If you've gone the digital route this generation, you'll be relieved to hear Super Mario Maker 2 won't take up too much space on your Switch when it arrives next month. With the pre-purchase now live, it's been confirmed the file size is a total of 2.8GB.
As tiny as this is when compared to certain other Switch releases, it's still close to twice the size of the original game's digital version released on the Wii U. The first Super Mario Maker required close to 1.5GB of free space. So in other words, the second game has double the amount of content in it! We suspect the new Super Mario 3D World game style, story mode and multiplayer have all contributed to this, along with the new recordings from the Super Mario series composer, Koji Kondo.
Super Mario Maker 2 releases on 28th June. You can purchase either the standard digital copy for $59.99 or the bundle including a 12-month Nintendo Switch online subscription for $69.99.

That's understandable, this game is more than twice the awesomeness of the original.
Day one digital download, cannot wait. I spent around 200 hours with the original, probably a 50/50 split between creating and playing. I never intended to create levels when I bought the game but it was so much fun to do. I just hope the sequel makes it a little easier for your levels to be discovered. I had 2 or 3 creations that I was fairly proud of yet they were played by so few. One level I spent around 10 hours creating was eventually removed after being played by no more than 20 people, most of those were NL members. It was a Metroidvania style level called 'My Shell Ma Belle'. The title alone should have attracted some Beatles fans but nope.
It's a good feeling seeing people completing and leaving positive comments on a level you spent many hours creating. So hopefully our good levels will get a little more love this time.
@Timsworld2 Yep Miiverse was at its best with Mario Maker. It's a shame they just ended it, rather than make it into something better.
Oh right, Wii U and 3DS versions...I was about to say, I saw custom comments at 12:33 for this game
@OorWullie I feel your pain. I hope the level sharing is more enjoyable this time around altogether.
I have never played a mario maker game for some reason but I'm tempted to get this one because all the added content and the story mode. Maybe not day one because I have some games I want to finish before getting anything new.
I'll have to find room on either the 512GB or 400GB SD card I have dedicated solely to my Switch.
@ReaderRagfish Oops,meant to say playing.
I'll still be making Smash stages when this comes out.
...that doesn't mean its double the amount of content. What even lol.
All I cared for from it was the MP.
Once I figure out if Amazon's pre-order comes with the stylus, I'm definitely picking this up!
Otherwise, I'll just buy a stylus separately.
@EasyDaRon It's for advertising so you click into as many pages as possible. Such is life on a free website.
Well you can buy 1TB MicroSD cards now.
2.8GB actually feels small for a game with this amount of content.
Actually it's going to take up 0GB of hard space on my Switch Because I bought it Physically.
If online sharing/usability is poorly implemented, this game's potential will be severely hindered yet again 🤔
I know @sanderev and the 1TB cards are so cheap on Ebay & Amazon at $39 to $49.
Edit: DO NOT BUY the cheap 1 Teyarabyte Cards on Ebay & Amazon THEY ARE 100% FAKE.
@BacklogBlues There are real ones now They are quite expensive, though.
Yea @sanderev their like $350 U.S or so. I want one so bad, but i'll have to wait till they get to $150 or less.
EDIT:$450
So to play with the user created courses you need NinOnline? Guess this will be a pass from me then
@zonks Yeah, screw NSO! Cheap and useless, that's what it is!
@EasyDaRon More clicks and ad exposure, but also a chance to have comments and discussion focused on each of the many different new facts about the game, which is just fine by me because one article with all the facts will usually get bogged down on one (often sensational but silly) issue and the issues will get lost in the reactionary comments.
Is the online service required for level sharing, or is it just for multplayer? If it's required for basic level sharing then that's a deal-breaker in my book.
@zonks For what it's worth, the game comes with a free year of NSO, effectively making the subscription free or the game $40.
Granted, this is a way to get people in. But a full year is enough to get your fill of Mario Maker before deciding whether you want to continue subbing or not
EDIT: I math'd wrong. You're either saving $10 on the game or sub with the bundle.
me: sees 2.8 g knows that he only has 1.4g rushing to delete stuff
@DTFaux Or, you math'd wrong if 2 or 3 people want to play the game b/c so far I haven't seen an offer for the $35 Family Plan and I have two sons and myself who want to play this. So, $60 for the game and $35 for online = $95. Yes, it's cheaper than paying $20 online for each of us but since we only 1 have Switch and will have to share it I really think it needs to be $20 per Switch, $35 for the Family plan for a family w/ more than 1 Switch. And so far it looks like no couch co-op to play so Nintnedo is trying to get us to buy more than 1 Switch for this game as well as online.
I'm going to hold off on pre-ordering it until we get all of the info. I'm not paying $35 for online so my 2 sons and I can create levels together but we need to play those levels online w/ other people, not on the couch. That's just stupid. N64 had plenty of 4 player splitscreen games, it's been 25 years.
Hmm, I wonder if you can add the bundle pricing onto the regular game purchase after the fact. I intended to do the bundle, but I didn't see any option for it, so I just did the $59.99 that was available.
And now the icon has joined my lineup, so along with Cuphead there's a lot of yellow going on there.
@BacklogBlues
It might take up 0 space at first, but if it follows the first game and adds any additional tools or elements it'll take up a little bit then. Not to mention saving any levels you make or download.
I would have poked that goomba tower...I’m terrible, I know.
How dare you @Jimsbo prove me wrong? I say good day, i said good day.
@sanderev Actually feels small? It's ludicrously small. Some games these days are 150gb.
I'll be getting digital for this one. I have a 400GB microSD card so I'm not worried. I'll also be going for those game vouchers on Nintendo Switch Online to use towards this and Animal Crossing when it comes out. Still cheaper than buying both games separately.
I really hope this game does not include an art book like the first one, because I want it digital.
Are costumes returning in this sequel? They looked like the coolest part of the original!
Im thinking of getting the bundle so i can get a year membership
@Deltath Even with the 3D World stuff, this still is a low poly 2D game with most game styles using sprites. I think the meat of the data would be stuff like audio / effects and such. And ofcourse the 2.5D 3D World stuff.
@JMR_Alden We haven't seen anything that would suggest that costumes will return. They might be hiding it to be revealed later, but I doubt it. Also costumes were exclusive to the SMB style, MM2 seems to me that the "normal" styles all have the same elements.
@DarthFoxMcCloud I'm doing the same! Both Maker 2 and AC are prime candidates to be digital. And the vouchers are a nice way to save some cash.
Dang. I was hoping someone else had the same issue trying to get the bundle and found out exactly if/how to upgrade just getting the pre-loaded game only. The online service wasn't enticing enough for me for other titles, but I'm going to want it for this (still hoping they'll be less trigger-happy with the delete level button this time, though).
I guess I'll look into this weekend. Maybe if you select the whole bundle it will just know if you already paid for the game?
