I literally yelled, "YESSSSSSS!!!" out loud when I saw Monster Hunter Stories go across the screen, lol! This was easily the highlight of the Direct presentation for me, mostly because I felt the game had a lower chance of being localized outside of Japan. I've tried MH3U, 4U, and Generations and I simply can't enjoy it with the 3DS/handheld controls, which are too cramped and generally uncomfortable for me. I believe I'd enjoy the main series a lot more with controls on a larger form factor, on a larger screen. Beyond that, I'm excited and simply can't wait for Stories this fall!
The previous update introduced a nasty sound bug into Ocarina of Time 3D, which brought the Sheikah Stone portions to a frame rate crawl and added horrible clipping to the music. Thankfully, this latest update fixed that because it was pretty bad. (So these stability updates actually do something... 😃)
The Switch has a ways to go in terms of its library and services (such as the online infrastructure) before I jump on-board. But things seem to be going well thus far. I just hope Nintendo has learned some - keyword, I said some because they won't ever learn all - lessons and can keep it up...
Breath of the Wild looks fantastic but I'm not the biggest Zelda fan so I can definitely wait to play it. I have no immediate plans on purchasing the Switch - more so because I don't buy new tech as soon as it launches. Still, when a new Pokemon gets announced (Pokemon "Stars," perhaps?) that's likely when I'll break down if I don't have one by that time.
Hmph, typical Nintendo stuff. I don't plan on getting a Switch right away so perhaps they'll address some of the shortcomings in the coming production runs.
While I'm no fan of mobile gaming and abhor the apps themselves, this is what a lot of people wanted (not necessarily on this site): they said Nintendo needs to get with the times so this is what we are given. Ask and you shall receive, lol! I guess this is good for Fire Emblem fans who love to play games on their phones...
Monster Hunter games always seem to elude me... I'm either too entrenched in another game to lose focus and split playtime between two titles or it seems there are too many entries being released at a normal clip and I just can't keep up (especially considering the time-sink the games are). I've tried a couple (4U and Generations) and never seem to get past the tutorial stage...
While I love my New 3DS XL (as I'm primarily a handheld gamer), I am ready for a more "mature" system from Nintendo. I'm definitely going to enjoy DQ7 and 8 for the next few weeks and any other good-looking game(s) that release for the aging system. But I'm also looking forward to new horizons with better, beefier tech inside. (And while I was a little bewildered about the lack of StreetPass functionality in the Switch at first, I'm not at all worried about it now.)
My main system of choice is - and always has been - PlayStation. But, I've also always had a Nintendo handheld because they're masters of handheld gaming. I will inevitably get a Switch sometime - perhaps this year, even. But I definitely will NOT be purchasing a Switch at launch. I'm someone Nintendo probably should've tried targeting with a strong third-party lineup but alas: I believe the Switch will probably have a smidgen more third-party support than previous systems but nothing comparable to what they've been prattling on about for months.
Not interested in this at all. I am completely over anything with motion controls (although I was never a fan of them in the first place). And $60? Please. It has too much polish to be a pack-in title but it should definitely be a budget-priced launch game. This will easily be one of those games you'll be lucky to get 50¢ for at a retail game store some months after release.
Before the presentation, I was cautiously optimistic. After the presentation, I still feel the same way. While I generally liked what I saw (for the most part), the presentation offered little actual footage of games. (That's to be expected since this system hasn't even launched yet.) I won't be purchasing one March 3 although I will at some point soon-ish. In my opinion, a system's library doesn't really start being fleshed out until about 1.5-2 years into its lifespan.
Good riddance to the Wii U. And while the Switch has the potential to be something special, I'm still cautious. Cautiously optimistic but still cautious because... Nintendo.
While I'm cautiously optimistic about the Switch, I'm fully expecting the same absent-minded stupidity from Nintendo upon its release. I'm expecting extremely limited storage capacity (along with a crappy solution, e.g. SD cards), region-locking, a lacking online infrastructure, blahblahblah. I'm fully prepared to eat my words if I'm wrong - and I'd LOVE if I were wrong. But I'm not expecting much.
As someone who lost interest in Mario games after SMB3, Mario Maker for 3DS has me hyped for the rotund plumber. (And if anyone asks why not go for the Wii U version, I don't have a Wii U and likely never will.)
@MetalKingShield In terms of the cartography, I'm wondering how an Etrian Odyssey game would work on the Switch... (That's assuming we would even get one.) The series was created around the concept of the dual-screen system with the original Nintendo DS.
@RR529 I'm guessing Kingdom Hearts 3D didn't make the list as it assumes you have every single system needed in order to play enough of the series to "understand" what's going on, lol
@YANDMAN Yeah, yeah, I know. It doesn't make it any less annoying when they do it, though. I don't want one of these (although I think they're pretty neat) but it has to be more than a little annoying for those who want to get their hands on one without all of the extra cartwheeling through hula-hoops Nintendo has their fans doing for simple games, systems, and accessories - especially those of us outside of The Golden Kingdo, I mean, Japan.
As someone who doesn't own a Wii U, I'm excited to play this when it releases even though it's definitely the gimped version. (As such, I'm not sure what these Mystery Mushrooms are or what they do.) As far as the amiibo support, no surprise there. I must say, though, I'm a little surprised Nintendo still pushes these pieces of small plastic.
@Prizm I agree. The commenting system here makes it a little laborious to keep track of anyone responding to a comment you leave (unless you read the whole thread or just sign up for email notifications to notify you when someone responds to a comment you leave).
@heathenmagic Who knows if there will be any more games that take advantage of the "extra processing power" of the New 3DS systems. But what I can almost say for certain is probably not. The only games in this category that come to mind are Xenoblade Chronicles for 3DS (in which a New model was required) and Hyrule Warriors Legends (in which the New models got a slight but noticeable performance boost) - two games out of the entire library. The 3DS is definitely going to see more games released for the system but the majority of them are already in the pipeline. I expect a considerable amount of developer focus to shift toward the Switch.
While I'm a sucker for 3DS themes, this one is very "meh." Save for Isabelle's face emblazoned on the top screen, the color choice is bland, the music is boring, and there's no detail happening in the background (except for 'My Nintendo' on the bottom screen, which they could've kept). I went ahead and cashed in some points to get it before they expire as this Isabelle one is the best of the lot I've seen.
I won't miss dual-screen gaming at all. While the concept has overall been decent, there hasn't been a ton of games across both the DS and 3DS libraries that really harness the second screen as an integral part of gameplay. The DS library had more games that harnessed this concept such as Hotel Dusk: Room 215, Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, etc. But generally, the second screen is where pause menu features are thrown. Honestly, I don't mind having to drill down to those same features via the start/pause menu(s). I'll miss the dual screens as "the end of an era" type thing but it doesn't bother me at all that it's gone.
@Urameshi I agree in terms of having little to no faith in Nintendo recently. But we're still not out of the woods entirely. I will definitely say the Switch is off to a good start but there are other potential concerns of mine, particularly things like a proper friends list; voice chat; repurchasing VC games; an account system... (Yes, I know: Nintendo Account. But the 3DS still has NNIDs. And you can only be "logged into" a single "account" on the 3DS at a time.) That third-party list is impressive but we've been down that road before with the reveal of the Wii U... I loved the trailer and am totally interested and excited about the possibilities but there's still a few things that need to be cleared up before I'm all in (been fooled by Nintendo once before).
@Spoony_Tech Because this is Nintendo, I'm expecting the display to not be a touchscreen. Not to be a pessimist but Nintendo generally takes one step forward and three steps back and as cool as the Switch appears to be, this seems no different. I'll wait patiently for details on this feature but I'd be legitimately surprised if it has touchscreen capabilities. Them skirting around the question leads me to believe the functionality isn't there. But we'll see.
@BenAV As far as Switch potentially being the end of dual-screen handhelds, all the children I see in public with single-screen tablets don't seem to mind.
@Xaldin I'm with you on this. It's mildly fun but all the scores it's been giving boggle my mind (and that's because Nintendo Life's score is the lowest I've seen in comparison to other sites). I don't know anything about Severed but I think I would've enjoyed that way more than this. I was expecting more and honestly thought Mastiff would've put more effort into cleaning this up instead of doing a straight transfer of the original to a newer system. I'm not sure if I'll finish it.
Much respect to the men and women who localized DQVII: I really admire their dedication and excitement they had in their work. It even comes through in these interview excerpts. I'm going to save DQVII for a little later in the year so I can have a massive RPG to finish the year with.
Assuming Capcom doesn't like those numbers (which, knowing them, is a logical assumption), it probably doesn't bode well for MH Stories coming westward. They might decide to localize it but I'm not holding my breath. Capcom's pretty shifty anyway and while I think these are decent numbers for an RPG spinoff, Capcom may have been expecting numbers closer to the main series - which is ridiculous but companies and investors ultimately care about the bottom line and nothing else. Here's to hoping, anyway (and for a physical release ::clears throat:: Ace Attorney).
Glad I didn't buy any of the new games... I don't understand Nintendo or their oddball ways. (I don't care to understand them either.) They really couldn't have left the servers on here in the US or overlapped service till the NX arrives (if it's even real)?
Nintendo, if you're listening (or, rather, reading since this is online): MyNintendo is utterly worthless junk. And Club Nintendo got nixed for this... You guys could've kept whatever this "program" is supposed to be. Nintendo, as clueless and out of touch as always.
@Gauchorino Hmmm, nice to know! I think I caught wind of a limited print run of the River City game but was completely unaware of a physical release for Dual Destinies being in the works... Now, that would be great, especially considering how C(r)apcom has pretty much gone digital-only regarding the Ace Attorney games in North America.
@Gauchorino That'd be fantastic but is extremely, highly unlikely to happen for any territory. I never say this since I prefer physical media but I think Mastiff would get more return on their investment by rightfully placing Gurumin 3D in the eShop. (As an aside, I think the name "eShop" should be renamed to something more modern.)
@LegendOfPokemon Just checked online and found an article pegging the official date for Game Stops receiving Volcanion download vouchers as October 10 (other than the previously mentioned nebulous October 2016 date). Of course, that means the local Game Stop here will likely get them a week later... (I really dislike that place...)
I've had so much fun collecting all the legendaries and mythicals they've distributed since the beginning of the year. I only had a few (because the first Pokemon main series game I ever played was Black & White) but by the end of the year, I'll have every single one! Also can't wait for the Volcanion distribution!
Can't wait to pick this one up once it arrives on the eShop! I remember it on the PSP but never got a chance to play it because, well, I didn't have one at the time.
I don't know why the headline made me belt out a sinister little chuckle... Perhaps the evil little Grinch in me is ready for the Wii U to locate its headstone among the used batteries, frayed wires, and rusted parts of the EOL Graveyard. Here's looking forward to the NX... whatever it is.
Yeah, yeah with all the positive talk. The same stuff was spewed before the Wii U dropped and we know how that turned out. Guillemot's word is about as trustworthy as Fils-Aime's, in my opinion. I hold my reservations for the actual reveal from Nintendo (and even then, that won't mean much unless they've really learned their lessons once it gets out there in the wild).
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They've killed the Wii U and now they expect us to fork out money for the NX after treating us so badly. The reality is an overarching majority of people will display their reluctance to trust Nintendo by securing an NX as soon as preorders go live to have it on launch. I don't have a Wii U (never really wanted one) and I hear you but most consumers complain all the way to the cash register (and is also a reason why companies get away with ill practices as much as they do).
Hoping we hear some localization news for this sometime at the top of 2017. I've yet to play a Monster Hunter game and while I plan to (and think I'd get addicted to it), MH Stories seems a little more styled to my type of RPG. In terms of their business practices and reluctance to give fans of certain series what they want, I'm no fan of Capcom ~~cough, MML3, RE~~ But keeping my fingers crossed for a Western release, nonetheless.
If Capcom really wants Monster Hunter to break new ground and bump up to the next level, they sorely need to give the series some much-needed overhauls. Now, I know a lot of MH heads are going to say the high barrier of entry is "part of the fun" - and I'm sure it is - but that doesn't mean the menus, for instance, couldn't be reworked a little to be less obtuse. As awesome as MH is, it also seems intent on keeping some of the things that need changing the same a la Pokemon.
Beyond that, Capcom: you could bring over Monster Hunter Stories before another MH game proper. My Japanese isn't nearly good enough to import a text-heavy game like MH Stories.
After having played my first ever Dragon Quest game via Chapters of the Chosen on the DS last generation, I've been a DQ fan ever since. I've generally never really cared much for the numbered Final Fantasy games (mostly because I dislike the active time battles in later entries) and hate how DQ doesn't receive nearly as much attention in the West. I'm still playing my way through Bravely Second but I'm enamored that I'll have an amazing DQ to play right afterward! (And totally can't wait to download the 3DS theme as well!)
I think I'll switch over my preorders for Sun and Moon to the Dual Pack. I'll only be saving a little under $7 but the Dual Pack does come with the bonus of 100 free Poke Balls for each game (which is nice as funds are a little hard to come by early in the game). I don't really care about limited edition hardware (especially since I'm convinced Nintendo could've implemented the faceplates for the New XL models if they really wanted to) but this Sun & Moon XL looks very enticing... Hmmm...
GOOD! As primarily a 3DS gamer, September's release schedule as of yesterday's Direct is going to body my wallet, lol! Can't wait for this, though. I missed both on the eShop and I'll always prefer hard media for Nintendo games.
@Equinox Yeah, it just took them the entirety of the 3DS's lifespan to do it, lol! Anyway, I'm glad about this; did the update this morning and besides the fixes and additions they're reporting, Mii Plaza runs noticeably smoother and more fluidly. (It seems Nintendo did some optimizations to increase the frames per second... Nice!)

Interesting they won't be implementing Mega evolutions in future entries... While it was a semi-cool concept, it felt half-baked in practice and didn't really add anything to the overall gameplay (other than a few Pokés gaining a cool, new "Mega" look). Hopefully, these Z-moves will add more to the actual gameplay rather than being almost an exclusively cosmetic addition a la Mega Pokés.

@Phil_Kavadias Like @Alshain01 said, it's 99.9% hacked. And I know all the arguments for/against hacked (or "hacked," as others might prefer) Pokés, including the ones about hacking them to where they have legit stats, natures, moves, etc. even if they aren't from official events or distributions. I simply prefer to get my mythicals and legendaries from official events and distributions. I love the Pokés but not enough to start hacking little lines of code with cute faces that don't even exist... lol
Re: Mythical Pokémon Keldeo Confirmed for Anniversary Distribution in October
I've had so much fun collecting all the legendaries and mythicals they've distributed since the beginning of the year. I only had a few (because the first Pokemon main series game I ever played was Black & White) but by the end of the year, I'll have every single one! Also can't wait for the Volcanion distribution!
Re: Hands On: A Blast From the Past With Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure
Can't wait to pick this one up once it arrives on the eShop! I remember it on the PSP but never got a chance to play it because, well, I didn't have one at the time.
Re: Nintendo is Reportedly Taking 'Final Orders' on Wii U Consoles From Retailers
Re: Ubisoft CEO: "Nintendo Has Learned from the Wii U"
Yeah, yeah with all the positive talk. The same stuff was spewed before the Wii U dropped and we know how that turned out. Guillemot's word is about as trustworthy as Fils-Aime's, in my opinion. I hold my reservations for the actual reveal from Nintendo (and even then, that won't mean much unless they've really learned their lessons once it gets out there in the wild).
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Continued Commitment to the 3DS Makes Sense
@SLIGEACH_EIRE They've killed the Wii U and now they expect us to fork out money for the NX after treating us so badly.
The reality is an overarching majority of people will display their reluctance to trust Nintendo by securing an NX as soon as preorders go live to have it on launch. I don't have a Wii U (never really wanted one) and I hear you but most consumers complain all the way to the cash register (and is also a reason why companies get away with ill practices as much as they do).
Re: First Impressions: Monster Hunter Stories Borrows Liberally From Iconic Nintendo Franchises
Re: Capcom Working On New Monster Hunter To "Aggressively" Increase Sales
Re: Review: Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (3DS)
After having played my first ever Dragon Quest game via Chapters of the Chosen on the DS last generation, I've been a DQ fan ever since. I've generally never really cared much for the numbered Final Fantasy games (mostly because I dislike the active time battles in later entries) and hate how DQ doesn't receive nearly as much attention in the West. I'm still playing my way through Bravely Second but I'm enamored that I'll have an amazing DQ to play right afterward! (And totally can't wait to download the 3DS theme as well!)
Re: Pokémon Sun and Moon Themed Solgaleo Lunala New Nintendo 3DS XL Model Confirmed for North America
Hmmm...
Re: Azure Striker Gunvolt: Striker Pack Has Been Delayed to 4th October
GOOD! As primarily a 3DS gamer, September's release schedule as of yesterday's Direct is going to body my wallet, lol! Can't wait for this, though. I missed both on the eShop and I'll always prefer hard media for Nintendo games.
Re: StreetPass Update Adds New Minigames and Premium Option to Hold 100 Hits
@Equinox Yeah, it just took them the entirety of the 3DS's lifespan to do it, lol! Anyway, I'm glad about this; did the update this morning and besides the fixes and additions they're reporting, Mii Plaza runs noticeably smoother and more fluidly. (It seems Nintendo did some optimizations to increase the frames per second... Nice!)
Re: Picross 3D Round 2 Launches Today on the North American 3DS eShop
...sigh...
...another digital-only release...
This, Rhythm Heaven Megamix, Ace Attorney...
