The Microsoft ownership of Rare can be a sore spot for Nintendo gamers, and the announcement of Rare Replay for Xbox One will sting. Incorporating some games previously available as downloads but many that haven't been, it's a compilation of 30 Rare classics that'll sell for $30 from 4th August.
Games highlighted as part of the collection include RC Pro-Am, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Battletoads and more. Of course, no Rare games utilising Nintendo IP are included, while the licensing issues around GoldenEye 007 mean that it's also absent.
It's a good fit for Rare's 30th anniversary, though it'll be quite an adjustment for some to see a number of NES, SNES and Nintendo 64 classics on Xbox One.

Should be interesting how well these are ported.
Ouch.
Why is it sad face time ?
Its not like they are new games or anything. Everyone who really wants to playy all of these has plenty of ways to do so on way cheaper systems.
And honestly, the best of the bunch ARE the Nintendo licensed ones.
We have DKC, they have Banjo & Kazooie, i think were on somewhat equal terms here. The rest is just fluff
Ouch, makes me wonder if Banjo-Kazooie would be a fighter?
Recore made by MetroidPrime creators? Whats this about?
I was so done with Microsoft...but Im now buying an Xbone. Fallout 4 mods...Rare collection...HOLOLENS...FAKK
...
what a comeback...
The should release this on Wii U too. Most of the games are from Nintendo consoles.
They looked good. I'm pretty excited for this.
It's also nice to see Microsoft finally exploit the Rare name, something they should have done before they squandered away a lot of time and members from the original team.
Not impressed with Xbox though, Halo, Forza, Tomb Raider and that Fable Legends thing are new exclusives this year, the rest seems to be 2016, and then there is a retro rare compilation and backwards compatibility.
What's really new and exciting this year? Or do I not get it?
@SuperWiiU
Maybe you haven't heard the recent news, but all of those games are owned by Microsoft now.
Be interested to see how well this sells. I mean how many XBone owners are former NES SNES and N64 junkies? probably not a ton.
We live in a world where the "core gamer" says things like, "2D Sux" "Not 60 fps and non-1080 sux" and yada yada.
Don't think this is aimed at the right audience.
HERESY!!!!!
@MrGawain
"I watch EA, Ubi, and Microsoft partly to see what other people think is cool in the shooty/stabby genre, and because there's something wonderful at watching how cringeworthy their shows are. There is a certain schadenfreude in watching them talking about next gen tech when the monitors cut out.
E3 isn't just about games. It's about the ridiculousness of the games industry and how entertaining that is."
You obviously are not interested in the games they make, so no reason to ask other people to explain it to you.
Well there goes my hope for a announcement that Microsoft and Nintendo had worked out a way to allow Banjo Kazooie on Virtual console where it belongs...
They were hinting so much at a new Banjo game, and instead we get this? I was ALMOST ready to get an Xbone, but this kinda ruined it for me.
Love that pause before that guy continued taking about this.
No personal attacks please.
-TW
Well, that means we'll never see Battletoads on a Nintendo console again, I guess. Sucks, but could be worse. At least Microsoft doesn't try to "improve" them...
@HollywoodHogan I agree. I think this will have very decent to good sales. Nintendo has lived off of nostalgia for years. The twenty-somethings of this generation grew up on the N64, so many of the games here will definitely appeal to them and that sense of nostalgia.
I've been wanting to play Jet Force Gemini for so long and I finally get to do it again with out having to rebuy a N64 and game. $30 for all those games is an awesome deal. MS show was pretty slow for the First hour a lot of boring shooters. Can't wait to see what Sony and Nintendo bring. The whole conference thing isn't very exciting and I'm glad Nintendo moved on to their digital events.
@XCWarrior Wouldn't the lack of people who have played it means that there's a bigger audience to sell it to? They have a better reason to buy it, since they've never played any of these games before.
This is disgusting, as a Nintendo fan this hurts but there's nothing really wrong with it.
I am now on that Xbox one train.. Definitely a must buy this year.
My goodness, the salt in here is palpable.
@moomoo
Looking at @XCWarrior 's profile, it seems he owns/owned Sony, Microsoft AND Nintendo hardware...
Maybe people like him who have played a bunch of consoles (yet who also own an Xbox One) would be interested in this game?
But although he obviously has played multiple consoles, he can't wrap his head around the fact that maybe there are Xbox owners who have gasp done the same thing, who would be interested in buying this game collection!
@Einherjar Banja-Kazooie/Tooie and Conker are infinitely better platformers than DK64, not to mention Blast Corp and Jet Force Gemini, which are definitely not fluff (especially the latter). Perfect Dark, on the other hand, doesn't compare to modern FPSs.
Xbox One got a bit more compelling for me, I won't lie. I'll still probably wait for a price drop.
No matter how you slice it, this is a steal. Finally MS doing something good with that Rare acquisition.
Somehow, this hurts...
As an ex Microsoft fan I say let them have them, because other then Halo, Microsoft sucks and has nothing. Seems like microsoft can only make shooters and steal Nintendo's past to get any attention. And to those who want a X1, take it from someone that had one, don't buy it, it's a piece of crap, if you need the pretty graphics machine, but a ps4, they are way better.
I thought I only needed a PS4 and Wii U but now I want an Xbone as well. Fudge...this E3 is incredible already!! WOWOWOW
@XCWarrior
Well, I can't tell You have a Xbox One and also grew up playing on those consoles you mentioned. I'm looking forward to this collection, BattleToads, Conkers Bad Fur day and so much more. I already have the DK Country games along with DK64 on VC, so I will have a nice collection of Rare games.
@Einherjar
I can't agree with ya that the rest of the games are Fluffs, but I understand you're opinion.
Another reason to own the Microsoft Xbox One.
None of this was enough to convince me to get an Xbone, but it was enough to make me mildly jealous. Gears 4 looks REALLY nice. And that Rare Replay collection is awesome.
Not too worried since I own every game in its original format but I'm happy for XB1 owners seeing as the set includes some amazing titles. Hopefully the Conker will be the superior N64 original and not that atrocious XBOX remake. Even though I prefer Nintendo, I have to applaud Microsoft for a pretty great showing. Sony will have a big uphill struggle to best what was shown for XB1. Nintendo already came out of the gate swinging on Sunday so I am super hyped for tomorrow.
This is honestly one the few interesting things Rare has done since Microsoft bought them.
Heh, Nice for rare for them to do that. If only the crowd was as enthusiastic for that because this may be doom for rare if no one buys this. If your chance Xbox people if you want rare to keep supporting em best do this otherwise it's back to nintendo for them....or worse.
@Project_Dolphin
I'm confused about what your point is.
I should check out the all-time best-seller lists for the X360/XB1/PS3/PS4 platforms to find out if there is a demographic interested in buying a collection of older games, many of which were once only available on Nintendo?
@GrailUK I was wondering the exact same thing. Stopped me dead in my tracks. I feel like one former worker from Retro Studios is with that developer so they can technically say that. That is all I can figure.
Oh I have a 360 though so maybe I'll- sees XBox One dang it, nevermind. Ah well, I have both Banjo games on XBLA, I'll live.
And here I thought I only needed my Wii U and PS4....
I'll probably have an XB1 on my shelf someday in the future as well.
And this is why Phil Spencer would have LOVED Banjo and Kazooie in smash.
Will it also be on Windows 10?
Wow. Just wow. The only decent facet of Microsoft is that they own some great IP'S from Rare and have a hook in a piece of gaming history. Then they go and ram the ENTIRE history of the the now dead Rareware on one release for only $30!? How much does that cheapen what name was left? That's like punching a naked corpse in the nuts in public ten years after you hung the victim.
I don't even own a XBOX One (or a 360 for that matter), but this collection sounds amazing and makes me want one. Most of these games I don't even own.
Obviously, no Nintendo IP branded Rare games will be there, but that GoldenEye 007 licensing issue sucks. Activision, of course...
@shonenjump86 My point is, those arent games i would buy an Xbox One for. Id get an N64 if i didnt had one already. The overall library of the console doesnt offer all that much else to make such a purchase reasonable.
@DESS-M-8
No, it's called realistically pricing 30-15 year old software at a palatable price. And almost half of the games on it are of no interest to most people, other than a curiosity to play with for a few minutes.
Nintendo charging $10 to play a 15 year old N64 game or $5 to play a 25 year old NES title. Now that is like punching someone in the nuts!
@Project_Dolphin
It is that hard. You still haven't explained what your point was.
How does looking at the all-time best-seller lists for the X360/XB1/PS3/PS4 platforms indicate whether or not people will buy this title?
It's cool, but the highlight of Microsoft's conference was undoubtedly the Holo Lens demo for Minecraft. That was very impressive. Also, the lack of CoD in their conference was interesting.
this hurts, I want to play so many of those games
@GrailUK not all but a few of retros original staff formed left Nintendo before prime 3 was a thing and formed a new studio under Microsoft. They have put more than a little spin on this for marketing.
@MetaSmasher You can on the Nintendo systems they released on.
Ugh... I got rid of my 360 years ago and wrote off Microsoft after not being happy with their business model (for example, making me pay for Xbox live to watch Netflix when everyone else doesn't) but this would make me want to get one. I love Banjo-Kazooie and if they said Jet Force Gemini was going to be included too then that might send me over the edge eventually... Bah, I don't know I just wish these were coming back to Nintendo. Then again, with a new Metroid and Xenoblade (and Yooka-Laylee) I won't give two craps about these oldies
Really looking forward to this Be great to play Blast Corps again in HD, and hopefully a couple of others like Jet Force Gemini too. And Battletoads of course
Sucks for those of you who don't own an Xbox One though.
Won't buy an Xbox 1 for this, so won't pretend to, but I think the big story isn't so much just Rare, it's 30 games for $30.
Ok, maybe some - or a lot - of them are filler, but it's Rare filler, so if even 5 are good that's a way better value than anything you'll get on VC buy a wide margin.
This is why Nintneod needs a subscription service - pay $5 or $10 per month, play all the VC games you want. Or at least a pricing structure that makes sense for old games, $1 NES, $2 SNES $3 N64.
This is really an Xbox story, not a Nintendo story.
@Project_Dolphin
It doesn't have to be a massive hit though. Its a collection of (some) classic older games at a budget price, which in all likelihood didn't cost a whole lot of money to produce. Nowhere once did I say this would be a massive seller for Xbox One. It wouldn't be a massive seller on the Wii U either. All I stated is that there is certainly a market for this title on a Microsoft console.
Why are you comparing this to big budget new releases? I think you are very confused here.
@TerrapinJess Jet Force Gemini is included.
People, this is just to lure old fans of those games to buy an Xbox One, nothing else. Team Dakota uses Project Spark to make Conker Big Reunion and to be honest, it just looks ugly. Even the port on Xbox Classic (the first Xbox) was horrible. I know that I sound like a fanboy, but sadly, the best port of Conker was on the N64. Yes, it had clunky graphic and no costumes like on the Xbox port, but as I said many times before "graphics are no important [for me] but storyline and gameplay". It was a blast and I loved every minute of this game. Sadly, I only rent the game and never bought it and nowadays, this game of the N64 is so rare and expensive, that you have to pay more than 200 bucks for the game only and for a complete set way beyond. But that doesn't change the fact, that I will now get myself an Xbox One only to get this game. I dislike Microsoft even so I was a fan before with the Xbox 360, but they lost my trust with all the things they came up in their presentation with the Xbox One and nothing will give this trust back. And seriously, Conker in Project Spark looks horrible... at least for me.
@ToxieDogg Not at all. I can live pretty well without it because it does not involve my life to a "can't live without it" situation.
@Mr_Zurkon - So says the guy w/ the Mr Zurkon avatar.
This will hurt...
Eh going to buy an Xbox one so i could care less about this sad news.
Cool, this is great for xbox owners, and the price is very good as well. Microsoft had a good conference today, especially with the announcement of backwards compatibility of xbox 360 games. Their conference definity increased my interest in the xbox one.
It's a very aggressive pricing point. It could have more repercussions across the industry.
I would love to play some of those games again, but I'm also not going to lose sleep over this or run out and buy an Xbone either......now for Fallout 4, maybe.
@GrailUK
Not really.
Nintendo is the only company around who charges an arm and a leg to buy their old games digitally.
Everyone else charges a fair price.
@faint Cheers for the info My heart sank.
Conker's Bad Fur Day, such a shame to see this gem make its way so casually into the Xbox. I wonder if this will decrease the N64 cartridges value.
@GLA Conker was released on the Xbox in a censored version with most of the multiplayer options removed back in 2005.
http://imageshack.com/f/212/conkerliveandreloadeddvob4.jpg
@GLA It probably won't have too much of an effect. Chrono Trigger and Earthbound still cost a lot to get on the SNES, even though there's VC releases for them.
@GLA
Nope.
Just as making Earthbound for SNES available on the VC hasn't lowered the price for a physical cart.
Someone shelling out $200 for a game cart isn't doing it because they just want to play the game. They are doing it because they are a collector and want to own the physical cartridge.
It's not exactly like WE were gonna be getting them, might as well see a release SOMEWHERE rather than nowhere.
Besides, I own an X1 so I'm jumpin in head first! And with backward compatibility for 360 games, I'm gonna be spending a lot more time with my X1
@SanderEvers
I got a whole bunch of Final Fantasy games on PSN for a decent price on sale and before that most were comparable to the VC or better prices.
@AyeHaley I picked up a used Xbox One for cheap a few months back and am looking forward to this pack. For me the Wii U is my system of choice, but I have the PS4 and Xbox One for their exclusives and deals like this. But some multi platform games are best on Wii U, like Lego games play best in multiplayer on Wii U so I grab those on Wii U alone.
So many people took the bait Microsoft tossed out. Sad to see that people are so easily to manipulate =(
I come to Nintendolife.com to read news about Xbox One games.
@CharleSketch In a way relative since all those Rare games were on Nintendo consoles and it is not that bad to hear what other companies do. It is not like we hear no stories about Sony as well.
@SetupDisk
Exactly.
I don't buy them, but I have seen the FF games on sale on PSN for like $2 each or less many times.
Meanwhile, gems like Urban Champion and Wrecking Crew remain $4.99 on the VC.
This is actually pretty cool. If I had an Xbone I'd def get it despite already having a lot of Rare games in cartridge form.
I'm happy for the Xbone owners and hope a lot of people buy it to honour the good work Rare made before Microsoft destroyed them!
It will be even better when it drops to $15 a year after release like sonics ultimate genesis collection. This is a pretty good deal already and a decent complement to the new games coming out on the XBone. I'm more surprised about how many people here seem to have forgotten that Microsoft has owned Rare for 10+ years now.
An Xbox one will now be joining my Wii U in my home theater!
Also congrats to Nintendo & Xbox this year it's been a great E3 so far, and congrats to capitalism and the freedom of competition.
@NowhereMan11 was playing Jet Force at the weekend again on my N64. That game is legendary, legendary, legendary. Massive with spectacular graphics, sound sound, levels and gameplay.
Unfairly criticised for being too hard and difficult to control. Reviewers and many gamers don't understand you hold R to access FPS mode to shoot in the heat of the action, and 3rd person for everything else. Can't get any easier than that!
The biggest thing that will hurt is if they don't acknowledge Nintendo's part. I saw the opening for Banjo Kazooie on the Xbox 360, and I was pissed off that they removed Nintendo (which is understandable), yet Microsoft's name was put in there, despite them not working on the original game. Some acknowledgement of a game's origins would be nice.
It's times like this I wish Nintendo had kept Rare even if they never made another game ever again... God I loved Rare.
@Zerodactyl yeah, but some of them aren't on VC and are expensive
@XCWarrior Well, when you think about it, the NES and SNES sold over 60 million... but only 20 million bought a Gamecube, less than 10 million have bought a Wii U so far, so I do think a number of people that owned those consoles have moved onto Sony and/or Microsoft. It's why I always think it's weird when people say new games from old IP should come to Nintendo as it's where all the fans are at. I think more NES users probably now have a PS4 than a Wii U.
And this marks the first time Microsoft has ever done anything to attract my attention. And rather tellingly, my reaction still doesn't amount to a whole lot more than a shrug of disbelief pertaining as to how much of a waste this is on a console that doesn't justify its own existence.
Oh hey! Microsoft noticed what they actually bought all those years ago!
Glad to see these games getting a new lease of life, regardless of where. It's not going to get me to buy an XB1 though.
Why sad face time? That sounds very parochial. Why not celebrate that others can now enjoy games that we grew up with, and that those games are being kept alive and in the public consciousness? I think it is great that the likes of Blast Corps are having another go at being appreciated.
If you are sad because they are not coming to Wii U then that is a different matter, but let us remember that Nintendo had a chance to buy Rare and did not do so. Of course they invested their money otherwise and gave us a lot of joy as a result. But let us not be sad that others are getting to enjoy some good games.
Personally, this gives me an excuse to dust off my XB1, which has seen very little gameplay (it's basically a Forza Horizon 2 machine) since I got it a Christmas. My Wii U on the other hand, is constantly in use and can now have a little break!
Hey that's great for xbox owners...honestly i dont know what took MS so long. I do wonder what pure xbox owner is going to jump at this...as I'm sure the people that would play these own them in some shape or form. Still convenience is worth something.
I hope Microsoft will allow Rare titles on Nintendo consoles again one day.There's even a slight chance that may happen since Microsoft's gaming division has never been profitable for them from what I've read.
Also, trolls who say that B&K and the DKC trilogy are the only worthwhile Rare games should be tarred and feathered, smh...
@SnuggleMon I agree with you about Conker, I prefer the original N64 version too. Fortunately, I'm lucky enough to still have my launch copy.
I'm still buying this set though, because there's other games on there such as Battletoads, Blast Corps and RC Pro AM that I'm interested in seeing in HD (and if the ports are any good) and it still sucks for other people who've been longtime fans of these games on previous Nintendo systems and would like to get this compilation but can't, because they don't have Xbox Ones.
This is Rare pretending they are relevant, when really, they aren't.
However, I am interested in their new Sea of Thieves game, though. Could be the break they need.
@TwilightAngel Hi, sorry to be pedantic but I've seen this comment half a dozen times here recently and it's driving me crazy. I know, I know, I need to get a life. 😅
Don't you mean to say "I couldn't care less." ?
Have seen so many people here writing "I could care less," and that really doesn't seem to be what you all mean, judging from the general tone of all of the posts I've read it in.
From another site:
"We won't charge you to play the games you already own," said a Microsoft representative on stage at E3.
A little jab at Nintendo there...
@RedDevilAde I think it was more towards Sony, what with PS Now and such. I can't see a jab working towards Nintendo, since they've had backwards compatibility with all Wii games day one.
I don't know why so many people are upset about this. Microsoft owns Rare's catalog of titles (sans the ones with Nintendo-owned characters), they can do with that catalog as they wish. Frankly, I'm shocked this hasn't happened much sooner than it is. If they had any kind of business sense than to just "stick it to Nintendo" (obviously evidenced when they thought they also bought Donkey Kong along with the Rare), they would have.
Also, I still don't get the number of people who think Xbox owners wouldn't be interested in this compilation. The twnety-to-thitysomething gamer grew up on the Nintendo 64 era - back when Nintendo still was a considerable force with high console sales. Most probably do have memories of these games, so playing them again would be of interest to them, especially at that low price. Are there a number of people from the PSOne or PS2/Original Xbox era who never played a Nintendo console? Of course. But I think there is a larger number who did growing up that gets forgotten about in this age of Call of Duty.
This will not be a huge blockbuster system seller. But it will be a nice, modest hit. And could even spur interest in new installments of said included franchises.
@moomoo @RedDevilAde It was probably mainly aimed at Sony. But it could apply to Nintendo in a small way, especially with Nintendo and it's Virtual Console service, recharging people an "upgrade fee" (warranted or not) for people who previously bought games on the Wii - even though that is optional as you could play from the Wii menu, but its still there and viewed as excessive by many... or making them buy the same game twice if they wanted it on the Wii U and 3DS since Nintendo lacks the unified account system. That has to be taken into consideration.
while it would be nice to have seen these games on the virtual console, I won't loose sleep over not having them.
This hurts so bad, just conkers bad fur day on its own is a mouth-watering prospect but 30 games! The only slight comfort is that it doesn't include goldeneye or diddy kong racing, otherwise I would have honestly had to buy an x-box.
WHy is this relevant on this website? Who cares about Xbox One games, like really...
Haha, where is the rumored Banjo threeie?! Because I don't see it!
So its 1 Dollar for each game. Sad times indeed!
This is probably the one safe move Rare could ever make in this day. They struggle with the xbox player base, like so many people said before, it's not an fps and it's not ea sports.
No MS console here. Might just buy the game anyway though, put it on a shelf, then fire up some, er, PC software to play the originals. Except for the 360 ones anyway.
Sea of thieves...The graphics look nice but otherwise I didn't see anything special. Still miles above the "Sports" nonsense!
Poor man's assassins creed.....
Ain't that the microsoft way. Lie about your console, go back on your word, launch it, check Nintendo's answer sheet and steal their trademarks. I don't care if it's legal, this is a weasel move right here.
@HollywoodHogan This, and part of that cost must be to lure more people to the XB1.
That said...it would be nice if we finally get a permanent price drop on the VC releases thanks to this being competition.
I'll do the same as I've done for games on consoles I never plan on owning, giving this as a suggestion to people who do.
You have to give Microsoft props for giving you 30 games for 30 bucks. Wish Nintendo had better pricing on their VC stuff and made it more available (more VC games in general and more stuff on 3DS).
@KirbyKirbyKirby Well being that Nintendo has shown Smash love for Sega, Capcom, and Konami while shafting Nintendo on all new releases, I'd say Banjo is still in the running 😒
This is an amazing compilation being offered at an amazing price. I just bought an N64 cartridge of Banjo-Tooie last month for $35. With this compilation, you get three Banjo games, Conker, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, two Viva Pinata games, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, and many, many more for just 30 bucks. I seriously wish I had more of a reason to get an Xbone, because I would scoop this up without batting an eyelid if I owned the console.
RC Pro-Am - I own this game, and personally playing it on an NES is the only way to fly. I also own that flying game from RARE as well. We would play that game like crazy. I mean Rareware made some nice hits on the NES. That is about it for there original-ism until Killer Instinct.
Perfect Dark - Again you really need to play this game on the N64. The N64 can only utilize the official controllers with the rumble feature as well as the storage card. Among the many unlockables featured in the game.
Only the N64 can utilize two controllers at one time. Two controllers that are shaped like guns, with indivisual rumble packs. OMGSH. Guess what??? That is not on X-bone.
Banjo-Kazooie in my opinion is really DKC but they dressed up as there own and left us with DK garbage. Rareware made the 3rd game for the X-box 360 and left us with garbage ( again ).
Conker's Bad Fur Day- Again can never get that same feeling on the N64. The X-box game was an dissapointing remake. While the X-box game did have an different setup and some extra parts it was just the same game with bad controls and an lame Call-Of-Duty.
Battletoads all I can say is that BT's had an hot female antagonist that was never utilized at all. Battletoads for the most part gave us the game teck see in DKC 1-3.
Rareware died when the company split after the leave from Nintendo. All of those hits are easy to purchase and find and come by for free as well.
If it is an download this is just pathetic and pointless to even buy this. Rareware under Microsoft control needs to just past away already. Until Rare just drops dead and gets sold to somebody else nothing good can come from them at all. Microsoft sale destroyed Rareware for life. Rareware story is probably even worst then the whole entire President Bush being elected caused 2001 to occur the way it did. They made the wrong choice.
Even so the same team that made perfect dark, along with Banjo all left the party at Rare. If anybody is left is more like an shell of the former company. I imagine the people at Rare right now are running back and forth naked, figuring out what to do.
Look at SEGA. SEGA released so much awesome follow ups to the original series. Why can't Rare be like that. Rare is like the unwanted foster child that never got any love or attention and went through a bad slave trade.
Sad part about Rareware is that they were living the dream we all have or had as game creators. Work with an famous Japanese company and get to make decision on products.
DKC would never exist without Rareware. Miyamoto even bashed Rareware games about the simplistic gameplay values. After that he used pre-rendering to make Yoshi-Story and did all kinds of things with the gameplay. I think that is where Rareware failed with DKC, and why DK64 is garbage. Because Nintendo wanted all kinds of gameplay values that was not featured on the SNES.
Another flame is about to be put out. Rareware has failed, long live Rareware.
Also the original X-box is garbage compared to an gamecube. I remember everybody calling the GCN an poor-mans system. But right now I could hook my GCN into an crappy flatscreen or 4K display and the damn thing still looks good and decent to play from the couch. If every Rareware game was made for the X-box was on the GCN it would have saved the company.
Right now people are playing GCN on the Wii and even Wii-U as I type this. That is how lame Rareware is for the move it made. X-box games have soo many glitches.
Took MS long enough!
A sequel to any one of those games would have been nice. Their pirate game is definitely not going to get me to run out and buy an XBone, but something like these would have.
I'll stick to waiting for Yooka Laylee.
These comments, lol.
The kids who grew up on Rare are now in their 20s and 30s. They have money.
They will buy the games they grew up on.
I'm not sure what's amazing here. I own these games already. How is this a big deal?
Cant wait to pick this up. Lol at the crybabies on this site. Ms had a great showing for me. Just wish they would have showed off Scalebound. Now time for Sonys show. Cant wait to see what Nintendo has to offer tomorrow.
Hey we may as well admit, if Nintendo were releasing these games they'd be $5 - $20 a pop, and staggered out over 4 years! Microsoft are passing up A LOT of potential income by releasing these for $30, so it's a fantastic deal for gamers. Enough to convince me to buy an Xbox One? Not yet, however I would definitely get one over a PS4. Microsoft are bringing the games way more than Sony IMO.
Oddly enough, I was never a huge Rare fan, but I did like a few games. Goldeneye and Battletoads were cool. Console shooters after Goldeneye were never my thing (prefer PC controls) and never got into 3D platformers in the 64 days. DK were fun, but never was that amazed by them. I don't think it sucks they are not on Nintendo, because they chose to let rare go, and they own the rights. Seems to be a good value. I read some comments about $ on Nintendo charging to much, but its all about what people are willing to pay. I buy a ton of them, but I am a fanboy as it were. I work for a company that our products cost more, but are customers want what we offer and we get as much $ as we can, because, well, we can. That is business. Nintendo is generally more profitable than not, so they kind of know what they are doing.
I really don't understand how a bunch of old rare games we already played on older nintendo consoles makes this announcement so awesome and make ppl want a Xbox one, seriously what the hell? !? Iol
I have said it before and I'll say it again: Nintendo passed a good opportunity on not buying Rare. They truly were what Pixar was to Disney. We could have had not only the potential of greater games on Nintendo systems but maybe been able to trounce Sony and MS on having even more family gamer appeal. MS really dropped the ball with Rare's potential. Too bad.
@Yorumi microsoft owned the majority percentage of rare and nintendo was in no position to reject microsoft decision to buy rare. think of ot this way, you and a buddy pitch in to get an xbone but you paid 60% and your buddy paid 40% so while you both own the system, you have a say on what to do and if you want full custody then you can and will, your buddy does not have a say. so in essence you are microsoft and your buddy is nintendo.
@luke88 I'm trying very hard not to say something i might regret. i'm really trying.
I'm buying a XBO for this. It was about time MS did something with Rare's great catalogue of games but I'm shocked it is all for just $30.
I can't wait to play Blast Corps again.
Microshaft once again continues to rib Nintendo with the Rare acquistion ('rib' as in the pro wrestling meaning of the term), this being the biggest rib yet. Other than having to be more responsible with my time and money, this seals the deal that I will never buy from Microshaft. Luckily I have all these games on my n64.
Most of Rare's 'best' (Even the founders) have moved onto other studios.
I actually doubt it sells.
fps fanboys only really care about the newest and best looking games, which they quickly sell once they'll been drained by all the dlc. Titanfall is already like $12. the madden fan boys are pretty much the same. that's basically the majority of the Xbone install base.
those gamers are a massive part of the US market but honestly do they really care about retro gaming?
Me and my buddy (XBone owner) Buddy: but Nintendo games are for kids that's why I got an Xbone). After hearing this news, Buddy:man I'm getting this for sure !! Me: what the..........
@brucelebnd It depends on their age. The average Xbox crowd is 10-19. I guess that's not very average... Games like Battle Toads, or games that aren't constantly supporting your attention, and have some guy online telling you how to play it...
I'm sure they'd rather put their money towards getting Oculus Rift. Yes, Oculus: for people who're too lazy to do the things they are simulating, like virtual golf or virtual soccer...
@ShoryukenKid If I were a mature adult, I'd reckon all these 'mature' titles were made for kids...
@Project_Dolphin If I can recall correctly, RARE did played a big part in the N64 sales in the west with Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. And if Rare was with Nintendo during the sixth generation and had similar output on the N64, the Gamecube could have had done a bit better in the West.
Why are so many people on here crying about this, yes Rare has gone downhill since being acquired by Microsoft, but this bundle is awesome! Mybe Nintendo should learn a thing or two from Microsoft about better prices on virtual console games.
@XCWarrior Lots of old Rare fans bought Xbox360 in release because Perfect Dark Zero and some of them are now also Xbox One owners because they want to play next Banjo or PD. That 1080p/60fps thing is not something that Xbox players like to talk about if it's not about Forza or Remake.
That's a really good price to get so many great classics. I hope that Nintendo at some points lowers the prices at Virtual Console.
@RegalSin Just tested Perfect Dark for Xbox One. That N64 dual wielding controller thing was awesome as younger but now i prefer Xbox version with better graphics, COD button mapping (needs to be set from options) and 8-player online multiplayer.
@DaemonSword The package is not even out and you talk about ripping Nintendo. How do you know, that those ports are good? Remember, we're talking about Microsoft and how horrible they go with game they don't make and use devs which are so horrible, that the whole gameplay and design is ruined completely. I mean, they made a new Conker game inside Project Spark... the result is devastating and on top of it episodic. Why do I have the feeling that this way of selling games will ruin the gaming industry?
@ToxieDogg I would kill to get a cheap complete version of Conker Bad Fur Day, but even the game itself would be enough for me. About the package, I fear that those games will be part of Project Spark, just like Conker and episodic. Microsoft will milk the fandom of those games like Killer Instinct and I will not support this. To me, this is not giving back something to the fans, but ignorant and money-hungry methods to lure people to Xbox One and pull their money out of the pockets. They should create a whole game with their own game engine instead with this poor "Little Big Planet for poor people" Project Spark.
This RARE replay announcement has cemented my decision to purchase a Xboxone, to go along with my Wii U.
I was leaning towards a ps4, but this announcement along with Xbox360 support has won me over.
Its gonna take more than a few old Rare ports to distract me from my WiiU & PS4
you just had to see this coming. I'm surprised it took so long. Talk about a jab at Nintendo. sad faces all around
@Royalblues the Denial is overwhelming. XboxOne owners are going to rejoice over these classics. it is a bummer for Nintendo fans and Nintendo.
Now; if Nintendo hadn't sold off Rare, you might have been seeing something like this on Wii U right about now—30 classic Rare games in one bundle for $30 is probably the best gaming bundle I've personally heard of—but you actually wouldn't, because Nintendo would never give you something like this, with this amount of content in one package, for less than the price of a regular game.
@Einherjar $30 for 30 Rare games in one package—there's nothing that even sniffs coming close to this on any of Nintendo's systems. You've got to give credit where it's due and it is most definitely due here.
@Kirk sadly you are right, couldn't ever see Nintendo giving so much value for such a low cost.
@Kirk I didnt mean tht its a bad deal, far far from it.
But its also not a system seller. The 3 "big" highlights, both Banjos and Perfect Dark, can also be gotten on a 360, which is infinitly cheaper then a One.
For everyone already owning the console, its a must have, no question.
But for everyone else, its not really worth it to get yourself such an overpriced and undersupported console.
As for the pricing itself: Obvious, seeing how the One turned into a shelf hogger. I talked with our local Electronics store about it. They havent sold a One for 3 Months now, and overall sales figures reflect that.
Microsoft needs to do something that might attract more pople and is banking on Rares good name and legacy.
Wow. Great compilation at a great price. Definite plus for the XB1 especially having the likes of Blast Corps, Banjo and Jet Force Gemini because the only way to play them is the N64 which looks awful on a modern TV
A lot of unnecessary hate coming from my fellow Nintendo fans in these comments. It's kind of sad how insistent a lot of you are that Rare is awful and garbage and all that, even when they do something that is as close to objectively great as you can get. I guess that's a coping mechanism for the fact that Nintendo no longer has Rare?
@Einherjar All I know is that I really don't think there's any way anyone can look at this and claim it's just not a brilliant deal and a great selection of games, without coming across like a bit of a defensive fanboy or something. There's 30 frikin full games there for $30 and a lot of them are like 20-60 hour type experiences, with single player and multi-player modes and whatever else. I mean they may not be your pick of best games of the bunch but titles like Cameo and Perfect Dark Zero are almost worthy of that $30 price alone imo, in terms of content and value for money—these aren't just throw away experiences or tiny downloadable mini-games or whatever. There really is no objectively reasonable way to look at this other than as a genuinely great thing and one hell of a bargain...
...unless you don't own an Xbox One, I guess, and you won't be able to benefit from such a great deal.
I'm actually really upset about this. But the only one to blame is nintendo. The stampler brothers came to nintendo first and asked them if they wanted to wholly buy Rare. Nintendo stupidly refused.
@Kirk Thats the point im trying to make:
For Xbox One owners its a treat. For everyone else its not a reason to cry, as the article tagline implies.
There are no exclusives and they are not overly pricey either. Sure, you cant beat 30 bucks. But Buying a 400 bucks console along with it JUST for these titles isnt worth it.
Thats all i wanted to say. Not that the pack itself is bad or anything, just that this is far from "sad face time".
@Einherjar If I were a Wii U owner I know I'd be feeling the hurt right about now. This isn't about whether it sells consoles, imo—it's just about what this bundle is, what it represents and how much fun people are going to have with it, and I know a lot of Nintendo fans are and kinda should be slightly p*ssed that this isn't coming to a Nintendo console near them right about now.
It's basically a Best of Rare Compilation, in one nice neat and cheap package—and being in that one nice neat package is a very attractive part of this bundle imo—and I can't think of any serious gamers, especially old Nintendo gamers and genuine fans, who wouldn't be properly excited about this to be honest and at the same time disappointed they're not getting it if they only own a Wii U.
Consider that if this were announced for Wii U during Nintendo's E3 video then you can bet your life that every single person on this site would be shouting from the rooftops that Nintendo had basically won E3 with that one announcement alone—whether that would be a realistic evaluation of the E3 situation is neither here nor there. It's a big deal, a great deal, and I think we should all give Microsoft its due here because it's done Xbox One owners a great service and shown them a lot of love with this announcement.
@Bryon15 At the time, it was a wise business decision. Rare wasnt productive anymore. They havent been ever since they are part of Microsoft.
The only thing of worth Nintendo "lost" was the Banjo license.
So why pay money for a studio that hasnt been worth it ever since ?
Microsoft surely hasnt profitet off of them either
This is a really good deal if you have an xbox1 already, but anyone saying that this compilation is game-changing enough for them to purchase the system is either a hyped-up internet fibber or just plain
silly
@Kirk Why should i be jelous about other people having fun on other consoles ? The last time i checked, such a behaviour was shunned upon when it was about Bayo 2 being WiiU exclusive, and now we should be pissed that Microsoft releases a pack of games belonging to one of their sub divisions ?
Really ?
Sorry, but i have plenty of ways to enjoy these games too, without spending a buck on an Xbox One, which, other then this pack, has nothing of worth to offer. And i AM a WiiU owner since day one.
@Einherjar Then last time you checked you checked it was relative to a small section of the gamers—probably biased ones at that. If a great game doesn't come to the only console you own—especially a bundle of classic games as cool as this; from one of the most respected developers in the industry, with a great catalogue of beloved titles—then it's pretty much a sad face situation every time imo.
There's times for moaning and bemoaning a company when it gets things wrong, or complaining when it doesn't do quite enough or deliver fully on its potential, or whatever—this isn't one of those times, in respect to what Microsoft has given its loyal consumers with this bundle...
...unless of course you only own a Wii U or whatever, and then you should right be pretty disappointed and/or p*ssed off.
There could still be a possibility of Banjo coming to Virtual Console. I think it would just be a matter of if Nintendo would be willing to give up whatever percent of sales Microsoft asks for. Obviously the Xbox bundle is the better consumer value though as these would be $12-$15 each on Wii U. Microsoft would get paid and Wii U owners would be tempted to add an Xbox One to their collection. I really think Microsoft should allow Rare (whats left anyway) to develop a new Banjo game for the Xbox library soon though. I have a Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One so I will definitely be buying this. I did support Playtronix and will be getting Yooka Laylee on the Wii U for sure.
@Kirk Again, those are NOT exclusive titles. You have more then enough ways to play them. Heck, even plenty of "unofficial" ways, if youre so desperate.
Also, sure, i complain if a dev / publisher skips a console for no apparent reason. But they are a sub division of MS now, so why complain about it ?
And if "gamers" feel the need to complain about the dumbest s*it, more power to them, i dont have time for that.
@Einherjar The point you keep making about them not being exclusive is utterly irrelevant.
30 Rare classics in one self-contained bundle for $30 is plain awesome. That's not an opinion. That's an objective fact.
There is no real debate to be had around that—like there's actually something not awesome about that deal. The notion there's maybe a negative here, for Xbox One owners—or even just that's it's somehow not that big a deal—is ridiculous. The debate about is over. You just think it's not.
Stop trying to find a way to knock down or underplay something that's actually genuinely good for once.
@Kirk You just dont know what the debate was actually about my friend.
It was not about the pack, it was about it being a system seller, which it is not.
And why is it irrelevant ? If i own their entire library of games already, why should i go out and buy a 400 bucks console just to repurchase them for 30 bucks, because "the deal is just great"
Thats just dumb.
Again for the xth time:
If you own the system, great, if you dont, its no big deal.
@Einherjar The problem is your debate was with me, in response to my original post, and I'm not sitting here claiming it's a system seller (I never did), so you're having that particular debate with yourself.
This bundle, what you are getting for your money and what it means in terms of gaming nostalgia and fan service, is a big deal in and of itself. I'm saying Nintendo could have had something as good as this on its console by now too (if it hadn't dropped Rare), in terms of value for money and what you are getting here (a collection of some of the greatest games from one of the greatest developers; especially as far as hardcore Nintendo fans are concerned), but it doesn't and it the cold hard truth is that it probably never will because Nintendo has never ever been as generous as this to its fans (in terms of such a value for money bundle).
@Kirk You know, we have a saying for this in german:
"Du hast recht, und ich hab meine Ruhe"
Have fun
@Einherjar I'm sure you do.
This seems like a nice collection, but can I play with my Wii Remote NES style? (no seriously, is there a way to do that?)
Anyway, I agree that this is not a big deal. Also, don't see why Wii U owners should care. The entire VC of Wii/WiiU/3DS is massive, and obviously Rare games without the Nintendo ones like DKC, were bought for good money by Microsoft. It's just surprising it took them so long to do it. It's actually quite a lot of missing games - DKC Trilogy, DK 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye, Star Fox Adventures...
I thing the big point here are the prices. Nintendo has to urgentely review their prices. If we buy 30 VC games, or in other words, ROMS that run on almost perfect emulators (let's say 10 NES games, 10 SNES games and 10 N64 games) it would cost $230. This is completely insane.
@Einherjar Don't forget DKR!!
Strangely I think this is a system seller for many, many people. I already have an Xbox One, so this is a day one purchase for me. I was going to re-buy an N64 to play many of the titles included on this compilation. This is a no brainer for me. It's worth the price just to play Jet Force Gemini again!
@DarkJamD Perfect Dark Zero was a sequel, not a port of an N64 game. And this is a port of a bunch of SNES, NES, GBA games. It's going to have an audience, but you'll be able to buy the collection for $15 within 2 months of release.
@Peach64 Of those 60 million that bought a NES and SNES... you'd be shocked how many just don't play video games anymore. We adults who are still playing now are the minority.
@Williaint you know what ? Those are my thoughts exactly
@DarkJamD tell me this then. Do you think the X-bone ( or whatever ) can emulate perfect control with two handheld weapons that vibrates ( THE RECOIL FROM AN REAL FIREARM ). Can the X-bone really force you to rethink ( thus calculate ) how you play the game entirely?? Two controllers in one hand via Perfect Dark is no kiddie-laughing matter it is something to master. Show me the video of some five year old who is playing with two controllers on the final level ( or even the first for that matter ) of perfect dark. Nothing compares to the emersion of playing with two N64 controllers with functioning rumble packs that both have recoil; while an army of gunmen and things are looking for you, while running around inside an virtual space. Nothing can ever compare to that feeling alone, especially after mastering it.
Also, I believe is not the only game that does this as well?? I think"Sin and Punishment" for the N64 also have the same affect as well. But I doubt you have actually attempt to play with two controllers/guns in your hands.
The best part about this is how you can individually move both weapons in your hands.
It makes an big difference in gameplay and mindset. Can you master the N64 dual controller affect in "Perfect Dark"???
You go like "Better Graphics" I laugh at you for even saying that. "Perfect Dark" on the N64 have great graphics and probably even more enjoyable graphics compared to "Time Splitters" there is no way anybody who have played Perfect Dark could say the game has terrible graphics.
This whole "Latest is Greatest" motto is the most garbage idea ever. I was not taught about "Thou shall own items that will rust, or mold" until later in my life. That is what that "Latest is greatest" nonsense is about. It might work for boats and planes, but electronics are forever.
@ottospooky if Rareware gold is an system seller for the X-bone then it just proves how poor of an line-up the Mafiasoft have.
@XCWarrior they do not play videogames anymore because they are dead. Or they got somebody pregnant. Or they focused on moving out. Or they had to work on there projects and life goals. Or they are in prison. Or they regret playing games and never really got into as an fad.
XCWarrior the reality is that older audience are an minority to "TV-Toys" like the X-bone/GCN/WiiU/Dreamcas /NES/PS1-2-3-4/etc. It is the older audience that allows spending of such products. Remember this is capitalism we are talking about with products.
Personally if no more Tv-toys was being made the next thing they would do is try and attack the r-tard phones. Why not the PC? Because everybody knows the PC market is only an small group of people.
That small group of people are the ADULTS
that spend money mindlessly ( like on toilet
tissues, rent, and water ), on various products.
If Game devers was doing PC formats from beginning, all TV-toys would be simular to what the "Android" OS is today. An OS that features the same replay value based on what is loaded inside of your system. In fact this practice was being done in the 1990's in China areas including Korea as well. I personally wish PC ( Windows, Amiga, Mac, DOS, etc, Apple, OSX, Unix ) was taken into practice from the creation of TV toys.
Get an N64 and play "Perfect Dark" with dual controllers. Seriously it is something that somebody should master from the start of playing perfect dark. "Perfect Dark" also supports widescreen, including curved displays ( those morphic displays????? ).
It was solid gold perfect from day one of it's creation.

The sad part about X-box porting is that all X-box games will be more then playable on an new computer before the year 2020. Which makes it even funnier to see people scurring to run for this kit. I would just find people with games and trade with each other until you have completed each others collection.
@HollywoodHogan Hollywoodhogan, I see your messages on here a lot. It seems you go waaaaay out of your way to make ridiculous comments based on nothing. For your consistency, I applaud you.
The list of games on the Rare bundle consistently retail for over $300 total to acquire them all. Charging $30 is silly on two levels:
1-it cheapens the games and devalues them to a consumer.
2-they would have made way more money by charging double and that still would have been cheap.
You're a business, you make money, you like money; why would you choose not to make money? Unless you're an utter dummy?
@DESS-M-8
Ok then.
E-mail Microsoft and then tell them that they should be charging $300 for this game and that they are making a horrible mistake! They should sell a boat load of copies at that price!
P.S., remember when you said this??
"I think the NX has been in development a lot longer than we think and companies like EA, ubisoft and square Enix have had development kits for the last two years. Development has been minimal on wii u as development budgets have been directed toward this console. Why would EA invest in fifa 16 on a console nintebdo have openly invested little in and been investing literally 100's of millions of £'s on a new developing console? If they've a budget to spend it will be on the emerging platform, not the place holder format."
Still LOL @ thinking EA, Ubisoft and SE are wasting any time developing titles for whatever the NX turns out to be!
According to you, EA hasn't released a single game on Wii U because they have been working on secret titles the last 3 years for the hardware coming AFTER the Wii U...yet they still manage to find the time to put out 10+ titles a year on the PS4 and Xbox One?!!
Hahaha pure gold!!
@HollywoodHogan can't even begin to stop laughing at how sad you are for traulling hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
Taken out of context. The point was that wii u was not worth anyone's investment from a third party especially when there's implications of a new console. It is more likely they will be looking to NX than hoe the could feasibly turn a profit on a failed console.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha still laughing at you hahahahahahahaha
@HollywoodHogan equally so, $5 per game for the like of battletoads, killer instinct, Banjo kazooie, Conkers Bad Fur Day, blastcorpsis DORT cheap and would sell the same volume.
30 x $5???? $150? Good call!!
And you've just made $120 per customer more than your first attempt at business. Plus you give choice to the consumer. Or virtually give it away for $30.
Waste, especially nothing of any value will come out from Rare ever again.
@DESS-M-8
No one would pay $150 for that Rare game!
If it was released on Nintendo, even they wouldn't have been dumb enough to charge $59.99 for it! Would probably be the same price as Captain Toad or something.
Please, point me to a non-special edition of a video game that has EVER sold for $150 a copy, let alone one that is a compilation that features 30 year old games!
Third parties are gone from Nintendo. They aren't coming back.
Why would they waste their time developing for NX, a console with 0 owners, when by the time it comes out the PS4 will likely have 40+ million owners and the Xbox 20-25million or so?
Enjoy living in fantasy land!
@HollywoodHogan wow. Just wow. I can't even begin to be bothered to spend the hours it would take to point out how wrong you are. You've completely missed the point of everything. So for your own sake shhhhhhhhhh.
Better to remain quiet and thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
@DESS-M-8
Ya, a fool who is smart enough to realize that EA, Bethesda, etc aren't busy making game for NX like you seem to believe.
Maybe after Nintendo dumps Reggie they will hire you!
@HollywoodHogan they are MORE LIKELY to develop something on NX rather than Wii U. Why would any third party developer invest in wii u when nintendo themselves have already shifted focus to their next hardware?
By your logic, battlefield 4 and madden 25 should not have been available on launch day for ps4! What the hell were EA thinking of when they developed several games for PS4 before the first console had even been sold!!!!?
That's just insane!
Who would do such a thing!!!???
Developing for an as yet unreleased but in development new console!?
Nobody has ever done that!?
All these software companies should really follow your model.
They are all insane and have no idea what they've been doing forth last 30 years, probably before you were born.
But still, they should listen to you.
Or.
Maybe.
You're totally and utterly wrong like usual????
Xbox owners are in for a treat if they really play all these games.
And if they're young, they're in for a rough awakening as to how difficult games used to be, but also how intricate they used to be, and how vapid most modern games are by comparison.
@MrGawain Um console version of smite... New and tasty: oddworld abe's odedysee, the witcher III, etc. The list goes on... Maybe you can play those games on wii but it would look terrible. To be honest I enjoy new xbox games more than I ever liked any nintendo releases after gamecube. Wii and Wiiu are a joke. Sorry had to say it, but I love old nintendo classics so rare replay was a no-brainer. I only wish they had included diddy kong racing instead of viva pinata or something...
@Heebiegeeber
I had to look back at the post I wrote two months ago, but I was referring to console exclusives that interested ME. My point was personally for ME I didn't see a reason to own an Xbox as none of the exclusives appealed to me. and I felt they dropped off after the 3 shooty games they had. In my personal opinion I feel Nintendo still have more interesting exclusives on the Wii U, which is why I read NintendoLife. Sorry to hear you don't like the Wii U, but it's sort of an important thing around here. To be honest I also own a PS4, and beyond Arkham and Brothers: a tale of two sons I found a lot of the other stuff on that to be ver shiny graphics, but dull as dishwater gameplay so far- including the Witcher 3. In my opinion the Wii U is still streets ahead of both the other consoles in terms of fun.
