X is a very pure, nearly perfect game. Everything it does is executed flawlessly and polished to near perfection. I even think it still looks good. It's low poly graphics and bright colors running at a smooth 60 fps give it a distinct look that holds up much better than anything else from that era.
GX has a bunch of superfluous crap that adds nothing to the game. The story mode has a lot of variety but just isn't fun, the character profiles are boring, the cutscenes are awful, and F-Zero TV has to be the most asinine thing I've ever witnessed in a game.
BUT!!! GX is still better. Despite all the unnecessary stuff, GX has the edge where it matters. Tight controls, fantastic tracks, and an unparalleled sense of speed. GX will beat you down and spit in your face, but it is never unfair. You have all the tools you need to win, and when you do, it is the most satisfying feeling gaming has to offer. X is a great game. GX is my favorite game of all time.
@rdrunner1178 Totally. Nintendo should in general make a Kindom Hearts type crossover of their own franchises, and officially establish Starfox, Metroid, and F-Zero as one universe.
@AG_Awesome The Dark Alliance games on PS2 play more like Diablo. These are closer to Dragon Age or Pillars of Eternity if you've played either of those. More like an RTS where you don't have direct control over your character. You give commands to a party and the characters carry them out.
@Realnoize Yeah, there really isn't a great sim, or even slightly realistic arcade racer. A new Excite Truck/Bots/Bike would round out the system well, but that doesn't seem to be in the works either. Grid Autosport is coming, but that may not be the best without analogue triggers. Maybe they will add GC controller support.
I never got around to this one, mostly because it came out at the same time as Beyond Good and Evil and Sands of Time, both of which reviewed better. Still, always meant to play it eventually. Now might be the time.
I like this list. I would put a lot of them in a different order, but your reasoning is sound. With one exception: the Wii U is placed too high. Yes it had a good first party lineup, but that is true of all Nintendo consoles and it had a lot of shortcomings that the others did not. Other than that, good list.
Cool. I still can't believe how well this game turned out on Switch. Will be playing mostly Smash for a while, but I do intend to put more time into Warframe (and a little money) in the near future.
@Retupmocnin I completely agree about a Smash RPG. Ultimate has left them with little room to improve, so might as well do something completely different. A Kingdom Hearts for the Nintendo Universe. This would print money.
@goggles789 Okay, you got me. I've never met the guy, but when he talks he comes off as pretentious and self aggrandizing. But its possible he's a nice guy who chooses his words poorly.
This is my most played game on Switch, but I get why a lot of people aren't into it. Small roster and no story mode doesn't cut it these days. Still, new IP light on content managed to move 2 million coppies. I'd call that a success and suspect there will be a sequel in a few years.
@Captain_Toad Sphynx was one of those games I always wanted to play but never got around to. Will check it out this time. I remeber this and Beyond Good and Evil came out around the same time, and they were both marketed as Zelda-like games. Prince of Persia SoT was there too. Victim of a crowded holiday release lineup.
@NovaCam I have to agree that Mach Rider is unlikely, but I really hope it's real. I've been dreaming about Nintendo hiring Platinum to make a new Mach Rider for years now. It would basically be Vanquish, but with a motorcycle.
@GrailUK The fact Katamari didn't come out on the Gamecube never made sense to me. I know the system didn't have a big user base, but it was the kind of fun and goofy game that tended to do well. Much like Super Monkey Ball, the second best video game of all time
@Krull On a similar note, I'd like to see Monolith make a Kingdom Hearts type game in the Nintendo universe. Call it Smash Bros: Quest or Saga or something.
@mj2k18 There sure have been a lot of 9s, but in NL's defense, a lot of well received and successful indi-games of the past few years are coming out all at once on Switch (this one has an 87% on Metacritic). Probably due to Switch being relatively new and unexpectedly successful.
I like JRPGs, but rarely manage to finish them. But these games held my interest to the end. The biggest problem is they have fantastic battle systems that are hard to describe. You really have to play them for yourself to get it.
I was hoping Cross Tag Battle would sell enough for this to happen. Here's to hoping SNK Heroines moves enough units to get us the new Samurai Shodown.
Remember when you had to just live without 2D fighters on Nintendo consoles?
@masterLEON @JoakimZ : Sorry everyone. I was mixing up the Anniversary Collection game list with the Neo Geo Mini. But I stand by my claim most of these have better sequels that will be on sale soon.
@SpaceboyScreams This is exactly what I would like to see too. Have the next game or two build off BotW. No need for each game to be a huge jump up in scope from the last.
@adam9431 Honestly, I'd skip this sale. Most of these games have better sequels that will probably go on sale before too long. All of them will be on the SNK 40th anniversary collection, and all were on the SNK Arcade Classics for Wii. There are more cost effective ways to get these particular games.
I'm sure there is stuff going on under the hood that I don't understand, but trailers for VI don't make it look much better than IV or V. Decrease the resolution, scale back some lighting and normal mapping effects, and make some of the 3D stuff in the distance into a skybox. I'd still buy it.
@NinjaWaddleDee Grandia 2 is great (I never played the first). There are a lot of JRPG tropes, but the battle system is unique and a lot of fun. It's sort of real time, but action pauses for your characters turn, then once you choose your action, things start playing out in real time again. It leads to some tense moments where you might see an enemy about to hit you with a big attack, and you are praying you're turn comes up in time to block or counter. It adds tension to the battles that is often lacking from a normal turn based game, but allows for more strategy than you generally see in a real time one.
Cool. I didn't play the first but I'm glad it did well enough to warrant a sequel. Games like this are rare on Nintendo consoles. Although between this and Moto GP, maybe that will change.

Whatever, just give us a real DOA game already. 6, 5 Ultimate Last Final Punch Fist Edition, or Dimensions 2.
Re: Nearly Half Of All Switch Owners Have A Copy Of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
@Realnoize FAST RMX? I know it's a niche genre, but that is a polished and well made racer.
