It's a remarkably creative idea. Unfortunately creativity doesn't always translate into a popular or attractive product though. As much as I'm enamored with the concept, I really don't want to have a bunch of cardboard crafts I'll play with once before they start gathering dust and taking up space in my room.
This was pretty obvious though. After the massive phenomenon that was Pokemon GO and the decent success of Pokemon Quest, did anyone really think that The Pokemon Company wasn't working on another mobile title? If it really is TCG as is speculated, then that'd be awesome.
Here's my very realistic, totally not-fanboy expectations:
Metroid Prime Trilogy HD announced for Switch, releasing in February.
Metroid Prime 4 confirmed for 2019, gets an epic cinematic/gameplay trailer that blows everyone's minds.
Banjo Kazooie remaster is announced for Switch and Xbox.
This is followed by confirmation that Banjo and Kazooie will be the first DLC characters in Smash Ultimate.
Free demo of Smash Ultimate available immediately after the show.
Bayonetta 3 trailer confirms the game for Fall 2019.
The Last Story 2 announced for Switch.
Animal Crossing Switch trailer confirms it's releasing in April next year.
Link's Awakening HD Remake announced for Switch, uses the Breath of the Wild engine. Releases 2019.
There we go...I think those are some realistic hopes. If everything on this list doesn't come true I'll burn my Switch and Nintendo will be dead to me.
The timing of this game's localization leaves me hope that Yo-Kai Watch 4 is coming West sooner rather than later. Then again I may be reading into this a bit; I just want YKW4, that game looks super good!
"Will you be booting up Kid Icarus: Uprising on your 3DS while you wait for the release of Ultimate?"
While I haven't been playing Uprising to prep for Smash Ultimate (since my 3DS has kinda been gathering dust ever since I got my Switch) I have been playing another game to get hyped for Smash: Super Castlevania 4. I'm incredibly hyped to have the Belmonts in Smash, and it's great to play through this classic to get a feel for all the moves, items, settings, monsters, and music that will be in Ultimate. Though I must say, I'm glad that Ultimate has vastly improved Simon's air game compared to what he has in SC4
What we expected: Ninjas! Samurais! Big-breasted anime women! Bloody adrenaline-pumping action! What we got: Cute horsies running in circles with complex management and simulation
I don't want to get hyped for this because I don't want to be disappointed on Thursday, but they clearly saw how last year's one-two punch of revealing Bayonetta 1+2 for Switch followed by the announcement of Bayo 3 was so positively received, and I think it's likely they'll try to do something similar this year. This would be amazing. I'd love to finally play a real Metroid game on my favorite system. Not to mention that The Last Story 2 leaked on a German retailer website; could that be coming too? This year's awards could be an incredible night.
@Ralizah Thanks for the info. I was already intending on blitzing through Streets of Rage and Sonic 2 with my brother, so I'll certainly add Toejam and Earl to our multiplayer itinerary!
I've never played Toejam and Earl before so I can't say that this game has much personal significance for me (I grew up a Nintendo kid, after all). However, since I'm getting the Sega Genesis Classics collection for Christmas, I hope to rectify this issue soon and see what all the hype's about.
This does indeed look gorgeous, but considering the high price, meager amount of content on offer, and archaic design, I'll have to give it a pass unless it gets a very heavy price cut or sale.
Also, releasing a single arcade game for $30 when Sega is releasing a collection of 50 Genesis games for the same price really is the last nail in Toki's coffin, at least for me.
If this guy is making the game even harder, then he must be a sadist
That said, the game is absolutely brilliant, one of the most phenomenal, gorgeous, satisfying, and impactful games I've ever played. I know it doesn't stand a chance to win at the Game Awards against titans like God of War and Red Dead, but it's definitely my GotY.
It looks decent enough, but if I had a dollar for every time "roguelike," "retro," and "difficult" were used to describe an indie game, I'd be rich by now.
I'd imagine that "loot grind" is meant to gather positive connotations to something like Diablo III, which places more emphasis on dungeon crawling and finding items rather than story.
World of Light looks like a lot more fun than Subspace Emissary ever was, although I will miss the cutscenes. After all, those are the things that kept me coming back to Subspace, rather than the level design.
Still persisting with my holiday playthrough of A Link to the Past. I love how you can play the dungeons out of order if you know what to do--immediately after the Palace of Darkness I found the secret block just south of the Lost Woods to get to the Thieves' Hideout long before I was technically supposed to. I've only got a few more of these impeccably-designed dungeons left before facing Ganon--it always feels a bit bittersweet when I reach this point! I'm trying to pace myself now so that way I can save the final fight for Christmas Eve--it's my tradition to beat Ganon on the evening before Christmas. I know it doesn't really make sense, but that's my tradition and I have no intention of stopping now!
Also on the SNES Classic I've been replaying Super Castlevania IV to get hyped for Smash Ultimate. I cannot wait to try out the Belmonts in Smash, and I'm super eager to take down Dracula in classic mode and World of Light!
I certainly hope that Three Houses is released around that time and that this is more of a release party rather than a release-date-announcement expo. I think we've had to wait long enough for that game at this point!
On the one hand I'm pleased to hear that WayForward is involved since they know how to make a darn good metroidvania, but on the other hand it's super concerning to see a third party enter the project so late into development. It feels like this game will never come out at this point, and I'm worried that this will be another Kickstarter trainwreck.
The day-one update is cool, but that lead image reminds me of how awesome Incineroar looks. Like hot dang, his model is fantastic. Those fur textures looks great and I love all the personality the devs injected into his moveset. I was actively against Incineroar being in the game, but now that I've seen him in action I'm completely sold.
While this does look really cool and seems like it's a good fit for Switch, I've said it before and I'll say it again: for every Shovel Knight on Kickstarter you get a dozen Mighty Number 9's. I'll remain cautiously optimistic about this one for now.
I never understood why Nintendo was so dead-set against free advertisement. It's good to see them taking steps towards modernity with the Switch, albeit very slow and hesitant steps.
Looking at this video of a nice forest with a vintage image filter and random voice clips playing in the background has certainly made me want to buy this game.
Makes sense, the game is far more demanding than it may seem at first judging it strictly on its visual style. Here's hoping that all the hard work put into it has resulted in a quality port, as it'd be awesome to add this game to the list of prestigious indies on Switch.
Considering that this is one of the best soundtracks I've had the pleasure of hearing in recent years, I'm quite glad that it's continuing to get the attention it deserves! Very few battle themes have got me as pumped for the fight as Decisive Battle II or Battle at Journey's End. Incredible tracks!
Slightly controversial opinion here: A Link to the Past is the perfect open world Zelda, not Breath of the Wild. I came to this realization as I've continued my holiday tradition of playing through the game.
Whereas BotW eschews traditional story, dungeons, and items in order to have its open world progression, ALttP maintains its nonlinearity while preserving the traditional Zelda gameplay. You can do the dungeons in (almost) any order you want as long as you have the right items to beat them. Yes, there are some limitations such as needing to beat the Palace of Darkness before doing the other Dark World dungeons, but overall it allows lots of player choice in deciding where to go next while continuously giving you new items and story beats. It provides for lots of exploring and experimentation and also maintains a constant sense of progression in terms of new items and abilities.
If we could get a new 3D Zelda with the exact same design philosophy as A Link to the Past (with perhaps a bit more emphasis on story) then I'd get my dream Zelda game!
This looks awesome. I was surprised when it was announced without Switch, so it just feels right that it's coming to Nintendo now. It's just another example of how Switch is becoming the definitive Japanese console, especially with Sony alienating lots of Japanese devs and fans.
My life has been vastly improved by this knowledge. Thank you, Nintendolife, for only reporting on the most breaking news in the world of Nintendo gaming.
When I started playing this on PC I was shocked at how much fun it was. Yes, it's basically a Smash clone, but it's a darn good Smash clone!
Not to mention that it's completely free, and doesn't even require a Switch Online subscription. Now that it's on Switch it's even more dangerous--I can just pick it up, brawl for a few minutes, and then watch those minutes turn into hours as I grind up and unlock more characters. Single joycon multiplayer is super fun too, although it's a bit tricky to play in handheld mode due to how small the characters are.
Oh, and did I mention that it's free?! There's literally no reason not to play this game. It's the perfect way to tide over the agonizing wait until Smash Ultimate.
And by the way, in case I didn't mention it yet, it's free! Go check it out, you won't regret it!
There's probably about a dozen other characters I'd have preferred over Piranha Plant, but I'm still hyped for its inclusion. It looks like a super unique fighter that really adds to the game's variety, and I'm all over that!
@Trajan I was actually referring to Isaac from Golden Sun and Geno from Super Mario RPG, both of whom are hardly relevant characters nowadays but still super popular candidates for Smash. I think Xenoblade isn't exactly 'niche' anymore, at least not among Nintendo fans.
Is it not possible for everyone to stop spewing vitriol at this man for not putting their favorite niche JRPG protagonist or Mario side character in the game and appreciate the gargantuan effort he's taken to make us, the fans, happy? Sakurai has put his heart and soul into this game, creating the largest roster in series history, including fan favorites and creative newcomers, over a hundred epic stages, and what seem to be the best single player modes in the series yet. It really is a miracle that he can create these incredible experiences, and let's hope we can let him know how much he's appreciated despite the trolls.
As far as I can recall Starlink is the only new Ubisoft game on Switch since Mario + Rabbids that anyone's actually cared about, so of course the sales are going to be low if it doesn't take into account the only game that could feasibly bump those numbers.
Also, if Ubisoft actually had more big games on Switch to begin with then this might not have been much of a problem...
I mean I don't want to feed relatively baseless rumors about new hardware next year, but I can't help feeling that this video was made for the future millions of people who'll want to upgrade from their Gen 1 Switches to the new and improved Switch Pro's. Then again, it's likely meant for people who want to buy the Smash, Pokemon, or Diablo bundles and save the rest of their progress.
I'm so glad that many of the original developers are back! While it doesn't excuse Telltale's awful treatment of their employees before closing down, it's good to hear that at least some of them have managed to keep working. Hopefully they can produce a quality product to finish the series on a high note after all this imbroglio.
I mean this isn't a big deal by any means (there's already 900 other awesome tracks in the game after all) but it still sucks since FF7 has some incredible music. It would have been nice to include some of the other incredible battle themes like J-E-N-O-V-A or One Winged Angel, which would have been awesome additions to the game and excellent for smashing to.
These are some pretty good sales for a non-mainline game. It's unfair to compare it to Sun and Moon since that was released at a time when Pokemon hype was at the highest it'd been since the late 90's, and I doubt we'll ever see Pokemon reach that insane level of popularity again unless Game Freak somehow catches lightning in a bottle again and makes another Pokemon Go.
I'm most interested in seeing the Japanese numbers though. I know it'll do big sales-wise, but I'm interested in just how big it'll be. Will it exceed Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon?
That is one bizarre digital release, it seems like you're effectively buying half the game. For that reason I think it's going to be worthwhile to wait for the physical version.
Man, I feel bad for the team to crunch so much on a single demo all for Nintendo to decide at the last minute that they didn't want to show it anyway.
Nintendo was so cocky coming off the success of the Wii. While I wish the Wii U had been more successful, I'm glad that it's taught Nintendo humility in dealing with third parties.
