Here's an interesting video that is sure to fuel rumours about a possible Switch revision. Nintendo's American YouTube account has uploaded a step-by-step video walkthrough explaining how users can transfer data from one Switch to another and also format their system in preparation for trade-in or sale.
The safe bet is this video is targeted towards anyone who might be upgrading to the recently released Diablo: III Eternal Collection and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! Switch bundles this holiday season. As can be seen above, the clip explains how to backup compatible games on the paid cloud service and then goes onto the finer points about transferring data across to a new system. It also worth noting how it shows data being traded from an original system to a Pokémon-themed one.
Of course, if Nintendo hasn't just published this out of necessity, there's always room for speculation. In October, there was a rumour the Japanese company was looking to reinvigorate Switch hardware sales with a system revision towards the end of 2019. The source - The Wall Street Journal - said the new model would include an improved LCD display and the overall goal was to make the system "brighter, thinner and more energy-efficient".
What do you make of this? Would you trade your Switch for a Switch? Tell us below.

I wouldn't mind seeing a more powerful Switch. I'd probably buy it.
I don't know why anyone would go out of their way for one of the new console bundles if they already got a Switch, they are the same exact console only with some decals on the dock and in the case of the Pokemon bundle unique joycons.
@Kalmaro I wouldn't be expecting a more powerful Switch, if anything they might just release some kind of Switch mini that is more of a dedicated portable, but then again this is all just speculation.
I think they're trying to get rid of old Switches with the hardware exploit.
Hence them actively supporting the gamestop trade in deal.
@JayJ Switch mini huh? Sounds like a 3d-
Nooooope. Nope nope nope. Not doing that again.
@Trajan that makes sense. It's their only option at this point.
How would a Switch mini address the fact that Switch games are $80 a piece (at least $30 more than a 3ds game)?
It's the NX gaiz!
Why encourage trading in and selling? I thought the sale of used systems hurts Nintendo because they don't make money off the sale like they do with new systems.
I can't wait to transfer my Splatoon 2 save data to my new system!
What's that you say? Splatoon 2 doesn't support cloud saving, so that can't be transferred?
Well screw you too Nintendo!!!
....really, I love Nintendo but I'm still incredibly salty that Nintendo refuses to allow cloud saving for this game. I put almost 1000 hours into it now and I don't want to lose that. There is just no excuse. Nintendo has plenty of smart people, surely they can figure a way to allow the game to be backed up. This way, if I ever want to upgrade or just get a cool limited edition switch, I'm totally screwed out of that, lest I wanna lose all that progress. Thanks for nothing Nintendo.
Yeah. Really odd Nintendo kind of telling people what to do for trade-ins.
I mean I don't want to feed relatively baseless rumors about new hardware next year, but I can't help feeling that this video was made for the future millions of people who'll want to upgrade from their Gen 1 Switches to the new and improved Switch Pro's. Then again, it's likely meant for people who want to buy the Smash, Pokemon, or Diablo bundles and save the rest of their progress.
@ALinkttPresent Yea, I saw this last night and thought it was very strange...
At the very least it gives a first impression, for those who just see the video title, that there must be a reason to trade or sell.
Eg. We aren't confident of our product's quality.
I would've titled it something like, "transfering data of your Switch console" or something personally.
A more powerfull switch is coming
This will come in handly when there is a new Switch available.
Wouldn't the whole process be a lot simpler if I could just backup my saves to a USB drive?
New one incoming! Gonna love it.
@Trajan
If so it's a waste on Nintendo's part. Every console eventually gets software hacked. It'll happen with the Switch.
@Trajan that would only work if they are actively purchasing the used Switches from GameStop. However I would not count that out completely.
@ALinkttPresent usually for GameStop you are trading in a used system for the purchase of a new system. So in that case Nintendo is guaranteeing at least one new system purchase and potentially a new Switch owner when the used one gets purchased. That leads, of course, to more sales of the same games the first owner had such as Evergreens like Zelda or Mario Kart.
@Yosher number one reason not to upgrade your switch right here. Not specifically because of Splatoon 2, but because Nintendo is completely inept at allowing save data to be retained successfully. I support them when they do smart things but this save data issue is anything but that.
@Yosher You don't need to use cloud saves to transfer data. You can do it locally: https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Support/Nintendo-Switch/Usage/How-to-Transfer-User-and-Save-Data/How-to-Transfer-User-and-Save-Data-1294746.html
@Trajan No, if they were that desperate they would give you the new Switch for free. Trying to purge the old Switch's would be a waste of time anyway. The Switch Homebrew scene is already very large and software exploits on newer Switch's are possible.
Quick question concerning Splatoon 2 specifically:
If you buy a new console, but keep your Nintendo account and log in with that, are your rankings and outfits kept or not? Since I put around 2,5k hours into the game I sort of don't want to lose my collection. I know I can always climb back up the ranks if I were to lose my progress, but losing all the carefully crafted equipment sets (and given the random nature of rolling for abilities) would be quite a bummer.
If the main reason is to let consumers trade in a functioning product for a new, identical, one (apart from the exterior) this is just plain wrong. We've got one planet people, one!
My first thought when I read the headline was "New version on the Switch incoming"
However unless were talking night & day differences I've no desire to upgrade so early into the Switch's life span.
SuperSaltyDave has probably made 6 videos off the back of this proclaiming it as the signs of a new Switch "Pro" coming out...
My new Smartphone was updated with all my apps, books, music, games, etc without the need of my old phone.
The idea of a Trade In is that you get a deal, give your old Switch with the balance of money and you receive the new Switch.
Otherwise its called buying and selling, buy a new Switch and then sell the old one, just when the market is flooded with old Switches.
It's time Nintendo thought of a better way of transferring data.
The Switch Pro rumors have been echoing for a while. Hope it happens and soon! More juice means more ports, and if this last year is anything to go by, we're going to need them (especially as we move into the next console generation).
Dude! I can't bring my save states from one Switch to another? Or did I get it wrong? I have to purchase Nintendo Online to save my save states nevertheless? Please tell me, I'm wrong. O_o
Not really interested in trading in my Switch for a different Switch that has some decals on it.
I would absolutely buy a new Switch with improved hardware. I've heard there is a newer version of the same Tegra (I think that's how it is spelled) chip that they used for the Switch. I'd also consider it if they just released one with more built in storage, a stronger battery, and a screen that has much small bevels.
But even then, I don't sell my consoles anymore. I did that when I was younger and always found months later that I regretted it.
All I'd like I anew revision is a bigger battery and maybe figure out a way to make those buttons on the left joycon interchangeable with a solid d-pad.
Apart from that I think the screen size is pretty much spot on. Maybe work on the clarity of the speakers too.
But as is the system is still a damn fine system.
I'm just assuming this video is specifically aimed at those getting the themed console but still......the possibility of a stronger console or a mini is a nice thought.
Just please no "exclusives" that will work better on the new than the old Nintendo. Like how hyrule warriors was nearly unplayable on anything other than a new 3ds.
@Yosher since you got me all worried, I just thought I'd check - if you do a system-to-system transfer, your save data for games that cannot Cloud Save is transferred across, so that's always an option if you really want to make sure your Pokémon and Splatoon progress stays with you forever.
Sorry, I was worried that much, that I started typing before reading the comments above. Being able to carry over the save files to another Switch without having Nintendo Online and cloud backups is a great relief. Thanks!
@tudsworth @123akis That's good then, but they could've done a better job communicating that in the video. ..still doesn't excuse the totally stupid lack of cloud support for Splatoon 2, but at least I know I can safely upgrade to a new system now, if I ever want to. Thank you both!
@Euler $80 for a Switch game and $50 for a 3DS game? Are those Canadian prices?
@jtmnm they are not going to release a more powerful Switch this gen.
And even if they did, it wouldn't get anything extra as it won't be as powerful as PS4. And then PS5 is coming.
The system has been available for just 20 months that Nintendo already plan to release a new version of the Switch...
The new acquirers for Christmas 2019 will be really happy to see that the pokémon Let's go Pikachu, pokémon Let's go Eevee, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Diablo 3, Fortnite bundles were made to liquidate the old stock...
Merry Christmas ! :/
Screw a more powerful switch just give me one that I can change the battery out myself
@Kalmaro myself as well
This caught me completely off guard. Surely a helpful video after a redesign reveal, but before it? This is Nintendo officially saying "if you want to sell your Switch, here's what you need to do" in broad daylight.
I don't care if they come out with a new one. But there better not be exclusive games for it
The Switch does not need a revision. The way Nintendo treats its customers does. The way Nintendo treats its customers need a very deep and complete revision.
@LuckyLand as in how please document it for us here.
@GoatWrench13 Yes, but Nintendo doesn't really do convenience.
@SwitchForce
Manual save files backup free for everybody, not "only cloud backups" locked behind a subscription and Nintendo consoles retrogames available for purchase like the Virtual console have always been, not "only rent" locked behind a subscription.
They are pretending like they give more things to consumers who pay the subscription but this is not true, they are taking away things to consumers who does not pay. They are not giving anything special to people who pay the subscription, they are blatantly mistreating people who don't pay and taking away from them functions and things that should be available to everybody.
They are using Switch to exploit consumers they must stop that.
@SwitchForce Don't bother with him. He is making those ridiculous conspiracy theories about how Nintendo is scamming their consumers with the Switch and other nonsense.
@Alantor28 but remember it's fun to poke at.
