Nintendo has shared a list of the top 30 most-downloaded games on the Nintendo eShop for October 2019.
As you can see for yourself below, top spot has been taken by the world-dominating Fortnite, with its very low price point of free enticing a mighty number of Switch owners once again this month. Second place has been snapped up by everyone's favourite pesky goose, and Luigi's managed to sneak into the top three despite the game only being available on the very last day of the month.
This list comes from the Nintendo Switch news channel, distributed specifically to users in North America. It notes that the ranking is "based on Nintendo eShop unit sales", which includes games of all prices (even if they're free to download) but discounts demos.
Here's the full list:
1. Fortnite
2. Untitled Goose Game
3. Luigi's Mansion 3
4. Minecraft
5. Overwatch: Legendary Edition
6. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
7. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

More Castle Crashers!
I see that the 9 cent sale of Revenge of the Bird King really made an impression.
Mario kart 8 is stil tenaciously holding on.
I see why Fortnite is on top. It's massive popularity, the affordability of the Switch in itself, being able to play on the go with controllers, and of course, it's free. Plus, the Chapter 2 update was huge, definitely brought more people to the game with everything changed.
Who is still buying minecraft?
What I'm most surprised about is Breath of the Wild still ranking in at #6. Of course it's about as 'evergreen' as it gets, and I doubt it will ever leave the top 40. But to beat out Smash and MK8U this far into the Switch's lifespan is pretty mind blowing.
Really surprised Astral Chain didn’t make the cut!
Wow. A Hat in Time got buried. Guess that could be because the physical releases the following month.
I am a bit surprised that Super Mario Odyssey did not make this list. It really says a lot about the quality (and quantity) of content being released on the Switch that a main line Mario title misses top 30.
I am also surprised that Hollow Knight is not somewhere on top of this list...but that may just be a personal preference.
@Normendo well noted. What a time to be a gamer!
@Woomy_NNYes It's also not a great port. I was going to pick it up, but I looked at some videos online and it just looks and runs very poorly. Especially when compared to Super Lucky's Tale.
Good for Goose Game... Zelda BOTW at #6 is impressive.
@gamer89 This list has a Day 1 AAA first party game showing up at #6. Its pretty surprising to me personally that a MARIO game that came out months later missed this list. Not to mention the other first party games that are shown here as well....
@Desrever and Link’s Awakening, which was only 2 weeks old when this month started...
Witcher 3 is way too low... May it be because the physical edition is so freaking good? Or it just didn't sell that well?
Glad to see Overwatch on there. It's a fun game. And the fact that the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Trilogy is STILL selling is proof that we need Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. Come on, Namco. We need it.
@the_beaver
Probably because you can't play the digital version without having enough storage to download it.
In other words, you need a microSD card to play Switcher 3 digitally.
@gamer89 It kind of sucks because those are the games that hardcore gamers are looking for. I mean for games like Devil May Cry to sell like crazy and Astral Chain in it's infancy. Brand recognition is just as big as the quality of the actual game now a days.
I mean I know they are different genres but Pokemon Sword and Shield will most likely not impress people (visuals, gameplay, and overall aesthetic) like Astral Chain does. However, we all know Pokemon will blow Astral Chain out of the water (in sales) because it's pokemon. Hopefully Bayonetta 3 will be able to provide the recognition and funds for a second Astral Chain.
@Desrever yeah I was like wait did my eyes just deceive me or did I read it right? and on top it is ON TOP of Awakening... people really like topless Link I guess XD
That Bandai Namco sale really pushed sales of their titles, DB FighterZ especially.
A game that costs nothing is at the top of the list?! I never expected that!
Free to play games should be a separate list... Tons of people will download them just to see how they are because there is no commitment. It's not remotely fair or accurate to have them on the same list as real games.
Wow. No Super Mario Odyssey. I am guessing Breath of the Wild will catch up to it in sales at some point.
@hayesdude clearly, lotsa people. It has regained a lot of popularity lately.
I’m real proud of Anodyne!! What a fun little game
@graysoncharles Being exactly the same? Yes it would, but it would be a bad game. Now if they changed it so content was unlocked via progression in game, rather than micro-transaction purchases, at 20 dollars it would be an amazing deal!
I don't respect f2p games. But that aside, they shouldn't be measured in the same way as paid titles.
No Hollow Knight? At $15 it's the best value on the Switch and should be on this list every month.
So happy to see Dragon Quest XI S on the list!
Untitled Goose Game is definitely game of the year for sure especially for UK.
@Heavyarms55 I understand your sentiment, but excluding f2p titles would not make the list fair. You would still have full price games competing with cgeap/heavily discounted games which is equally unfair in my opinion.
Wow, Overwatch in 5th place.
I guess people don't care about controversy that much in the end.
@sheriff agreed best game ever!
@Zimon yup. At the end of the day all companies are corrupt
@retro_player_22 personally I found my friend pedro and griselda waaay better considering they can be played for more than 5 hours
