The free-to-play third-person shooter Warframe has already reached the one million player mark on Nintendo Switch in less than a month. Digital Extremes - the Canadian publisher behind the title - celebrated this epic milestone by sharing the following tweet:
If you haven't tried out Warframe yet, it's a game that's been ported across to the Switch with the help of the specialist team at Panic Button. The title was originally released on PC in 2013 and has steadily improved over time.
Games Industry notes how the sci-fi experience saw its best concurrent user peak on Steam last month, with 132,000 Tenno logged in at once. Prior to the Switch release, the game had 38 million registered players across all platforms. Considering 22.86 million Switch have now been sold worldwide as of September this year, there's still a sizeable audience to attract.

Not bad at all !
I give it 8 comments before someone says they hate Fortnite.
I hate Fortnite. I win.
I am really impressed with Warframe.
Being free will do that, I suppose.
@BenAV As will being a decent game that doesn’t scalp players
Is it free to play
tbh, the start is too boring, no challenge and I don't want to grind untill it actually gets fun. I rather play a game that is actually fun from beginning to end.
@slider271 Sure, that's good. But people will still download complete garbage if it's free and has been promoted enough.
@Yorumi I'm just waiting till the Fortuna expansion comes along to play it on Switch.
I've yet to download this. Surprising since its free and all I'd usually jump on it. But I'm trying to pick and choose my big downloads. Ill get to it sooner or later
Is there a decent solo player campaign, or is it all about multiplayer online?
Just started playing on Switch. Panic Button! really outdid themselves yet again. More people should at least give this game a try. It hooked me after about an hour
One million players on switch, but I can't find a group past Ceres. I'm stuck on Uranus because public groups are nil.
This doesn’t surprise me as this is the best 3rd party MMO game on Switch to date.
(Smash Bros is 1st party before anyone says “what about Smash Bros”)
1 mil in barely half a month and this is a 6 month old build.
There are events coming, new bosses and updates that will bring it in line with the other platforms.
The only free to play game that is truely free to play where everying in game can be farmed and built if you don’t want to buy with real money. It’s not pay to win. The only thing locked behind a paywall are the cosmetics.
The online community is the best I’ve experienced in an MMO and the developers arppear to listen to their players rather than aim to cash in on every game.
I’ve only paid for some platinum to support the developers as a thank you for the game as I would have happily have paid for this game.
Not surprising. It’s an excellent game.
That's pretty impressive.
Would download but my Switch doesn’t have enough storage and I don’t want to shell out extra money right now for a micro SD card. The available space on the Switch is ridiculous.
I mean - do I count as a player? I installed it and played it once
@Aurumonado
^ This, I'm wondering if they're just going off downloads or going by the game's regular players. Not knocking the game, but I only installed it and played a couple of times before I got bored. It looks and runs nice, and I respect the game for what it's trying to be, but I'm not really into grindy games outside of a select few such as Diablo 3 and I can't help but be turned off by the free to play economy. Even if it does do it better than other f2p games, microtransactions always lessen my enjoyment.
Also, I'm not going to be playing anything besides Smash for the next few months, so there's that.
Glad to hear.
I"m staying on PC. But if they ever do cross progression I'll give it another try.
Not gonna lie, this might be my favorite game I've played all year, just in terms of gameplay and value. Such a great game on switch.
I personally found this kind of boring. Maybe it hasn't clicked for me yet. One thing is for sure, the story is awful.
@LegendOfPokemon Haven you considered archiving games you aren't playing to save space? Also, a decent memory card is cheaper than a switch game right now, might be a nice gift for yourself this Christmas.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZtrFxdGUbs now there are 1 million more lose... eh "users" on the switch
@LUIGITORNADO you win a copy of Fortnite. Congratulations.
pretty bad for a f2p game
I'm having a great time with Warframe. Just building my first frame (Frost) and really enjoying the grind. Move over Rocket League: there's a new obsession in my life! 😁
It's fairly easy for a "free to play" game to rack up big player numbers because there's no risk to the customer to try it. The question is how many will stay for the long haul, and more importantly, how many will be willing to pay for microtransactions.
I just put a Magistar spear weapon up my butt to make the game more realistic.
I really wish I had more time to play this, but what I did spend with it so far has been really great.
A proud and happy one. Cant wait for the offline patch, so i can play on my breaks at work.
@Primarina ironically I think it's the fact it's pve and coop that keep backing me coming back to it unlike other free to play that are exclusively pvp focused and generally with no plot let alone universe building.
Tbh, I'd love to download and play this but I have such a back catalogue to finish first that it's going to take a while for me to start it.
@Primarina I'm Indielink in Warframe. Will definitely friend you there.
@Laxeybobby Super Smash Bros. isn’t an MMO, though. I don’t think you would offend anyone if you said an actual MMO was better at being an MMO than a fighting game.
@Laxeybobby not entirely sure you know what an MMO is. Not every game with online features is suddenly an MMO. MMOs involve all players on a server being in one environment simultaneously.
This is truly great news. I play it on PC, and have since day one. But the fact that the Switch player base has grown so quickly is amazing!
Im pretty addicted to it

@Laxeybobby Pretty sure Smash isn't an MMO dude, that's games like WoW, ESO and EVE.
They really need to adjust the early to mid content on this game. Unless you're absolutely new to shooters and/or action games, it's just a really tedious and mindlessly easy start.
I mean, I've seen gameplay of the mid to late content. So I know it can be fun. But it's such a boring grind to get there, I find myself switching back to other games in my backlog more often than not.
@Yorumi you ever tried a mouse and keyboard for this game on switch? I ask this because I know a mouse works for football manager on switch.
Im Darkhawk7 in Warframe. Named after the Marvel Comics character. Working my way through unlocking the star chart and also got me a kubrow- Lockjaw, also named after a Marvel character. Loving WF so far. Havent touched Destiny since WF came out to the switch.
The benefits of being free.
@geordie I don't hate Fortnite, but I do think it is massively overhyped and not nearly as good as it's popularity suggests. Fortnite is decent, and free, that's why it's popular. Emphasis on the free.
Good! They deserve it and more. A very well-made game! <3
The quality, graphics and amount of content alone could easily fill up two or three $60 AAA-games.
It actually pisses me off that more people bought Mass Effect Andromeda, Tiranfall 2 or Destiny 2 than tried this game..
I guess people would rather eat junk if you advertise it well enough.
@Primarina yeah I know. But It is only one way - I would be stuck on Switch.
I still play online Mostly at home. So makes no sense to leave PC to Switch for this game.
@Mordridakon you seem to be quite advanced. Did you port your account from PC? Or played like a ton? Ive been playing quite a lot. At least half an hour every day. Most days about an hour. And on weekends like 3 hours and im still far from uranus. If you advanced really quickly it makes sense that there are a lot of people who didnt yet
I've got the game, tried it and realise its not my genre. I like the free in a free to play game. It's more One million person have downloaded this game on Switch than One million players on Switch.
There is soo many games to play right now its sad i cant give this more love atm. Ive enjoyed it alot so far and cant wait to play a heap more. Panic button do incredible work 👍
@PhilKenSebben is an offline mode coming? I would love that but did not hear anything about it
Ironically, Fortnite got me into F2P games. If I had more SD card space, I'd play this on Switch. However, due to space constraints I play on X1. It's surprisingly good for a game you don't have to pay anything to play.
@PolarExperience @ShadJV @nessisonett
Sorry I thought that as Smash Bros has more players online in the game fighting at one time than a normal fighter such as MK or Street Fighter places it on the fringe of being an MMO. ‘an online video game which can be played by a very large number of people simultaneously.’
Either way both are great games in their own right.
@Laxeybobby I guess I see the confusion but MMOs means everybody on the server can see and interact with each other. Don’t think any fighters qualify for that, it’s mostly RPGs and shooters.
@ErnisDy I think I advanced faster than the general population because I did play a lot, which is why its hard to find a group. I'm now taking a "smash break" and hopefully that'll give a chance for people to play catchup.
@Aurumonado yup, like mobile, anyone who just downloads it counts.
@Balta666 One of the devs mentioned they were looking into it in the forums. They have to figure out level ups, items, etc. Its a ways out, and possibly might not happen, but fingers crossed.
@Frenean
Sounds like what I said about Smash Ultimate. Played it for a couple of minutes and got bored.
@BenAV Yeah. They promoted the living out of this game. Remember how they showed up at E3 and talked about nothing but this game all day? Or how about when Nintendo's surprise announcement at the recent game awards was about this game? Yeah. Promoted the living out of it.
This game deserves it. Best grinding shooter. The only reason I'm not playing on the Switch right now is because I prefer the PC version.
Not surprised, Warframe on Switch is FANTASTIC. AWESOME GAME.
I've been having a blast.
@Laxeybobby well said.
@GothicZM
Different strokes for different folks, but Smash is eclipsing Warframe's Switch player count so I'm not sure too many people, especially on this site, would agree with you.
@GothicZM @Frenean
It’s a comparison between apples and oranges. One is Sci-fi 3PS MMO, and the other is a platform brawler. I enjoy both.
Having said that, I am a little surprised that I still play a lot more Warframe than I do Smash. I was expecting it to be 50/50, but it’s more like 75/25 in Warframe’s favor.
Don’t get me wrong - I like Smash. But it hasn’t put much of a dent in my Warframe addiction.
@Frenean Then again, most people are stupid too.
@Ryzaerian No. One is actually pretty fun and the other is another redundant Smash game.
Is really nobody going to mention that they wrote 1,000,000 wrong on the Twitter video? No? Nobody? Only me?.... ok....
@Primarina I would be more than happy to!
Cool. I still can't believe how well this game turned out on Switch. Will be playing mostly Smash for a while, but I do intend to put more time into Warframe (and a little money) in the near future.
