Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be receiving a day-one update, director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed.
We're only eight days away from the launch of the mega Nintendo character fightathon, and on that magical day, you'll want to make sure your game is updated and ready to go. If you'll be getting a copy digitally from the Switch eShop, you should be fine, but anyone treating themselves to a physical version might want to update their copy before turning it on for the first time.
The news comes from a recent Famitsu column by Sakurai himself; we don't know if there are more changes involved under the hood, but Sakurai notes that the patch will at least ensure any saved replays work as intended.
“We will distribute our first update on launch day. Players who purchased the digital version don’t need to worry, but players who purchased the physical version should apply this day-one patch before you play. This will also prevent your replays from going off-track. By the way, if you save your replays as videos, you can keep them forever, but note that they take up a lot of space!”
We can already imagine the plethora of saved replays about to be shared online via social media, so make sure to be ready to join in the fun. Further details about this patch, such as the required space to download it to your system, haven't been revealed.
Have you opted for a physical copy? Or are you a fan of buying digitally? Let us know below.

The day-one update is cool, but that lead image reminds me of how awesome Incineroar looks. Like hot dang, his model is fantastic. Those fur textures looks great and I love all the personality the devs injected into his moveset. I was actively against Incineroar being in the game, but now that I've seen him in action I'm completely sold.
Only 8 days now!
The ability to permanently save your favorite replays is golden and will make the feature far more useful here than it was in Smash 4 initially.
8 f#%&ing days !!
I restrain myself for plugging my Wii U back on my tv just to get my smash brose dose. What a junky I am.
@Klunk23 Agreed, the feature is great
@smashboy2000 I’ve kept my Wii U hooked up, played a little every night this week. And I’ve got my 2DS in my briefcase at all times 😂
Day-one updates are pretty much the norm these days, especially for online games. As long as it doesn't take very long to download. We're getting this for the kid for Xmas. Really, it's "for the kid." Not for me. Not at all.
@ilikeike I'm pretty hyped for Incineroar too. I'm probably gonna main him, especially since he might count as Smash's first grappler character.
Eh, no biggie.
I'm just excited that this game is just over a week away!
Man we are geeked up about smash. Can't wait to get my ass kicked by my kids lol. Anyone know when the review embargo is up?
Hopefully the patch size isn't too large.
That's okay I'll just go make a cup of tea while the game updates. <3
More old news.
So, technically speaking, that means the Physical has an "exclusive" update!
Once this game is out, my Wii U is gone, baby! No more clutter!
Unfortunately for me, I have to wait even longer than you guys because I want to experience this game for the first time with my brother, and we won't be able to meet up and play till like the 21st.
@Cognitron I also went digital this time. I get tired of swapping carts out. I often wish I had gotten Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Odyssey, and BOTW digitally.
@NintendoFan4Lyf The problem you eventually may run into if you try to save space by getting physical copies is that you may end up underutilizing your storage. I got a 400 GB card, and I ain't being shy about using it. Maybe you have less storage, but it's a balance you just sort of have to work out...I find more and more though that I don't really miss the boxes so much, and not having to swap games out is a big plus. Wish so many of my PS4 games weren't physical because there's no storage advantage on that platform either way.
Dec 7th is right around the corner!! November flew by, hopefully this last week passes by quick as well.
just waiting for that unlock.....
My friends and I are throwing a farewell Smash Bros 4 party and the last time we use the Wii U.
We have been playing Smash 4 every week or two for the past few months.... We are all a little stocked you would say.
@Giygas_95 dang dude, but you can do it! Same with my brother but with zombies (COD) had to wait 2 years until we saw each other again cause I suck at those games and don't like playing alone .
@Ryu_Niiyama Just once I'd like to see a big game like this unlock early by accident, but it hasn't happened yet...
@Ttimer5 Ugh, I remember my brother dragging me into CoD zombies many times. I eventually got very tired of it. Two years is a long time to go without seeing family though.
I've got two pro controllers coming in today though for me and my brother to use when the time comes. Beats trying to use joycons!
My countdown timer reads 7 days 11 hours 14 minutes...
8 days.
8 flipping days.
It still feels like the teaser came out yesterday... Time really does fly! I can't wait until it comes out. Dodging leaks right now is EXTREMLY difficult.
@Giygas_95 no intern wants to get fired that badly...
I'm getting a physical copy of the game so my hubby and I can share between our Switches. That said, one of us may get a digital copy down the road if we become totally addicted. We're casual Smash Bros players and nowhere near "pro" levels like some of our friends. Plus I pre-ordered this way back during the E3 sale for a cheaper price!
@Rafke
Will be a glittering prize awaiting you, though, after you ace your exams! Go get 'em!
Probably a big flashing screen DON'T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR NINTENDO ONLINE TO PLAY ONLINE.
I wonder how many updates there will be ready to install Christmas morning when a lot of kids open this? 3? 5? 8?
"but note that they take up a lot of space!”
So everybody gets to save 1 before needing an SD card.
We're celebrating Christmas morning on the 22nd before traveling for the holidays so hopefully their servers aren't getting slammed then.
@Ryu_Niiyama True, haha.
Hopefully Nintendo servers won’t grind to a halt when I open this Xmas day!
@Yosher Classic and classy 😉
Ta for the usual useful info Nintendolife!
Very excited, everything about this Smash seems right for me and then some.
But people can still play the game only off the cart? I guess that day one is for the online part so the games can have the same version.
It's the anti-racism patch right?
If only it could be rolled out in real life too.
@Cognitron Well, I buy games on carts to save space on my SD card. I don't want to swap cards or uninstall games, so I buy games digitally only if they don't take up too much space.
Not too worry about the patch, it's basically for the online play session of the game. For those playing offline tournament anyways this is not a big deal.
Then they can consider the game not purchased on release then.
'They can call me when the physical prints come in a reasonable complete state.
@thesewoodenideas Humanity used human decency and common courtesy! It wasn't very effective. Gonna need some rare candies for this endeavor.
oMg ThIs Is ThE dEaTh Of MoDeRn GaMiNg!!!
@HobbitGamer Same, but it just makes me want Ultimate more! Is it just me or does Smash 4 look really low resolution? Ultimate looks more current gen to me. Not to mention I want to play as the new fighters so bad!
Wow tbh that is a lame excuse people go digital because they are lazy to SWITCH carts....... (like some people here in the comments)........the world is getting even more lazy by the day.....(of course not everywhere).
@IceEarthGuard I think you’re confusing ‘laziness’ with ‘convenience’. I’m getting it physical because I’ve gotten all other Smash physical. But if I want to play another physical game for a bit, I’d get up and walk across the living room, open the glass cabinet where my dock is, open the drawer where my carts are, and swap.
If it were digital, it’s two button presses. That’s hella convenient, especially when I’ve just gotten my 18 lb huge cat on my lap to stop moving 😂
@HobbitGamer Hmm.... still that is like someone saying fast food is convenient......... but really most of the food in fast foods are unhealthy and not proper food at all and people are indeed lazy because they don't want to make homemade food.
To me convenient and lazy could crashed together in certain situations.
Like for me my physical switch games is just out in the open and is near the switch. And I don't mind "wasting" 5-15 seconds to switch my game.
I'm worried that my physical smash is going to be late. Last year all of my packages were late around this time of year (between Thanksgiving and Christmas). Had to wait a week or so after release for Xenoblade 2 to arrive. My packages so far this second half of November have been late so it's not looking good.
Part of me wishes I had gone digital, but I'm a sucker for special editions lol.
I think my controller will drain the battery dry from all the smashing... lol
@nocdaes
It could means that the standard cartridge size was too small and the cost to pay for bigger cartridge was not possible for Nintendo...
That's why I've been gradually moving from only physical to basically only digital. Buying a cartridge today doesn't guarantee you'll have the full game in the future, so what's the use? Virtually every game these days gets day one or month one updates, so...
Hmmm remember the days when people here uses day one patches against other games from other platforms
which only means you'll prolly be DL more than half your game... IOW you just had (a portion of) the cost of the media passed on to you... AGAIN. = hidden additional increase in game cost on top of the sticker price. this practice stinks IMO
Hopefully this isn't a "download the rest of the game" update.
I’m kinda Sad that people are completely giving up their Wii Us going by this comment section. I proudly own the Wii U. It’s soo much more than just a Smash Machine. Soo many wonderful exclusives that will remain only on the Wii U and I think it’s a better system in terms of features and the library as a whole. Plus Free Online.
@IceEarthGuard
I live in the middle of nowhere, the closest game store is like 10 miles away, so it's definitely more convenient for me to buy digital.
@Cognitron you will also have a ton of storage space taken up from not having a physical copy.
I will never buy into the whole digital over physical as it gives the companies control over your purchases. The ability today we're shutting the servers down and closing the game is bs. That and the resell and nostalgic value of a physical will always male it better.
@Super8-BitBen I still at my WiiU religiously along with my switch as well. You are correct, there are so many great titles and the WiiU is still a fantastic gaming console.
AHHHHHHHHHHH 8 more days, 7 days in a couple of hours am buying physical but only because i'm getting the controller bundle. I can't wait.
@TheGhostWhoWalks Wow Sligeach, you really do bring nothing but misery to this site. You need to get out more.
Oh good, I'll be able to keep my replays instead of having them not work after every update like smash 4. Wooop
@Gravitron Yeah I suppose that makes sense. (well unless you can order physical games online heheh).
@jtmnm Your profile picture is amazing.
@RevampedSpider
Inflated enough to not want balance updates for a game I will be playing offline. Though if I keep my system connected in general, I know Nintendo will insist I install them, regardless of whether I play online or not.
Not a fan of smash but may buy it pre-owned on eBay along the way. Give me some mk8 dlc though please Nintendo!
@RevampedSpider
Except Nintendo won't let me not do that.
At least that was the case with all their games on Wii U with online functionality. If the system knew the game had an update, you couldn't even turn on the game without installing it.
I will avoid purchasing this game on day one, so I can hear if the situation is the same this time around.
@RevampedSpider Glad they could fit it all! Some publishers have been really cheap with games under 16GB and make you download half the game.
@RevampedSpider
>You do know that you can play the game on Switch without the update, right?
As we have gone over two times already, I have no incentive for believing this.
@RevampedSpider
I'm quite comfortable with being stubborn AND playing video games, thank you.
@RevampedSpider I hope your correct! I’m also a little worried. I do all physical for Nintendo made games and all digital for everything else. At first I was all physical then realize for a couple games I was only buying a download code like a PS4 game and what’s the point of that. Collecting these little physical games are awesome I own every Nintendo made game for the switch except for 3. Also have 256 card filled just ordered the 400gig 😆
