As a Hollow Knight nut, I very much approve of this article helping me not overlook something. I'm going to look into Fling to the Finish for sure. Mandragora and Splatterbot also look to have potential.
I used to own this on N64 and can honestly say I've rarely hated a game so much. I owned exactly 64 games on N64 and this is probably in the bottom 3. 😄
Some people REALLY like it though, but I could never come to grips with the controls (at least not well enough for how challenging the game was).
Most hyped release ever for me personally. But I've gotten so used to waiting... it still doesn't feel real that I'll be playing this in a couple days. I almost got attached to this game being a mythical "someday."
I enjoyed this game and its sequel WAY more than I expected. Definitely the best if you're playing it with some friends or your kids. Its a great social game since everyone can get in on trying to find the anomalies.
The next game from this team looks really interesting as well.
@DennyCrane Honestly, I felt that way after my first playthrough of Hollow Knight. It felt much too bloated and I got to a point where I was just ready to be done with it.
Somehow, though, it was on my second playthrough when I focused on actually exploring every nook and cranny and collecting everything and beating everything... that's when the game clicked for me and I actually came to appreciate its massive size.
@LastFootnote
Thankfully, most games on UFO 50 don't really appeal to me. So I'm just focused on the ones I do like. So far that is Pingolf, Warptank, Pilot Quest, Mooncat, and Campanella. I still have about half of them left to try though 🙃
I definitely understand people liking SotN so much. I'm probably unjustly harsh on it because it was such a disappointment for me. It's not a bad game... it just didn't meet my personal expectations, and a lot of that was all the hype that surrounds the game.
@The_Nintendo_Pedant
I played both Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night just a few years after they came out. They were some of the first Metroidvania games I ever played.
Super Metroid I do enjoy and have replayed several times. I certainly think that at the time of release it was one of the greatest games ever made. I just think it's overhyped as the pinnacle of the genre considering I think it has been far surpassed many times over (including by its own franchise).
SotN I owned on PS1 and beat it, but I think it's pretty bottom tier for the genre. I know that's a super unpopular opinion but I've never understood the love for that game. Combat feels unsatisfying due to enemy sprites having no response or knockback, plus the map is super boring to me. It just doesn't compel me to WANT to explore every nook and cranny, which is what I look for in the genre. I feel the same about Aria of Sorrow, which I owned and beat back in the GBA days but found underwhelming.
Metroidvania games are my favorite genre and Hollow Knight is easily my favorite. Other favorites are:
Animal Well Astalon: Tears of the Earth
Axiom Verge
Metroid Dread
Metroid Fusion Metroid Prime 2:Echoes
Metroid Zero Mission
Ori 1 & 2
Pipistrello Shadow Man
Teslagrad
@The_Nintendo_Pedant See, I'm the opposite. As a Metroidvania fan, I find Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night insanely overrated [particularly SotN], whereas HK I consider the definitive experience in the genre. But I suppose it's all subjective and down to what you want out from the experience.
@Smithicus That's a valid perspective, but for the many fans of HK who think it's truly the pinnacle gaming experience, Silksong will be the only game we can think about playing for months.
Hollow Knight is my favorite game of all time. I was sold enough on the concept that I helped Kickstart it, which I never do.
My excitement for Silksong couldn't be greater.
Since I just finished replaying Shadow of the Colossus, now I'm in the mood to replay Praey for the Gods.
If there's time, I'll also play some more UFO 50.
@silver-crescent I'm curious which Metroidvania games would you put on par w/ Hollow Knight? I'm always looking for good recommendations.
For me, the only ones that come remotely close are Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission, Axiom Verge, and Astalon: Tears of the Earth.
From my standpoint, HK is really in a league of its own, but of course it's all up to personal taste.
@LastFootnote I don't think it's fair to hold the developers responsible for the fan base. That's like holding any music artist responsible for their terrible fans. Team Cherry had every right to be silent and keep their heads down while focused on making the game. Honestly, people could have been just as toxic even with regular updates.
@Galaxy2IsTheGOAT With Hollow Knight they released multiple DLCs but they were free and flawlessly integrated into the base game. If they handle Silksong similarly, then we shouldn't have anything to worry about.
FYI, I just received a Kickstarter email from Team Cherry confirming that they'll be sending the original Hollow Knight supporters a free download key for Silksong.
Of course, I'll still buy the physical copy when it releases, but I'm grateful for them keeping their word to the original backers.

I'm so glad I bought this on Gamecube back when it released. Happy to have supported this overlooked gem.
This is one of the only games to actually make me care about the characters, dialogue, plot, etc. I'm normally a gameplay-focused gamer, but there is something really immersive about the drama of this game. It's really special.
This looks great, but I hope it doesn't have the rubber-banding and artificial events of Cruis'n Blast. I loved that game until I started realizing how it was constructed and then the cracks started to show.
This game could not have been a bigger surprise for me. I avoided it for several years because the Toad levels on 3D World didn't impress me.
When I finally bought the game earlier this year (just on a whim to try something different), I was FULLY hooked. One of the best games on Switch for sure.
@Freek You may be the first person I've found in 25 years who also liked Tonic Trouble 😄 That game gets criticized a lot, but I really enjoyed it back in the N64 days. Never could get into Rayman 2 (which is supposedly the far superior game) but I was fully hooked on Tonic Trouble.
This should have dropped amiibo functionality and cost $20. Maybe $30 at the most. At that price point, they'd sell like crazy. At this high price point, only collectors will be interested.
I love a good world map! Super Mario World, Super Mario Land 2, Donkey Kong Country 1-3, Wario Land, etc
Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I can't stand the Link to the Past map, simply because of the way it's a flat 3d image. It has always given me a weird, gross feeling. Am I the only one?
Playing Metal Gear Solid 3 on the Master Collection. Just finished MGS1 and 2 this week. The amount of hate I've seen for the Master Collection is completely overblown. These games all play great and just like I remember on PS1/PS2. Any graphical nitpicks in comparison videos are completely irrelevant when actually playing. Although I am playing in handheld, so maybe docked is more problematic?
Woah, did I miss an announcement that Ultros is headed to Switch? I haven't played it but I remember seeing it quite a while ago and it looked interesting. But I thought it was Sony exclusive or something.
I'm so glad you reviewed this one, as I've been really curious about it.
I'm just curious to know more about the mature content. Not all nudity is created equal. Are we talking laughing at a plumber crack? Or are we talking porn? Likewise with the alcohol/drug use... how are these things presented?
Cato:Buttered Cat An absolutely brilliant puzzle platformer that may just be the best game Nintendolife hasn't ever reviewed. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Re: Round Up: Pour One Out For These 6 Brave Games Launching On 'Silksong Day'
@Max_the_German Oh that's right! First Horizon launched in the shadow of Botw and the second Horizon launched in the shadow of Elden Ring.

We'll have a September Direct announcing a December release date for Prime 4.
Prime 2 & 3 will shadow drop in September after that Direct.

Elden Ring runs 60fps on my Steam Deck. Isn't Switch 2 more powerful? I haven't really kept up w/ specs lately.

I bought 4 copies. Kickstarter digital Steam copy, Steam digital copy for my brother, Switch digital, and Switch physical.
I don't normally do that but this is my favorite game of all time.
