argue with the results. The Mario movie is doing so well! No doubt it will have a positive impact on Mario's next video game.
@ComfyAko
It's a remake of a fan favourite pair of games for a much more popular system. As momentus as the Wii U eShop closure was, I don't think it'll be comparable to a new game release on Nintendo's blockbuster Switch system.
@Wheatly There a plenty of people who did enjoy it. Problem with youtube and twitter is it can give off the impression that outrage clickbait are truth speakers.
@Vexx234 Yeah I agree.
And as always with these polarised views the truth is usually somewhere in the middle i.e. it is neither masterpiece nor garbage.
As long as GTA V is not in the top 10, I'm happy. Kinda surprised by how low Grand Turismo 7 debuted, that's pretty odd. Looking forward to Star Wars Jedi Survivor and Zelda TOTK battling for the top spots next month.
@RupeeClock yeah, I don't doubt it's gonna be popular, although I can see how many people would prefer the originals just for the graphics. It probably won't impede the sales that much, though.
Nothing new to top the charts with… well why not release a new game everyone would love, like Tomodachi Life for Switch?
Does EA's PGA Tour game carry the likenesses of the LIV golfers? I know they have more than a contentious relationship. I also know the guys who signed to LIV are very popular golfers people want to play.
The video on EA's site make the game look pretty dern good tbh.
I frequent hotukdeals daily and loads of outlets (Argos, Smyths, GAME) have Last of Us 2 for £7.99.
I played the first remastered on PS4 and snapped this up back when £15 sounded like a steal… so a no brainer. Doesn’t mean I’ve got round to playing it, however!
@Wheatly to be honest, most gamers will probably like it, but I don’t think they’ll love it. I think the general consensus after the dust has settled is that the game is pretty mid. Good graphics and gameplay, but a mediocre story. Obviously there are those that love it, but I don’t know if it’s held up as the masterpiece the first game is held as.
@Jireland92 Played both games and honestly both are mediocre storywise.
@Jireland92 I'm of the opinion that it sits around a 7ish. Too long, story is pretty by the numbers 'an eye for an eye makes everyone blind' morality tale which fails to explore any of its more meaningful elements in any detail.
I was always of the opinion that most of Sony's stuff is carried by the characters rather than the stories themselves which are always pretty basic and TLOU p2 just makes too many of them unlikeable and by the end I was fine with everyone bar Lev dying.
I agree that I don't think the long term view of it will be anything like the masterpiece that some of Sony's more hardcore fans would have you believe.
I would really like to know who these people are that keep buying Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. For a game that’s almost 6 years old now and been a holiday pack in title for every holiday season who doesn’t own this game by now??? I mean are these people who keep losing their game cartridge or something? I love the game but honestly wish it would stop selling so much now so Nintendo has some incentive to finally give us Mario Kart 9. I’m just hoping that the current dlc doesn’t mean that we are going to be waiting years into the next console cycle for a proper new Mario Kart.
@Kiyata
imagine if a new tomodachi life used the expanded mii creator from the miitopia switch port and even let you carry over miis from that game.
@RupeeClock
I feel like Advance Wars was always more of a niche game compared to all of Nintendo's usual fare. Of course I have fond memories of passing a GBA around with the boys playing the original two games but I always felt like the series never really got the attention it deserved.
@Darthmoogle there are well over 100 million Nintendo Switch in consumer’s hands, and while Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a very impressive attach rate, there are still way more people that don’t have it for Switch than do. Are people really surprised it sells so well week in and week out? There are always new systems being sold, and every new owner is a potential, indeed likely, MK8D buyer 🤷♂️
Happy to see at least Odyssey still in the top 10 this week!
@Darthmoogle Yeah, agree. Why Super Mario Odyssey don't have sales like MK8D's!? Super Mario Odyssey is the game for everyone! While MK8D is a racing game. Racing games have annoying AI. And racing games are hard, imo.
@JohnnyMind Yeah. Wish Super Mario Odyssey sold like a MK8D...
Easter sale catapulted The Last of Us Part II, not the HBO show (whose season ended a month ago).
It's like people don't play games in the UK. I mean, I grew up here, and live here, but Fifa constantly topping the UK charts isn't something to be proud of in terms of cultural richness and love of art. It doesn't make the UK look good, but then, I guess that reflects the reality.
@Mgalens that would be awesome, and a good selling point too, having them work that way, because the same was true of both on 3ds! It’s odd they chose miitopia over Tomodachi life as the first to release on switch tho. It was not nearly as popular but I do love that game anyway.
There haven't exactly been a whole lot of big releases from Nintendo recently. I am more interested in seeing how long The Legend of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom stays in the top slots after it launches!
Nintendo desperately needs something exciting happening to their hardware, I think Tears of the Kingdom is going to be one of the Switch's last headliner titles along with Metroid Prime 4.
@Vyacheslav333 It's good, people can like it but it's just another adventure game. A quick 5 or 10 minute arcade racer is a lot easier to get into than a sprawling multi-hour long adventure. And aside from Balloon World it's not a very competitive game, it barely has multiplayer, Mario Kart however is a party. If you had a kid, either game would make sense, but if you had 2 or more kids and only 1 Switch, Mario Kart is an obvious choice as it will keep up to 4 players entertained at once.
People should get both as they're both great games, but I don't think it should be surprising that Mario Kart did better. Besides Mario racer fans get Mario Kart, Mario platform fans will get Odyssey or 3D World or New SMB U or Super Mario Maker 2 so unless they can afford them all they have ~25% chance of choosing Odyssey wheras Kart has no competition in the Mario racers niche (excluding Nintendo Online), so it's an obvious pick up.
@Wheatly
I agree. I hated TLoU 2's story but it's easy to see why people not as heavily invested would like it. And even I'd still recommend it to people for the great world building (many buildings seem to have some sort of story to tell) and fantastic gunplay and melee combat. It's the opposite of TLoU 1 which, imo, had a great story but passable gameplay at best.
I have long believed that as time goes on people would get more accustomed to the “controversial element” of the last of us 2 and it would become more popular
@Vyacheslav333 I love Mario Kart 8. Any 3d adventure game (including any Mario 3D, Zelda 3D, Ratchet and clank, Spyro the Dragon ...etc...) makes me sleepy. I get bored, I don't have fun, I find it very, very boring.
