@AshFoxX The Switch version has already been confirmed for the West multiple times for quite a while now, thankfully; however, we don't yet know if it will release in 2019 like the Japanese version. I really hope we get some news on that sooner rather than later--perhaps in the January direct? I can't imagine there should be too much of a delay in localization since most of the game is already translated anyway.
I definitely understand your frustrations though. Square's radio silence and near-dismissal of the Switch version over the past few years has been infuriating, to say the least. At the very least I'm glad that they've taken this time to create what could be the most content-complete version of the game yet. Let's hope that the January stream reveals actual gameplay and some more Switch-exclusive content.
@AshFoxX While no actual gameplay was shown, they actually revealed a ton of info at the event that NL neglected to report in the article for some reason. I can't list it all here, but I wrote a big post earlier on in the comment section that summarized most of the information I've picked up about the game if you'd care to check that out. In short, it seems like Square really is giving Switch the 'special' treatment with tons of exclusive and unique content!
@Blitzenexx Man, I loved Dragon Quest V! It's the game that sold me on DQ. I loved the marriage and family choices in the game, which is why I'm happy they're bringing back marriage decisions in DQXI S. I've been tempted by DQXI on Steam a few times before, but I've been holding out for the Switch version since it's my preferred console to play these massive RPG's. The more I look at the Switch screenshots the more I think I might prefer the Switch version, at least in some areas. However, the true test will come when we actually see gameplay!
@kobashi100 That makes sense to me. It only ran at 900p on PS4, so I'd imagine it'd be lower than that for Switch. Then again they really emphasized at the show that the game has been entirely remade to suit the Switch's hardware, so maybe they really can pull off a technical marvel and make it run even better on Switch.
@Blitzenexx Lol thanks! I guess I'm just way more passionate about this game than the author of this article is, I've been scourging the internet for info about it ever since the trailer dropped. Really, I've been hyped for this game ever since it was announced for the NX!
I really hope it comes west sooner rather than later, too. It shouldn't be too long since it's mostly translated already, but I guess it all depends on the amount of new content in the game that needs to be localized.
Also here's a link to some comparison screenshots. https://nintendoeverything.com/dragon-quest-xi-s-switch-vs-ps4-comparison-screenshots/ There's definitely a difference as the PS4 version has higher resolution as well as better lighting and textures, but the Switch version still looks fantastic on its own. Of course, the gameplay will be the real test, but so far things are looking really good for Switch.
Square Enix actually announced a lot about the Switch version of the game at Jump Festa, but you wouldn't know that from this article
-They confirmed that DQXI S has been built from the ground up for Switch. It uses Unreal Engine 4 like the PS4 version, but it's completely rebuilt and tailored specifically towards its platform just like the PS4 and 3DS releases were.
-You can now marry any of your female party members or live with your male party members.
-New Japanese voice acting for 200+ characters will likely lead to dual audio for the Western release.
-They've made a "Dragon Quest XI S Streaming Channel" which will provide updates on the game on a regular basis until release.
-There will be a big stream for the game with the director, producer, and series creator sometime in January. This will likely give us our first look at direct gameplay. This is separate from the aforementioned 'surprise'.
-They've teased lots more exclusive content for the Switch version, aside from the voice acting.
Graphics may be a bit of a downgrade as can be seen in the trailer, but it looks like Switch really will get the definitive version of the game in terms of content and functionality! Really hyped for this, hopefully it releases worldwide not long after the Japanese release.
And it absolutely deserves every one of those sales. It's one of the most uncompromisingly brilliant games I've ever played, among those rare games where everything just feels right. Every part of it, from the simple yet groundbreaking gameplay mechanics, to the critical message of its perfectly-told story, is pure perfection to me. Can't wait to torture myself with those new farewell levels!
I expected it to sell super well--it is the biggest Nintendo game of the year, after all--but I wasn't expecting anything as insane as it being the fastest/best-selling Switch game in basically every region. It really is the ultimate Smash game!
That's really the beauty of Smash. Whereas other fighting games essentially require you to memorize complex combos and movesets for every character, Smash is open to everyone regardless of their skill level and lets anyone play how they want. Looking for a fun, casual fight? Grab some friends, turn on time match, leave items and stage hazards on, and have a blast. Want something more competitive? One on one, items off, final destination or battlefield is the way to go. There's something for everyone in Sakurai's magnum opus!
Please fix online, please, I'm begging you. When I finally cave and purchase a Switch Online subscription, I want to know that the one game I will consistently play online will actually have good online and matchmaking.
On the bright side of things, at least this isn't an indication of the Switch's upper limits. Switch is certainly capable of running something this graphically intense as games like Warframe and Doom have shown. This is just an issue of lazy optimization and development, just like everything else with this game.
I wasn't interested in this until I saw some screenshots, and hot dang this is a pretty game. I don't think it can hold a candle to Gris, but it's still very aesthetically pleasing in its own right.
@welshland No, Suda51 is holding a special livestream about Travis Strikes again next week on the 20th. He says that it will be shown in both English and Japanese and will showcase a "huge announcement" about the game.
I've been equally intrigued and perplexed by this game ever since the gameplay was revealed. I hope that the broadcast next week showcases something to truly sell me on it.
This looks pretty fun. However the art style seems a bit generic to me, especially after the distinctly colorful art of the devs' previous work on Runbow. It reminds me of all those flash platformers I used to play on Newgrounds back in the day, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.
I know it's a short game, but if the experience is really as impactful as the review suggests then I think it's well worth the price of admission in spite of the length. It's not every day a game this beautiful comes along.
If this entails an overhaul of the eShop then I'm down for that. Its current design is a bit of a mess for trying to find anything that isn't trending, featured, or on sale.
However, eShop is a great, distinctive name. It has personality. It's individual. It's memorable. "Nintendo Switch Online Shop" is a boring, forgettable name. It sounds so generic and impersonal. How is the average consumer going to remember such a soulless name for an online storefront when other consoles have exciting names like Xbox Live and Playstation Network? Also this name implies a deeper connection with the Nintendo Switch Online service, which isn't really a good thing.
I guess I'm just worried that Nintendo is going to pull a very Nintendo move here, and history has shown us that that's not always a good thing.
@LinkAtWild I believe that they've already confirmed that it's a roughly three-hour-long game. It's more focused on the artistic and emotional experience than length or challenge, I think.
Most likely it will just be overviews of each of the main game worlds and gameplay styles. Which is fine, since we've only seen one of the seven modes, and it hasn't exactly won everyone over. Whenever Suda talks about the other modes they sound amazing, so hopefully we get a good look at them. Also, apparently they brought back Travis's original voice actor, so perhaps they'll showcase his work in the new game. The 'big announcement' will probably be a full reveal of the DLC packs.
In other words--an HD port of NMH 1 or 2, announcement of a true NMH 3, or Travis in Smash probably ain't happening, folks.
It feels like it's been ages since I've read a positive story about our police force. It seems like they only get into the news when they've killed someone or been killed. It's a pleasure to see some officers get the spotlight for being genuinely good people.
@Gravitron I'm in the same boat as you actually, I was an N64 kid growing up so Crash Bandicoot characters aren't very important to me personally. However I'm still aware that CTR is a big game for Switch and I'm happy for its fans. It's a good sign when Switch gets multiplatform releases from big publishers like Activision.
@Gravitron People absolutely love CTR and it's one of the most iconic games of its generation. I'd say that it's huge for it to come to Switch, especially day-and-date with other platforms.
I think everyone would have loved to have it on Switch. But like Reggie said, with the majority of AAA games taking years of intensive development to create for just the initial target platforms long before the Switch was even announced, it's simply unrealistic to expect all third parties to include Switch from the start.
That said, as the Game Awards showed us this year, that's starting to change. We're getting huge multiplats next year like Mortal Kombat 11, Crash Team Racing, Doom Eternal, Trials Rising, and likely the usual bevy of annual sports games. I believe that the Switch's future looks bright, both in first parties and third parties.
@Moroboshi876 I've heard Sega argue that way before, but then I have to ask why Sonic 3 and Knuckles was perfectly playable on the Sonic collections on DS and Gamecube. I know its tricky to emulate, but they've done it before multiple times already on less powerful hardware. It can't be so hard to do it again.
A delay is always disappointing, but it sounds like they're making some really worthwhile changes that improve the game. As much fun as "retro challenge" can be, it can also be incredibly frustrating, and I'm glad that they're taking the time to make the game more enjoyable for all. It would be a shame for this game to essentially become as unpleasant as Super Ghosts 'n' Goblins all for the sake of such "retro challenge".
Free games are never a bad thing. I wish Sega took this approach with the Sega Genesis Classics collection to add missing games like Sonic 3 and Knuckles or the Thunder Force games.
Even though I find this series personally repulsive (the gratuitous gore and violence is a bit too much for me), it's awesome to see such a huge third-party game on Switch. I'll be interested to see how the Switch version handles the graphics as well, since this seems to be a very graphically intense game--and just plain graphic, too.
Glad to see that Nintendo is finally getting with the times with their online content policies...now if they could give their own online service the same treatment, that would be much appreciated!
I'm near certain that these trademarks mean nothing (as always) and that this is simply a clickbait article, which is all too common on the site nowadays.
I really never did see this coming! Man, this is awesome. Surprise is probably my favorite part of getting new Smash characters. The potential for a creative moveset is insane, I can't wait to see what Sakurai can do with the character.
Also, does this hint towards a Persona 5 Swotch port?!? I really hope that that happens, I'd love to play that game portably.
This is awesome! Like I said in another comment, between incredible first party games and the best third party support on decades, I think 2019 will be the greatest year for Switch yet!

This looks really cool. Between this, Disgaea, Valkyria, Langrisser, and Fire Emblem, I think that Switch is building quite the library of SRPG's.
