No system is perfect, and that idea applies to the Switch as well. We like to be as positive as we can be on Nintendo Life but we need to be critical and objective in our line of work.

As such this video mogul has coupled ten good and bad points about the Nintendo Switch (five of each) and slung them together for you to indulge in at your leisure. Make sure you leave a comment below with your own list should that take your fancy.

It's not balanced though. There's definitely more negative than positive. I've listed them before but am in a rush to go out so can't go through them again. Enjoy the Fire Emblem Direct and I'll catch up later.
I just think sales will be slow until mario comes out and its underpowered and under storage memoried for a home console at that price. Its competing directly with a ps4 pro and it loses that battle.
I like it and will buy one but im not mainstream im crazy nintendo fan. Although im still not sure if i cancel my pre order and wait for a bundle because the launch lineup has one game in my opinion for the first 6 months.
Right now im not so interested to put out 500 dollars for switch and 2 games when they could have been done on wiiu. Maybe this autumn or next year will be better so i will wait.
There's no bad - it's a perfect system. Of course I'm saying this because I'm excited that I have the system preordered and paid off.
It feels like a kind of soft launch right now, I'm guessing they'll make things more enticing for everyone by the end of the year.
I would love to see Nintendo to create more Teen and Mature games for the Switch if they can't reel in third-parties. I see no reason why Nintendo can't target PS4 and XB1 users, and the Switch would probably sell very well when combined with Nintendo's high-quality exclusives.
@bolt05 It's not competing with the PS4 Pro, because most PS4 owners won't upgrade to the Pro, and all games will support the regular Ps4. It's competing with the PS4 and the Xbox One.
yeah the presentation killed some of my hype, I still want it and I'll buy it but no day 1 for me, more like holidays.
Really hard to say whether it'll end up being "good" or "bad". Hardware looks pretty darn good (except for the apparent lack of analogue triggers, that's a bummer), and major first party titles are looking solid for the first year. Launch isn't super great, but it's not abysmal by launch standards or anything. No launch could ever suck that bad with Breath of the Wild there on day one, after all. Third party support is pretty hard to tell as of yet, because for one thing, the third parties need to see if it'll sell before they commit. For another, we don't even know the whole software lineup for the first year. That's gonna be revealed to us in the coming weeks and at E3.
For now, it's really a wait and see thing. Seeing as their whole approach to the online service and the app is kind of unclear right now, until we get more details on that, the main thing I think they should change is the price of some of the accessories like the dock, and some games like 1-2 Switch. Other than that, we're just gonna have to see how it plays out. Even if it starts out badly, it can always be turned around. It happened with the 3DS and Xbox One.
@Paddle1 here's hoping...
I'll however be doing anything and everything to afford one once Mario Odyssey launches, until then...
I'd like to read this opinion piece since I don't have wifi access today. Please consider those of us without the ability to play videos!
It will really pick up with Mario o dash
@Sinton it directly competes with ps4 pro in price.
Haard to gwt excited about mario kart when its a port of a game i have owned and played for more than a year.
@LegendOfPokemon I think that will help massively.
The one major downer for me was the over-gimmicked Joy Cons (which you seem to have put as a positive...) making me wonder that they've learnt nothing. Overpriced controllers due to pointless superficial tech that no one cares about? Sounds familiar... The whole ice-cube shaking/how many balls in the controller or whatever the hell technology just seems like inane nonsense that they shouldn't have wasted time and resources on.
Also, I suppose I was expecting more third-party games along the lines of Skyrim. I wouldn't have cared if they were last-gen ports. As a Wii U owner I missed out on them, and thought they'd be a shoe-in. Even the Wii U got some fairly high profile multiplats at launch.
@Haywired "The one major downer for me was the over-gimmicked Joy Cons (which you seem to have put as a positive...) making me wonder that they've learnt nothing. Overpriced controllers due to pointless superficial tech that no one cares about? Sounds familiar."
Nailed it. Much of the industry media outside of nintendolife are also largely shrugging their shoulders at all the unnecessary tech in the JoyCons. Reminds me of the GamePad and all its "amazing tech" that by and large went ignored or unwanted.
EDIT: honestly, damn good post all around. Well said.
@Haywired well said. The launch line up is distinctly worse than the Wii u imo!
@Haywired @gatorboi352 @BinaryFragger
I see Nintendo's tech choices for the Switch and the Joy-Cons with their hefty pricing as a building foundation. You could look at this huge space eating concrete block, by itself at least, as ugly, unnecessary, its purpose for future use in question, etc. But in the future, when this gloriously colossal building goes up, you're going to go back and think that it was a really good idea to build that concrete slab under it, because without it, that glorious Switch building is going to collapse.
For those of you that didn't understand, the Switch's HD Rumble, subject recognition technology, depth sensors, and sheer versatility and expandability, is going to come in handy in the future when Nintendo has new game ideas and doesn't encounter any roadblocks when developing these brand new titles for the Switch, because they already implemented this tech in the beginning, so they don't need to develop a new console for their new ideas.
Even simpler, Nintendo made the Switch future proof so they don't encounter any problems when exploring new ventures and add ons for this system, such as VR, AR, something else-R, and so forth. Hence, the steep initial price and accessories.
Also, remember that their handheld and home console teams are merged now, so games will be coming out at a faster rate and they will have more people and more room to experiment and explore their hardware integration options.
PS: It was also a good idea to not bundle 1-2 Switch, because that game is only meant for parties and to serve as an ice breaker. It's not really a fully fledged game title. If you go to parties and have a very social lifestyle, you buy it separately for that very purpose. I don't know about you, but me and a lot of other people don't have that stuff going on. Therefore, it isn't a required bundle.
My guess is when ARMS releases, they will produce a hardware bundle including that pre-installed, because obviously that game is more in depth than something like 1-2 Switch, if you catch my drift. My guess is when Odyssey releases, they will include that with the Switch, then make it their flagship bundle. Sort of like in 2013 with NSMBU & Wii U or SM3DW & Wii U. I'm talking about bundles, of course.
TL;DR: Oh well, your loss.
@gatorboi352 A wild pessimist appears!
On a serious note, the JoyCons do have some unnecessary stuff like that thing that recognizes whether your hand is doing rock/paper/scissors or whatever, but I personally like the HD rumble. I guess that just comes down to personal preference, though.
I definitely have high hopes for the Switch and expect great things to come out of this year for Nintendo.
I'm also hoping that the sub-title there is a well placed Sworn to the Sword reference..
@BinaryFragger Pretty sure can turn off the motion controls in games where it's not explicitly obvious that you need them, like Just Dance.
The Japanese 3rd party support is there. It always has been (3DS) and always will be - because handheld.
Switch has that.
@alex
Great video. All the negatives can easily be corrected in time. All the positives make me 😬. Glad I preordered one in time.
Yeah Nintendo needs to show why this tech is must have. Ice cubes/ marble games are cool to try once. We are paying for tech developers may find a good use for in the future.
I'm disappointed with the games. You can play Zelda and Mario kart on wiiu. 1-2 is not worth buying. Bomber man looks like a 9.99 game.
@BinaryFragger
I have that concern too, but I can't see it being forced too much as for most games such things would severely hinder the portability when in handheld mode or with the pro controller. I can see it being like AR on the 3DS; they'll make a big deal out of it at the start as a key new "innovative" feature, but before long it will be quietly forgotten as they realize that people don't really care about that sort of thing.
It must be doing something right. Logically the negatives seem overpowering.
-High price
-Poor launch line-up considering they've had so much time to prepare
-Ovepriced accesories
-No analog triggers
-No word on VC
-Not enough info on the online service
-Nintendo being Nintendo could lead to it being a flop
-Anaemic third-party support
-Gimmicks and gubbins in the controllers. One of two launch games is a facile looking minigame collection. I don't want another Wii.
-Low onboard storage
Yet despite all that I haven't cancelled my pre-order yet. I like the look of the hardware and I really want it to do well. As it gets closer to actually handing over £330 to basically play a game I could play on the Wii U I may well change my mind and cancel but I'm leaving the door open for Nintendo to do something that pushes me over the line.
@ULTRA-64 Only a gamer that has never touched a game that hadn't been released on a Nintendo console would be impressed by the games that came out with the Wii U.
One new, amazing game that is a true system seller like Breath of the Wild is a lot better than 30 old games that everyone except Nintendo-only gamers had already played and quite frankly didn't care about.
NS is competing against it's own shadow: Excellent Wii, Wii U, DS & 3DS game library.
@electrolite77
Remember that the confirmed launch and 2017 games so far are EXTREMELY unlikely to be the final last revision lineups. There will be more to reveal, mark my words. Preferably with a Sharpie®.
Whilst I'm a big fan of all things Nintendo.
The Switch for me currently has to many negatives.
32gb only internal storage is frankly shocking by today's standards regardless of whether the games are on cartridges or not. Expandable storage only by SD cards really!!
Launch line up is poor aside from Zelda.
I am loving the new controller's and the different ways to use them.
I will get a switch but it'll probably be a present to go under the Christmas tree when there are more games on offer
Nintendo Life....where is the pro controller? I cannot locate one, anywhere and now I see this:
The Switch’s Pro Controller Mysteriously Disappears off Retailer Websites
http://twinfinite.net/2017/01/switch-pro-controller-disappears-off-retailer-websites/
I know its available in the UK, but despite having pre ordered almost everything else, I cannot located this item anywhere on a US website. Not even a listing saying sold out...what gives with the US supply?
I just want more details. I want to hear more about the online services and I want them to announce some surprise games that are coming out at or close to the launch of the system.
@electrolite77
I know what you mean. I was super-high on the Switch after the first trailer, and I can't deny that my optimism decreased a fair amount after the presentation (I guess it was like the equivalent of 'reading the small print'), but despite that, I do still feel positive towards it. When you remove all the gubbins (from the second reveal) it still looks like the really solid console (from the first one).
I recently picked up an Xbox one S, with the Divison, Gears 4 (plus Gears 1-3 and judgement) and minecraft, for £210
If I was an impartial buyer, looking to buy a console ( with the knowledge that one has all the 'big' games, media capabilities etc), I know which one looks the more tempting.
Fanboys can grumble all they like, but it's the average person on the street that Nintendo need to convince. Honesty, I don't think Switch can do that.
/edited for typos.
I'm not all that concerned about 3rd party games. Unique ones will be welcomed, but ports not so much depending on what it is. And yes the accessories are kinda pricey. Oh boy..
If 1,2, Switch fails and no other company it's going to make games with those gimmicks, I would like to have a cheaper version of the joycons, without that many useless crap. With that the console Will be like 250 in the US
Similar to what Microsoft did killing the Xbox One kinect, Making the console a lot cheaper.
@BiasedSonyFan
More Japanese support. Not the guy from Amusement Vision mumbling about how we'll see something soon. More Western games would be nice as well as they're playable on the go but as I'm expecting Switch to run riot in Japan I expected more.
@Sinton in a way it's not even competing with them. It's something that's different enough to warrant somebody buying it as a second console because of the potability. It is the only console you can play Nintendo games on. If it gets suitable 3rd party support it should do well.
As a long time Nintendo fan, I'll eat my shoes if every one of those games listed in point 1 actually DO come out this year. I love Nintendo, almost as much as they love delaying games...
Good: Zelda, Mario, portable/ console hybrid, joy cons are neat
Bad: launch window games are poor and few, prices on everything is ridiculous, barely any western developer support
A handheld that has the power of XB1 and PS4.....I think they should have tried to get to $249.99 but other then that I think they are doing alright. People complain about the launch lineup but Zelda day 1 with a few other titles then you have ARMS, Mario Kart, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, and Mario Odyssey and a slew of 3rd party titles. It is an impressive first 9 months if everything makes it out.
Did they screw it up by claiming it's a home console that is portable instead of claiming it's a portable that plays at home. That may be the mistake if it suffers poor sales.
It's a good looking system, and while the launch lineup is a bit thin, we seem to be hearing about more games that are coming to the system every day.
Of course, Nintendo will never be able to make some of these entitled drama queens happy. Such is life.
@Gerbwmu The perception is that home consoles are more attractive to Western markets, which is probably why they're calling it a home console.
In reality, it's anything you want it to be. I think mine will most likely be 70% handheld and 30% home console, but I could be wrong.
Well, i'm definetely 100% Sure want to buy Switch. But, after price drop and have more interesting games for me.
@iGen lol yeah, sure it will. The same future potential that the Wii U's GamePad promised. For the 2 or 3 titles that actually end up utilizing all that nonsense I'm sure it will be FANTASTIC.
Fool me once, shame on Nintendo. Fool me twice, shame on me. I'm not getting fooled twice.
I would prefer to call the Nintendo Switch a "Life Console" rather than a home console or a Handheld or portable console. . .
@geordie nailed it.
My points.
Good:
1. Hardware
Very professionally made. Looks like a premium piece of kit. A lot of tech inside.
2. Form and Function were considered by Nintendo.
The Joycons and Pro Controller have lots of tech inside that all do good things. But they also feel very good in the hands. They are seriously fun to use.
3. Game line up
The first year looks rather good. Not too much all at once so there's less competition for game sales. For example, no point putting out too many titles at launch because for a month or so everyone will be into BotW. Spread them out over the year and it's all good.
4. Advertising
Nintendo is advertising the Switch as they should be. Getting it into the hand of as many people as possible. Fueling the hype train. Something that simply didn't happen with the WiiU. People know what the Switch is, they understand it and they are happy after they use it.
5. Screen
Looks great. Has a great contrast ratio. Doesn't matter that it's 720p as the ppi is relatively high and the colours are very vivid and stand out. This is a high quality screen.
Bad:
1. The Price.
279.99 UK
469.95 Aus
Way too expensive. Even if you take into account tax and currency conversion. Sure I guess we're getting what we paid for but it's a bitter pill to swallow.
2. Potential use of the touch screen
Most games want to be the same in portable and docked mode. This means few will use touch screen as that's not available in docked mode. Will some games be made for portable mode only with the use of touch screen? I feel Nintendo forgot to think about this when designing the Switch.
3. 1,2 Switch
Should have been a pack in game with the hardware. A stand alone game at full price? No one will buy it. I certainly will not.
4. Different Limited Editions for different regions.
The BotW Limited Edition does not have the Switch carrying case in Australia. For the UK fans, they miss out on the Switch carryinf case and the map. Totaly unacceptable to deny the UK and Australian fans access to all of the Limited Edition loot without importing from the US or Japan.
5. The same game for Switch and 3DS.
We had Hyrule Warriors and Smash Bros 4. Both games were on the WiiU and 3DS. Many features for both were left out from both consoles because the 3DS could not handle them. Now we get a repeat with Fire Emblem Warriors on the Switch and 3DS. Will any features be left out of both the Switch and 3DS versions because the 3DS can't handle them?
The 3DS got it's own new FE game. Why make FE-W for both consoles as well? Makes zero sense.
Having all the info provided to me at the moment. I'm on the fence and its looking rather like i'm gonna Ditch it.
I was actually looking forward to it and maybe thought this time Nintendo have learnt their lesson. Who knows maybe a couple of years down the track, when there's games and maybe the system drops in price. I'll get one
The most baffling (and not surprising) is the Ninty fans ridiculing MS/PS for charging online gaming. And now that Switch has it. Everyone's is like fine with it.

I'm really torn on 1 2 Switch. I think I will tire of it after 30 mins, but I have young kids who will probably like it and probably be the only game they will play on it initially. Nintendo may put it on sale later, but I can get it thru Amazon for $40 now. Just can't decide. Also a pro controller or two more joy cons so all 4 of us can play mario Kart?
@the8thark Maybe this time theyll try to bait 3DS players into getting the Switch version of FE Warriors. Impossible with Hyrule Warriors now, so this is their chance to try out this tactic.
@LegendOfPokemon That would certainly be interesting...
Cool, because I already made a post about basically this that I can share here:
http://www.inceptional.com/2017/01/13/my-thoughts-on-nintendo-switch-and-the-jan-13th-presentation/
And this too:
http://www.inceptional.com/2017/01/14/my-two-top-trailers-by-far-from-nintendos-switch-presentation/
anyone who thinks 5 games day 1 launch is good is outta their minds. That's just terrible especially if your Not Into Zelda. That leaves you with skylanders, just dance and the other 2 weaklings!
Then you have to wait almost 2 months April 28th for Mario Kart 8?? Nintendo we've played that guys!! Cmon!! Splatoon 2 and Mario Odyssey should have been ready!! And don't even get me started on the absence of virtual console!! Jeez😡😡
Switch will be ok, even if it fails as home console it would gradually replace 3ds, so potentially switch sales figures would match 3ds.
@joey302 Just because they haven't said much about the VC yet doesn't mean it won't be there. Unless you were referring to the lack of talk about it on Nintendo's part.
I really want a Switch. But I can't justify it. I'm not a big Zelda fan )I haven't played Skyward Sword yet) nor any of the 3DS games (I own them all, mind you). 1 2 Switch is a big no-no and Snipperclips could be fun, if I can't get my wife or son to play with me. So, ARMS, Bomberman and Street Fighter II (for the right price) are the only games I'm looking forward. I have SPlatoon and Mario Kart 8 (with all the DLC) so both are not that enticing, be number 2 or Deluxe.
I prefer to wait for Black Friday and get it for 225 or 250, plus a pro controller and an additional set of joycons.
@KirbyTheVampire Here it is hoping!
And thank you for this balanced video @AlexOlney. I was actually looking for a good pro con comparison
Good.
Most of the games that the WiiU should've having open world game, rpg, platformers that are 3d, the like, including a killer app (breath of the wild)will be here at year one. YEAR.......ONE.
Region Locking is gone, Imports baby! (It may be me but we're looking at the PS4 of games and exclusives with all of these games coming in.)
Online Services improved, lobbies, voice chat friend system, FINALLY.
A rewards system with virtual console games receiving ONLINE SUPPORT.
Take with you anytime. anywhere.
HD Rumble.
Wii more controls seems is new and improved.
In the case of Arms, joy-cons motion controls will be OPTIONAL and not the main way. Hopefully a sign to implement optional control schemes to certain games. We all remember what happened with Star Fox zero and Metroid other M.
Cartridges are pretty much BAE.
Joycons are pre equipped with 2 players!
Bad.
Not so optimal price point for accessories like the joycons and controllers
No pack in game or voice chat at launch.
We're paying for online this time.
Internal Memory is without expanded upon is small.
Touch screen while improved will be taking a backseat on console mode.
Iffy
I'ding your hands via rock paper scissors is cool but I don't know what special function it'll serve.
Any more news on online like the cell phone thing, vc, the like, any other games that will be at launch.
"Hopefully a sign to implement optional waggle control schemes to certain games".......hopefully
You got breath of the wild at launch Nintendo, i want advertisements!
Bless their hearts! Nintendo just stinks at messaging. At least, this is the case in the Western part of the world.
I'll admit. I was left a little empty after the initial Switch presentation. They emphasized the wrong things.
Then, they turn around and give a pretty major Direct with Fire Emblem, today. I mean a mainline FE game on a home console next year. That's good news.
They just stink when it comes to messaging. That's about the best I can come up with.
No Monster Hunter. No Switch.
...of course i'm going to eventually purchase a Switch. But, my normal MO is to rush and pre-purchase, 1st adopt, and stand in line at midnite for these new Nintendo products. I have done that since the purchase of my first lovely monochromatic green Gameboy. But, now it's all about picking up the system solely because it has the games that I want to play. I must see a Monster Hunter IP on this product before I seriously consider the investment.
@fortius54 "They just stink when it comes to messaging. That's about the best I can come up with."
Yep. Pretty much.
@gatorboi352
Wow, somebody has been salted really bad.
I have a Wii U and I'm confident the same mistakes will not happen again. Trust this random stranger on the internet you know nothing about.
I was excited for this, as I never was for the Wii U (even though I bought the U on day one, but sold it a few years later with no look back at it). However, I really got excited with Mario Odyssey, then I saw it won't be available at launch, which pushed my excitement back. Plus, nintendo's online has never been good, and there is no way that I'd pay for their online service...I rarely pay for Playstation's and never did for Microsoft's. Nintendo hasn't been good with online features, so...just like Alex said...maybe they can prove me wrong. Other than that, I won't be a day one owner, but I'll definitely get the system once Mario Odyssey arrives...until then, I'll get accessories and possibly Zelda, but wait on everything else...it's always nice to have things (games that is) ready for when you do purchase! I had PS3 games before I bought the system, but after the mess that was the Wii U, nintendo needs to show me that they care for the consumer and fan again, because they sure didn't with the U. Other than that, for the time being, I may purchase the Playstation VR, even though I think that's still overpriced too.
@the8thark At least regarding the FE Warriors game is coming to the Switch and the New Nintendo 3DS so maybe there is parity between versions and nothing is left out because of the weaker console.
Anyone who thinks Xenoblade 2 is coming out this year, I have a bridge to sell you
@AbsolutSnake I was the same way with you about the online payments. It seems every nintendo fan can only put Sony and Microsoft down...basically because they want to and almost all of them know nothing about the systems either, they just think they do. Nintendo will charge the same price as Sony and Microsoft, people will put down Sony and Microsoft, saying nintendo's is better, but in all honesty, nintendo's will be the poorest one...at least with Sony and Microsoft, the free games you get each month, you can continue to play for years as long as you're a member...nintendo stated that you can only play them for a month, and what will be the free games...NES's Super Mario Bros, Baseball, Tennis, Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and a few others that no-one really cares about anymore.
@Stargazer I'm still thinking Mario Odyssey won't come out this year too. I'm thinking that every game (and if I look at Amazon and Gamestop to see the dates for them...which have a street date of 12/31) they'll come out in 2018. I'm thinking there will be a pretty good drought this year, until the system begins picking up sales and more people start buying more than just Zelda for it...then we'll see more games and more 3rd party support...it's still a shame that Madden isn't even coming to it, as nintendo fans lose more sports titles for a system for a while at least.
@Niinbendo
To be fair they can't really charge for the first 6 months because they won't have much content (Bomerman, MK8, Splat) and they also won't have a large install base so not many are likely to be online during that time.
@KirbyTheVampire
I'm sure VC will be there, especially after the success of the mini. My 2 concerns with VC are no discounts for prior purchases (Nintendo is really raising the cost this round). And more drip feed. If we have to wait another year for them to release 50 nes games before they start releasing new content that sucks big time.
The 500,000 pre-orders at Gamestop seems wrong.
https://twitter.com/ZhugeEX/status/821134302465363972?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw
I have no doubt the Switch will sell out of the initial run as the Wii U did. But I wonder how many of those pre-orders are flippers. I know I'm not supposed to have friends that are scalpers..... But, my buddy and his wife have 10 Switch's on pre-order. I mean really no risk for him. If the demand isn't there or supply is high, he can just return to store and get all his money back.
@KirbyTheVampire I'm thinking the virtual console will be a little delayed like it was on Wii U. I'm just hoping that the whole E-Shop isn't delayed like it was on the 3DS...I remember having to wait months for the shop to finally arrive on the 3DS, and I remember the Wii U (for several months), having no new games, just changing the menu over and over again each week.
@KirbyTheVampire oh it'll be there but my point is it really should of been ready to roll with the Switch launch imo and a bunch of games to choose from. Let's say conservatively that they've been working on this for ...2 years? Maybe 3? I just feel the service should of been ready to go. If they're gonna start it all over again from scratch and then murder us with 1 vc game a week for 3 years then I'll def be upset about that. Add GameCube add dreamcast and bring back systems lost on Wii U like genesis, T16, master system , neo Geo etc etc. I've been saying this is a service that the other 2 simply don't have and Nintendo doesn't seem to take advantage of it. Retro is getting a larger audience all the time. I just hope they come through big!
@JLPick
I'm thinking Mario won't make it this year as well, but I don't want to sound too pessimistic Regardless, I'm not getting a Switch until Mario comes out.
@JLPick Another reason i think it will be the poorest will be its infrastructure. PS took almost as whole gen to get it right, and they're still having problems from time to time.
@joey302 Oh okay, gotcha. Guess the YouTuber I heard that number from was misinformed.
I think this was a good video
I feel like it did a great job of showcasing the good AND BAD (yes there are things to be concerned about with the Switch. Just because you haven't sold your soul to an unreleased system that seems to have some REAL problems doesn't mean that you're a jerk that hates Nintendo) of the Switch
@BiasedSonyFan
Not as much as I was looking for though
@maceng That's not my worry. What I am worried about is features left off the Switch version because the 3DS is not powerful enough. A good example fo this is Ice Climbers from SSB4. They were only remobed from the WiiU version because the 3DS version could not handle them and Sakurai wanted both versions the same.
I don't want Switch Fire Emblem Warriors features removed only because they can't be done on the 3DS. Ie. the Swich version dumbed down to the level of the 3DS just to have both versions the same.
@Stargazer And I have egg for your face to sell you when it does.
My JoyCons: (These are more joy*conerns*, than anything else.)
1. Definitely not interested in high prices, or online fees, especially if the online's bad.
2. No D-pad on the Joycons! That's been a Nintendo controller staple since the Game&Watch. Plus, it's a great alt to keep the analog stick, which is not always needed, still functioning.
3. Nintendo's message regarding how they will handle online overall, was/is on the confusing side of things.
4. That Nintendo will appropriately use the varied tech, in the Joycons, more than a few times/titles.
My JoyPros:
1. Hybrid! That's a "Woooooo!" from me I don't know though, off the top of my head, it's gonna be more a console, than handheld, simply due to its (replacement) price, & I'd rather it not get stolen, or broken. Still, I love the idea of leaving the tv, & seamlessly continue playing in another part of my home. This (exact scenario) is what the WU should've done, but oh well. Yes, by the way, I do live in a home, where the family shares a tv. No need to have one in my bedroom, if I don't watch it.
2. That Nintendo has included the tech they did in the Joycons. Taking, &/or improving upon good ideas from previous consoles/handhelds/hybrids is always a good idea. If I recall correctly, Nintendo wanted(or possibly forced?) 3rd parties to use primarily motion controls for Wii games, then (for WU) included, but did not force devs to use non-traditional controls for WU titles. Just b/c Nintendo presumably wants to distance themselves from the Wii/WU family, & eventually the 3DS, does not mean the good stuff from those systems needs to go.
3. I'm interested in TLoZ:BoTW, Arms, & to a degree, 1,2,Switch. I haven't seen the Treehouse streams, yet, so I may end up interested in 1, or 2 more titles. So, as far as launch, & launch-window, I'm pretty good. Also, Super Mario Odyssey later on.
Everything in this post is subjective. So, I'm not (trying to sound like I'm) apologizing, & I'm not speaking for the majority, either. There is a chance I may end up getting one during launch/launch window/this Christmas. I'm looking forward to playing the hybrid. Once I get to play it a few times, for a decent amount of time, in my Gamestop kiosk, then I'll know if I really want one, or not. Right now, it's lookin' like I will.
One MAJOR bad thing from me? Switch's price in Poland.
It's 1400 PLN. Breath of the Wild (the only game people seem to be interested in, as seen on Nintendo Polish FB profile) is priced at 250 PLN. So, you will need to shell around 1600 PLN (if you'll be able to nab some discounts) in order to play Switch, which is fantastic, as 1600 PLN is the ENTIRE monthly income for some people in this hellhole of a country. Of course getting some Joycon AC adapters or a Pro controller is out of the question.
To put that into perspective: for 1600 PLN I can buy a PS4/XBone with three games and accessories, or a decent notebook for work.
While I work as an engineer, and can buy a Switch any time, any place, I don't see many NS boxes flying off the shelves here... at least not until some discount.
My main system of choice is - and always has been - PlayStation. But, I've also always had a Nintendo handheld because they're masters of handheld gaming. I will inevitably get a Switch sometime - perhaps this year, even. But I definitely will NOT be purchasing a Switch at launch. I'm someone Nintendo probably should've tried targeting with a strong third-party lineup but alas: I believe the Switch will probably have a smidgen more third-party support than previous systems but nothing comparable to what they've been prattling on about for months.
I just find it a little ridiculous that a lot of us will not be able to use the most basic features for online play because of our mobile choice, considering it'll be a mobile app.
There's definitely more negatives than positives for me at the moment. If the Virtual Console details are going to be a bummer too, I will cancel my preorder and get it for Christmas with Mario..maybe there will be a bundle with more value by then. I can play Zelda on the WiiU and there are a lot of interesting titles coming to other platforms this spring.
@geordie
I got a deal something similar. Brand new Xbox one elite £200. That's with the Elite controller and hybrid 1tb hdd. I have to admit I like it more than my ps4 slim.
I think Switch is probably designed to be able to get a reasonable price cut after a period of time. If it's not it's history.
I'll pick one up second hand at a (much) later date with a couple of games and accessories.
This whole concept of play on your TV and then take it with you hasn't been done on this scale before. I'm interested to see how much it will change the way we game. The idea is actually growing on me more as we get closer to launch.
The launch line up at the moment looks mediocre. Zelda is a Wii u game. Arms and 1-2 Switch are not the kind of games I'm after and Splatoon is probably the only first party Wii u game I didn't buy, so not interested in Splatoon. I'm not going to be buying Mario kart 8 again either.
It's about the games and I'm not impressed. I'll be interested in Pikmin 4 and the new Mario. Will I buy a console to play 2 games? No.
I agree with people on price being an important point. If they what to sell as many as they can they will need to keep their profit margin on the machine as small as possible. Getting a bigger user base this time round is a must.
@Stargazer You and me both. There's nothing else that I saw that really enthuses me...I love Zelda, but not enough to buy a whole console just to play it...it will be available when I finally purchase the console, plus, for some reason, even with my love for Zelda, Mario would be played more.
@AbsolutSnake Good point. All of the companies have trouble from time to time...even Microsoft is still having problems with the ONE. Playstation 3 took a while to get moving, but most of the things that were available to be able to do on the PS3 (saving your TV Shows and Movies directly to the console itself) still hasn't made it to the PS4 (folders just recently got added, which should have been made at launch). Even the Wii took a while with letting you add the SD card and play games from that. Wii U took a long time to get things right and it still failed at it. 3DS took a long time too...the store wasn't even ready at launch and took 4 months or longer to be added. Anymore it seems the companies rush the console out (with problems) and just fix them eventually with non-stop patches, which shows that the companies don't care about the fanbase, the fans or the consumers, they just want the money...Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all show this.
Sadly, but in all honesty, there were more cons than pros (in my humble subjective opinion). I think it's pointless to keep repeating them, but the "no bundle" and overpriced games is what put me off the most. I still will buy the Switch when the right time comes, but not buying a day 1. Of course the outcome still might change for much better when the Switch is finally out and we will fully experience all the games available for it (and more will come in the future). So far some of the titles looks really amazing, but the launch line is pretty weak. But I'm glad the price of the console is not over 300 bucks. I naively hoped for 250, but still it's affordable and if we compare it with the past, N3DS XL was only a one third (or quarter?) cheaper than the Switch and N3DS is definitely inferior to the Switch. So I won't complain about it because the price could have been much worse, like 300-400 bucks.
Also I'm glad that Zelda will be launch title because I know Zelda has a huge fanbase. But I personally, I'm not really a fan of the Zelda games so I would have preferred a Mario launch title, but I understand it that Nintendo wants Switch to look more mature and attrack adult gamers and Mario, no matter how good, looks still like a game aimd at kids.
Also the paid online service is a half con half pro for me. A half con, because I'm yet unsure it is worth the price for what they offer and half pro, because I don't really play online (which means I don't have to subscribe and just stick to offline play).
My conclusion is that I will buy the Switch and later few games to play on (probably Mario Kart 8, Mario Odyssey, Syberia 3, Splatoon 2 and DQH and DQXI if it gets localized), but I will stick to my 3DS for the time being, til price drops and we get much more (localized) titles to choose from.
@Waninoko
Don't put down your country. I went to Gdansk on my holidays last year and I thought Poland was a fantastic country.
That pricing is the most worrisome thing to me.
$90 for the dock, where is that from? I haven't seen the dock sold separately yet, I wasn't aware it was being made available just yet.
