Nintendo Labo was well-received initially but has struggled to maintain sales momentum as the year has progressed. Despite its inability to generate mass appeal, Nintendo has been able to roll out educational programs and also create music videos with the assistance of its cardboard creations.
TIME has clearly noticed these achievements, naming Labo as one of the best inventions of 2018. It praised the kits for allowing gamers to create their own fun. Here's a tweet about it from Nintendo of America:

Nintendo's most recent Labo release was the Vehicle Kit in September. In the Japanese charts, it didn't perform as well as the Robot and Variety Kit. Nintendo has said on multiple occasions Labo is here to stay. The Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé has even said how it's similar to Brain Age and Wii Fit - with the primary goal being to appeal to a non-gaming audience.
Are you surprised to hear Nintendo's cardboard video game crossover is one of the best inventions of 2018? Is this what you expected the future to be like? Tell us below.

Cardboard is one of the best inventions of 2018...Technology is moving forward!
But in terms of sells... ahem ahem... :/
Glad to see Labo doing well critically.
Yay, LABO !
Next, Toy Con 04 featuring Camera, Bird, etc.
It's a remarkably creative idea. Unfortunately creativity doesn't always translate into a popular or attractive product though. As much as I'm enamored with the concept, I really don't want to have a bunch of cardboard crafts I'll play with once before they start gathering dust and taking up space in my room.
It really is an incredibly creative usage of inputs and outputs
I may not have touched in in almost a year but I'd be lying if I said building the robot set wasn't fun
I wish Nintendo would do more with labo, it has potential to be great.
Not for me, but I think Labo exemplifies the out of the box 📦 (haha) thinking the company is known for.
@Anti-Matter This leads me to believe that the next Toy-Con is related to the zoo or safari.
TIME says this, but the stuff they featured from the Consumer Electronics Expo (I give up on providing a link) could actually be revolutionary. Not trying to downplay LABO, it’s just that I wouldn’t say it’s one of the best inventions of the year.
The best Labo invention of the year would have been a vacuumed sealed Labo storage system that let our Labo kits take up 75% less room, b/c as it is now I've never buying another Labo kit after #1 b/c it just takes up way too much room. There's not only the 5 main kits but also all of the little pieces to keep track of that go along with it.
I'm not opposed to stuff, we have nearly 200 toys to life toys, but those sit neatly on shelves, the Labo stuff is just too big and bulky.
I keep forgetting this is a thing. The last thing I heard about it, was that it was now being used in Schools or something? Which is a pretty cool idea I suppose.
I love cardboard.
Nintendo Labo is a great idea that is really worth experiencing more with that project, however its only poor details were the overpricing and a little lack of more development for better projects;
but, adding the fact of the "sad fame" it had, thanks especially to the, excuse me to use this word, people ""Ignorant"" that since the beginning Nintendo has mentioned that this project was more directed to a "childish" public, why people complain so much about something that ""is not directed to them as a first point""?, seriously, this is very ridiculous, but yes, with seeing some comments here still, the internet on any day ..., oh well...
I agree. I just don’t have anywhere to put them now...
@The_Legged_One the software really not bring fully fleshed out, at least as far as the gaming side, really holds it back.
What I do think would have helped sell these was a holiday reveal and release. I think it has a lot of the qualities to have been the “IT! toy” this Christmas.
Even the price while expensive in March is about right for what people are willing to spend for Christmas on kids and grandkids if they think it’s whats hot this year. Tickle me Elmo was like $60 twenty years ago. They’d probably have even more leeway price wise since it’s “educational” so people would feel good about buying it for the kids that “spend too much time on the couch!”
But instead everyone who saw or shared that trailer on Facebook 6 months ago have probably long forgotten about it and even Nintendo has moved on to pushing Pokémon and Smash Ultimate.
That’s another thing. I think it would have been great counter programming to smash. No ones gonna pick these over that game but it would have been a reason for a different crowd to have the Switch on their mind.
Remember when LABO was going to be the big Christmas item
But hey, it got mentioned in a "Toys, Games & Entertainment" list with no actual games 🙃
The thing I love about LABO the most is the amount of neckbeards it made go into meltdown. It's clever and it gets kids brains working and from a design point of view it's superb. Clearly marketed "for the young, and young at heart" should have been a clue that it wasn't for them. It's a children's educational toy. Anyone expecting some hardcore 40 hour experience with space marines was seriously deluded.
Great, I can't wait for Miyamoto to use this as a reason to start making Nintendo teams incorporate labo into Mario and Zelda main entries.
I know we all chuckle about the cardboard, but I think it's pretty cool that they didn't put anymore plastic out there with this concept. Much like others have said, I admire the creativity and if my kid(s) asked for something like this, I'd be pretty happy to buy it for them.
Seems to me Nintendo just need to advertise it more and convince families to buy it? Could be a slow burner... when Switch is consistently at a £250 with a game price point, I think Labo could start to do quite well.
@WiltonRoots couldn't said it better trolls are bashing it because they lack any real innovative creative intelligence to start with. This was for the creative side of the mind but was something they don't have anymore or failed to pass in education 101.
@WiltonRoots there couldn't be a better placement for your comment, the perfect follow up!
@gortsi Yep! I didn't even see that when I posted it, I couldn't have timed it better. It was one of those ones where while you're hitting post a couple more appear.
It's a bit sad that everyone points at the Cardboard - when the Software that is LABO is absolutely Genius!
LABO is better than Call Of Duty for your Kids on Xmas morning. .
Its also one of the biggest financial flops of 2018...
