Nobody can deny that Final Fantasy contains some of the best music in gaming history. Unfortunately, it seems that no new songs from its strong line up will be making it into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
There is the possibility additional tracks could be unlocked through gameplay, but for now, we're only looking at the same two tracks from Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U. The returning songs being "Those Who Fight" and "Those Who Fight Further," the normal and boss battle themes, respectively, from Cloud's own Final Fantasy VII.
Additionally, it appears that no spirits from Square Enix franchises will be available in the game either.
What songs do you hope will be present in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

So glad Square Enix went all-out to show their support for Nintendo!
Not a huge loss.
My favorite is "Bramble Blast" which I'm fully expecting to make it in.
Not really that worried.
well, Geno is a spirit
Not worried at all, there is already enough in smash
Having awesome tracks like JENOVA, Bombing Mission and Birth of a God or, heck, even tracks from other FF titles would be awesome so obviously sucks a lot. But at the same time I was expecting this, a real shame.
@OmegaDestroyer That’s the most correct thing anyone has ever said ever
Hm... that's odd. Considering Geno is confirmed as a spirit, I though Squeenix spirits would be in, if only a couple more.
Absolutely dumb, but whatever, didn't expect any more anyway after Smash 4 only got two songs. Probably safe not to expect any more Square Enix representation in this game at all then either.
Oh, good. Something else about SSBU for people to overreact to.
The lack of SE spirits is a bit disappointing, but it seems like there are already hundreds of spirits from across the video game world.
Still, it's quite weird, especially when you consider that Cloud is in the game...
No new Final Fantasy tracks? Preorder canceled! /S
They seem to have begrudgingly let Cloud in Smash... Really odd behaviour.
There goes my hopes of expecting a song from The World Ends With You or any Spirits like Neku.
I wish they would have cut Cloud, lol. I absolutely hate playing against him.
Sad, but not that big of a deal.
Meanwhile there should be all sorts of Final Fantasy music and spirts in the game, as well as Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Dragon Warrior and Mario Hoops 3 on 3.
@Mando44646 Is Geno straight up confirmed as a spirit? A lot of people love to point to that shot of him in the Battle Arena but that could just be an avatar logo and not a spirit.
I mean this isn't a big deal by any means (there's already 900 other awesome tracks in the game after all) but it still sucks since FF7 has some incredible music. It would have been nice to include some of the other incredible battle themes like J-E-N-O-V-A or One Winged Angel, which would have been awesome additions to the game and excellent for smashing to.
Well that's one way Nintendo could punish Square for rejecting them for Sony back in 1997.
At this point, we would've settled for only more FF7 music. Having only two is embarrassing.
NOOOOOOOOOO. Ugh, why Squeenix, WHY?
@Expa0 Don't forget we could get more Fantasy with the Mystery DLC Fighters!
@Aerona That's what it feels like, but it doesn't even make sense given the upcoming Switch port and the Remake that they need to promote. Somebody must not want to pony up for any more song royalties.
Forests' Mushrooms would've been a nice way to ease the Geno blow, but oh well.
Disappointing but expected...
Rather unfortunate, but I'm still glad we have two of the most iconic ones from FF7. Still, would be awesome to have One-Winged Angel playing on Midgar.
Man the rights for Final Fantasy must be a mess.
It's not like Final Fantasy is THE RPG anymore though.
Aw that kinda stinks, but oh well.
If they saved One Winged Angel to release alongside Sephiroth as one of the 5 DLC fighters all will be forgiven.
Odd when you consider Castlevania has over 30 but I guess SE is just a bit more picky with licensing out their properties to other company's games.
@rjejr hmm... I could get behind this. Sephiroth is far from my first choice for DLC characters (even from the FF series) but he’s also far from my last. And if it means we get One Winged Angel, I’ll bite; FFVII may not be my favorite FF game but that might be my favorite song from the series.
And hey... I’m sure Sephiroth is better than at least one person we end up getting as DLC.
Square Enix aren't too smart about licensing their music or properties, they could stand to earn much more by reeling it back a bit.
They aren't as big of a deal as they think they are, and this is why they're losing big money on triple-A developments.
It's not surprising considering that it is a Nintendo game, and it will be expensive to license Square Enix stuff, especially when Square Enix has had piss poor support on Nintendo consoles until the Switch...
They’re allowing FFVII to release on the switch, as well as other FF games, and cloud in smash, and put great games like octopath traveler on switch, and yet won’t give more awesome music?? Cmon Square.
And I really wanted a Chrono spirit but oh well
"Apparently, seems, possibility."
Those three words nullify this article as truth. C'mon lovely people. Enough with the rumours. If i wanted a dirt sheet, I'd go to the Enquirer.
@Mando44646 He's not. He's a tag in the online mode.
Meanwhile Banjo Kazooie could have 20+ songs and instead we're getting the template character <3
What songs do you hope will be present? I love Smashing to "Go K.K. Rider!" and "7:00 PM - 8:00 PM" from Animal Crossing. I'm sure they'll be in again.
I think it'd be neat if they could add some of Theophany's mixes from Majora's Mask.
And since Rathalos is present, it'd be nice to get at least a main theme from Monster Hunter.
Kinda dumb. Didn't expect dozens and dozens, but a few more FF7 tunes would be nice. Especially since it's now coming to Switch.
@Syrek24 I do recall songs being a major unlock category in Smasg WiiU so more songs actually being unlockables is well within the realm of possibilities.
Perhaps even part of some updates' content.
...Something tells me Geno isn't getting in now...I never cared FF, so whatever on that. But....wtf Square?
As long as I can adjust my tie to Victory Fanfare, I’m good.
Just mod the sound database and add more FF music, problem solved
I'm just hoping we get a Sonic remix besides Brawl's Angel Island Zone. Or at least one of the 4+ official Green Hill Zone remixes Sega has already made in the past 7 years instead of having the 1991 version as default
@ShadJV I dunno how likely sephiroth is as a DLC character let alone even a final fantasy character being part of DLCs.
In fact I've been noting a trend lately of Smash's third party contributors, as far back as WiiU in fact, starting to use DLCs to introduce different IPs rather than flesh out already represented IP.
For an example on WiiU, when Capcom brought a DLC character it wasn't took introduce another Megaman character(the IP that Smash WiiU featured in the base game) but instead to introduce another IP in the form of Street Fighter's Ryu. Now they're fleshing out the Street Fighter roster with Ken, but that's with the IP now being part of the base game.
This said we saw something similar to the DLC effect I've described, with Konami this time. Rather than introduce more Metal Gear characters in the next Smash, they instead took the occasion to introduce Castlevania with the Belmonts. Then again until now they had only a single IP represented whereas Capcom already had two.
With how hard it would be to top Cloud in term of visibility within the Final Fantasy
franchise, and taking into account the trenendous stable of IPs under Square's wings(including Final Fantasy's own biggest competitor in Japan, Dragon Quest*), I actually doubt a DLC Square Enix character would come from any Final Fantasy game.
*in fact I'd say they would have everything to win from a -Dragon Quest- character. The IP is stupidly popular in japan and would see people buying Smash just they could then buy the DLC as well... meanwhile Smash Bros would itself give the IP tremendous visibility basically everywhere else, probably just at the same time that more Dragon Quest games would be coming to Switch in the form of Dragon Quest Builders 2 and the switch port of Dragon Quest XI.
Oh look, Square Enix being stingy IP hoarding jerks as always.
Sad, but hey its allright
@Syrek24 I'm definitely eager to find out.
Personally I hope for a Square Enix character DLC to be from Dragon Quest. Of all Square Enix's IPs, it's the one with the strongest ties to Nintendo to the point of Nintendo even directly localizing and publishing some titles to the start when Square wouldn't. And the IP is basically one of the most crazy popular in Japan while Smash could be a perfect vehicle to give it a Fire Emblems-like boost in the west(Fire Emblem was virtually unknown in the west until Melee's inclusion of Marth and Roy).
Plus it has many strong contenders that could be easily implemented in Smash to choose from as representative(DQ3's Erdrick, DQ11's Luminary or even a mage like Veronica for a magic ranged glass cannon, Dragon Quest Builders' "builder"... even the Slime designed by Akira Toriyama is now a possible contender thanks to the precedent set by Pirhana Plant).
It is sad to hear this news, but is it really news? I think the only substantial proof of this so far was the smash direct showcasing only two songs from the final fantasy series so far. It's far too soon to suggest that there's only two songs unless anything has been officially confirmed by Nintendo Sakurai or Square Enix.
Edit: I will say that it would not be completely unexpected if this was true. While we don't have set numbers for how many songs per franchise, we do know approximately how many songs total which is over 800. We also know that all together there's approximately 28 hours of songs. That already is detailing approximately 2:06 timelength / song. If that 28 hours specifically designates including the 900-plus sounds, I could easily see the songs increasing up to 3 minutes each. But even at that it is hard to say because we also know that songs are unlockable. It could have been that the smash footage they showed us was from an account that did not have all Smash Brothers Final Fantasy songs unlocked yet.
Less stuff they put in, the less we "loose" if the next game (or port) comes around if Square decides that no, they will not partake.
@ShadJV Sephiroth
I've always thought PSASBR would have sold better if Sephiroth was the final boss and he entered to 1 Wing Angel. Not that it would have sold well, but I may have purchased it before it hit $5. The announcement of his DLC would certainly generate some buzz.
And really, what's the point of having Cloud in the game, and even selling 2 Cloud amiibo, if he isn't going to get to fight Sephiroth? Sephiroth amiibo would certainly sell out.
@Ludovsky I wouldn’t argue with you there, I was mainly responding to another message. While I could see another FF character as an echo (like Ken and Richter), no DLC characters will be echoes... I was mainly saying I wouldn’t be upset if Sephiroth was added.
As for Dragon Quest? Idk, I don’t think the characters are as iconic there, admittedly I’ve only played 4 or 5 games in the series but the characters rarely stand out to me more than enemies (like slimes) or villains (like Dhoulmagus). Plus I expect any third party characters to have more worldwide popularity, DQ is gaining popularity in the Western market and is definitely doing well, but it’s still primarily a Japanese series. Personally, I probably enjoy DQ more than FF but I wouldn’t want any of the characters playable in Smash, at most just an Assist Trophy.
@DarthNocturnal That too.
But even from FF7, no One-Winged Angel.
Or the victory music.
@ShadJV The popularity point is what I mean. We always think of characters as stuff that should have "worldwide" popularity but we forget that Smash itself does still come from a country that IS Japan.
They've got Smash fans there as much as everywhere else at the end of the day.
It's like I was saying, Fire Emblems wasn't even known and even less existed at all in the USA when they added characters from that franchise to Super Smash Bros Melee. So at the time of Smash Bros Melee, Marth and Roy very much were characters of the Japan-only market with no official english localizations.
Yet their inclusion was enough to spark curiosity, and that curiosity is what led to the franchise finally making it west in the end before cementing it's place as a worldwide franchise for Nintendo.
In comparison, Dragon Quest has western presence on Nintendo consoles all the way back to it's four original games on the NES, at a time Final Fantasy itself had still only had the original Final Fantasy game available in the west with localizations of II and III's only happening in later remakes.
It's only the mistep of no western release in the SNES era that actually put RPGs on the map that prevented Dragon Quest from building any momentum whereas the later merger of Squaresoft and Enix led the merger to almost exclusively favor Squaresoft's Final Fantasy for western localizations over Enix's Dragon Quest.
Even then, when the DS era later came it's Nintendo themselves who contacted Square-Enix about the DS(and later 3DS) remakes
of the original Dragon Quest games and outright offered to localize and publish them for Square-Enix in their stead
They didn't sell that much but Nintendo again did the "publishing and localizing one of SquareEnix's own game in their stead" as recently as this year with the Switch port of Dragon Quest Builders which's already built a small cult following already ready to continue momentum in the sequel once it releases westward in 2019 that is likely to be published by Nintendo again.
In a way, that's why the choice of a Dragon Quest representative feels logical.
It gives Nintendo a chance to score a huge hit with their local Japanese market and to increase the worldwide visibility of the one Square Enix IP in which they have what might as well be described as personal stakes of their own(being the official publisher for many of these games in the west is bound to come with many perks... and 2019 alone is confirmed to get a Switch port of Dragon Quest XI and a western localization of the upcoming Dragon Quest Builders 2. And that's if they decide to stop there and don't try to double down on that momentum by also localizing/porting the existing 3DS/PS4 japan remakes of DQ1-2-3 as a Switch exclusive game in the west, to name just these titles).
Edit: Just to add.... I don't exclude the possibility of being absurdly wrong.
Final Fantasy remains a strong IP and at the end of the day Square also possesses other IPs like Tomb Raiders/etc which for some reason they might try to promote more in Japan while appealing to western fans in a surprise move.
At the same time I feel Dragon Quest(with it's strong historic presence on Nintendo console) stands more chances of getting a DLC character next year(especially with the major Dragon Quest titles releasing that year on Switch) than IPs like Kingdom Hearts which have more of an history with Sony's console than they do with Nintendo's(ontop of being tied to another third party to boot in the form of Disney, adding yet another party to the negotiation table and likely resulting hurdles) bar a few minor titles on 3DS and gameboy advance.
Definitely strengthens my doubt that any of the additional DLC characters will be Square ones. No biggie.
I'm not too concerned with music in my games either way. Only tunes I really indulge in are nes games as they're such a part of my childhood. And especially zelda games soundtracks. Those are always unmistakable. Lastly, the best music I've heard as of late is in the messenger. Some of the best background music in a game ever.
Really...they could not have bother to add one or two more songs?? Really??
2 Those 2 Fight
It can join EarthBound now.
It doesn't have any new songs either. ;;
Well, we've known this since E3 or whatever, but it's still pretty sad. Not having any FF souls is also quite disappointing. Oh well.
That's definitly Square's fault, the other 3rd party got a lot more love.No wonder Square have a 33 millions dollars loss, they can't make good decisions lol
Geno unconfirmed.
@Ludovsky I still disagree. Cases like Fire Emblem happened because it’s a Nintendo first party... and this was several entries ago, when Smash was still fairly new. We haven’t had a character like that since (Pit hardly counts because Nintendo was planning Uprising by the time Brawl was released, and he was from a first party game in Nintendo’s history), every character added from Brawl onward was from a game already released in the West that had more universal notoriety... or celebrated Nintendo’s past. And that’s all FIRST party. Third party characters? All of them have had huge Western popularity. The least of them was Bayonetta and she was one of the biggest third party supporters in the Wii U era. I would bet money that our DLC characters will not be a DQ character that Nintendo encouraged Sakurai to put in to generate Western interest in a third party series who’s last two mainline games haven’t even reached Nintendo in the West. Cloud was included because he has huge worldwide popularity. It was good for Nintendo because it reached a larger audience. And yes, Nintendo is Japanese, but Smash has been pushing towards international appeal for a couple games now. Looking at the pattern of third party characters, DQ doesn’t follow that and there’s little incentive for Nintendo to put one of those characters in as DLC. I’d hazard a guess that at least 3 of the 5 characters will be first party, and any third parties filling the remaining slots either will be characters with a lot of history or characters with strong ties to Nintendo. Ultimately, Nintendo may be Japanese but they want this DLC to sell well in all regions. Dragon Quest will do well in Japan, but a large portion of their larger market will only pay for a few more characters if they appeal to them, not to discover new franchises. They wouldn’t risk DLC sales for the sake of a third party franchise’s chance to grow.
@Kriven I think that's people confusing it with a very similar looking character from a Kirby game: https://kirby.fandom.com/wiki/Gooey
Something tells me the fact that FF7 originally coming out as a PS1 exclusive has something to do with this...
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Without.
People complaining should beg Square Enix to make their own Super Final Fantasy Smash game. If they want more Final Fantasy music in the game.
This in a Sakurai game. We should just pray that Bandi Namco don't magical unicorn poop up their part in it.
Couldn't care less. I have never been a Squaresoft fan and I feel like they shoehorn Final Fantasy fan lore into far too many things these days.
Not really surprised. Squeenix has long half-assed their support for Smash, and this one's no different. Would've been great to see some other third-party enthusiastically take their place, but since this is Ultimate, they had to shoehorn Cloud and whatever little content Squeenix allowed back in.
@Trajan Why do you keep making the claim that FF7 is Iwata's favorite game? Why, man!?
@TriforceBun Someone on here had something about it. Can't find any source now though. So I'll stop posting it until I find it again.
