If you picked up a copy of Mortal Kombat 11 last week, or even if you've just been keeping an eye on the news, you probably know that it could definitely do with some tweaks here and there.
Developer NeatherRealm Studios recently revealed that it will be pushing updates to the game across all platforms, hoping to address the reward balancing issues raised by less-than-happy fans. While that particular update is still to come, the Switch version has now received a separate patch to address other, smaller elements of the game.
- Character and gameplay balancing
-Audio and localization updates
- Character tutorials are now available
- Overall stability improvements
- General fixes
On top of that, all players across all platforms will receive some extra in-game items to help you overcome the game's challenges.
We’re aware of the difficulty issues in Towers of Time, and while we’ve made some changes, rest assured there are more on the way. To help you along your way, everyone will receive:
- 500,000 Koins
- 500 Hearts
- 1,000 Soul Fragments
- 1,000 Time Krystals
As it turns out, the patch that is set to fix the reward balancing issues will be split into two further updates. Publisher, Warner Bros., has explained how it'll all work:
For the Nintendo Switch, we have two patches in progress. We’re aiming to have the first patch in this series released in the next day or two.
- Character tuning to reduce difficulty in Towers of Time
- Reduce AI health to reduce difficulty in Towers of Time
- Reduce effects and frequency of most difficult modifiers in Towers of Time
- Overall improvements to stabilityThe second patch is in progress and we’ll let you know as soon as we have a release date. This update will include:
- Reduce AI difficulty
- Increased Kurrency rewards in Towers of Time
- Thank you gift (as mentioned above)
Have you been having trouble with the game in its current state? Are you confident that these updates will address the issues? Let us know in the comments below.

Was waiting for the physical purely to save a bit of space on the memory card ... and it’s £10 cheaper for some odd reason
The recent patch actually did the reverse on Towers of Time. It was fun and a bit on the easy side, now it's frustrating even with konsumables.
That's going to be a long wander around the Krypt...
Its always the same with these games involving in-game currency and grinding. Release in a grindy state and when the backlash hits, attempt to reverse / amend it and expect an applause for “listening to the players”. How about this? Don’t attempt to see if you can try and get away with it in the first place?
I just bought to play the story mode, that and having a versus mode for tabletop MP
@FX102A But releasing a game like this fully broken is the whole point.
Now they can patch it to a less broken, yet still grindy and microtransaction-heavy state and players will find it "good" and "reasonable" cause it will be an improvement over the terrible initial state.
@popey1980
That was in reaction to the backlash.
I mean, I am not really into Mortal Kombat, but this kinda feels like a parent giving candy to a kid so they will be quiet...
Ah well. Not my problem.
I use the d pad hori gamepad. Best thing ever for Mk11
@Medic_alert The fact that the game is good or that it could do worse with microtransaction doesn't make it okay to have any kind of flawed design aimed to trick people into spend more money.
Anyway I admit my comment was more in general towards these kind of situations; I don't play MK, but nowaday I have zero trust left towards any title using any form of combination related to grinding and microtransactions.
We don't want free 500,000 coins. We want the option to earn them without going online. Give a free DLC character as a choice to make up instead cheap 500,000 coins. With that said....
Are they going to remove the political correctness, social justice and feminism too?
@Medic_alert
Some of the tower challenges were actually unbeatable. That is not defendable with who cares it's cosmetics. It's not a free to play game that makes it's profit on microtransactions, it's a full price game and some suckers even got a deluxe edition.
It would have just been kinda broken if only a grind but add the transactions and this is clearly trying to force people to pay for something that is said to be unlockable but is only available through cash.
I can't believe people are defending this crap.
@Alucard83 you can only get the unlockables online???
Why is it taking so long to patch this Switch version? Seems like the less loved version.
I'm gonna wait for black friday to pick this up. Probably be half off and have all the major game balance updates out by then.
Everybody saying this game is totally broken couldn’t be more wrong. If you want progress with unlockables it’s in the towers of time. The tower rewards rotate quickly and you can even summon towers for specific character rewards. Yes some of them are difficult but I’m glad it’s not a cake walk it’s Mortal Kombat after all. I wanted some gear for Noob last night so I summoned a tower for him, by the time I was finished a new tower spawned in the rotation for him (lucky me). By the time I was done I had 150k Koins and a crap ton of augments and cosmetics for the character I was hoping for. I don’t understand the complaints. The mtx in this game are bare minimum compared to others. Just play the game. And before somebody comes out with that nonsense it takes 6400 dollars to unlock everything or thousands of hours of game time to unlock everything blah blah, tell me, are you really going to use all that trash? Get outta here 😂.
@SetupDisk looks like somebody rage quit 😂
@Medic_alert
I've always enjoyed reading your comments here, but I never thought I'd see the day when you'd defend microtransactions. Locking content behind a paywall for a full-priced game is bogus, there's no good defense for it. Back in the day skins and all of this stuff you either have to pay for or spend forever unlocking were built into the game without a ridiculous grind. No one asked these developers to spend so much money making games, so the "financially viable" argument is invalid.
Creating expansions/characters/stages for a game after the full game was finished and asking for money is one thing, but putting crap in loot boxes and making you grind for random gear to manipulate people into paying for them is another.
This practice should NOT be defended. Oh well, I find Mortal Kombat to be extremely juvenile anyway.
Only one complaint, and that is the randomized Krypt chests. Not to mention even if you happen to open them all, you won't get every unlockable from what I read. That aspect kinda sucks, as I would've preferred it to be like previous Krypt experiences, plan, save up and spend on what I know I want as opposed to hoping what I unlock is what I want. Sad.
@Draxa
The excuse that you won't use all of the content is bogus, too. There are a lot of completionists out there, people who enjoy unlocking everything in the game they paid for. I guess they don't matter because to you companies are more important than consumers? You and medic should be hired as PR guys for NetherRealm.
@Medic_alert But the hundreds of hours you mention isn't based on content ,it's based around a ridiculous intentional grind to push you to spending money to bypass the grind. why is there 6 different currencies in the game? sounds like mobile game design more than ever. if these publishers continue to go down this road then I hope it fails. continually trying to fleece consumers shouldn't be in any way supported. Amiibos I've never bothered with so I'm with you on that one
@BadWaluigi2 If you think that's bad, you should see the PC version. They have yet to receive a single patch.
@Spudtendo ah so you’re a completionist. Well there are plenty other examples of games that take an astronomical amount of time to 100% but this time it’s not ok because you say so and it’s too hard. That’s fine. I get it. Doesn’t change the fact that none of them will actually utilize 90% of the available items in this game even after they unlock them. And to answer your question, no they don’t matter to me along with the other 99.9% of the human population including yourself. I think you’re just enjoying being on your online crusade against mtx which is fine, that bandwagon is breaking at the seams, but I do hope you enjoy yourself none the less.
Of course the game is going to be made extra hard to encourage you to spend money. That's the whole scam.
@JackAwesome which gamepad are you using?
They released an update 2 days ago, and the game is running really great! Haven't had any crashes, it loads up faster, some new content was added (more move list info, character tutorials), and other nice improvements. I am really really enjoying this game!
the only problem I have with the game is getting the rewards offline, because there is not always an internet around when you take it on the go.
I love mortal kombat, it's one of my favorite video game franchise and I most likely won't be getting it because there's no place for microtransactions in full priced games. they design the game keeping the mtxs the focal point, it's not something they've just put in there for the hell of it in the last moment. it's manipulative and not consumer friendly.
So now people who wanted to play MK11 as a digital dress up doll can stop complaining.
Everyone else who just wanted another Good fighting game on the GO - were never buying any of this stuff with real money anyway.
@SonOfVon
> they design the game keeping the mtxs the focal point, it's not something they've just put in there for the hell of it in the last moment. it's manipulative and not consumer friendly.
That's not true at all. That's the misconception that people keep repeating. If they wanted to manipulate people into buying stuff, the store wouldn't be time limited, all items would be available for purchase at any time. The store itself also wouldn't tell you where in the game you can find the exact same item. You CANNOT buy anything that helps you progress in the game, you can ONLY buy skins and cosmetics IF you don't want to, you know, play the game and get them yourself.
This whole issue has been blown completely out of proportion, and it really saddens me to think of how many people will miss out on an amazing game because so many sites and commenters are repeating misinformation about it, at the mere mention of "microtransactions" which are not even in the game in the sense that people are calling it.
@PlayedNSlayed
> ridiculous intentional grind to push you to spending money to bypass the grind.
What you call "grind" it's how the MK Krypt has been since Deadlly Alliance way back in the early 2000s. It's meant
to give you reasons to play the various modes and keep players engaged. Something that for example Arms could learn a thing or two from.
> why is there 6 different currencies in the game? sounds like mobile game design more than ever
There are different currencies awarded for different modes and doing different things. Again, as a way to entice players to play and try different modes. Only one of those is for sale, the most useless one, Time Krystals.
I expected this game to be full of microtransactions from the way people talk... instead I have 2000 time krystals and nothing to spend them on. That's the only currency you can get with money, although I earned all mine through gameplay. I have no idea what people are talking about.
The biggest issue I have with the Switch version of the game is that 80% of the darn thing is tied to being connected to the MK 11 servers. Wanna go for a browse through the nostalgia laced Krypt? Oh sorry - you gotta be online to do that. Want to customise a character? What? You're offline?! Oh.. sorry about that..
I get they are being strict about people exploiting currency, but it really kills the portable factor of the game when you can't do simple things without being online.
What's worse is since launch, I've only been able to connect to the MK 11 servers a handful of times. There doesn't seem to be a way to physically force the game to connect to the servers with a button - you just wait for things to magically happen in the background with nothing indicating you're connected or not until you attempt the aforementioned things I talked about above.
Oh and Frost is on the eShop for purchase despite the fact EVERYONE (preorder or not) will unlock her after beating chapter 4 of the story mode as Subzero. Now that's dangerously close to shady practices if you ask me.
Apart from that, the meat and bones gameplay - the actual fighting is excellent. This is coming from someone who intensely loved MK and walked away after MK 3.
@Draxa
Wow. I didn't rage quit as I didn't buy the game in part because of this crap.
Some people have amazingly low reading comprehension. At launch some of the tower challenges weren't "get gud" they were actually technically impossible to beat. If you for some unknown reason want to defend that fine.
Then again you point out to someone else that it's their problem that some of the challenges too hard. Even though at launch some of the challenges were unbeatable.
So choosing to remain ignorant is your life choice, good on you.
@Medic_alert @Medic_alert
So before the game was released WB clearly stated to everyone preordering the game that hey we hear you like to grind for things in game(which I actually enjoy) so we took the base idea from previous games added more things to grind for and since you love grinding so much we multiplied that 10x.
Everyone else we have the lovely option to pay cash for those things. Don't worry deluxe editon owners you get to pay the same as eveyone else.
As for players who really love their style we have hidden a hilarious feature! We nave actually made some of the challenges impossible to beat. Of course this will discourage players, make them feel like they can't play the game on the elite level. But you in the know will just buy those particular pieces and grind for everything else.
Crap, I feel so bad about missing that press release.
@mist 3 SJW's disliked your comment while pleading for tolerance. Then immediately upon not receiving instant gratification for their actions, fled to their safe spaces to hold each other and weep into a bowl of gluten-free, non-gmo Pine Nuts. And now just the mere explanation of their plight has spiraled them into a cavalcade of pleas to ban me from existance. Because clearly, somehow, jokes will be construed as hate speech. I bid you adieu.
@SetupDisk so how do you know they were unbeatable if you haven’t played it? Oh you read it somewhere on the internet I assume, or you spent some time at a friends house for a bit giving it a “try”. Yup you really know what you’re talking about, let me slow clap for ya. For a game that you obviously have no intention of purchasing as you have point out you really are following the specifics of its launch rather closely aren’t you? Coming from experience the towers aren’t unbeatable but some of them do require that you are skilled. Maybe that’s the difference between you and me, it seems that I’m the one who has spent actual time playing the game. But please continue with your assumptions and ignorance and such. I’ll be around for when you decide to try again.
@SetupDisk I was gonna sit here and type a long response to this comment you posted to medic as well. Then after reading it again cause you know my reading comprehension is a bit low in your opinion, I just accepted the fact that you really have no idea what you’re talking about and as such not worth the time. Bye now 👋
What the heck would I need kurrency for in a mortal kombat game?
The whole micro transactions issues has been blown way out of proportion. The PS4 update has tripled the amount of currency you earned and taken the TOT difficultly levels down. Still, if you just want to go online and battle people or story mode you, you won’t see it. This coming patch for Switch as PS 4 has it now, makes a lot of good changes. There was also an earlier patch that fixed a few of the gameplay and graphics issues (super minor)
As for the connection issues, you can force a reconnect by restarting the game. Easy on the Switch but annoying; I’ll give you that.
The game is good and doesn’t deserve the disrespect it’s been given. If you want to stay away from the game because the micro transactions; your choice. Stick to your guns, totally.
As for the supposed feminist agenda + backlash rolls eyes whatever It’s not worth it for anyone to pollute the internet with more negativity. I don’t agree with review bombing, but I don’t agree with the bans either. The game itself deserves neither and should be taken for what it is and it’s gameplay.
At the end of the day this changes address many of the issues that fans have had. If still don’t want try it for yourself after the update, well that’s personal choice.
@Tempestryke I'm guessing you're not an MK fan, huh? You use currency for unlockables. They're in the krypt, which they've done in each game since Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance 17 years ago.
@JJAwiiu I haven't played MK in years tbh. I didn't know that you had to pay for unlockables, in lieu of, you know, actually unlocking them by playing. Looks like I can keep my kash on this one.
Nice game obviously... But I have a strange "bug" when it comes to Johnny Cage's Ninja Mime skin... After the update couple of days ago, I was not able to select the skin (I have the premium edition). And when I could select it and I equiped it... It was lost the moment I played a match with Johnny using that Skin. Very odd. It seems like a bug like I had with Trials Rising on the PS4. An items bug were my items would multiply or were just missing, returning and missing again... This is why I really HATE these "must be online" games. My internet is perfect btw...
