Re: Nintendo Cooks Up New Food & Accommodation Trademarks For Pikmin, Smash Bros. And More

martynstuff

In before someone says something like 'Oh, are they going claim the trademark for a smash burger? Well, it already exists! Gee, Nintendo!'
Ok, but seriously let's have some fun with the menu items

  • Splatoona Melt
  • A Link to the Pasta (an Italian restaurant that serves Gnocchi-rina of Time, Majoras Mascarpone, Linguinis Awakening, Minish Campanelle, Triforce-illini and Ravio-li)
  • Metroid Prime Ribs

Also, a fast food place based on Gourmet Race. You pay a fee to run through an obstacle course and grab as much food as you can. If you don't beat your opponent or get less food than them, you don't get fed. Sorry

Re: Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown Dev Team Reportedly Disbanded By Ubisoft

martynstuff

I was going to say if this was a Nintendo game, I think Nintendo would have been happy with the sales but then I saw how it shipped/sold and well....it sold a tenth of what Metroid Dread sold (3 million!)* and that was available on one platform.

*And you know Nintendo looked at those sales and thought 'put MercurySteam on speed dial just in case'

Re: Pokémon Home 'Shiny Meloetta' Distribution Now Available

martynstuff

I like that they're doing this for all Switch games. I just wished I'd completed all the Sword and Shield dexes properly in Home. I already evolved the Type: Null and Kubfu in that game without registering them in Home. Anyway, here's my prediction for future events
Legends Arceus- Shiny Enamorus
BDSP- Shiny Darkrai or Shaymin
SwSh- Shiny Zarude
LGPE- Shiny Mew?

Re: Pokémon Home 'Shiny Meloetta' Distribution Now Available

martynstuff

@solarwolf07 You don't need the DLC to complete the dex in Home. You just need to obtain the Pokémon in those dexes in the game. You could do that by-

  • transferring a Pokemon from Home into SV and breeding it so the new hatched Pokémon is classified as being from SV
  • Finding a trade buddy to help you trade evolve certain Pokémon after doing the former
  • Find a buddy will to trade you some of the DLC exclusives (the paradox legendaries, Pecharunt etc) even if it's a temporary basis while you register them in Home before returning them. Also ask to have them holding a syrupy apple and metal alloy item to help obtaining those too. (Granted this involves playing nice with a friend)
  • Check out the Pokémon Portal menu and look out for online Tera Raid battles. Some people might be fighting a Pokémon you've yet to get that isn't in the base game (including some trade evos like Kingdra, Rhyperior etc)

Re: Talking Point: Just How Damaging Is This Big Pokémon Leak?

martynstuff

First things first in terms of the lore. I've seen the timeline of the origin of the Pokémon world. It's a decently thought out piece (I'm not spoiling it here because I'm not Centro).

  • In terms of the more adult stuff, I understand these stories are based on not only the bizarre Greek mythology but also on folklore tales of yokai but with the monsters being replaced with similar Pokémon counterparts. The keywords here being 'mythology' and 'folklore'. This would imply that these stories would fictional in the Pokémon world. None of the events actually happened but were told to forewarn the dangers of Pokemon (lest we forget PLA does expand on the theme of a time when humans and Pokemon didn't live together well). Anyway, my point is these events are non canon. They're dark and some lore can be dark but those stories were never going to canon for the sake of keeping the series. I have other thoughts but I'm not going to risk breaking site rules, cause arguments or go off topic.
  • As someone who likes learning about the 'What ifs' on games and series (long after launch obviously) I have liked finding out about stuff that could have been.
  • Not a fan of someone having access to details of future titles. Doesn't matter if they say they won't share details. Someone will leak that info somehow.
  • Not a huge fan of any potential doxxing that could happen. Big company, small company it doesn't matter.
  • I think this'll likely make TPC very wary of the fanbase. I doubt the hacking was done 'out of sheer passion for the series'

Said it on another sites comments but I hope the person or people stub their toe hard, fall down the stairs and involuntarily crap their pants on the way down.

Re: Yakuza Kiwami Dev Confirms Physical Switch Release, Limited Run Distributing

martynstuff

Can't say im a fan of LRG. It just strikes me as 'consumer friendo'-ism in it's purest sense where its push is to produce physical copies of previously digital games (nothing wrong with that) but it's such a limited run (pun intended) and something you have to wait significantly longer for to release with no specified release date. All that and taking in the import fees for places for Europe, it doesn't seem worth it in the end. That and I'm not a huge fan of their over bloated special editions.

On the flip side, I can understand why some companies like Sega or Konami would be reluctant about going physical on certain titles but I don't know. That and LRG are a smaller company than those big ones.

In the interest of balance, I'll likely get it digitally and I'm looking forward to the digital release of Ninja 5-0 from LRG so I'm a hypocrite ha

Re: Saudi Public Investment Fund Considering Increasing Its Stake In Nintendo

martynstuff

Just a heads up before anyone jumps to conclusions-

  • Nintendo's president has stated they have plans to tackle any hostile takeovers
  • Nintendo is a public company and anyone can buy shares so they can't prevent people from doing so
  • They can however object should any shareholders from outside of Japan owning more than 10% of a company by taking it to the government (or was it courts?) to put a stop to it.

In SNKs case, I would hazard a guess that they either accepted the buyout or no longer exist and render all employees as redundant. Again, I'm not Billy Business but that's my understanding

Re: Video: Here's A Look At The Latest LEGO Horizon Adventures Switch Trailer

martynstuff

I looked up this on the eShop. Its £59.99. That's put me off a bit but here's the kicker- the digital deluxe version (which does include the rollercoaster, the Sackboy and Ratchet and Clank custom items so fair play, they didn't have to do that) is £69.99 so after 7+ years of hearing 'i'm not paying $60 for that Switch game', i can safely say I don't want to pay PS5 game prices for a Switch game

I'll wait for a digital discount or look for a reasonable physical price.

Re: Final Fantasy Creator Jokes That He "Cheated On Nintendo" With PlayStation

martynstuff

@UNCLDNS Not strictly true. The main reason Nintendo broke off the deal with Sony was because there was a part of the contract where, had Nintendo had not read it through, that would have given Sony the rights/license to make games based on Nintendo IP without their agreement. Nintendo, not being keen on that, ended the deal there and then and paired up with Philips (who admittedly weren't great with the IP either)

Long story short and in a poor analogy, Nintendo did call off the wedding at the last minute to Sonys surprise but it turns out Nintendo learned Sony had said some stuff about Nintendo's daughter at the stag do. Neither side comes out well but it's for the best the partnership never happened

Re: Masahiro Sakurai's Excellent YouTube Series Is Coming To An End This Month

martynstuff

If theres one thing I've learned from his videos, it's that I and many others in gaming community underestimate the effort, details and production of how video games are made. My favourite videos were the Grab Bag ones where we got to see his game collection and an entire video about his cat.

I also enjoyed the one about award events and how ones which are voted by the gamers are different to ones voted by those industry. It goes on to explain how determinating what the best game is can be tricky because there's no definite answer. He goes on to conclude that 'your favourite game is the best game ever' or words to that effect. I also like another where he explains that patches take a while to do because they need to find a solution to the problem with breaking another part of the game by playtesting it before release. At least, ive learned why these things take a while.

NL commenter: But what about Pokémon scarlet and viol...

He also said that people shouldn't use his videos to take jabs at other developers or companies in the industry

Re: Nintendo's Xenoblade Chronicles Dev Monolith Soft Is Now 25 Years Old

martynstuff

My favourite little thing about Monolith Soft is that when Nintendo bought them, it was seen as a bad decision on thier part (there's a great neogaf thread with people's initial reactions being 'why?' and 'Bandai Namco should have paid Nintendo instead!') due to Monolith Soft for making too overly ambitious projects and delivering rushed or incomplete games (IIRC one of their games had the second disc of the game just be cutscenes).

It just goes to show that sometimes, just sometimes, that an acquisition of a game studio can be beneficial

Re: Miyamoto: Nintendo Won't Be Opening Museums In Other Locations

martynstuff

Makes sense. I mean if you went to to Japan in the hopes of seeing the Gulf War Game Boy only to be told that 'oh, that's at our Seattle branch. Sorry' then you're going to walk away disappointed whereas having it located in one location where all Nintendo history is makes the trip special

Obviously, I don't know if that game boy is actually there but it was that or those early Mario mascot costumes or those adult films to use as an example...

Re: Random: Horror Master John Carpenter Heaps Praise On Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown

martynstuff

I don't know about anyone else but I find it pretty neat when celebrities turn out to be keen gamers. It's just a nice feeling to know stuff like Elijah Wood once DM'd someone to ask if they could visit their Animal Crossing to get a few fruits he didn't have on his island or when the Norwich Streetpass group noticed John Hurt would appear in thier plaza. When they contacted him on Twitter, he just replied with a . Turns out he was partial to a bit of New Leaf. I know there's been a number of well known names who've talked about games they've played (Not just Animal Crossing, i swear)

@Solomon_Rambling
4. But what about (similar game)?
5. I don't care about (blank) but I do care about (blank)
6. We should coerce Game Freak to do better. It's not bullying, it's just manipulating people to do what I want
7. Yawn. I'm just having fun playing (similar title)
8. I'm looking down on both sides and I feel good about it. Everyone else is backwards
9. I don't have an opinion but here's 2-3 paragraphs anywa
10. I saw Miyamoto kick a dog in the face once so Nintendo is in the wrong. Remember that time Miyamoto kicked a dog in the face? It happened. Honest.

I'll stop now 😛

Re: Poll: What Is Your Favourite Game In The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection?

martynstuff

I'm enjoying this collection but I was quite surprised by The Punisher. It's short but is genuinely enjoyable ( granted I had to lower the difficulty because you know, it's an arcade game).

I also like the simpler inputs for moves. I don't usually use them but whenever I use Cyclops uppercut move, I usually accidentally do an optic sweep so the L+forward input is usual too. Also I finally figured how to pull off a charge input too so hurrah for me

Re: Devolver Digital Confirms The Plucky Squire Won't Run At 60 FPS On Switch

martynstuff

I guess if it's 30fps, the 3D sections will give off a stop-motionesque feel to it. That would give it a sense of playful wonder in theme with the game.

That said, I would LOVE it if there was a game where you fought a giant creature but it moves in a Ray Harryhausen like manner as a homage to that animation style. I've always wanted to see, say, Ridley like that

Re: Video: Marvel vs. Capcom: Fighting Collection Spotlights Two More Games

martynstuff

@CartoonDan Long story short is certain endings in Power Stone will be altered (likely to keep within rating boards standards. I think Rouge's ending features her, albeit implied, naked body. Last thing you want is an 18/M rating for a game that wasn't intended). Some of Demitris Midnight Bliss effects are changed (likely due to some licensing issues from what I understand). Think there's also some flashing effects removed too (optional)

To me, those differences don't bother me. It does appear to bother one YouTuber who seemed a bit salty neither collection is coming to Xbox

Re: Soapbox: The Next Pokémon Game Should Rework Old Critters, Not Just Add Dozens More

martynstuff

You see, i quite liked cross-gen evolutions. It gave old favourites a new twist. I'm glad they brought it back in SV (and gen VIII). Granted the last time it was fully implemented in Gen IV the results were a mixed among people (Magmortar was kinda ugly) but I do enjoy seeing them and using them

Regional variants are another smart idea. It allows some old Pokémon a new lease of life, makes some sense that some Pokémon are different depending on the environment and more importantly to me, holds back on the expy designs you'll sometimes get. Why give Paldea a new black bull Pokémon when Tauros exists and refit for the areas culture. It's the same with Mr Mime in Galar. The original is based on miming so surely it's a good basis for other performance art like tap dancing or physical comedy.

I'm also a fan of mega evolution but I can understand why that wouldn't be revisited again (Z-A withstanding). Apparently, it was a bit unbalanced in competitive so if it was an ongoing feature with more Megas, the whole thing would have to be drastically rebalanced each and every time. That might explain why XY got the Legends treatment. Z-A will likely be single player focused title like Arceus so they don't have to worry too much about balance or the competitive scene but also throw the fanbase a bone with a much liked feature. Unfortunately, this also means besides Gen 6 remakes, enjoy Z-As Megas because we won't be seeing them again.

Also, lukewarm take but I liked the baby Pokémon. We got one in Gen 8 and I thought it was a shame Cetoddle and Capsukid weren't considered baby forms especially from the naming structures
