We really liked Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. Playtonic dropped the full-3D approach of the original for a purer 2.5D look, and, in our book, came up with something of a spiritual successor to the Donkey Kong Country series (yes, we know that series is ongoing, but this was made by the many of the original team members).
We awarded the title an impressive 9/10 in our review, stating that "Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a fantastic sophomore effort that pays tribute to Rare's past and establishes Playtonic as one of the UK's most exciting studios".
If you've for some reason decided against buying the game up to this point, then you might be interested to learn that it's currently on sale with 33% off the normal price. If you're in the UK, that's £16.74, down from £24.99. European buyers can get it for 20.09 € (instead of the usual 29.99 €). UPDATE: It's also 33% off in North America and Japan.

It is a really good platformer. I bought it physically when it was on sale and I have had a good time with it. 😊
And of course, you can't forget to mention the demo! It's a pretty generous demo that lets you play through four full levels, including the reverse-version of a single level.
Does the game get progressively more exciting? I tried the demo, and I hate to say that it bored me to death despite loving 2D platformers (on the other hand, I love the first Yooka Laylee even though I've heard so much bad about it... am I just a difficult person? xD)
I really like some of the gimmicks they brought into this one, like having the final level available straight away and having to save Laylee once you're hit like Baby Mario in Yoshi's Island. I still need to finish the game.
I really felt like this game should have been 1080p docked on Switch. It just doesn't look good imo
Rather unusual for a particular on-sale game to get it's own article. Is this a paid ad on behalf of Playtonic?
But yes, everyone should support the Yooka-Laylee series. Fun games from a great and talented team.
@GRW810 I was thinking the same thing just didn't say it. It's been on sale plenty of times already too.
@danemord First game was ok but it did not scratch that 3d platformer pitch for me. The world's were just too big and making them bigger didn't help. Not I'm not a fan of 2d Mario but this, DKC/R, and the last 2 Rayman games are totally my style of 2d games.
If the first level didn't win you over then there's really no point. I knew by the first level this game was far better then their last for me anyways.
Is this game really good or not? Didnt appeal to me, but am kinda tempted. Is it 2player or only single player
Brilliant game! Honestly, I enjoyed more than Tropical Freeze (it was way too similar to the previous one, imo...), but less than Returns.
The Zelda-like overworld was such an amazing concept.
It can be as cheap as it wants it’s not going to make the game any better
@danemord no I felt the same. It’s a bland game
Thirty-three percent?
@Not_Soos
I played the demo and I'm sure it's a really good game on it's own right, but the 90's 2D platformer nostalgia doesn't appeal to me. I'd rather have Banjo Kazooie over Donkey Kong Country any day of the week.
That is, of course, my opinion alone.
Such an underrated gem, I far preferred this to Tropical Freeze and some of the other Switch 2D platformers like Yoshi's Crafted World.
@GRW810 @Spoony_Tech If it were a paid ad, we'd have to say so. We're aware that a lot of people were on the fence with the game when it first launched and haven't picked it up - hence the post. It's one of our favourite titles, so surely us bringing it to the attention of more players is a good thing?
@danemord It's okay... it gets progressively harder, but I found that was mostly due to the spongy controls. The overworld stuff is just tedious. Overall I'd wait until it's cheaper still.
@Noble_Haltmann hi, sorry I haven't replied. I've been very busy. I'll get back to you when I can. It was after visiting their website (Playtonic) I realised I had to give this game a shot. After reading the people creating it, leading back to banjo kazooie I knew I had to get it. I actually like Yooka Laylee more than banjo kazooie. Be warned, I know others who have played it, not enjoying it. But at that price you can't go wrong. I strongly recommend this game to all platformer fans, but check out the demo if you have your doubts. Beautiful game 👍
@AlexSora89 I don't really know how to respond to this. Quick, think of a Gravity Falls reference... uh... NONSPECIFIC EXCUSE! **makes a break for it**
Impossible Lair is a solid 2D platformer though, I definitely recommend it if you haven't played it!
Meh, got Yooka for $7 and impossible lair for $15 at GreenManGaming on PC last month
They just "OK" at best. Gad I did not pay full price.
When I first read the headline I was expecting something juicy like 80% off or something, for there to be an article about it. 33% off is pretty meh, barely cheaper than what you can find it for physically.
I've played about 10 levels and thought it was 'meh'.
Or you get the physical version for 15.85 on base.com
Got this for £13.99 at Argos! Great game.
@cubbienathan It's fuzzy as heck undocked too. Really muddy and blurry in handheld.
I feel they need to go back and work on an update for visually clarity. It not at its best on Switch, and small team of not, it's a million miles from the clarity of DKC TF's visuals and I'm sure it could be closer.
Great game from gameplay pov, but I wish I had a PS4 for this one as the art is badly impaired on our humble handheld.
I like the demo, but something stopped me from buying it. Do you have to be familiar with the original game in order to enjoy this sequel? I saw characters and obvious situations I knew nothing about. I would have considered the first game, but some of the stuff I read about it was a deal breaker for me.
Cheapest country South Africa <£15 ☺
What's with all the comments knocking Tropical Freeze?
I wanted to like it but found it extremely boring.
@Kabloop This sounds really important to you. Do you need a tissue?
Good game but better then Tropical Freeze! Don't be silly people.
I know it’s not for everyone, but personally I had a ton of fun with this game. The combination of the overworld puzzles, colorful pretty visuals, uplifting soundtrack and challenging impossible lair level made this one of my favorite 2D platformers.
I thought it was very similar to DK:TF, which I loved too. However, the impossible lair level raised the bar and created one of the platforming levels I most enjoyed getting destroyed by until I beat it.
@danemord, nope same. I'm going to finish this game because I bought it. That sums up how I feel about it.
Great game, but not as good as Tropical Freeze.
If you enjoy Donkey Kong or platformers in general, you should definitely check this out.
I bought this when the cartridge went on sale for $10 shortly after release. I played a little, but it didn’t grab me. I’ll go back to it at some point.
Brilliant game!!! Best 2D platformer since SNES DKC trilogy
But the impossible lair is tediously difficult....😫😫😫
@the_beaver Tropical Freeze was beautifully made with stellar graphics but I agree, it was pretty repetitive of DKC returns. DKC Returns is one of the best games ever.
This never interested me. It seemed more like a cheap Mario rip-off than anything. But, the positive reviews in this article are making me contemplate it. 🤷♂️
@eaglesfly76 Tropical Freeze was awesome, but easily the worst in the DKC series. It was unoriginal and short, and the final boss was SO tedious. Then again, the game was not bad either. 6/10 for me.
@Apportal_SMM2 DKCTF gets a 10/10 from me. To each his own, but it is widely known as the best in the series.
@eaglesfly76 opinions right? I didn’t mean to say I hated it as well, because I still enjoyed 100% it, but I think the other games were better. 😀
@Apportal_SMM2 Absolutely, I totally respect a different opinion. Seems you do too, which is cool.
