WayForward has revealed that Shantae and the Seven Sirens, the fifth entry in the Shantae series, will launch on Nintendo Switch on 28th May.
The expansive quest, which contains new locales, friends, enemies, and transformations, is expected to launch for $29.99. It's said to be packed with "multiple towns and more labyrinths than ever before", combining the most popular elements from past Shantae titles into the Half-Genie hero's "biggest outing to date". Ooer.
A new trailer has been released, which you can watch up above, and we also have a description and feature list straight from WayForward itself. Check it out.
The excitement begins when Shantae visits a tropical paradise where she befriends new Half-Genie allies, but things quickly go awry as she discovers that sinister secrets are stirring beneath the island's surface! As Shantae gets wrapped up in the island's mysteries, she'll use all-new dance abilities and instant-transformation Fusion Magic to explore the nonlinear, interconnected world and battle an assortment of diabolical foes...not the least of which are the enigmatic Seven Sirens!

Looks solid! This is definitely one to get right on top of playing.
Just as soon as the physical copy arrives, that is.
Really wish they'd freshen up this series more.
Can't really go wrong with Shantae. Should be a fun time.
Wow, May would be an awesome month
Really wish they would release every game on Switch. I want to play them in order.
@AnnoyingFrenzy most of them are in the e shop and 3DS shops.
Love Shantae and this looks great, but 30$ is too much.
@AnnoyingFrenzy Me too. I have every game but the Switch spoiled me into thinking every game should stream to my TV so working through my handheld backlog isn't a very pressing concern. (It doesn't help that my Switch backlog is as large as it is and I will never run out of games even if I ignore every other system I own.)
@NoNoseNosferatu I get that I can piecemeal them from different platforms, but my wish is that they put 'em all on switch. They don't have to, but it would be nice if they did.
@mesome713 Just stop with your nonsense. I’ve seen your posts; with you completely lapping up the Big N’s announcements, spitting all over Platinum Games, disparaging beloved tried and true classics and acting incredibly hostile to certain people and their countries of origin.
That’s very loathsome and frankly duplicitous behavior to be honest!
@AnnoyingFrenzy oh, a Shantae collection would be incredible, no doubt.
YES
I might double-dip on this physically and digitally, if there's a big gap in release better the two versions.
I absolutely love these games; from their joyous soundtracks, clever writing, adorable characters and innovative metroidvania play style mechanics, this series is one of the best of its kind. Can’t wait to play it!
I...I don't care if it wasn't in the mini Direct, I'm not giving up, no matter how much it hurts! #shantaeforsmash
@AnnoyingFrenzy Yep, I was just about to say: can we please get Risky's Revenge on Switch! It's already on iOS, PS4 and Wii U for crying out loud. I'm literally waiting to buy all of the others until that one comes out. And no, I don't want to bust out my Wii U or 3DS and buy it, only to find it come to Switch the next week.
@geox30
30$ is about low Average for this type and quality of game, I remember Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night being like 35 to 40$ when that came out.
@Ralizah I figured you'd be pumped for this 😉
@NintendoByNature I've been waiting for a good Shantae game to release since Pirate's Curse in 2014.
I.
am.
here for it!
I've just bought the first (game boy color !) and second installment (DSiware !) on my 3DS before, I don't know, they vanish from the store, or something.
I really like this series, it's a great platformer !
@mesome713
Freshen up?
The fourth entry was completely different from the rest of the series, so I really don't know what you're talking about.
It's like as if the new Metroid were to become a Mario Land.
I’m hoping it’s more like Pirate’s Curse. The last one was a big step back for the series in my opinion.
@Bobobiwan Be sure to grab Pirate's Curse on 3DS or Switch at some point. It's arguably the best game in the series.
@Anthracks This one is explicitly going back to the dungeons and non-linear exploration of previous games. The visual style should be the only aspect reminiscent of Half-Genie Hero.
@Ralizah i know you have! Every time there's a direct or nindies I'm rootin for shantae to be talked about so you can finally get your info lol
Been awaiting news on this forever. I was pretty turned off to it after the atrocious opening cutscene reveal, but this is looking better now. Although I'm not a fan of the 1/2 Genie Hero art style, I am happy to hear this game incorporates more old school Shantae mechanics like an interconnected world!
Good thing the physical version is confirmed right off the bat. It's a buy from me, I expect a nice edition with goodies like they did with the 4th entry.
Day 1! That's gonna be an expensive couple days though between this, Xenoblade, Bioshock, and TLOUP2
Pirates Curse was one of my favourite games on Wii U while Half Genie Hero one of my biggest disappointments. I'm willing to give the series another go though but I'll be waiting for reviews.
Nintendo switch will go down as the best console/handheld ever created by Nintendo if they support it for the next three years starting from January of this year.
Very hyped gameplay wise, but I have to wonder if they fixed the italian translation.
Given I can play the game in english, but I find hard to fully support a game with an official italian translation where every single line is wrong... (At least that was the case for 1/2 Genie Hero, a comical embarassing mess that shouldn't be in such a beautiful serie >.<).
Looks like another solid game for the series. Day 1
Finally! I've been eagerly awaiting this since it was announced.
Sold!
Finally some news on this, the one game I was most looking forward to this year and physical confirmed (my main wish) so double good news.
The OP is still ugh (because Trigger)but the rest of the game looks fab from the little I've seen.
I also echo what others have said, would love to see the remaining games on Switch in a collection or standalone. Come on Limited Run...
@GoldenSunRM Trust me, the new Metroid will be nothing like the previous one. People will complain about all the changes and whine how if it ain't broke don't fix it.
Just tired of games playing it safe and not spicing it up like Nintendo does.
This has just reminded me, I still need to finish half genie hero.
Bought the first one on 3ds specifically for the mod that allowed you to play any gba game that I had on my SD card(at the time) picked up pirates curse just as a gag for what the first one did for me, was quite surprised on the gameplay, been a fan ever since. Getting this one too.
Why does it cost so much more than the previous games, despite not looking any better than the last one?
@KingBowser86 You are not alone, for I stand with you! #ShantaeForSmash
Limited Run has really been stepping up this gen. I have heard some horror stories with them but thankfully i haven't encountered any issues...yet
Getting burned out on shantae personally. I'll buy it eventually but certainly not day one.
Can't go wrong with more Shantae; however, after this game they really need to evolve this series and expand her games from this 2D offering. Heck maybe time to stray away from the mobile flashy looks and start going the 2.5D route.
@retro_player_22 The 2.5D in DuckTales Remastered and Half-Genie Hero was not well-received. It was cumbersome in DTR but absolutely a hitbox nuisance in HGH. Mega Man 11 was hurt by 2.5D, as well.
This time around, 2D makes sense since it'll be on mobile. I'm a bit dismayed to see the goofy-looking HGH sprites back for the main cast, but WF is a small studio and there's a metric ton of new artwork otherwise!
As for 3D...who knows? Seems like the extra maneuverability of the transformations and fetchquesting would work wonders in that format.
Awesome to see! I loved the Pirate's Curse but thought 1/2 Genie Hero was only decent. Glad they seem to be going back to the infrastructure of the older titles and adding new elements like cut-scenes and collectible cards! Will 100% be picking this up, hopefully the physical release won't be too far after the digital
Well, this will certainly be a day one purchase for me. I also will echo my friends above! #ShantaeForSmash
Snore. Last one got dull. It's like the 5th in the series - isn't it time they went 3D - take some chances Wayforward.
Ok, ready to pre-order, only to wait.
And...
Shantae for Smash!!
Oh wait...
Someone mentioned earlier, he he, but, it is ok, again, Shantae for Smash!!! ^.^
Alright! I've been waiting for this, my next date with Shantae is on May 28th. Good stuff!
I hope there's a difficulty setting or at least less spikes and pitfalls this time. Those spikes make me want to go out and strangle people!
@KingBowser86 Despite what I said, look on the bright side. We might get some idea what Fighter #7 will be around June when the Arms character releases.
It's no guarantee but it's something to hope for.
Is limited run doing just the collector's edition or the regular version as well? I hope the regular physical copy isnt done by them. Anytime I see limited run doing the physical release I die a little inside. Im mostly dead at this point.
@KingBowser86 I'm with you on keeping 2D, they know how to do it well and they're tiny.
I think trying for 3D could easily backfire. There's too much to get wrong and polish in 3D. I'm happy to leave that to the major studios. Nintendo took forever to build Odyssey with all its transformations, and they're Nintendo! I liked Playtonic's Yooka Laylee, but they got crushed in reviews for the 3D game - even though the game was good, with polish and made by former Rare devs.
@aSmilingMan True, Odyssey had an absurd amount of polish and applied lessons learned. But then again, if WF stayed on the safe side ala Super Lucky's Tail, it might be just fine.
The real trick would be giving Shantae a double-jump where she's never had an innate one before. I think maybe modifying the twirling leap from the GBC Fighter's Gear (time for Plot Magic and or MacGuffins!) would do the trick, if HGH didn't reboot the previous games completely.
@KingBowser86 fair points. I would love to see the double jump! It can add such richness to a game. I'm currently playing Ori (I know, a little late to the party) and boy do I love the mechanics. While the controls are not as tight as Celeste, it's just so bafflingly gorgeous!
@aSmilingMan I really wanted to play Ori beyond the demo, but the hitboxes, graphics, and controls were just way too loose! For all I smack around the Shantae series for at times tedious-to-outright-unfair enemy placements and spawning, I never have to worry about it being as tight as any first-party Nintendo platformer.
@KingBowser86 ooh, I'd still give it a try. There's a little adaptation to the looseness, but it is rewarding. It's tight enough that it doesn't feel unfair while being fluid enough that you get to enjoy the gorgeous visuals.
