If this were another company, I'd be excited. Since it's Nintendo, meh: we'll see what comes of it. This should be a big move, full of exciting possibilities. But this is the Iwata-led Nintendo: over-promise, under-deliver as well as confusing, perplexing, backwards decisions. I'm a Nintendo fan but... we'll see.
As fantastic as Splatoon is going to be, one game can't 'save' a system. Period. And that's really a shame because there a lot of people who are going to miss out (including myself since I don't own a Wii U and probably never will). It's also a shame that because of Nintendo's crappy leadership under Iwata, the dev team could've made more return on investment if the Wii U install base was bigger than it is (and will probably ever be). I'm hating that I'm missing Mario Kart 8 and a couple others but I'm not spending $300-350 + tax for a system I'm only interested in a handful games for. The Wii U was supposed to be the "Gamer's Choice" but as usual with Iwata, over-promise, under-deliver. Maybe the next one, he'll actually mean what he says.
Although I never finished it, Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon on the DS was my first foray into this incredible series! (I also have Fire Emblem: Awakening but I've been playing other games first like my 50+ hour save file in Fantasy Life )
No words. I thought Level-5 was better than this. As someone heavily invested into the first, I was excited beyond measure for the imminent sequel. This is unbelievable. Most disappointing news for me all day.
Why Nintendo would even waste time on porting Mario Kart DS to the Wii U when the 3DS has the superb Mario Kart 7 and Wii U has the incredible Mario Kart 8 is anyone's guess. Nintendo's oddball business culture is definitely the Idiot's Parade. Even more so, I don't understand why they'd waste time porting any handheld game to be played on the Wii U, tablet controller or not.
@DreamyViridi I'm with you on that: I don't give a hoot about Banjo-Kazooie either and am kinda surprised at how many people in the comments actually would care to vote for the character(s). I always thought the games were lame and boring and even though I had left Nintendo console-wise after the SNES, I would've rather played DKC instead of Banjo if I had a choice. To each his own.
Interesting: an indie title that gets the New model exclusivity treatment — I'd expect that from a major release (like the upcoming Xenoblade 3Dmake). In any event... YEEESS!!! This will be a day one purchase for my N3DS! Thank you, Mr. Adelman for pushing against Nintendo's crusty, draconian ways. I can just imagine the internal politics he had to put up with in general but especially trying to push this game thru... I never really understood why they were so against this game based on other mature titles on their platforms. And there are Nintendo games with religious overtones in them as well (of course not like this game apparently but that's comparing tomAtoes to tomAHtoes).
@MoonKnight7 I agree. While I played thru the demo, waiting on the enemy's turn was a minor annoyance and that's all — it didn't deter my enjoyment of the game at all. It was a minor annoyance at worst (and a quirky "feature" at best). As fast as processor speeds are these days (even in non-bleeding edge tech like Nintendo's), waiting for opponents to move should totally be a thing of the long past.
Man, I really felt bad for you amiibo collectors after watching the Nintendo Direct yesterday lol: there's so many new ones coming up!! The wallets are gonna be smoking! And I can already see future articles (on NL included) regarding the limited quantities of these Yarn Yoshi amiibo and scalpers going at it once again. I'm totally not into these collectible gaming toy thingies but this one does look really nice. I may have to partake in the nonsense to secure/preorder one for my friend because she totally wants one to put on her table.
While I'm no stranger to writing code, I'm not even going to front like I'm even halfway in the league of a game programmer or even understand the nuances of the discipline. However, I simply have to scratch my head and wonder if the length of enemy turns was really something that couldn't have been addressed before releasing the game... Perhaps they ran out of time? I don't know. Anyway, this should DEFINITELY help as it was the only thing I didn't like about the demo. I'll actually go purchase the retail version now.
@No-longer-postin Nintendo just needs to redo the eShop layout, period. We all understand Nintendo wanting to make the eShop "cutesy and fun" because that's what they do. But in terms of game and app discovery, the store is an utter mess. (And I'm still waiting to see when we're going to get a proper username/password login from Nintendo instead of this convoluted NNID mess. Hopefully, before I'm an old man.)
@Kaboom I hear ya, pal. But don't hold your breath; I doubt Iwata's listening. I prefer the bigger New XLs (just like the former XLs) but portability could be nice... Who knows, they might do a surprise release of the New 3DS in North America like they all-of-a-sudden announced the 2DS last year. You never know with Nintendo.
@unrandomsam I hear ya, bud. I'm just not looking forward to those type games. I've gone thru my mobile gaming phase a few years ago, got a DSi XL at the time, and never looked back again.
We'll have to wait and see what comes of this. But I have a hard time seeing anything other than Nintendo taking their shot at delivering their versions of the same crap that litters the App Store and Google Play Store. Using said apps as a sort of "gateway drug" to coerce people to buy/play on Nintendo dedicated hardware, that's a win. Personally, I'm not looking forward to endless runners with Mario characters; match-threes with Pokemanz (although those exist already); or Peggle-types with Pikmin; or something like that. On the other hand, I also wouldn't care for Nintendo "full-length" gaming experiences on mobile either. Hand me a Nintendo handheld and a decent console (or merge the two somehow), and I'm good.
With basically little to no information on any of these things, I don't think anything right now but we'll see. While the possibilities are endless, I remain highly skeptical of Iwata... I love Nintendo but can't stand Iwata.
Nintendo's not gonna do jack. As cool as their ideas are, they always seem to take 10 steps forward while taking a thousand backwards. We'll have to obviously wait and see but I'm eternally skeptical of the Iwata-driven Nintendo.
@thatguyEZ Nintendo's stupidity regarding amiibo availability has poisoned them for me too, and I'm not even invested into them as I've never purchased a single one (and don't plan to as I don't care about them). Actually, Nintendo's ::cough, Iwata's:: stupidity in recent years has generally turned me off from them. I'll always be dedicated to their handhelds (which is my only investment into the company) as they're the best in the industry but they're too out of touch with reality for me. And their attitude toward the Majora's Mask XL debacle and the ridiculousness that amiibo hunting has become is completely ludicrous. Notwithstanding small things that simply annoy. Example? I traded up from my old XL to a New XL last night with a complete system transfer. My New XL was defective; the retailer I bought it from said they'd be cool with letting me get another one. Problem? System transfers can only be done every 7 days. Now I have to wait till next week for my new system. I understand why Nintendo feels the need to do this but it's too draconian. Why can't you give us a simple login, Nintendo??? AAAARGH!!!! I love you guys but I hate you guys at the same time. I really hate what they've become, especially compared to how they were when I was a kid...
@midnafanboy Yeah, I got the point. Didn't know I was potentially starting a flame war o_O. While I'm generally up on gaming, I don't profess to know EVERY SINGLE DETAIL of EVERY SINGLE GAME, including Bayonetta 2 (which honestly hasn't been on my radar, mostly cuz I don't have a Wii U and probably won't for a looong time). And if @Dazza hadn't corrected me, I probably wouldn't have known (or would have a lot later when it didn't matter anymore). I obviously missed some news on the subject, was wrong (like no one else here hasn't been), and got corrected. I didn't know it was that big a deal. People online, man... It's been funny watching a lot of NL users foam at the mouth about something that was squashed waaay back in the timeline, though lol XD
I could be totally wrong... But I still think Bayonetta 2 will eventually lose Nintendo exclusivity and end up a "timed exclusive" being ported to PS3/4 and/or 360/One. I just don't see Platinum keeping it exclusive especially seeing how small the audience is for such games on Wii U. Or they could go the Kingdom Hearts route and have single sequels exclusive to an entire assortment of hardware platforms. o_O
Even though the standard New 3DS will have interchangeable face/back plates, I wonder if Nintendo will still find a way to tick people off by not offering certain plates for the standard New 3DS... I mean, if it's possible to switch plates on the fly, doesn't that mean you should be able to take any of them off and apply them if you wanted to?? Hmmm...
Can't wait! Wish this was coming 2014... And IT'S ABOUT TIME Nintendo gave us a second analog that's ACTUALLY ON THE HANDHELD: Thank You. No more of that Circle Pad Pro/CPP XL crap.
@Ralek85 Seems like you've been putting up with Nintendo's crap for a long time: I commend you, friend. Personally, Nintendo has always been a "secondary" company for me. While I have an absolute blast with their offerings (I'm a 3DS-a-holic lol), they are just too draconian, too stubborn, unwilling to address their shortcomings, and it's only getting worse as the years progress. Their eccentricity is their biggest asset and their biggest failure. And in my opinion, Iwata & Co. don't make it any better.
@Captain_Toad True about the company needing to learn hard lessons from this generation. But the "Iwata Era" Nintendo NEVER learns anything. Even when they do something awesome, there's always a major facepalm to follow nearly (if not) obliterating the awesome.
"Should Nintendo Be Promoting The Wii U GamePad As A Tablet Killer?"
No. Because even basic tablet functionality is not possible on the GamePad, notwithstanding the GamePad is functionally useless when not in close proximity to the Wii U unit itself. (And even if they wanted to, I don't think 21st century "weeny" Nintendo would even entertain marketing against a competitor the way Yamamuchi's Nintendo did during the Genesis days.)
@DJSmith99 I meant generally. There are handful of mature games for Wii U but that's just it: a handful. I'll take quality > quantity every time but Nintendo (and gamers) could definitely profit from more outside support.
@Geonjaha "Nintendo needs to venture more into adult games... There's a reason a lot of people don't look to Nintendo anymore - they've outgrown them, and this shouldn't be a problem, because Nintendo could easily make games for all ages."
Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've observed since I started getting into gaming, Nintendo has NEVER made mature games, and I don't see them ever deviating from that because they make games that appeal to everyone.
What I think you might be getting at (and if so, I wholeheartedly agree with you) is that Nintendo has virtually no mature games because they're third-party support SUCKS. It's really up to non-Nintendo studios to bring in the mature games and beyond many of them feeling there's not enough Wii U's in the wild for a mature game to be profitable (yet?), third-party studios have traditionally complained about wrapping their heads around Nintendo's internal hardware designs. And then tack on the competition offering systems that are simpler to code for and you can see the third-party hegira from Nintendo to other platforms.
Next time around, I'd like to see Nintendo go with an internal design more closely resembling a PC architecture, not to copy competition but in 2014 and beyond, I don't see any real reason not to: systems are computers anyway. And doing so would definitely open up to third-parties. But no, Nintendo is never going to themselves make mature games. (And I don't want them to because that's not who they are. They just need to make it easier for non-Nintendo studios.)
I wish Nintendo would do something about that awful NNID sign-in screen when accessing the eShop. And to integrate the stock Friends List into Miiverse since the former has been rendered completely useless when Nintendo decided to ax Swapnote.
I wouldn't mind the Warriors series so much if the enemy AI at least approached you or something; they just stand there. It's like beating up paper machete figures. Don't have a Wii U (yet) and not really interested in this game (aside from the lush visuals). Maybe I'd try it once it's < $20 in a bargain bin somewhere lol
I don't use Miiverse at all since the ancient Wi-Fi radio(s) in the 3DS is/are so slow. But it's nice to see Nintendo's continued support for Miiverse through updates (something the company still doesn't have down 100% for its platforms).
...smh... Nintendo and their ways... They'll never change and never learn, never. And the whole while, they're being lapped and can't figure out why... I like them but I'm also NOT a blind follower that just accepts some of this nonsense they do (which I believe is a small part of the problem).
This again... 3rd parties on Wii U... Hmm... It's all a balancing act to me. It could happen and then it couldn't. I still think an managerial restructuring would do contemporary Nintendo some good because they're still coasting on a largely outdated formula in the 21st century. I don't have a Wii U so all this doesn't bother me (and makes me party of the problem too. I'm OK with that.). We'll see what happens.
Personally, I think Nintendo's Digital Event was the best out of their's, Microsoft's, and Sony's pressers: I really enjoyed it. But it's still not enough for me to get a Wii U. Yet. While I really enjoyed what I saw on-tap, that's just it: a lot of games are 2015 releases (and I wouldn't be surprised at all if Captain Toad slips into next year). I guess it's difficult to suggest Nintendo revitalize older franchises and create brand-spanking new ones (although I'd be ecstatic if they did) because they're having to go-it alone either the entire or majority of this generation by themselves (e.g. no third-parties). That wouldn't be so bad if they were bigger or had more "internal" partners.
Capcom potentially going under? Best gaming related news all day: I can't stand Capcom. If they get bought out, hopefully the new owners will actually do something with the company's mascots and give fans what they want instead of empty promises, crazy DLC practices, and so forth.
Generally, I'm against Nintendo's overly draconian policies especially when it comes to their lacking online infrastructure. But I'm totally cool with and applaud them for not allowing Miis to duke it out online; it makes sense. (Whoa, Nintendo made sense! Is hell freezing over? lol) I've had enough of that kinda junk from random StreetPass opponents in my Mario Kart 7 cartridge.
I really hope Hyrule Warriors takes the Zelda series and DW series, merging them into something new and fresh instead of a DW game with a Zelda coat of paint (and judging from gameplay videos, it seems like the latter rather than the former).
I thought Nintendo had a brilliant E3 presentation! The games, the development teams, Aonuma, Reggie... everyone and everything was great. And it was made even better by the fact that I didn't have to see nor hear Iwata.
Anyone familiar with any retail stores that actually have a Nintendo 2DS kiosk to try out? I'd like to play with one but I've never seen a kiosk for the system (and maybe they'll never put any up seeing as how the 3DS systems tend to be more popular). I've been to places like GameStop, Best Buy, Target... No cigar.
We need to put Nintendo in a "casual game(r)" detox program. Look, Nintendo: you caught lightning in a bottle with the Wii (and subsequently got dumped by the same people the system targeted). But there's something you've gotta realize... It's over. Just stop already.
@AG_Awesome Thanks for clearing that up. The wording on a section of Renegade Kid's blog made it seem like Episode 1 was the entire game and 2-4 were "expansions." Even if this initial portion coming Thursday will only be 1/4 of the entire game, it still doesn't deter me from purchasing it later this week.

They just need to make it easier for non-Nintendo studios.)
Re: 3DS System Update 8.0.0-18 is Now Live
I wish Nintendo would do something about that awful NNID sign-in screen when accessing the eShop. And to integrate the stock Friends List into Miiverse since the former has been rendered completely useless when Nintendo decided to ax Swapnote.
Re: First Impressions: Hyrule Warriors Is Zelda, But Not As We Know It
I wouldn't mind the Warriors series so much if the enemy AI at least approached you or something; they just stand there. It's like beating up paper machete figures. Don't have a Wii U (yet) and not really interested in this game (aside from the lush visuals). Maybe I'd try it once it's < $20 in a bargain bin somewhere lol
Re: Satoru Iwata Reigns Supreme in Annual Shareholders Meeting
Mmm... Oh well.
Re: Miiverse Update Adds Post Embed Option, Activity Feed Customisation and More
I don't use Miiverse at all since the ancient Wi-Fi radio(s) in the 3DS is/are so slow. But it's nice to see Nintendo's continued support for Miiverse through updates (something the company still doesn't have down 100% for its platforms).
Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Discusses Future Cross-Platform Development as an "Opportunity" for Nintendo
...smh... Nintendo and their ways... They'll never change and never learn, never. And the whole while, they're being lapped and can't figure out why... I like them but I'm also NOT a blind follower that just accepts some of this nonsense they do (which I believe is a small part of the problem).
Re: Nintendo Looking To Grow Wii U Audience To Tempt Back Third Parties
This again... 3rd parties on Wii U... Hmm... It's all a balancing act to me. It could happen and then it couldn't. I still think an managerial restructuring would do contemporary Nintendo some good because they're still coasting on a largely outdated formula in the 21st century. I don't have a Wii U so all this doesn't bother me (and makes me party of the problem too. I'm OK with that.). We'll see what happens.
Re: Capcom and Treasure Team Up Again for Gaist Crusher Sequel
@shinokami THIS so much! I hate to sound like a hatemonging troll but I also hope Capcom dies, FAST. I wish they'd just go away like a long time ago.
@Raycon Totally. I'm still fuming about them totally dissing fans regarding Mega Man Legends 3. (Love that avatar btw )
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Successfully Wooed Some Wii U Doubters at E3
Re: Capcom Could Be Up For Sale After Shareholders Reject Anti-Takeover Plan
Capcom potentially going under? Best gaming related news all day: I can't stand Capcom. If they get bought out, hopefully the new owners will actually do something with the company's mascots and give fans what they want instead of empty promises, crazy DLC practices, and so forth.
Re: Talking Point: Mii, Myself and I - The Arguments For and Against Miis in Super Smash Bros.
Re: E3 2014: Hyrule Warriors Not Part of Zelda Timeline, More Like an Avengers Spin-Off
I really hope Hyrule Warriors takes the Zelda series and DW series, merging them into something new and fresh instead of a DW game with a Zelda coat of paint (and judging from gameplay videos, it seems like the latter rather than the former).
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's E3?
I thought Nintendo had a brilliant E3 presentation! The games, the development teams, Aonuma, Reggie... everyone and everything was great. And it was made even better by the fact that I didn't have to see nor hear Iwata.
Re: Nintendo Confirms New 'Sea Green' 2DS Model
Anyone familiar with any retail stores that actually have a Nintendo 2DS kiosk to try out? I'd like to play with one but I've never seen a kiosk for the system (and maybe they'll never put any up seeing as how the 3DS systems tend to be more popular). I've been to places like GameStop, Best Buy, Target... No cigar.
Re: Exclusive: Lost Wii Game, Sadness, To Be Revived as Wii U Exclusive
@sugarshack Dre wouldn't have said that because that was Cube's line. (And you have a Lyricist Lounge avatar, my friend...) Just sayin'.
Re: Here Are Five New Retail Titles Coming to Wii U
We need to put Nintendo in a "casual game(r)" detox program. Look, Nintendo: you caught lightning in a bottle with the Wii (and subsequently got dumped by the same people the system targeted). But there's something you've gotta realize... It's over. Just stop already.
Re: Review: Moon Chronicles: Episode 1 (3DS eShop)
@AG_Awesome Thanks for clearing that up. The wording on a section of Renegade Kid's blog made it seem like Episode 1 was the entire game and 2-4 were "expansions." Even if this initial portion coming Thursday will only be 1/4 of the entire game, it still doesn't deter me from purchasing it later this week.
