Look everyone, I know this seems obvious to a lot of us here, but the research needs to be done. You can't just take a bunch of oppinions and presume it to be fact. Many facets of the gaming experience need to be broken down, and controlled experiments need to be performed on each one to see the effect on the human mind. That research can then be used as the basis for psychologists and medical professionals to build on. This is just how science works.
Lets all take a moment to thank Oxford for setting this in motion, instead of dumping on them for "stating the obvious".
@hoopderscotch Right? I wasn't expecting Daemon X Machina to do well, but this is pretty sad. It came at a busy time but also didn't score great, and I think people forget that mech games almost never review that well. DXM metascore is about on par with most Armored Core games.
@BlackenedHalo I wondered why IWD 2 was being left out, lost source code explains it. Too bad as I agree it's better than the first.
Anyway, I'm usually one to say gameplay is more important than story and graphics, but Planescape is one of my few exceptions to this rule. Has the worst gameplay of all the Infinity Engine games, but the story is so engrosing that it is by far my favorie of the bunch. Played through Planescape multiple times, but never actually finished a BG or ID.
I know it's unlikely, but I'm holding out vain hope for a split screen update. Come on Nintendo, you were the last big publisher consistently offering this.
@SKTTR 3 is a good place to start. Or 5. 4 is a good game, but the last half has you go back through the same levels in reverse order. They must have run out of money mid-development or something. DMC is also pretty good, but gets a lot of hate for being different.
Or just play Bayonetta, because it's better than all of them.
@BarefootBowser Look up youtube videos about "dodge offset". Focus on practicing that one mechanic for a bit as it opens up a lot of gameplay avenues. Also, you may want to just start with Bayonetta 2 because it is easier to get into. It will spoil some things, but the story is nonsense anyway. Really no big loss.
It's a pretty good strategy. I admit to buying a number of games because they were dirt cheap and sounded somewhat interesting. One Strike, The Way, and Superhero Fight Club to name a few.
That's really cool that a kids show managed to go this long without having the main character win the big event. Usually they can only make 2 or 3 seasons for something like this.
F-Zero actually holds up quite a bit better than most racing games form the 16 bit era. But if you have access to X or GX, you should just play X or GX.
The next Smash Bros should have a story mode that plays like an action RPG. Basically Kingdom Hearts in the Nintendo universe. Still have a scaled back multiplayer mode with about 20-30 characters. Change focus without abandoning the series roots. I think people would accept this. Part of the series appeal is fan-service, and this would allow plenty of that just in a different way.
@rjejr I have to agree. This and Astral Chain are different genres, sure, but they are both anime action games. A lot of people are going to make a chioce, and Astral Chain got the better reviews. I personally plan to get both eventually, but Astral Chain is definitely the priority.
@HumanDog The new Samurai Showdown is coming in December, and King of Fighters XIV and XV sometime next year. So SNK is on board at this point. Most of Arc's games are already out or on their way. Plus Nintendo now has three fighting franchises with ARMS, Pokken, and Smash. Casual yes, but still fun games.
There are some big absences (come on Namco), but I'd say the Switch lineup is the most robust we've seen on a Nintendo console since the SNES.
Have to admit, I didn't know who Terry was before playing Capcom vs SNK on Dreamcast. It was my first step into a much larger world. Hopefully his inclusion in Smash has the same effect on many others.
Also, if you don't know who Terry is, get these games on e-shop:
Real Bout Fatal Fury Special
Gauro: Mark of the Wolves
And get these on GOG.com:
King of Fighters 13
King of Fighters 2002 Unlimited Match
Grandia 2 was the first jrpg I ever finished. Was thinking of getting this to finally play the first game, but maybe I'll wait for a patch. Or just buy the og version on PSN.
I think releasing this so close to Astral Chain is going to hurt sales. Yes, they are different genres, but the casuals will see two anime action games and probably pick one instead of both.
@aqryllic People often accuse Nintendo of never making any new IPs, and it's really not true. They do publish a fair amount, the problem is they get tiny marketing budgets.
@Aneira Ha! Fair enough. LoK was so good. Especially Soul Reaver. Like a dark fantasy Metroid with better storytelling than Metal Gear. Really didn't deserve to fade out like it did.
I miss the extreme sports craze of gen 6. It got so huge, they actually made a game about wakeboarding. And it was GOOD! Think about this, the genre was so popular, they gave a team a big enough budget to produce a good wakeboarding game.
@nintendolie Tatsunoko vs Capcom was basically the Wii's Marvel vs Capcom 3. Gameplay is very similar. It's the only reason I even know about Gatchaman to be honest.
Bigben has a history of making games that range from fine to adequate, but the concept appeals to me enough that I will check this out when it's cheap if the port is good.
Missed out back on the SNES, but Act Raiser was the first thing I bought on the Virtual Console. It's definitely a "greater than the sum of it's parts" situation. The action sidescroller and strategy sections are both kind of simplistic on their own, but put together make for a unique and memorable experience. If this fleshes out both aspects, it could be excellent.
@Tethutendo Me too. Stuff like this, ARMS, Battery Jam, and even Rocket League to an extent, have been bringing back those feels that made the Dreamcast great.
ARMS was a new ip that was light on content, sold at full price. And it still moved 2 million copies. I think we'll see an ARM2 at some point. I hope so anyway.
ARMS is my favorite game on Switch and one of the only games I got into playing online. I totally get why people say it didn't have enough content for a full priced game, but I've put 60 hours into this thing so far. For me, I got my moneys worth. Hopefully more people give this a shot when it becomes a Nintendo Select or something.
There was once a time when it was hard to be a fighting game enthusiast with a Nintendo console. Despite a few notable absences (Soul Calibur please) that just isn't the case anymore.
Not sure if I personally would want to replay these on console, but the fact this is happening at all makes me happy anyway.
And just in case anyone is on the fence about them, or just not sure where to start, Planescape has the best story of any video game ever created and the most forgiving game play of the bunch. So start there.
I know everyone dumps on the idea of a new mobile game, but the first one they made for the app store is the 3rd best game in the series (and the best one not made by Amusement Vision).
@shoeses I think this list is only 1st party games. Doesn't say that here, but they said it the last few times Nintendo released these numbers. Pretty sure Octopath at least sold 2 million, and that was a while ago. @Pod Yeah, I'm a little miffed ARMS is not on the top ten anymore too.
@RadioHedgeFund Ha! Glad to hear I'm not the only one who prefers Avalanche to the original. And yeah, while I do think SSX 3 is ultimately the better game, the two have a different focus. Fans of the genre would be wise to own both.
@RadioHedgeFund Agreed. I sometimes feel like the only person on earth who liked SSX 2012. Sure, it's not as good as SSX 3, but nothing else is or ever will be.
I also like Avalanche more than the original 1080, so maybe my opinions should just be ignored.
This game is fine. Even back in the day it was just kind of fine. There's fun to be had with friends, but there is no reason to play this if you have access to any entry in the Twisted Metal series. (Okay, it might be better than Twisted Metal 3, but not by much)
