Re: Video: Immortals Fenyx Rising - Switch VS PlayStation 5 Graphical Comparison

aSmilingMan

Tough crowd. Seeing some really harsh comments on here.

Seems like Ubisoft actually did treat the Switch version properly. Looks like there were hundreds of people hours to optimize this game with care and an eye for detail.

Especially when other publishers don’t do any of this (EA), I’m of the opinion that we’re way better off praising the effort rather than slamming them because it doesn’t add up to a late 2020 home console or because the art style isn’t your thing.

Re: Nintendo Switch Black Friday 2020 Best Deals - Console Bundles, Games, Micro SD Cards And More

aSmilingMan

I feel like the Black Friday deals are never very good for Nintendo products... oh well.

And crowd, if you don’t do this yet, I strongly recommend checking out dekudeals.com. They track sales across all vendors (at least in the US) and you get to see how good the discount is by comparing with previous sales. Unless it’s launch title I really want, I’m almost always able to get my games at their historic lows. I’m not sponsored by them in any way. I just use their site a lot.

Re: The First Review For Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Is Now In

aSmilingMan

@Hylian_Greaves I've been reading a lot about the game, tried the demo and couldn't get into it. The genre just never appealed to me, even though I love Zelda and its lore.

Something about how you wrote this post got me interested again. I think I need to dial up the difficulty and see it as a challenge, rather than as an easily-kill-everything-that-moves game. Thank you!

Re: Feature: Best Nintendo Switch Flight Sim And Space Combat Games

Starlink isn't for everyone, but it was easily one of my favorite games to sit back and relax with. I really enjoyed flying in and out of planets completing missions and shooting baddies. Great gameplay!

I would certainly recommend the digital version though. I can't imagine having had the fun I did if I had to play with plastic toys hanging from my controller.

Re: Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm & Exercise Punches Its Way To Switch In December

I always thought it was weird that they never updated the original game or offered DLC. Now I understand the strategy: make more $$ with a fresh sale.

That being said, I do really enjoy the first one. While I wish it were just a quality of life update, I’m so tired of the songs and little issues with the first that I’ll be happy to get this. I especially love the new feature of removing some of the motions. The front and side stepping never captures well on the joycon.

Re: Review: A Short Hike - A Landmark Game For All Ages

aSmilingMan

A perfect little gem. I think the 10/10 is well deserved.

Given how fun it was, and how tight the controls were, I really hope they expand the world and make a longer experience with Claire. I would love having a 20-hour + game in this universe.

Re: pixelation, I played on the smallest pixel setting, which was more to my liking.

Also, a note to completionists: the game was updated for the Switch release and a different gold feather was added. This is not reflected on most guides online.

Re: Burnout Paradise Remastered Is Out On Switch Today, Here's The Launch Trailer

aSmilingMan

I know lots are complaining about the price and, well, $50 is steep. That being said, it does seem like they're listening. It's a full Switch port, 60fps, all included DLC and no microtransactions shenanigans. Seems like the arcade racer I was waiting for on the Switch. I don't like the price tag, but do think it's worth it given how much I like the genre. If this is not a genre you particularly love, seems like a wait-till-discount proposition.

Re: Still On The Fence About Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair? Now's The Time To Strike

aSmilingMan

I know it’s not for everyone, but personally I had a ton of fun with this game. The combination of the overworld puzzles, colorful pretty visuals, uplifting soundtrack and challenging impossible lair level made this one of my favorite 2D platformers.

I thought it was very similar to DK:TF, which I loved too. However, the impossible lair level raised the bar and created one of the platforming levels I most enjoyed getting destroyed by until I beat it.

Re: Talking Point: What Does That New ESRB Loot Box Warning Actually Mean?

aSmilingMan

I’m of the opinion that if they choose to add microtransactions or lootboxes after ratings they should be forced to release a new SKU and game. I think rating agencies should block the game from being sold if changed in this way.

Movies that have new, previously censored, scenes added to DVD releases need to do it. I don’t see why standards should be more lax with games.

Personally I can’t stand them. Stricter policy would keep publishers from engaging in Activision-like shenanigans and protect us gamers who can’t return a game we bought that was fundamentally altered.

Re: Yooka-Laylee And The Impossible Lair Update Makes The Final Stage Easier To Beat

aSmilingMan

For those who haven't yet tried this game, I think it's a really good fit if you like the Donkey Kong Country games. While some parts are punishing, the controls are tight enough that with enough practice you will get through it. Also, the visuals are stunning and the soundtrack is one of my favorite in any game. Also, the little puzzles in the overworld are a fun pallette cleanser in between levels.

I like these quality of life improvements in the game. Making the golden try easier to try and breaking the impossible lair into parts seem like great simple additions.

Re: Shantae And The Seven Sirens Sets Course For Switch This May, New Details Revealed

@KingBowser86 I'm with you on keeping 2D, they know how to do it well and they're tiny.
I think trying for 3D could easily backfire. There's too much to get wrong and polish in 3D. I'm happy to leave that to the major studios. Nintendo took forever to build Odyssey with all its transformations, and they're Nintendo! I liked Playtonic's Yooka Laylee, but they got crushed in reviews for the 3D game - even though the game was good, with polish and made by former Rare devs.

Re: Nintendo To Be Awarded Over $450,000 In Court Win Against Unofficial Mario Kart Service

aSmilingMan

The Mari Kart experience was the most enjoyable entertainment I ever paid for. My wife and I looked far and wide for anything Nintendo we could do in Japan, and there was nothing – absolutely zero – other than this and a Mario themed bar, which we went to right after the kart tour.

Nintendo is right to want some compensation for improper use of their IP. However, to block what is in my view amazing Mario Kart advertising, without offering a licensing deal or a similar service, is a disservice to fans of the brand.

I will miss Mari Kart.
