@Not_Soos When I saw a similar topic reported on another website, I saw one comment that went along the lines of "Only the left cares about gender statistics" before ranting about how it's excessive political correctness to try and include more women in business projects, etc. I tend to see that argument pop up on gaming websites whenever gender is discussed. I'm rather conservative as well, but I simply can't follow that. Talent is talent, regardless of your gender, ethnicity, whatever.
I'll be interested to see how this comment section turns out. Let's see if it becomes as political as the topic has become on other sites, or maybe people will realize that this simply a matter of business more than any political agenda. Allowing more diverse groups of people to work in the field of game development can only be a good thing for the variety, quality, professional opportunities, and reputation of an industry that has made a name for itself for toxicity and awful working conditions. Good on Nintendo for all they've done in that regard.
@AlexSora89 I get that, I understand not everyone has the same rabid nostalgia for ALttP as I do! I'll most likely be there day 1 for Hazelnut Bastille though, it looks like the best ALttP successor since A Link Between Worlds.
@AlexSora89 Hazelnut Bastille does look amazing, but nothing can beat my nostalgia for ALttP. Besides, can't really say Hazelnut Bastille will be better than ALttP until it actually comes out.
I'm not normally one to complain about DLC, but good lordy that's an utterly massive amount of DLC. It almost feels like it should either be included in the base game or be a separate game entirely.
I've heard lots of good things about this game, and I've been tempted by it every time it's included in a Steam sale (which is pretty often). However, if it is indeed coming to Switch, I'll probably be holding off for that version. Portability always wins!
How can you possibly question the Nintendo Seal of Quality, when it has single-handedly curated an incredible library of instant classics on Switch like Vroom in the Night Sky and WWE 2K18?
...
Yeah, the Seal is basically useless aside from letting you know the game (probably) won't brick your console. However, I don't think it should really be anything other than that. As long as they don't blow up your Switch, I'd say let developers bring their games to Nintendo with their vision intact, and their quality will naturally rise to the top.
Out of all of Square Enix's characters, Erdrick easily makes the most sense for Smash. Dragon Quest is a massive franchise in Japan, and representing it in Smash would do the game wonders in its homeland, helping solidify the game's already-unprecedented Japanese momentum. Likewise, Dragon Quest has always had very strong ties to Nintendo--it began on the NES, and every main entry since is playable on Nintendo consoles. Finally, Dragon Quest is an active, relevant and popular series, unlike some other Square properties wanted in Smash like Mario RPG or Chrono. Especially with the upcoming release of DQXI S, which will be massive in Japan and maybe even in the West if Nintendo markets it right, this just makes too much sense not to happen.
@retro_player_22 The good news is that a new Tales RPG has been confirmed to be in development, and given that the explicit purpose of Vesperia Definitive Edition was to make the Tales series fully multiplatform, I'd be surprised if the new game doesn't come to Switch.
I get it that Nintendo doesn't want to impact Switch game sales...but c'mon, there's a few games in its library that could seriously benefit from special discounts. For one thing, as @AlternateButtons said, discounting Wii U ports for MyNintendo members would be a great way to encourage Wii U owners to double dip on Switch versions. Also, there's even a few current games on Switch that could use a discount--1-2 Switch, Fire Emblem Warriors, Fast RMX, etc come to mind. At the very least could they introduce themes on Switch so we can get those through memberships? The Gold points are cool and all and they've actually saved me some money on a few purchases, but I seriously feel like Nintendo needs to, y'know, acknowledge their wildly successful console in their membership programs. Just a thought.
I know that this series is traditionally Sony-focused and that it would be a big decision to buck that trend and go to Nintendo...
...but seriously. Switch is already the dominant console in the Japanese market, and has supported big Japanese games with excellent sales on Switch, producing numbers that outpace those of other platforms such as Dragon Quest Builders 2. It simply makes no sense to leave the question of Switch support up to "fan demand" alone.
Perhaps that excuse would have worked in 2017, but with Switch completely dominating every single week's Media Create chart, there's simply no reason for it. Come on already, Bandai.
The more the merrier, really. As long as it doesn't look like Ark Survival, I will never complain about another triple A game coming to Switch, especially if it's Bethesda!
@Charlie_Girl I agree that there could (and should) be more variety in stages used in serious matches, but there's a reason why only certain stages are considered "legal". Like any fighting game, competitive Smash matches are meant to be challenges based on skill and skill alone, and it's hard to do that when there's alien dinosaurs turning the stage upside-down, wind blowing characters off the stage, race karts randomly smashing into fighters, trains colliding with the sage, or the stage literally crumbling under the fighters' feet.
Smash is wonderful because it is simultaneously a fun party game and a deep competitive fighter, so let's let the community play the game in the way that best suits their needs.
Like much of Hi-rez's work this seems highly derivative. If it's free to play I might give it a shot, but I'm not sure if it's anything I'd be willing to commit much time to.
@BulbasaurusRex Anthony C. Yu's translation is generally regarded as the definitive English version. I enjoyed it because of its apparent faithfulness to the original text and the extensive amount of explanatory footnotes.
Arthur Waley also did a popular translation of the story that is easier to read than Yu's version, but is heavily abridged and leaves out a lot of interesting details and subplots.
I'd say Yu's translation is the way to go if you want the full experience, while Waley's edition is fine if you just want to get a feel for the characters and story in general.
Simply being in the same room with Mr. Sakurai would be an incredible honor, so I don't even know how I'd react to getting him to sign my copy of Smash. Mr. Sakurai's games defined my childhood and they continue to do so to this day!
@Elvie I'd say that the comedy is quite prominent. Yes, the story is wrapped in lots of obscure Chinese and Buddhist mythology, but if you can get through all that you'll find tons of wild adventures and zany slapstick humor. The character's are also very humorous, such as the gluttonous pig-warrior Chu Pa-chieh and the intelligent-yet-cowardly monk Tripitaka. And of course, the famous Monkey King Sun Wukong is quite a trickster character, constantly playing practical jokes on his enemies, making for some very funny battles. There's a reason the characters from the book are all icons of Chinese culture--they're likable, memorable, and frankly hilarious.
(My favorite instance of the Monkey King's trickery has to be when a Demon King forcefully marries a local villager, so the Monkey King rescues that villager, disguises himself as the demon's wife when the demon king returns, then proceeds to get into a violent domestic argument with the demon, threatens him with divorce, sending the demon into a panic, before Sun Wukong fully reveals himself and defeats the enemy. That isn't even the craziest subplot in the book!)
Journey to the West is one of my favorite novels, and Rayman Origins is one of my favorite games, so this is an easy sell for me!
(And to anyone who hasn't read the original Journey to the West, don't hesitate to check it out! One of the most enjoyable and funny books I've ever read, and also quite educational regarding traditional Chinese society and religion! Ok, that's enough for my literary rambling )
Man, it's a shame to hear it doesn't seem to have lived up to expectations, as I'd been looking forward to it ever since it was showcased at one of the nindie presentations. I'd thought it would be a solid mid-sized RPG to work on in between bigger games, but unfortunately that doesn't even seem to be the case. Disappointed, to say the least.
I've put an unholy amount of time into this on PC already, and I'd imagine that the Switch version provides an even better experience. To anyone who hasn't played this yet, do yourself a favor and jump in the well, though I can't guarantee you'll ever want to come out!
@patbacknitro18 @thesilverbrick I'm quite aware of all the things stacked against something like Undertale! The only reason I think it would have any chance at all is because of Nintendo's push for indies, Undertale's popularity in Japan, and Sakurai's personal fondness for the game. There's plenty of other characters I'd love to see before something from Undertale, trust me. However, if Nintendo decides to buck the trend of focusing on Western characters for Smash, I'd love to see the reaction if the only non-Japanese character added in is Sans!
@patbacknitro18 It could also be that Sakurai wants to maximize the surprise as much as possible if Undertale ends up in Smash. After all, there aren't any Persona or Atlus spirits in Ultimate, yet Joker's coming nonetheless. I never thought Cloud would make it in Smash, nor did I think Joker had a chance, so at this point anything could be possible. Undertale is such a phenomenon it wouldn't feel too out of place in Smash--at the very least it could provide some awesome music.
To those wondering why this is on a "British" Nintendo site: Nintendo Life is the most popular Nintendo site worldwide, meaning that they're writing for a global audience. Thus it's only fair that they write an article for a specific part of their reader base (and it's an exceptionally well written piece too). After all, how do you think us 'Muricans feel after every UK-exclusive promotion on this site?
Let's hope this runs better than the Wii U version, which apparently was something of a technical mess. Let's keep the train of definitive Switch editions rolling!
1) Piranha Plant is AWESOME! The personality in his moves, taunts, and victory animations is hilarious, and his moveset is surprisingly versatile. I'm already having a blast with him, and I'm looking forward to getting better with him!
2) Is this a Smash update with actual patch notes?! Praise the fighting game gods! A little disappointed to see my man Ike's up special get nerfed, but it shouldn't be too bad in total.
I wasn't angry about this at first; after all, Square couldn't fit both games on one cart when FFX/X-2 came to Vita, so I'd expected it to happen on Switch. But now they have the gall to completely ruin the admittedly mediocre box art with that huge, ugly banner? Even Capcom had the decency to keep that thing off the cover of the Mega Man Legacy collections! When Capcom is doing physical Switch games better than you, you know you've messed up.
Every time I see this game it just looks better. Seriously, I've had almost zero interest in the Yo-kai Watch series for as long as it's been around, but I'm genuinely hyped for this entry. The graphics, the world, the gameplay, the music, and may I say again the graphics, everything just looks awesome! This game's visuals seem on par with a lot of Level 5's PS4 games like Ni No Kuni, so it's awesome to see how they've squeezed such beautiful graphics out of the comparatively-diminutive Switch. I really hope that this game gets localized soon! It looks stunning, and I can't wait to play it.
Usual mixture of Smash and Phantasy Star IV for me! I'm getting pretty decent in online as my GSP steadily rises, so perhaps my dreams of getting Ike into Elite Smash aren't completely impossible! Likewise, I'll be doing some grinding in Phantasy Star since I've reached the infamous Lashiec boss fight and I've learned that I'm apparently quite under leveled. Hopefully I can catch up soon and continue with the story, because Phantasy Star really is an enjoyable, engaging experience.
Don't let the controversial topic of the article distract you from the fact that Nintendo Life, in January 2019, has reported on a quote from all the way back at E3 2018, for no legitimate journalistic reason other than clickbait.
I've been reading this site for years, and it's a shame to see it essentially become a Nintendo-based Buzzfeed.
@jtmnm Localization actually is guaranteed for this game. Square has confirmed several times that DQXI for Switch will release in the West, though I'm not sure if it's coming this year like in Japan. Hopefully it shouldn't take too long for it to come over after the Japanese version since the localization is already done, it just depends on how much translation needs to be done for the new content.
Though I agree with you that this game is awesome, Dragon Quest as a whole is a fantastic and underrated series!
The port is looking great so far! While I'm disappointed its taken them so long since the initial announcement to actually show it off, I think they've handled the wait in the best way possible by really making this the definitive version of the game. So hyped!
Also, I noticed that none of the clips featured any background music. Maybe this is a tease for symphonic music in the game? It would go well with the 'S' moniker, anyway! That's really one of the few things I want added into the Switch version, a long with HD versions of some of the 3DS edition's exclusive content.
Regardless, I'm beyond hyped for this game, and I'm so, so happy that Squsre actually seems to be putting tons of love and care into making this the absolute best version of the game yet!
Consider the alternative: Njntendo could keep this under wraps and let Prime 4 become Nintendo's Final Fantasy 7 remake.
Plus, pretty much everyone wanted Retro to develop it in the first place, so this is really the best way they could have possibly handled the game's development troubles. Honestly, I'm more excited for the game now that I know Retro is behind the wheel!
