When Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aimé was spotted in September wearing a Metroid t-shirt alongside Geoff Keighley, rumours began to circulate that a special announcement would be made at The Game Awards. We're now days out from the annual event held in Los Angeles, so what can we expect?
According to Swedish retailer Inet, the Metroid Prime Trilogy is being released on the Nintendo Switch in February 2019. This is where it gets a bit weird, as the retailer claims the product is just a rumour in the translation but suspects the game will be announced at the Game Awards later this week. Swedish users over on ResetEra, have stated Inet is a "reliable" retailer.
It's worth mentioning the Switch ports of Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 were unveiled by Reggie at last year's Game Awards prior to Bayonetta 3. This has led to speculation the Metroid Prime Trilogy will pave the way for a Metroid Prime 4 reveal. Earlier this week, German retailer MediaMarkt also listed the Assassin's Creed Compilation for multiple platforms including the Switch.
Metroid Prime Trilogy by Retro Studios and Nintendo was originally released in 2009 and includes the first two entries from the GameCube generation and the final one from the Wii generation.
What do you make of this latest rumour? Tell us below.

I can definitely get behind this idea.
Saw this earlier. The timing of these compilations is interesting: first an Assassins's Creed compilation, then Metroid Prime Trilogy on Switch, not to mention Aonuma mentioning Skyward Sword on Switch. I'm sure they're unrelated, but the Alex Jones in me wants to guess that a Zelda compilation could be on the way as well, with Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, and a new Skyward Sword HD all in one release.
I mean it would make sense, if there’s ever a time to release them it would be right before 4 comes out.... make it happen Nintendo!!! And HD remasters pls (a guy can dream right?)
I definitely would. Just make motion controls optional.
Please... for the love of God... PLEASE!!!
I know Reggie wearing the Metroid pin means nothing, but I can still see this being revealed as well as the first gameplay for Prime 4 at TGA.
I have the Trilogy via the Wii U eShop, but this would be an easy double dip.
I want this I hope it's true. The original trilogy on Wii was great, to have an HD of all three before Metroid Prime 4 would be super sweet.
i am spiritually aroused
I would love if this was a announcement. It makes Perfect sense to release the others in the series before 4 comes out...seriously, I really hope this is true!!!
Nothing to look at here folks. Just an already disproven rumor (the retailer thought it was likely to be shown off at the Game Awards and having heard nothing from Nintendo).
is a good chance of it be true.
While I don't think this rumour means anything, it would make sense to bring the first three to the Switch before releasing 4. The games should also play really well on the Switch. As good as the Wii's pointer controls were, two sticks with gyro aiming should be better.
@Baker1000 Yes totally agree. Could never get into this game as I just don't like motion controls no matter how well developed...
Cool. Boring worlds on a 3rd system.
@Baker1000 Definitely. I tried to play one on Wii U, just couldn't do it. Knowing Nintendo though, there will be no option.
Federation Force or no buy from me!!!!
If true, these would be great. Fans have been wanting it. After playing the entire Trilogy on my Wii U last year, these NEED to see daylight again.
@Majora101 bruh, skyward sword rumour is busted
Eh, I still say they’ll show the first Smash DLC pass character.
Maybe both, haha
They put it on switch, I buy.
I was legit just thinking of buying it on my Wii U. Now I'm gonna wait. Because if it does come to the Switch, I'd much rather have that version for the added portability.
I actually still have the Wii Steelcase edition of this one. It would definitely need to be an HD remake with traditional controls for me to double dip.
If this is their big announcement for The Game Awards, I'm practically going to be awake all night...
It's always some European retailer. Big if true, though.
I don't want to get hyped for this because I don't want to be disappointed on Thursday, but they clearly saw how last year's one-two punch of revealing Bayonetta 1+2 for Switch followed by the announcement of Bayo 3 was so positively received, and I think it's likely they'll try to do something similar this year. This would be amazing. I'd love to finally play a real Metroid game on my favorite system.
Not to mention that The Last Story 2 leaked on a German retailer website; could that be coming too? This year's awards could be an incredible night.
Nintendo: We have no plans at the moment
I realllllly hope it's true. Some thing big is coming Thursday and I can't wait!
I really hope this is true, but I looked at the listing myself from the retailer and I have my doubts that it's true. What would be the point of showing off all the original GameCube and Wii box arts, and then in theory wouldn't this probably be HD? (or at least I'd hope it'd be).
Ideally something gets announced, Nintendo keeps lightly teasing it and it would make the most sense to prep everyone for Metroid Prime 4 by re-releasing the trilogy, this could also allow them to safely put Prime 4 in 2020 to satisfy everyone for now.
Metroid serie will be well receive on Switch I'm pretty sure. New players will jump on it. That's what this serie needs.
@Mrtoad I imagined officer barbrady saying that in his voice.
I'd most definitely love for it to happen since Prime 4 is on the horizon
Followed by a remaster set of Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, and probably a Mario Galaxy 1+2 and Sunshine package?
I care as much as I cared about the Bayonetta collection,... Zero.
Dolphin has been able to run the entire Trilogy for years, and not even tried to play them again.
I have a Metroid 4 pre-order - so some news please! (I already had a Wii 🙄)
It reads to me that they openly admit this is a rumor from them with no outside sources or leaks to back it up - meaning they originated the rumor and published the rumor and then said it was a rumor.
I do think this would make a LOT of sense and I would love to see it happen, I also think rumors like these - paricularly unfounded, out of the blue ones like this one - only set people up for unwarranted disappointment.
A bit off topic but if I recall correctly the Metroid Prime games are pretty difficult? If so, I hope they could add something in a new release to adjust the difficulty.
Day 1 buy if true
I’m going to buy this either way but it’s going to make me that much more excited if they allow for optional motion controls. I owned this trilogy 3 times and I’m ready for a 4th. Hoping this is true!
I don't know if I believe that. I wonder what a Swedish retailer knows that one of any other country don't.🤔
If I was a retailer, I’d stir a pot just for fun. A remastered Metroid Prime Trilogy would be welcome. I’d then own it on Wii with the limited edition case and concept artwork, on Wii U, and Switch. Great games get rewarded. I’d revisit a remastered Skyward Sword as well. I’d also be cool with golden Triforce joycons and motion controls again on all of it. I didn’t understand how people were troubled by it. I got so comfortable and used to Skyward Sword’s controls that I couldn’t imagine going back (at the time.)
@Majora101 just by mentioning Alex Jones you’ve turned the frogs gay!
@aznable I am completely emotionally, physically, intellectually and financially aroused.
@Don They aren’t difficult, and already have options in the Prime trilogy.
Well.......there seems to be some rumblings among the interwebs that the trilogy on Switch is going to happen......
@Don don’t let your lack of skill tarnish a great game and its legacy... especially a great series like Metroid. 🙄
Regular control options please. I'd rather not buy an extra set of joycons since I have one of the left joycons that malfunctions more than 5 feet away from the unit.
YES!!!!!
please let them take away the motion controls of MP3
If it's not a true HD remake, they can keep it!
Reselling the same exact game again with no graphical improvements is ridiculous!
@Agramonte If Nintendo has the sense to do an HD remake, I'll care.
If not, I'm with you. Just play it on the Dolphin.
I will buy these games a third time, especially to be able to play them in 1080p. I hope they give the option to use a GCN controller (and skip a bunch of dumb "Wii moments" that Corruption had), or use motion controls with the Joycons and use the extra buttons to make switching visors and weapons easier (i.e. D-Pad changes weapon, ZL+D-Pad or right stick switches visors.)
I don't want to get my hopes up, but if this does happen, day 1! No hesitation.
This retailer listing is probably BS, but the game itself is real.
Will wait and see at the VGA
Would also give us insight as to what Nintendo might have planned for 4. Motion controls with Joycons, regular controls, both for convenience?
Either way, it'll be nice to see the games get a nice HD polish (It won't be an absolute remake.).
And if 2019 is the start of HD Wii ports (This, Skyward Sword possibly, etc.), Xenoblade 1 HD pls? :3
The listing actually said “this is a rumor, we think it’s coming”
And people are giving weight to this???
Of course I have these on Dolphin, but no, that’s not even remotely close to being even infinitesimally good enough. I even have on GPD Win 2 handheld, though the 3rd can’t be played well because of the way motion is mapped to the right analog,
I want proper HD, on an actual console. With proper dual analog support. With gyro aiming. With full hybrid functionality. THAT is what I want. And I am willing to pay any price in silver, gold or United States currency (and perhaps even internal organs, depending) in order to obtain it. That’s my official offer to Nintendo. Per game.
Hope they'll do collector's edition for some reason. Like with Bayonetta, I mean.
@templag I would mess with you for using the non-word "bruh", but I see you are from Indonesia and otherwise type great English, (good for you!) so I'll let it slide.
Skyward Sword on Switch is hardly a rumor, as it was teased by Aonuma himself (spoiler alert: he probably wouldn't have said it at all if they do not plan on doing it). Nintendo are very precise in how and when they market their products, specifically in that they with some exceptions will almost always focus their resources on titles that are to be released "soon", which is usually a window of about half a year. The official statement that they currently "have no plans" is expected and means very little. Diablo III was actively denied as being in development for Switch as well, until it was announced with a 2018 release date to boot. Give it time!
amazing!!! I have never played those games so I am very happy!
This would be both excellent news and a very sensible and logical thing to do
@KayFiOS the motion controls in corruption were so low-energy I don’t know why anyone complains about them.
Morph ball jump was a good QOL feature
@WaffleKnight what are they going to say?
“Well looks like you got us. Surprise.”
i hope for Xenoblade Chronicles X and Skyward Sword as well!
Would be great, but I don’t believe there has been a situation in recent Nintendo history where a first party game is re-released for more than one home console. First party games from previous consoles are very welcome.
@DaedricSoul You should consider the amazing IR controls of the Wii (U) versions (just remember to set sensitivity to max). You're not going to see those on the Switch.
@ilikeike I hope Last Story 2 is coming. Nintendo needs to finance more games like that from external studios.
If Nintendo would ever design a VR add-on, this is what I would like to play.
@LUIGITORNADO It's not the amount of energy required, but how much they slow the player down just for the sake of showing off what motion controls can allow a player to do that got on my nerves. Yanking stuff with the Grapple Beam and aiming to shoot was cool, but stopping to turn a lock, punch a number in a keypad, and line two images together, it's like "Okay, Nintendo. I get it. Motion controls are a thing now. Can I get back to the game please?" It's not the main reason why I never finished it (that was more the emphasis on cinematics instead of atmosphere) but it was a factor.
@Liam_Doolan You might want to update this article. When translated, part of the product description reads "This product is only a rumour but we think it will likely be revealed at the game awards with release early 2019 (feb?)”
I hope it's true, because you can actually put money on it, right now. The fact that they are selling something based on a rumor is pretty shady.
Inet is actually a pretty good retailer for computer and gaming related stuff here in Sweden, but I would take this with a tiny grain of salt. Inet is a smaller retailer, with only a handful of stores in the larger cities of Sweden + an online store.
They write ”produkten är endast ett rykte”/”the product is only a rumour” and ”grafiken är förmodligen uppdaterad till Switch”/”the graphics are probably updated for the Switch”.
@Matthew010 Did you actually read the article?
Thanks for the local insight @Quarth
@goggles789 Shady yes, but not uncommon.
@Liam_Doolan I read it quite quickly.
@Matthew010 All good.
I wish. But I'll try to keep my hope at a reasonable level
@Spectra MP3 had awesome controls; tf you on about?
I think this is true only IF MP4 isn't happening in 2019.
@Tyranexx does the Wii U version still have that requirement in Prime 3 to swap Friend Tickets? I’m assuming it’s a straight ROM dump of the Wii version so expect it’s a yes, just curious
@templag,
Nintendo are very good at saying things do not exist, when in reality they just do not want to announce them yet.
The 3DS XL was a very good example of this,at E3 Iwata was asked about a possible new model 3DS coming out,he said there were no plans, then a few days later Nintendo have the director of Europe stood on a store room with tonnes of boxed 3DS XL consoles packed and ready to ship.
What is that book that claims wishing something into existence can actually bring it about? I mean I think it depends on Metroid Prime 4 itself. Since we know nothing about that one, everyone already assuming there is a trilogy arriving seems like a huge leap. I see the logic of releasing the trilogy, but I also see the logic of Nintendo wanting to push the reset button and not releasing the trilogy prior to 4. Still excited for the game awards anyway.
It's a logical game to release ahead of the 4th instalment, so it rings true in that respect. It also potentially explains why Retro Studios have been taking so long to announce/release whatever they've been working on all this time since DK Tropical Freeze on the Wii U - perhaps they had to move some development resource to shoehorn in this remake (assuming its them doing the remake, of course). So that rings true too. The timing of the announcement fits when you look at Bayonetta. And the timing of the release looks sensible too, off the back of New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe and ahead of whenever Yoshi and Fire Emblem get confirmed for Q2. So yea, more than a good chance that this is true.
Won’t make a difference to me either way. Currently playing through the trilogy for the first time on the Wii U. Loved the first one but man, Echoes is feeling like a chore to get through.
@CptBiasAran echoes is my fav out of the Trilogy. Spent hours playing it.
Pretty good news if thw rumours are true, but you know, rumours being rumours and all.
As someone previously mentioned, an HD version of Xenoblade Chronicles would be amazing!
Very plausible, especially since almost nothing has been announced for release on Switch in the first quarter of 2019, at least where Nintendo's own offerings are concerned, and it would make no sense to release the collection mid-year, presumably just a few months shy of Metroid Prime 4.
I can only assume that it will be (more or less) a direct Wii port, which is fine, as it looked great then, and it will look even better even if they merely give the resolution a bump.
It makes sense and would be worth having a Switch for imo ... It should happen! If they stopped porting WiiU games nobody wanted (Mario Bros u, captain toad, dktf) they could of remastered this masterpiece... Metroid Prime 4 is coming and Metroid needs more presence on Switch... A lil bit of new textures, 1080p and better frame rate is all it needs
Good, this gives me the opportunity to finally beat Metriod Prime 2 Echoes, the only one in this series that I never beat. I played it back in 2004, but gave up when Alpha Blogg (the underwater boss) was giving me issues.
@Liam_Doolan I’ve bought some Switch games from them before, they sometimes have better prices than the competition. Gamestop on the other hand sucks!
I hope this rumour based preorder thing is true. It’s easy that it backfires if it’s not.
@KayFiOS it’s such a non issue that I think I’ll chalk it up as a nitpick.
The game is an FPA. It’s not a first person shooter on a track. An extra 10 seconds to punch some buttons is technically no different than moving the Wii mote to shoot some baddies. It’s virtually the same input.
Please be true!
The retailer himself stated that the listing was purely based on speculation and that no confirmation was behind it.
So yes, we all agree it makes perfect sense for Nintendo to do this – but that doesn't mean they will, and we have zero evidence it is going to happen.
Nintendo does not have the greatest history of understanding what its audiences hopes for – especially regarding the more sci-fi IPs of Metroid, Star Fox and F-Zero.
Another repackaged rehash. Not much for Nintendo loyalists who played these games on prior platforms in this news.
I might check it out. I haven't played any other Metroid game besides a few minutes of super and beatly any of the terrible nes one.
I wouldn't mind this in HD. Same with a LoZ trilogy, I think it would be good filler for the younger/newer Nintendo fans as well.
That being said, I'm keeping my expectations in line with what Nintendo themselves announce. On that note, I hope the VGA's give me something to chew on, until the first 2019 direct hits.
@LUIGITORNADO I know it's an FPA. You know what else is an FPA? The first two Metroid Prime games. Did those stop your progress to do some mundane task that didn't involve exploring the environment? If they did, it wasn't nearly as frequent as Corruption. And unlike those mundane tasks, shooting enemies is often imperative to prevent the Game Over screen from appearing. Not only that, but killing things is a lot more fun than twisting a damn dial.
@KayFiOS Mundane tasks such as bringing up the scan visor to scan a certain switch to activate a whathoozit.
Sounds to me your just biased over simple input controls with motion.
I would buy it (if true) but the only prime game I enjoyed was 2.
@gaga64: IIRC Yes, Friend Tickets are still in.
@LUIGITORNADO I never said that the motion controls were bad in Metroid Prime 3, in fact if you actually bothered to read my posts you would have seen that I complimented the ability to aim and shoot and yank things with the grapple beam. And yeah, I think bouncing with the Spring ball is awesome too, and it's one of my favorite additions to Metroid Prime 1 and 2, and it's little QOL additions like that that are the reason I prefer the Wii version of those games to the GameCube version, so don't go accusing me of having some non-existent bias towards simple inputs. The issue is not the motion controls, it is how they are used in stupid gimmicky ways just to show off what the Wii can let you do.
Look at how much hate Diddy Kong Racing DS gets for how it overplays the Touch Screen in dumb and gimmicky ways. Sure, the Touch Screen is used in clever ways, like drawing your own courses, but then it's used in stupid ways, like sliding the stylus over your wheels/propeller rapidly just to get the boost start. Same applies here.
And sure, Prime 1&2 has you scan the environment, but so does 3, so I don't see your point with that comment, either. If anything, that just makes it more annoying that the game tasks you with even more mundane tasks on top of that.
Didn't we already get this on Wii U?
im not crying, your crying...
its just so glorious... T-T
I'm throwing my money at the screen, but it doesn't seem to be working.
I know it's just a rumor, but I would LOVE for this to be true!
@Petriebird the thing is I don't mind motion controls. I actually liked the Wii ports and MP3 for their motion controls. BUT I don't think the "motion plus" controls are right for this game. They constantly need resetting to the center of the screen. The pointer based controls that the Wii used in the early days were much better suited, because they're more accurate and won't need resetting every 30 seconds. And of course some people might prefer the motion controls, but having the option of using joysticks is better than forcing people to use a control system they don't like, spoiling the game for them. Choice is never a bad thing.
@invictus4000
Yes you five that bought the wiiu...
@invictus4000
We did, but if I remember right, that was just a port. Many suspect this is a HD remaster in the works.
Please let this be true. I never played any Prime game, so this is perfect for someone like me.
@raven89 That's six if you include me
It would be cool to have the option to use that trusty Gamecube adapter and have original Gamecube controls.
Am not sure how well motion controls would work with the Joy Cons anyway, they're not the same as the trusty Wii remote.
I've never played the Trilogy so this would be a must for me. As I have heard of the best of things about it. And also might get me more interested in the series.
@Majora101 Having those games handheld would be flippin’ amazing
I would die if this were true but I have the feeling they are saving anything Metroid for when the Switch lifespan is in it's last year.
I still have my copy but if this were real it would be a must buy. I played it not too long ago and visually, even MP1 still holds up.
