Today Nintendo and Capcom announced Monster Hunter Stories would be releasing in Europe and the US this Fall. Stories released in Japan last October to critical acclaim, as is expected for nearly any release in the franchise in its native country.
Monster Hunter enjoys a smaller, but equally loyal following in the West. That said, Stories is a different animal altogether, in that it's more of a traditional RPG and is more story-driven from what little we've come to know of the game.
We have a feeling series fans will love this new entry, and the new art style may even attract some new gamers to the franchise. We'll keep you updated on Monster Hunter Stories as more information is available.

Yes please!
Glad it is coming to the West. Would be awesome if they made a Switch version of this. I love the art style.
Looks really amazing. I haven't been touching my 3DS lately and this is a title that will bring it back to me. Maybe!
I tried the demos for the main series games and I just could not get into them. Hopefully I'll have more fun with this title!
Oh, WOW !
Never expected before.
Btw, I wonder if some DLC contents still included like Chibi Maruko Chan, Kumatomo, etc considering those DLC franchise are Made in Japan.
So the MH exclusive Amiibo are finally coming stateside? Finally! I need to use them for my Animal Crossing game.
Probably my highlight of the ND and I still don't own a 3DS. I always thought this was as close as we'll ever get to a good DreamWorks Dragons game.
Any word on the amiibo? They are by far the best of the bunch.
I'll take it, best news from the Direct as best as I can tell.
Why not sooner ?, better later than never though , been waiting for this one love the art style.
I feel like this is a MH I can support...except Switch...has sorta ruined handhelds for me.
@rjejr The boxart has the amiibo logo:

@rjejr Agreed. Best amiibo of the whole lot. I have been waiting patiently for this game to release.
These amiibos have so much more life than the three new Links they just released.
@CrazedCavalier Yeah, there's exclusive MH Amiibo that never came stateside https://www.amazon.com/amiibo-Navirou-Moster-Hunter-Stories/dp/B01HK5II7O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492041931&sr=8-1&keywords=monster+hunter+amiibo
YESSSSSSSSS
Monster Hunter: Totally Not Pokemon
I have all 6 amiibo for this so I'm well ahead of the game.
I've kind of moved on from the 3DS- once you go Switch it's really, really hard to go back to the old guard of portable gaming devices.
But this is Monster Hunter, and one of the best looking 3DS games I've ever seen. I will definitely make time for this game, along with Fire Emblem Echoes and Pikmin.
3DS was a great system. It still is. I don't like it nearly as much as I like Switch, but it's got a lot of great games.
I saw this coming due to the American release of the anime, but also because they've actually bothered to adapt character names (Leus is now Ratha, Ayuria is now Avinia, etc). Man, I'm stoked for this game!
Cant wait I already have all the Amiibos! Pre-Ordered them on AmiAmi and they are so sweet!
This is a definite change of things as a Monster Hunter fan. But riding, swimming and flying a Rathalos?
And battling? Sounds familiar, but it's Monster Hunter so I'll take it!
I'm surprised that the Direct didn't flog the amiibo. I'm not sure I'll bother getting any more Monster Hunter games as there's almost no chance of me completing any of them, but I'm keen on the amiibo.
Since I'm not really into MH, I'm going to wait and see on this one. It looks intriguing though!
Finally! Just need some info on the amiibo now.
Only makes sense to bring these games to the Switch, Capcom. Jeez.
Hope amiibo come too! Will get this game, even though it doesn't look like Monster Hunter at all.
@LegendOfPokemon
I don't think the main series games demo well at all. I have put 100s of hours into MH games, but couldn't enjoy the demos. You would think that a hard battle would be a good way to demonstrate the game but it just doesn't work. There is so much pleasure in the gameplay loop, progression by improving your gear, getting better by learning the behaviour of the monsters, so you can read them. None of that comes across in the demos. If you have thought about MH, consider taking a punt and giving it a real shot. Maybe when a version is finally released for Switch...
I've never been able to get into the Monster Hunter series, having said that though this one looks fantastic, i think i will have to give it a go
I'm not a Monster Hunter player but Stories looks really good. When I saw the first gameplay footages the only thing I could think was "will it get localized?".
Well, now thank you, Capcom. It's a day one purchase for me
this is a very welcome surprise
Was not expecting this since I heard that the game did not do all that well in Japan. Still great news
Don't remember who replied to another comment I had made on another article, but they basically told me this would never happen. So awesome they now get to eat their words. Looking forward to this game coming to the West!!!
After my experimentation with the core Monster Hunter series I feel this may be more to my tastes with more emphasis on story and traditional rpg elements.
And I have the same as many people commenting here; Switch has spoiled me. 3DS and Vita both feel small and retro. Still will go back, need to finish Bravely Second and both Trails of Cold Steel.
I haven't been using my 3DS much since getting a Switch, but between this, Ever Oasis and Fire Emblem: Echoes, it seems it'll be getting some well-deserved love very soon. So many games, so little time!
I literally yelled, "YESSSSSSS!!!" out loud when I saw Monster Hunter Stories go across the screen, lol! This was easily the highlight of the Direct presentation for me, mostly because I felt the game had a lower chance of being localized outside of Japan. I've tried MH3U, 4U, and Generations and I simply can't enjoy it with the 3DS/handheld controls, which are too cramped and generally uncomfortable for me. I believe I'd enjoy the main series a lot more with controls on a larger form factor, on a larger screen. Beyond that, I'm excited and simply can't wait for Stories this fall!
This is the best announcement of the Direct for me. Day one purchase!
With this having a storyline and turn-based battles, I might actually get into Monster Hunter. This actually looks good.
So strange that 3DS got all the "big game" announcements and Switch got all these "small game" pick up and play type games. It's like their roles have reversed. This and Ever Oasis were the highlights. So wrong that all the core games are on the outgoing system.
@Ryu_Niiyama There's about 5 of us here who post that in every thread about as often as slig complains about Switch....we're probably annoying...but I can't help it, it's the truth. Switch has spoiled me and my beloved 3DS seems kind of...old afterward
@NEStalgia Yeah I've been side eyeing Nintendo about a 3ds player since the Switch came out. I'm like "3ds?! What is this peasant console?"*. Oh you missed the fun in the direct thread. Grab a bingo card when you go. I tossed Sliggy on my ignore list day one. I have nothing against the guy, but I'm at a point that I know what he is going to type before he shows up. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life. Positive Ki and all that. I plan on signing out for the E3 posts so I can play bingo though.
*I'm being mostly hyperbolic and facetious for those that can't read sarcasm in text.
@Ryu_Niiyama It's really so true. I dunno, other than Persona 5 and BotW the best 5 games of the 8 month span (including my backlog, which is extreme) are all 3DS. I love 3DS. Favorite console ever. Surpassed SNES which I thought was impossible. Adore that thing. Didn't want it to end ever. Got Switch and it became "that old thing?" I kind of feel bad tossing aside such a beloved machine so casually. I've kind of internalized Japanese animism. I blame Nintendo in my childhood for that. It shouldn't be discarded so readily like that.
I jumped in the fray, looked at seeing exactly what I expected (at least one aspect of a Direct where you always get exactly what you expect is the NL comments!) kind of noped out of bingo-level observation and just skimmed posts for people I know instead Congrats on you puppy BTW! Might need a bigger pooper scooper. Not sure how you managed to acquire it...
Yeah Sliggy goes back and forth on my opinion list, but I haven't ignored him. He's predictably negative in comment starts, but on occasion he does have genuine conversation and humor to add and is a lot less trollish than he used to be, actually engaging in conversations now and again There's worse more worth ignoring. He's negative, but he doesn't attack anyone ever. Just when I was getting close to just giving up on him and hitting ignore, he had a few laugh-out-load funnies and I decided he's ok, he just needs to reign in his pessimism and use his inside voice more often. I SHOULD go back and bingo it though
@NEStalgia Well in my defense half of my current systems are planning to push the Switch down some stairs. I didn't think the Switch line up was bad personally, but I play a LOT of stuff so, yeah.
Apparently according to my puppy (I wanted to call him piglet over the Ganon avatar, but I thought that was too on the nose) I'm depressed over representation because I like amiibo... and cracked a joke about it. Or something. I think. He didn't make a lot of sense. ...Dude, I'm a female African American ("that's all you got?" was my response after my initial confusion) for crying outloud. I got bigger representation issues in gaming to deal with than a dragon lady that was kidnapped at birth getting an amiibo. My list of characters that even somewhat "look like me" and don't involve a character creation generator are paltry at best. Not that I'm going to stop gaming because the world is the way it is, either. But it is very funny to watch. He is a newer user, I kinda hope he hangs around. Best free source of amusement ever.
You know, I did notice that he has become a bit more willing to have a conversation. Except about amiibo, lmao. So I've thought about taking him off my list. But he is a bit on the anvilicious side for me. I just wanna give him a hug and a flower and be like smile man, it is a beautiful day! I like most folks on the site but there are a few that I kinda go "don't talk about this because..." to make my day go smoother. I just focus on gaming talk and my occasional female gaming viewpoint (its like yelling into wind, I don't know why I bother) and just have fun.
@Ryu_Niiyama I find I'm more likely to "play a lot of stuff" during a console launch when there's nothing else. Ok, well that only applies to Switch and 3DS now that I think about it. I dont' recall trying every weird game under the sun on any other platform But once "my" games start arriving I tend to focus down to my (admittedly broad) niches again. Adventure, RPG, any big world to explore, plus I've got a soft spot for platformers or weird genre benders. So there's a few things in the Switch lineup I could "maybe try this out a little, looks kind of fun", the 3DS lineup is the one that had my jaw on the floor with "OMG NEED IT NOW!"
Yeah I was missing the context of the whole trolling argument going on there. I thought maybe I missed something from another thread You probably have less representation issues than most gamers. Lot of games include "diversity because the boss made us do it" characters. Not many games include pimply, sweaty, overweight socially awkward pubescent male with anger management issues as heroes. That they THINK the He-Man figurine represents them indicates a different set of issues. Jigglypuff probably comes closer.
You worked in Gamestop. You know it's true.
I dunno, a new user that manages to pick a fight with one of the most agreeable people on the forum is probably not likely to last long here once picking fights with some of the more....impulsive...users. Enjoy the puppy before the dog catcher arrives.
Yeah, I mean he's definitely set in his opinions, and fixed on them like a guardian laser, and he's setting himself up for major disappointment with what he wants the Switch to be. I've tried pointing out to him where that's not going to go well but it's not bad for Switch, but he still wants to be fixed on that, and that will make him that much more negative around the next year or so.
But it's also funny because he will be getting a Switch eventually, and I'm betting he's going to love it (because who can't love Switch?) (and defend it forever while being negative about the succeeding console). Some people troll because they hate Switch and Nintendo and want to beat their chests. He's just desperately trying to convince himself he hates a console that he's probably not going to hate But he'll hate it right up until he buys one. (There's my bingo prediction.)
@itslukec Been waiting for this game too. The amiibo, I agree, are just awesome. I ended up importing them just to have on my shelf. So happy the game will be coming so I can put them to use (outside of Animal Crossing I mean).
@NEStalgia I'm all over the place with gaming. I have the classics and then stuff where people are like "you like that?" or "I don't even know what that is..." So I'm usually pretty happy even with most barren lineups (which the Switch isn't...but at this point Hamster can just come out and say they are porting all the Neo Geo games and I'll be like "sold, you need my bank account info?") Gaming is sorta like my musical tastes. With 3ds most of is is stuff I held off on importing in hopes it would come stateside. So I'm happy but in a "ok I can finally put this in my library" happy sort of way. I'll feel differently once I get that tv out, I'm sure.
Man, I was missing the context of the start of it myself. I'm trying not to spam this post with images, but do you remember when Woody and Buzz are at the gas station in Toy Story and Buzz goes on about Woody interrupting his mission and Woody looks like somebody hit him with a 2x4 before he goes "WHAT? What are you TALKING about?"... That was me. Ganon was Buzz.
I keep a strict "this is play" mentality about gaming. In the long run as a consumer it isn't important (in the sense that it is life or death) and it is a luxury and childhood pastime that still brings me comfort. Just because others see it as serious business (tm) doesn't mean I have to. Actually you can't be a girl gamer for long and do that anyway.
True about the manbabies, but snowflakes gotta be snowflakes. And Jigglypuff had a good voice and that is a positive, just....zzzzzzzz Huh? What? Gamestop blasted all empathy away from me. Most delusional, presumptuous, rudest yet woefully misinformed people I've ever met. Dudebros... I got cussed out once by a parent who I told that we were out of DS Lites (I'd also told the same guy six months prior to preorder for our hardware shipment because xmas was going to be short...he said I was crazy..ok) and apparently my skin color and my sex were the sole reasons no gamestop had a DS Lite for 200 miles. If I knew I had that kind of pull, I should have gotten free games from Nintendo. Gotta use my powers for good. My manager at the time did ban him from the store.
A lot of people think if you aren't wildly argumentative then you are a coward or an easy mark. I adore discourse. (You and I write walls of text all the time) But I'm allergic to logical fallacies. Besides I'm an Aikidoka, we don't go through people, we move out of the way and help show them the location they were trying to get to...namely the floor. But yeah if he'd done that to a few other users the mods likely would have stepped in.
Ima leave Sliggy alone after this since I can't see his comments, but honestly based upon his earlier posts he "hated" the wiiu before the switch came out. Amiibo are scams but he owns some (I'm not buying anything I consider a ripoff. I'm not made of money like that). I think he is hipster angry at this point. I figure either he is one of those people that craft a persona online (I'm likely too honest online so I don't know what that feels like) that is different from his "real self" or this is his venting place. I get that, I have a site I go to and just talk smack as well. Sometimes you need that. Or he just doesn't notice the tone of many of his posts. I don't think folks should gang up on him, but I do think people are tired of having positive convos being derided and derailed because "it's my opinion" (tm). But there are people WAY worse than him. Like I said I don't dislike him or anything, just you don't need an 8 ball for his posts and if I was that put off by something as he seems to be...I'd stop doing it. But that is just me. Not big on high blood pressure. Some people thrive on it though. I keep thinking he has red hair though...I'm terrible, I know.
About time. I was wondering when this thing would come out.
@Ryu_Niiyama I'm not sure what it is about gaming that attracts the overreaction people right and left that feel the need to tell the world, and to constantly point out to the world that the world is wrong and they are right. I tend to avoid the ignore lists though, chiming in with logic and facts when the conversations go off the rails was one of those compulsive needs that made me one to join in to begin with instead of lurking. I have a hard time watching the crazy unfold, knowing people can be influenced by it so much, without putting a counterpoint out there. You said you're a trekkie, and while you're in the referencing other medium loop I'll add to it: you know the part in the beginning of Generations where Kirk keeps getting half out of his seat every time the captain was making "play it safe" calls? That's been me for the past several years reading this site
Actually I think I agree with him that amiibo are a scam. And I somehow keep buying more. And I hate myself for it. Because Amiibo are a scam. It's like a tic that I can't ICE CREAM control. Did I seriously need that Guardian Amiibo and Rider Link? No. Did I buy them? Yes. I DON'T KNOW WHYyarnyoshi.
"Hipster angry", I like that. You could be right, it could be an image. I've just assumed he can't justify the expense on one right now and thus likes to put down the whole platform, "If it's not a justifiable expense for me it's not justifiable for anyone!" But that theory isn't always consistent. Who knows. But at least he's mellowing. Maybe it's all just a role playing thing. He's won a few threads with humor content, so at least he can be a positive contributor to the forum now The red hair...never pictured that...but...now I'm going to. You're a bad person and you should feel bad.
Ah, I'm happy its getting localized! Though I don't know if the system will be very fun to use, the art style looks gorgeous!
I'm really impressed with the amount of longevity the 3DS is showing post-Switch release. When all is said and done, I feel like the 3DS will end up ranking as one of Nintendo's best systems in terms of the quality and quantity of available games. It has certainly been a dream for anyone who loves the various forms of JRPGs.
I think the power-profile of the 3DS (which I understand is about at Gamecube-level) is a sweet spot for developers in terms of development costs and flexibility. There's enough power to do a lot of interesting things, but no so much that users expect to be blown away, or a developer feel compelled to spend a ton of development resources on bells and whistles. You get decent, passable graphics, but the developers put a lot of emphasis on gameplay.
I also will lament the eventual death of the second screen. On a system with so many RPGs, the second screen has been vital in showing stats, menus, etc., with the touch screen simplifying use of all those things.
Sorry, I'm waxing poetic about the 3DS. I really love mine, and I'm trying to enjoy its bittersweet ride into the sunset.
Wow! Finally! Also, Capcom...is it still too late to bring E.X. Troopers over here too?! PLEASE!!!
Like MH4U and Generations, it looks good in high res. Too bad it is on 3DS. Still interested, but I hate that screen.
Was expecting MHXX localization anouncement
Got MHS localization announcement
Was much happier with actual outcome
I'm so hyped for this, especially because I had already given up on the thought that this would be localized. Looks like I'll have a reason to play my 3DS eventually after all.
@Torakaka @CrazedCavalier "The boxart has the amiibo logo:"
It will probably only work w/ the nowhere to be found Guardian amiibo.
I don't play Monster Hunter and I don't collect amiibo but I still might buy 5 of these if all 6 come west, that 1 just doesn't do it for me, I'm all about the dragons.
@rjejr Wish it was just the monsters and not the riders. They're nothing noteworthy; just vanilla PC #7482, edgy rival #6245, buffoonish comedic relief #6802, and mysterious female #5921.
@CrazedCavalier The riders make them non-scary kid friendly though. Which I think was the intent, but also what probably lead to the game not selling so well in Japan. I think this game could be bigger in the US than Yokai-Watch but they'll never market it correctly or make enough amiibo. Dreamworks Dragons has a following and Trollhunters is a big hit on Netflix and I think this follows in that same imaginary kid vein.
