It feels like Nintendo's been a little quiet on Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, considering that the game is launching less than a month from now. Of course, we mostly know what to expect from the core experience, but there will still be some exclusive new features, such as the tough Medal Challenges. Interestingly enough, it seems that the game will have some sort of amiibo support, too, though how this will be implemented still remains a mystery.
Nintendo's official amiibo compatibility page features a list of most Nintendo games that feature amiibo and how they work in each game, and Super Mario Maker 3DS has been spotted at the bottom next to Breath of the Wild in the "Upcoming amiibo-compatible games" section. Bear in mind that Nintendo has said that Mystery Mushrooms won't be featured in this port, so all the different character sprites from the original are out. Perhaps each figure will unlock a level centered around that character?
What do you think? What will amiibo do in this game? Will you be picking it up? Drop us a comment in the section below.

Here's to hoping any big updates and new features in this version will also come to the Wii U version.
Well it does this for one:

Wait, so it won't have Mystery Mushrooms, but it will still have amiibo support regardless?
..Huh..?
Come to think of it, what even is the excuse for it not supporting mystery mushrooms?
It was a big enough deal that there were N3DS cover plates that celebrate them.
Please, give Roy amiibo a function in this game... Awesome amiibo, but it doesn't do much.
Eh, still not interested in this game since it can't (correctly) interact with the Wii U community.
Maybe they backpedaled on their Mystery Mushroom statement? Other than that, beats me.
I could see them possibly having amiibo unlock special levels.
This is rather odd, considering the cover renders they released in press coverage does not feature the amiibo logo, which is nowadays dominant over the Nintendo Network logo.
Probably just for 30th anniversary Mario and its associated power-up.
This comment system really sucks. Please switch to disqus.
I think it would be awesome if we could save levels to Amiibo. Perhaps they would require too much space, though. I just think the best use of Amiibo are things that save data to them and I hope we see more like that.
@HopeNForever There's a chance that it's an error, but I doubt Nintendo would goof on something like that. Makes one wonder, though!
I find it interesting, too, that you can click through and see what amiibo does for Breath of the Wild, but you can't do anything with the Mario Maker logo.
Wonder if we scan all 400+ HHD Amiibo cards for Super Mario Maker 3DS...
Isabelle / Tom Nook / Digby / etc appear as playable characters then... XD
Maybe all it does is make a mushroom 1up sound when you scan it. Remember this is Nintendo.
As someone who doesn't own a Wii U, I'm excited to play this when it releases even though it's definitely the gimped version. (As such, I'm not sure what these Mystery Mushrooms are or what they do.) As far as the amiibo support, no surprise there. I must say, though, I'm a little surprised Nintendo still pushes these pieces of small plastic.
@Prizm I agree. The commenting system here makes it a little laborious to keep track of anyone responding to a comment you leave (unless you read the whole thread or just sign up for email notifications to notify you when someone responds to a comment you leave).
@c1pher_c0mplet you can also check if someone's mentioned you by looking at your user menu above.
And just as I've called it before, just like that, between announcement and release it turns out the game will indeed have features boasted by the Wii U version. My guesses are:
1) What you guys think amiibo support is for: profitability. As in "the game won't have Mystery Mushrooms [and as such it won't feature course uploading, either] but it will still implement amiibo so that this game can still push amiibo sales".
2) What I always thought would happen: Nintendo saw the backlash that came from the version differences and took the time between announcement and release to backpedal from their initial plans, simple as that. There's no way the lack of course uploading and whatnot is due to hardware limitations, it was more due to Nintendo not wanting Wii U owners to be left out until they realised this was turning potential 3DS owners away and they ended up choosing the lesser of two evils.
Super Mario Maker: Grossly Inferior Edition! ... Pass.
I'd like them to add the ability to actually share your levels online too.
@SanderEvers If Switch doesn't allow for some kind of touch/stylus input then I expect it would be very difficult to make it a better version on that system than what we've seen on the Wii U or 3DS.
Most common theory behind no mystery mushrooms is about licensing .. 3rd party companies only maybe signing up to have their games on the Wii U. Nintendo don't wanna pay again for a game this close to the end of the 3ds cycle... same for online...those servers don't come cheap
It'll probably just let you play stages featuring the costumes in question, like the unlock stages to get mystery mushroom costumes in the Wii U game.
Will it feature Ryu support? That's honestly the biggest reason I stopped playing Mario Maker.
Mystery mushroom DLC?
It'll probably just support the SMB1-exclusive Big Mushroom from the 8-Bit Mario amiibo.
Perhaps Nintendo's adding them after some of the backlash they received. I guess we won't know til the game launches.
@SanderEvers Well, that's the rumour at least.
Yawwwwn. No full online support = no deal.
@SanderEvers only in tablet mode. In console mode you would have to use the rumoured wiimote style controller instead, which could be annoying
@HopeNForever covers can change, it might be a feature they weren't going to implement but due to people wanting it, they have decided to put it in there?
Ugh... I really wanted this to be good. Once I found out there were no mystery mushroom costumes and it was just an overall dumbed-down version I cancelled my preorder. I have it on Wii U so there's no reason for me to go and get a watered-down experience. ...at least not at that price.... I'll wait for a price drop or some sort of announcement of cool features. For the right price this could be awesome.
Hopefully so. The lack of Cosplay Mario is one of the biggest reasons I initially brushed aside this port, TBH...
@Mitch_Dyer Nintendo's amiibo site is seriously inaccurate.
They list Mario and Link as being imcompatible with games such as Planet Robobot, when they obviously are. Nintendo JP is a MUCH better source, and Super Mario Maker is NOT listed.
A dumbed down version is still a portable version, so this is still a planned purchase for me! A lot of my friends don't have a Wii U and I'm out of the house a lot, so being able to make levels and share them with my friends w/o internet is cool. (still crossing my fingers they add sharing via QR codes)
That, and I like the idea of having a real campaign sort of mode in this game. The 100 Mario Challenge is woefully unbalanced.
I still don't like the removed features, but just being on the 3DS is a HUGE feature for me.
