Ninja Theory may be owned by Microsoft these days, but the platform holder's somewhat agnostic approach to publishing means that Switch owners will get to sample the award-winning Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, the last game that Ninja Theory created before it was snapped up by Xbox Game Studios.
Inspired by Norse mythology, Hellblade places you in the sandals of Senua, a warrior who is struggling with psychosis as she tries to liberate the soul of her dead lover. Senua's mental breakdown manifests itself in strange ways, and the developers worked with mental health specialists to ensure the experience is as authentic as possible.
Given that Hellblade was something of a graphical showcase on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One, it will be interesting to see how it scales on the weaker Switch hardware, but it's brilliant to see this critically-acclaimed title come to Nintendo's platform. No solid release date has been given beyond 'Spring'.

Now this got me very excited!!! It is a beautiful looking game. I will be picking this up as soon as I can.
the level of polish on this game is begging for a physical release
Nice, yet another game people would've doubted that could be on Switch, yet here we are.
Be warned people who are gonna but this: this is not a fun game. It's really serious and depressing in terms of its mood, still a game I recommend though
From the Ninja Theory twitter: "it'll be digital only for the Switch."
So is this like Minecraft situation? Well either way, it is pretty cool to have on Switch.
Not sure if that direct was terrible or not but it sure wasn’t great
This is interesting considering Microsoft already own them, I wonder how many of their other studios will end up releasing ganes elsewhere
@Malcrash given the right mood though that kind of gameplay still has its merit. I can’t wait for this one.
Great game!!! This was a gem on PC.
@ToneDeath that’s a shame. I’ll probably still pick it up
I've never played this.. is it any good? Also is there any chance the footage above could be the switch version and not PS4? 😋
@Hoho There really is no pleasing some people.
A absolutely brilliant game Switch only users need to play it if you haven't.
Is MS publishing this game?
I almost got this for PS4, glad I held off. Will be great on the go.
Sounds like another game with mental health themes that you really shouldn’t play if you have mental health problems IRL.
there was a lot of low resolution footage mixed with higher quality footage. i wonder what this one will look like? hopefully it's worth playing on the switch and not merely a ported curiosity. i will wait for reviews and get it if it's good.
This is a graphicly impressive game and it's running on Switch... Hmmm
@FragRed I’m actually in good spirits, despite having to wait till June for something worth playing. Double AA JRPGs, and late ports(readily available for cheaper prices to near all on this board) are the essence of mediocrity. Some people have standards that go above mediocrity.
Hmm I purchased a physical copy of this game for the ps4 right before Christmas and played mabey an hour of it before going back to rdr2. If a physical copy is released for Switch then I'll double dip and play it on there lol.
@Hoho Super Mario Maker 2, new Zelda, release dates for many games, some big AAA ports.
"Not great"
I disagree. It was nearly perfect.
@Hoho
Shut up
@Hoho I think your standards are simply too picky, nothing to do with going above "mediocrity".
We got a completely new Super Mario Maker, a completely new IP (Astral Chain), a new Zelda game, a game like Hellblade, which we never even expected to see on the Switch, Dragon Quest XI also looked pretty damn good, and then there was even more, such as downloadable demos for Yoshi's Crafted World and Daemon X Machina.
Only a couple of duds, far as I'm concerned: Fairun, that weird Disney game, Box Boy and Rune Factory also isn't really my thing, but you know? For some other people, they actually might be interesting, so it's all a matter of taste.
But regardless, even looking at it objectively, it was a really solid Direct. There's just no debating that, unless you simply wanted to express your opinion, which is fine, but is by no means a fact.
@sanderev super Mario maker 2 is cool, and not a port, fire Emblem looks interesting (comparatively). Arch chain(?) looks like they put effort into it. Tetris Royale also cool. I had every single emotional reaction to link’s awakening, glad, mad, sad....plad? Jury’s out on that one. Otherwise a lot of late arrivals and Japanese double AA games. I’m less disappointed than I imagined, but ehhh
@SBandy ohhh Sweety, there there
@Hoho True some of them are late ports, but I played almost none of them on the original system. And that Zelda reveal, I also had almost all emotions (however only positive ones) It's one of the first Zelda games I ever played. And I always thought they would remake it "Return of Samus"-style for the 3DS. But seeing it coming exclusively to the Switch, yeah. DAY ONE for me.
And also, if it would've ended directly after the SMM 2 reveal I would've been happy as well. Everything else was a bonus to me I still have my Wii U connected to my TV for one game only: Super Mario Maker.
And I'm going to make a new SMM level each week until the new one releases in June.
But how will the Switch be able to handle this game? It will melt under this type of distress.
@ThanosReXXX I won’t quibble about it being “solid”. All the same however, many of these titles shown are niche and eastern, that new platinum won’t break 2 million(Octopath didn’t), fire Emblem is likely the only Japanese style game that will achieve greater success internationally. As for all those ports, I’d hazard that 95% of the people talking on this here website have the means to play them(at a heavy discount) as for the rest of the switch audience: same vibe.
That new Zelda...I’ll watch the trailer again but oh boy, wow!!!
@Hoho oh boy welcome! These comments sections have been troll free for a while and they were getting quite boring.. Bonsoir
@sanderev if u didn’t play them originally, then perhaps they lack the power of resonance.
Link’s awakening is an amazing game and the pure essence of Zelda(didn’t touch it till I was 21 mind you) but man that art style looks like [removed], but also it looks cute and fascinating , I can almost guarantee that DX will remain the definitive.
I’ll watch the trailer again, and withhold my full judgement
@Balta666 I think I’m being quite reasonable. Either your patronizing me in the manner of a mother or your acknowledging that genuine disagreement is good sport.
Each Direct seems to have a third party surprise, one nobody saw coming. Doom, Little Nightmares, Civ VI, now this. Certainly an interesting prospect. Haven’t bothered with it on PS4 or XBox but might take a look at it on Switch if it runs well.
OMG YES! I love this game, can’t wait!!
No way so now Sony will Pout about Switch...
@Hoho
i thought it was a great Direct. Something for everyone. New game announcements and updates for previously announced titles. i am sure they are holding a lot back for E3. I will agree with you on one thing; that art style for LoZ:LA is not very flattering. I wish they used the hand drawn look of the opening cinematic.
Would rather Devil May Cry and Nier.
This game is universally praised by practically everyone. Won numerous awards. Looks as good as any full AAA title... (and for only $29.99)
I didn’t buy it on other systems but... a Switch version? Now you have my interest.
@WhiteTrashGuy I’ll probably buy the game but oh boy it’s a baby game
Awesome. I did not expect to see this on Switch.
@Hoho Fair enough in some respects, but who honestly cares if something is niche and is potentially not going to do good in the West? What ultimately matters to most of us (and what SHOULD matter), is if we personally like any of these games. If so, then all we need to do is buy them.
Of course, that could still result in only a small group of people buying them, or, because the Switch is a rather big success right now, the games actually WILL sell several millions, as long as we support them, meaning more games will follow from the same companies.
Personally, I've been triggered by most of these games, except for a small handful I previously mentioned, and I am hardly a niche gamer, nor am I specifically interested in such titles, so if these games speak to me, then I'm pretty sure that they will also interest a whole lot of others like me.
This game looks hella cool. It also looks like it will be a good showcase for what a Switch can do - if they get it right. I’m definitely interested in this and can’t wait to see more.
Looks good. Decent direct all round. Not “mind blown” but I have fanhype expectations. Still, three or four games here I can’t wait to play, so I’m happy.
Happier still with an e3 ac or Pikmin announcement
Sorry to double post but....wicked trailer !
@ThanosReXXX by “niche” I’m referring to the limited budget, rather than determining a games value by its popularity.
I think link’s awakening(top 3 game ever) might also look “cheap”
@Hoho No offense, but I don't get that, and kind of a strange way to use the word niche. I only interpret it as "being of interest to a select minority", and as such, it also makes sense.
I don't think that the Platinum game, or the Square Enix one are small budget games, and neither are the Dragon Quest games or Marvel's Ultimate Alliance, so what's left then, is the indies that were among the games shown, and perhaps Rune Factory, as a middling budget game.
But regardless, my sentiments remain the same. I and others ARE interested in them, and if others aren't, then fair enough, but it doesn't stop us from buying and/or playing them.
@ThanosReXXX if a game is niche, then it’s budget is adjusted accordingly. RPG factory or whatever they’re called (Square Enix owned) makes niche games, hence cheaply made, one of if not platinums best selling developed games, Nier automata was also made on a budget. I’ll assume the rest of their games are probably as well.
But this is all semantics.
My point is my middling opinion of this direct isn’t just my opinion. Otherwise the international audience would buy JRPGs and other eastern games. A few examples aside (Final Fantasy, Dragon quest in japan, monster Hunter world) they don’t
@Hoho If all you see is mediocrity, it's because you are a mediocre person.
@MoistEmphasis3 deep, u should be a philosopher
@Charlie_Girl Why a physical release? A micro SD card runs faster than the cartridges, and you pick up a 400gb card for $40/$50 on Amazon.
@Hoho Don't need to be a philosopher to see right through you.
This has been on my Steam wishlist for quite some time now. I'm glad I endured dozens of sales and will be experiencing this game for the first time on the Switch.
@MoistEmphasis3 no I mean it, if u work hard at it, u can be a professor or a dean of middle school philosophy, or a video game writer.
Very shocked this game is coming to Switch! I mean... the graphics are AMAZE BALLS on the PS4 Pro and I've heard the XBOX ONE X. I've played through it twice. If it looks great on the Switch... why not again🤔
Great game. And I’m surprised to see it on Switch, because it’s a graphical powerhouse on PS4. Cool!
@Charlie_Girl I’m hoping for a physical release as well. I loved this game on PC and I will play it again on Switch.
@Hoho Western AAA games do not have an unlimited budget, quite the opposite really, companies do not give developers blank checks.
This is one of the biggest surprises of the direct. Happy to see it on the Switch even though I personally didn’t care for it. The combat gets repetitive and the environmental puzzles are more annoying than fun.
Though the ending was emotional and almost made it worth it.
@Mrtoad true, all games are done on a budget, even so, there are certain games “done on a budget.”
Consider the phrase “we’re on a budget”; the explicit notion is that you need to be careful with your money, but there also exists within the statement, an implicit that there is no money.
Apply example to my comment above and there should be no confusion.
I’m not a huge RPG guy, but I’m not into country music either and can appreciate a good song when I hear it. That Direct was excellent.
@Hoho That's not always true. Simple example: a new IP doesn't have any traction with any audience yet. It could become wildly popular if it hits the spot with the general audience, but it could also become popular within the confines of a smaller group of people.
And not all jRPG's are the same. I have a strong suspicion that you're at least in part projecting your own opinion on the situation, and not looking at the bigger picture.
Of course, RPG's in general are already for a specific audience, but the simple fact that they're still here after all these years, and are also still massively popular, should tell you something.
P.S.
I'm not exactly sure if that is what you're implying, but I never said that your opinion was a middling one.
@Hoho Please mind your language!
@ThanosReXXX I have a fairly good recollection of how well the average RPG sells. They sell enough to keep the developers and publishers in business, that’s about it.
Rune factory 4, 0.7 million, Octopath 1.08 (I believe), Bravely default 1.14, bravely second, half that. Etrian odyssey 1.5 million (as of 2016) combined sales of series. Xenoblade 2, 1.5 million give or take, Odin sphere, and I am setsuna, couldn’t find sales figures so.....yeah. Fire Emblem awakening, 2-2.5 million, fates is in that ball park too. Shin Megami Tensei series in all its many iterations: around 8 million. Persona 5: 2.2 million. This is all a rough estimate mind you. Point is prospering and lingering are not the same. You can dispute the metrics of success if want but those are the numbers as I could find them.
If I wanted to be churlish, I might suggest that the fan base Venn diagram for these series is very tight. Also I’ll confirm your suspicion. I do in fact utterly hate JRPG style games; Earthbound, Fire Emblem and Xenoblade X notwithstanding. Do the same boring UI laden battle thing 10,000 times and every now and then the hoky story progresses maybe the scenery changes, or perhaps a number gets bigger. Haven’t played them all, don’t want to.
I didn’t hate this direct, unlike every 2018 presentation; thus I assumed every other vocal Nintendo fan would think its the most amazing thing ever.
The direct was a flood of Double A efforts, book ended by two actual Nintendo 1st party announcements.
Moreover unless you can tolerate Yoshi’s plodding movement and baby easy difficulty(I am awful at video games by the way). You have to wait till summer for the new offerings, though 2019 looks altogether good thus far.
If you’re one the 2-3 million(my meagre estimate) folks that like Eastern style games, the direct was amazing. if you’re everyone else that like Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games or like western style games. You get old or inferior yet portable versions of games, Mario maker, Yoshi and Zelda.
Moving beyond the direct, my main gripe with Nintendo is that though handheld and console development has consolidated under the switch, I’ve yet to see it have an impact on their productivity. There are so many teams and studios that are seemingly doing nothing. Their overall output should be far better.
You can have the last word if you desire friend, though I’d prefer if your tell me I’m outright wrong rather than remind that I exist in the confines of my own opinion.
P.S to your P.S
I’ve had no qualms with your conduct and was implying nothing.
God bless
@Octane what language? Or is it the contents therein?
@Hoho Profanity.
@Octane is [removed] too colourful a word for a Nintendo site, anything else I’ve said is perfectly reasonable.
@Hoho Like I said, profanity isn't allowed, so please mind your language.
@Octane it’s like Christian school all over again
@Hoho I'm not out to prove you wrong, just trying to make some sense of the discussion, and point out where your logic, which I keep suspecting is at least to some extent influenced by your personal view on things, is partially flawed.
For example, you name several jRPG's, but you seem to forget a little thing called Final Fantasy, a truly MASSIVE IP, which although it's quite popular over here, is still very much an Asian-made product. And games like Devil May Cry, and all it's offspring, such as Bayonetta and the like also keep growing in popularity, even if the initial installments and sales were only average.
This site's community alone is of course not a really good representation of the world out there, and since it is a Nintendo-related site, it isn't all that strange that you can expect to find Nintendo enthusiasts here, so therefore quite obviously also all the positivity concerning the Direct.
As for Nintendo's output: none of us can say anything logical or tangible about that, so using words like "they should be" is irrelevant, because we couldn't possibly know what's going on inside those walls. And they also didn't say that these are ALL the games that are going to come out in 2019, and the year has only just begun.
Even right after the Direct, several articles have already popped up mentioning titles coming to the Switch, that were not mentioned in the Direct, so I think we should reserve the doom and gloom for when it might actually be necessary and/or applicable. But honestly, in the case of the Switch, I don't think that is ever going to happen, because it is a huge success, and will only become bigger in the near future.
In closing, I want to say that there's nothing wrong with your opinion: all of us are allowed to have one, but all of us also need to understand that a company like Nintendo isn't just catering to us personally, so there's bound to be periods where there are good games for you to play, and periods where there aren't. That's almost inevitable, unless you've got other consoles to keep you busy in the mean time.
And I hope we can agree that some of the other people that are disappointed, are only the victim of their own false and stupid beliefs in unconfirmed rumors, about games potentially being shown, and just because these specific games weren't shown, the entire Direct is deemed worthless.
It's all so petty and short-sighted...
Agony done right? The game looked pretty interesting the first time I saw it, but wasn't it a bit souls-like? I might buy it if its a good port and the whole game is on the card. I just hope it isn't to hard for me!
