It could (I stress "could") be a PS1 Final Fantasy VII port onto Wii U, with Final Fantasy VII's remake coming to the NX in 2016 (due to both hardware limitations and first exclusivity to Sony). Is it coincidental that the remake is out for PS4 today and that the announcement is tomorrow? Plus, Nintendo's relationship with Square has strengthened some more with the Dragon Quest games coming to 3DS. Not to mention the elephant in the room, Cloud being announced for Smash 4 and all...
@Ralizah Although it should be noted that these characters will be able to be ported over to the Wii U version. However, the player must own both versions of the game as the new characters are unlocked exclusively on the 3DS counterpart!
@BulbasaurusRex Thanks, and a great point about the held items - there was a lot that these games introduced (I've cheekily given it a mention)!
As mentioned, as great as HG & SS are, they just don't replicate the magic that the originals do for me (I've recently played through both). And you must've been fortunate, my dial-up was awful back then and I just didn't have the knowhow about the confines of the internet as a kid!
I've always said it - Gen II is hands down the BEST generation to date. It had everything: good Pokemon design, a great story, both Johto and Kanto regions to explore, a first for animated sprites and new Pokemon types, a day and night feature, a mobile phone, and above all else kept its core mechanics fun and challenging without becoming too complex and overwhelming.
I'm all for competitive online battling and all (I've played every gen to date), but it's sad to know that it's unlikely that any upcoming handheld Pokemon game will be overshadowed by its competitive online meta-game.
Which character out of Nintendo's vast array of franchises do you wish you could also play the voice of (excluding Link), whether they already have a voice or not? Ganondorf? Kirby? Fox McCloud?!
Awesome news. With Ryu out of the equation (thank you Nintendo, btw), Knuckles and Bomberman are the other two of my three most-wanted, but I guess that's pushing it in terms of third-party characters. I'm grateful as is with Ryu!
If we're talking Nintendo specifically, I believe King K. Rool is an addition to the roster that logically fits for a multitude of reasons. I'd love to see characters representing a wider variety of franchises too, such as Black Shadow/Blood Falcon from F-Zero - or bring back Wolf from Starfox but with a completely revised moveset. Sceptile would also work as it bridges the gap between Charizard and Greninja due to being a third-gen grass starter, but we already have too many Pokés!
While it's awesome we get frequent Directs from Nintendo, it can lead to some reverse effects such as Nintendo's E3 presentation feeling somewhat scarce.
What's more, the leaks over the past week haven't helped either. If Hyrule Warriors Legends wasn't leaked, and if the Smash Bros. direct was some how integrated within the E3 presentation instead of last Sunday (and wasn't leaked too!), they could've yielded a completely different overall reaction.
Personally, Star Fox Zero, Super Mario Maker, and Mario Tennis Ultra Smash were the only interesting things for me (Xenoblade Chronicles X too but we've already heard a lot about it). Otherwise, it certainly does feel like the year of the spin-off.
On the other hand, we still have great content that's just arrived (and upcoming) in Smash, as well as Zelda U! It's not all bad when you think about everything that's available and forthcoming on the Wii U and 3DS...
@ReshiramZekrom I think you're taking the words "side kick" as a literal move, whereas I believe he's referring to the term 'sidekick' as in companion. So in that case, he'd be right to say Donkey Kong!
YES!! PLEASE!! I've been quite vocal about Ryu as a third party character, alongside Bomberman and Knuckles.
Obviously, Nintendo characters should take priority, but if third parties are being considered, you need the icon of fighting games! Especially as Mega Man (another Capcom mascot) is already in the game...
And it's an easy and effective move-set!
B = Hadouken Side B = Hurricane Kick Up B = Shoryuken Down B = Counter/Throw Final Smash = Super/Mega Hadouken
@Fazermint Try charging the hammer with Kirby, then jump (while charging) and let go just before entering the opposition's mouth. It usually works for me after seeing a prominent white sparkle before entering the inhaling character.
@RaiRiggs Understood, but surely the slots would be removed if there's no need for them? Whether the panels mean anything or not, it's also worth mentioning that creating one fighter based off the entire fan-base's requests seems farfetched, so accommodating more than one suggestion is a little more probable. Ah well, it's been a helluva day!
@RaiRiggs If you look via desktop/laptop, the square slots can clearly be seen (it's not just empty space). However, as mentioned, this could simply be to preserve the rule of having nine slots per carousel slider. By no means is it concrete evidence for new characters, but it's not impossible that there could be more than one character from the Fighter Ballot. It's all speculation!
@Jayvir Very true, but if all these slots are indeed meant for more than one new character, then perhaps one of these third-party characters could be more of a possibility! But yes, if there's only one allocation, it should be dedicated to a well-established Nintendo character.
@warvad I was hoping that the nature of the way this article was written would convey that these extra slots aren't necessarily extra characters, with the use of words such as "suggests" and "if" etc. It's just a pointer for consideration, not clickbait!
Knuckles, Bomberman, or Ryu, anyone? Their move-sets are easily imaginable!
Or if Nintendo-based only, what about another final evolution starter from Pokemon to bridge the gap between 1st and 6th gen? Someone like Sceptile - it would make sense too with the recent ORAS games, as well as it completing the three types of starter Pokemon!

Re: A 'Big' Nintendo Announcement is Coming on Monday
@Grumblevolcano Gotcha, well something along those lines! Thanks for clearing that up. Guess it's Minecraft for Wii U...
Re: Minecraft Finally Digs Its Way Onto the Wii U eShop on 17th December
I hope this wasn't the big announcement from a selfish point of view.
Also - "Nintendo and Mojang are also collaborating on new content for Nintendo fans to be released at a future date"
So some sort of Nintendo/Minecraft mashup. Minecraft-styled Nintendo amiibo? Or Super Mario Maker 3D?

Super excited, literally jumped out of my chair. Although I wish we saw some actual HD footage - or was that it?
Re: Talking Point: Deep Breaths Are Needed as Highly Anticipated Nintendo Direct is Confirmed
Not going to hold my breath, but even if the direct tackles just one of these I'll be absolutely stoked:
Not really fussed about anything Star Fox Zero or Miitomo related at this point...

I'm all for it, not only because TP is my favourite TLoZ game but also because it would be a great filler/warm-up before Zelda U.

Knuckles, Bomberman, and Sceptile or Black Shadow (F-Zero)
