Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be receiving a day-one update, director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed.

We're only eight days away from the launch of the mega Nintendo character fightathon, and on that magical day, you'll want to make sure your game is updated and ready to go. If you'll be getting a copy digitally from the Switch eShop, you should be fine, but anyone treating themselves to a physical version might want to update their copy before turning it on for the first time.

The news comes from a recent Famitsu column by Sakurai himself; we don't know if there are more changes involved under the hood, but Sakurai notes that the patch will at least ensure any saved replays work as intended.

“We will distribute our first update on launch day. Players who purchased the digital version don’t need to worry, but players who purchased the physical version should apply this day-one patch before you play. This will also prevent your replays from going off-track. By the way, if you save your replays as videos, you can keep them forever, but note that they take up a lot of space!”

We can already imagine the plethora of saved replays about to be shared online via social media, so make sure to be ready to join in the fun. Further details about this patch, such as the required space to download it to your system, haven't been revealed.
