Re: Review: Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Switch) - Still Out Of This World

Imagine if this had been EA or Take-Two; it would have been docked points for how cynical the release is.

These games were available for a tenner each at different periods on Wii U. This is pure nickel-and-diming and I’ll be sticking with my Wii copies as a result. But it’s one rule for Nintendo and another for everyone else.

They are amazing games, two of my favourites of all time. I just really don’t see how people can defend this release.

Re: Publishers Are "Thanking" Nintendo For Game-Key Cards On Switch 2

@Andee This is the main point. My daughters don’t care about game preservation. My brothers in law who play FIFA and COD don’t care. It’s an extremely specific demographic of 30+ neckbeards (of which I am one) that care. Physical games (and ownership) are on the way out, downloads and EULAs are the future.

Re: Zelda: BOTW Switch 2 Edition Won't Include The DLC, Nintendo Confirms

@Reztobi Exactly how I feel. Nintendo have always been like this though. Success against the odds followed by total anti-consumer complacency, followed by a generation of trying to claw back goodwill. Wii to Wii U, DS to 3DS. Always the same pattern.

Like you say, they’re priming themselves for failure. It’s anecdotal, but my siblings and their families have 5 switches between them. The only talk of Switch 2 in the family so far has been discussing what a ridiculous price Nintendo are asking.

Re: First Impressions: Nintendo Switch 2 'Wows' Most When You Go Back To Your Old Switch

The price has more or less killed my excitement. I have bought every console day one since the GameCube in 2001, and this is the first time I’ve thought about giving it a miss.

I moved to the Nordics in 2016 and have become used to being gouged (I live in an unfavourable market and the SEK has been in the toilet for 5 years), so I am fully expecting this to end up at around 5500-6000kr. And that’s before I buy any extras. And I think that’s too much. Mario Kart is likely going to cost 1000kr.

The more I think about it, the more I think I’m going to back out on this one. Great news for you all that are excited, but I think we might have crossed a line for me.

Re: Tech Fans Have Gone Full 'Layton' In Analysing The 'Switch 2' Motherboard

@nocdaes I think you should think about it.

Nintendo never uses bleeding edge technology in it’s raw specs. Some connectivity gubbins perhaps, but never raw power. At least not since the GameCube.

Technology is only getting incrementally better. The measuring stick for inprovements is so short now that Sony has released a ”Pro” PS5 before there is even any sort of open-and-shut showcase for what the base console can do over a PS4.

A 3-4 year old chipset is absolutely what I’d expect from Nintendo, and people who were expecting a 2024 3nm silicon have no idea what Nintendo is about. Cheap, standard components with low-ish power draw is the balance they always strive for and 5nm (which the post since has been corrected to) will do that job just fine.

I think the leaks are bang on the money, and it will be disappointing to some; but then wishful thinking when it comes to new console specs is nothing new.

Re: Feature: 10 Years Ago, Nintendo Launched The Very Best 3DS

I have the Ambassador New 3DS and a “regular” red N3DSXL and that line of consoles is probably my favourite ever, together with the Dreamcast.

I know a lot has been written about it (here and in other places), but for me Streetpass kept me taking my console with me wherever I went, for years. I’m amazed Nintendo didn’t see the value in bringing similar functionality to the Switch, actually.

Re: Japanese Charts: Unicorn Overlord Maintains Its Lead Over Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

I got the CE of UE and it’s lovely. The card game is really good too. The game is pretty exploitable, but it’s great fun noodling around in the menus creating super-squads. There are so many possibilities and active and passive buffs and effects that just doing mock battles with my creations is great fun in and of itself.

I feel like both FFVII (which I am also really, really enjoying) and UE are going to keep me going until at least the summer. What a great start to the year for RPG fans.

Re: Final Fantasy's Pixel Remaster Series Has Now Sold Three Million Copies

vyseofhr

I have the physical version of the Pixel Remasters and as a collector’s piece it’s really nice. The remasters really do look great on the OLED Switch and the remastered soundtracks are universally excellent.

One thing that really, really irks me though is that I have six FF icons for all of the different games. They’re pretty uniform, which is nice, but would it really have been so much more effort to have a menu on the cart on startup to choose which FF you wanted to play? It makes the collection feel like a ROM dump rather than a premium celebration of old FF games. I’m aware that it’s a total nitpick, but it cheapens it a little for me.
