To be fair, I reckon a live action Sonic film has a better chance of being enjoyable in a 'so bad it's good' way than as a legitimately good piece of filmmaking. I mean, it's about a hedgehog who looks nothing like a hedgehog (why is he bright blue?!) and his fairly annoying bunch of friends running around really quickly and battling a fat bald man who seems to have it in for little bunnies. How do you make a good film out of that?!

Y'know, Jim Carrey I can get on board with. I actually he think he looks good. But that CGI Sonic is a horror from my worst nightmares. What is up with those weird lips of his!?

Checked it out on youtube. The trailer is surprisingly good - better then I expected. And Sonic doesn't look "that" bad. Still kinda jarring but I could live with it now that I've seen it. BUT WHY ARE HIS ARMS FURRY!?

Looks like an horrifying Sonic movie with an horrifying 3D model of ...something that barely resemble Sonic, but Carrey as Eggman was great as I hoped at least!

Indeed here the first sign you're doing a Sonic Movie wrong, Sonic is awful and uninteresting while Eggman is charming and fun (and let's not talk about Sonic going full Pikachu with being an electric mouse monster, cause that's what Sonic was missing! Of course!).

I would have preferred a full CG movie, the could have used the same cast to do voice work and kept the characters closer to their original designs.

As I expected, Sonic was weird, Jim Carrey was amazing as always, and overall it looks meh.

I just searched "Sonic Movie" on YouTube TV before coming here. Glad I waited for a trailer before forming an opinion, the movie looks fun. That last scene with Dr. Eggman caught my attention.

I was holding out hope that Sonic design could work, but it is in an unfortunate spot where they made decisions to make him more credible anatomically, but he remains unbelievable as a realistic being in the movie anyway. So... either more realistic or totally like his original design would have been better. Kind of like a cartoon/game uncanny valley.

Jim Carey as Robotnik works just fine for me, though. I will admit I have no major Sonic fandom on the line.

Jim Carrey is shaping up to be the best part of the movie...and I don't even like Jim Carrey!

I mean, I knew this was gonna be bad, but I don't think this even qualifies as bad. This is on a whole other level!

So I'm guessing that last part where Jim Carrey actually look like Robotnik will be in the last five seconds of the movie.

I'm sorry but it looked hilarious. Pretty much what I expected, since they have to modernize it for a large casual audience. The humor is there and the scene where he puts Sonic in the bag and says it's a child but it's not his made me laugh out loud for real. Most likely gonna watch it.

It'll be another the-mundane-meets-the-extraordinary origin story, shoved into a three-acts locker with the frantic elegance of a teenager who's late for class, but DANG do I wanna see Carrey play this properly megalomanic version of Eggman!

A couple of things :

1) The Sonic CGI looks terrible. I'm sure they could have done better and maybe they'll be some post production to shore it up. But his look isn't necessarily bad. It's just the CGI

2) I have absolutely no clue what Gangsta's Paradise has to do with Sonic. Like, nothing I can remember from the 90's seems to correlate the two. So that's an odd choice of song for the trailer.

With that being said, I'm hoping for a decently written movie. I also think Jim Carrey will be the highlight of this movie. This is a huge wait and see what the general reaction is before even thinking catching this in the theater

Jim's as enjoyable to watch as ever, but I'm not sure if that will be enough to Carrey the film.

Apart from the designs they nailed the personality of both eggman and sonic.

I don't get it. What was wrong with that? I liked it.

I actually like it a lot! Outside of a few moments it looks pretty natural. This honestly looks great! The spindash in particular looks promising, and the Rings seem to work how they did in the Archie comics to an extent. My only real issue is how they didn't just use sonic's normal voice actor, but this works okay.

That looks absolutely terrible, and not just because Sonic looks like a child in a bad fancy dress outfit.

Yeah I don't know, they seem to be turning this into another generic ''I'm an alien and I must save your planet but oh nobody can find out about me'' kind of thing and... come on, that's just not Sonic. Sonic is all alone too, where's at the very least Tails? ...not that I'd wanna see what they would do to Tails, seeing how Sonic looks here.

Probably going to watch this on DVD sometime or something but only because Jim Carrey is always fun to watch, not so much for the Sonic portion.

Don’t know why studios think they have to have human characters for all these video game adaptations rather than respecting the original universe but it looks so bad, it might be enjoyable.

Really don't like the look for Sonic. And the movie doesn't look as intriguing as Detective Pikachu does. I don't know, I think I'll be giving this one a hard-pass. Definitely not going to the theatres to see it. Maybe when it comes to Netflix.

That looks so bad that it goes beyond so bad it's good into it should have been aborted and buried. Jim Carrey is a bad fit, and had has not been funny for over a decade turned into a deranged humorless activist. Sonic is a bit creepy really, could be worse, but there's so much wrong here outside of a pack of 5 year olds and the parents who could tolerate taking them to this I don't see it going well.

I really don't like the way Sonic looks, like a bad comedy sketch. Couldn't they make him look like what he did in Sonic Generations or Forces.

It pains me to say this, but this looks worse than the Ninja Turtles reboot and Transformer films combined.

I don't want to bandwagon, but that's bad. I don't even care about Sonic or his honor; it's just hilariously ugly and unsettling.

This could be so bad it's good. But corporate committee written movie adaptations often aren't. Cartoon characters usually meet a down on his luck divorced dad and ruin his career through their hijinks, then also are responsible for restoring his career and fixing his relationship with his kids. They do this through the exact same "zany scenarios" and fart jokes in every movie. It will always be live action. The CGI will always be disgusting to look at. It will always be insulting to the audience, the source material, and film in general. "The Smurfs 58: The Smurfy Smurfcation" will be a bad-bad movie. Something like "The Rap-City Street Kids Believe in Santa" is a good-bad movie.

Not gonna be hasty with my opinions just yet. It is not the worst thing ever I think

I'd like to see concept art, this couldn't have been the best design choice. there's better drawn sonic fanart and boy have I seen some.

He said "gotta go fast", that's either an obscure reference to the 4Kids dub of Sonic X... or this film is riding the M E M E train.

That's about 30% less horrible than I was expecting, I mean it's still pretty darn bad.

IMO, the biggest problem with Sonic's design for this movie is that he's just too far up the Feral<->Human scale. For a movie clearly aiming for a general audience, they completely missed the mark in making him look cool or cute.

As mediocre as they may have been, the Alvin & the Chipmunks movies had the right idea making the titular characters look like actual chipmunks rather than child-sized human hybrids for a live-action/CGI flick.

Robotnik it's actually pretty decent and in character.
Sonic is a human/hedgehog hybrid that taps into the speed force. Still getting used to that part... But all things considered it wasn't as bad as i was hoping it would be.

I'm not overly sold on Carey's Robotnik, whether the persona or the look. Yet, we got a glimpse of "true Eggman" at the end, which is fine with me (probably fused Sonic's quill with himself which caused him to get fat, loose his hair, and his mustache to bush out lol). The trailer wasn't as bad as I thought. It's silly, has action, has humor, and doesn't take itself so serious. Sonic's design is fine enough to me-- If I need him to look perfectly like his game self I'll just play his games (Sorry "uni-eye" lovers lol).

I don’t understand why movies these days give origin story’s to hair loss.. Professor Xavier, Lex Luther, and now Dr Eggman, all have hair before going bald in their movies. This isn’t a good plot device, it’s laziness.

Also, I doubt seriously those robots will have animals inside them to be freed.

The whole Dr Robotnik thing isn’t too bad, in fact I think Carey is a good choice
Now as an adult who games every day and that grew up with Sonic I think this Sonic looks terrible!
However if they are going for a younger audience well I just showed this my 10 year old daughter who says Sonic looks a bit weird but the film looks like it’s going to be good

Why does it seem like some cynical producers in Hollywood always make film adaptations of cartoons or games where the characters exist in the real world (in other words, live action)?

Is their own universe just too boring and limiting to work with?

Nobody expected LotR here, but...yeesh. I don't know if I'll ever get past the way Sonic looks. They might as well have gone all out and just CG'd the game version of Sonic into the movie.

My main complaint isn't so much how furry he looks but how tall he is. It just looks so...freakish with him having long, kind of muscular humanoid looking legs like that.

Thankfully my kids are teen+ and have no interest in seeing this. Maybe when it hits Netflix I'll give it a watch.

As someone who enjoys Jim Carrey as an actor and have enjoyed most of his films, I believe this will be one of his worst.

Its also clear, they're not picking the right bits of the 90s for this.

It would have made more sense, and been better commentary if they had Robotnik more as a Steve Jobs like "visionary" that sells robots to a public that knows full well he uses animals for them. And Sonic as fighting back, against Robtonik AND the US Government.

Dear God. This was one of the most atrocious things I've ever seen and yet I have a surprisingly strong desire to watch it. I think this movie will fit into the "so bad it's good" category.

@INKT I wouldn't call it laziness. I'd call it giving a 2D character a background story. I don't think there are that many people with absolutely no hair during their childhood/young adult life, so why not show how it happened?

@UmbreonsPapa The Gangsta's Paradise song inclusion is supposed to be a joke, as Robotnik is the complete opposite as he rolls up in the trailer. This movie is a comedy.

@BensonUii I completely agree! This is meant to be a kids/family movie and the fun part is seeing the reaction from adults in how disappointed they are. The movie looks enjoyable! I was a teen when the first Sonic game came out - even though the CGI design could have been more like the source material, I still give Sega props for investing in their IP for the new generation!

I might see this when it comes to Redbox, as I find films this terrible to be pretty genuinely fascinating. What I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall when people were brainstorming ideas and showcasing storyboards for this movie. I want to meet and talk with the sort of people who thought this would turn out well. Maybe buy them a drink. Particularly whoever designed Sonic for this film... I would absolutely love to crawl inside his brain and see how he thinks about things.

Anyway, with Detective Pikachu looking to end the curse of the video game movie, it's nice for something else starring an icon of the medium to release and remind us how badly things usually turn out.

I was talking about Dr Eggman. Jim Carrey has hair for almost the entire trailer. Sonic’s design is really bad though. It just looks awful. They could have done a more true to game design with Pixar style design and made it work a lot better. Sonics design is just hard to look at.

This looks like a good movie, the trailer made me laugh and I'm a fan of Jim Carrey. Honestly this looks pretty good to me, I don't care how they make sonic look since it's supposed to be live-action which is a whole new approach for Sonic the hedgehog.

@Magrane Well, the joke was lost on me. Or I guess there were probably better songs to get that point of across. Gangsta's Paradise isn't necessarily about being a gangsta, but more so a commentary on the lifestyle and its effects.

I also have no problem with the idea of a Sonic movie in general and it being a comedy. It's not it hasnt been an element of the franchise. I also get its a family movie and I wouldn't expect anything different. Doesn't mean you cant also keep long time fans in mind. Not necessarily be beholden to them. But at least keep them in consideration.

I guess ultimately, my point is if you're gonna take a swing like this, maybe make sure you try to do it well. You can make a family friendly comedy that while not taking itself too seriously, is also earnest and quality in its execution. I'm not completely writing it off though

If you ask me, it will probably turn out to be like the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie: so bad, it becomes good. At least, that's what I hope. Otherwise, it could just be so bad that it's terrible.

But for all we know, it could throw us a curveball and actually be good (or at the very least, halfway decent), and not so bad that it becomes good.

I predict an abomination of Super Mario Bros proportions. You know, that schlocky thing from the 90s which was borderline unwatchable and made zero sense from a story standpoint. That it's produced by the same people who are responsible for the Fast And Furious - never really bastions of high quality cinema - really seems to hammer that point home.

If it recoups it's budget I'll be genuinely surprised because goodwill nostalgia only goes so far.

I was reminded of a certain movie originally released in the calendar year 2007 named "Transformers" while watching this "trailer".

If SEGA had listened to the fans with common sense (aka longtime fans), none of this would ever happened.

I just....the more I see it the worse it gets. How do you take a company mascot and make it not look like the company mascot in a feature length film? It's not even merchandisable! It looks like an elementary student project. Or the worst Chinese knock-off Sonic lunch box one could find. How does a large corporation approve that? Would Disney approve a Mickey Mouse film with a twisted, deformed half-furry semi-real Micky with creepy Chucky doll features? Of course not! Would Frito Lay support commercials featuring a deformed, evil looking Chester Cheetah? No! Why would Sega allow their trademark IP to be abused so badly?? I actually think this movie is going to be really good. Sonic has nothing but the speed and rings gimmick so what else could they do with the character. Yeah the design is a little off but a handkerchief around his neck was off too. So as long as hes blue fast and rings it's a check check check.

The rings gimmick making it like portals seems cool and robotnik at the end of the trailer probably is a sign of things to come at the end half of the movie.

Jim carrey is perfect kinda reminds me of a less crude version of robotnik on Dorkly. Plus its Jim Carrey acting stupid so its good carrey.

Take a deep breath and relax, it could be worse like... resident evil or dungeons and dragons.

Im probably in the minority but i dont really see the appeal of Carrey in this trailer. It’s mainly a variation of the same performance he always does. I dont mind Carrey, but even setting aside my bias as a Somic fan, it still feels same-y with him.

Other thing is that his ‘contraptions’ dont look interesting at all. Would have made sense to have some of his ego expressed in their design or appearance. He had his own style(s) in the game. Unless the appearance at the end of the trailer indicates he Starts personalising things later,

I think it seems it's the cool thing to do online to bash this movie. Personally I didnt think it looked that bad. Look forward to bringing the kids to watch it!

@AlexOlney Not sure what the big deal is here. The movie doesn't look that bad. They'll be a lot of kids and some adults i'm sure that will check it out. The acting doesn't look horrible, and Jim Carrey is always a treat. What was everyone expecting?

@Eternalee I agree. What did everyone want? it looked pretty interesting. In fact, it's not like the game itself has propelled to new heights or anything . Jim Carrey is a funny guy and will probably do a great job..

I actually love it. it looks like an early 90's film and that is fantastic. Aside from his slightly flat face i think sonic looks fine and is how i had expected him to look. This will sit perfectly next to Mario bros on my shelf.

This is worse than I expected, and I thought it would be next year's Worst Picture.

I don't understand why the masses praise grotesque Detective Pikachu to high heaven while the also grotesque Sonic gets crucified. Both look atrocious. Detective Pikachu perhaps more so because a certain degree of excellence is expected from the Pokémon franchise, even at the worst of times. Sonic does not have the same expectation of excellence as Sega does not care for their brand image as much as an easy dollar.

Are people giving honest opinions on these or are they just mindlessly conforming to popular opinion, because both films look awful. In fact, I was surprised that the Sonic trailer wasn't worse, but I reiterate that I only expect mediocrity from the Sonic brand. Detective Pikachu makes me cringe so much that it makes me want to crawl out of my skin. I can't bear to watch any of the trailers anymore.

On both counts...
Tiresome Hollywood tropes? Check.
Grotesque CGI? Check.
Stunt casting? Check.
Use of overrated song in the trailer? Check.
"Epic"? Check.

What would have been really ambitious is a Pokémon film in the narrative style of the Studio Ghibli films (rather than movie-length episodes of the anime), but instead we get yet another dime a dozen one-time use popcorn flick.

I think the trailer is hilarious but now I'm thinking the entire movie won't be... It'll be semi serious and attempt to be good, with long boring plot pieces in between the shenanigans. Might still go see it, but am not sure. I want constant moments that can be memed haha

Well, I think it looks really good and I can't wait to see it. Sure, his arms and legs are too long, but I still think he looks really cute (especially when he says 'meow').

Eh, aside from the way Sonic looks, the trailer isn't bad. If it gets some at least decent reviews, I'll go see it.

@DarkScythe13 If Robotnik's contraptions got anymore interesting, they'd be forced to use a bunch of unnecesary CGI, which would get its own complaints. I think a more grounded look with more practical effects works better in a live action flick like his.

I can't help, for me it's the same interesting Twist as with Detective Pickachu. The First Time i thought with Detective Pickahu they could make an Pokemon Horror-Movie, because the Pokemon looked so weird and scary, and not fitting at all. However the more often i watch the trailers and such, the more i get used to it and i actually want to see Detective Pikachu and it might be a real good movie.

The same goes for Sonic. It's weird to see him like that and a horror-movie would worked as well, but after seeing the trailer 2-3 times i'm actually interested in this Movie.

/edit: However, and don't get me wrong i don't find the song particular bad, but to add Gangsta Paradise in Sonic-Movie is like one of the absolute worst decision they could've made. Doesn't fit at all...
