The Nintendo Direct last month was arguably the first time the Big N had any major news to share since E3. Ever since, hype levels have come back down to normal levels, without too many surprise announcements to be had. While it's still unknown when the next Nintendo Direct will be taking place, it seems that some kind of major Nintendo announcement is one the horizon.
Damon Baker – NOA Senior Manager of Licensing and Marketing – was recently taking part in Nintendo World Report's podcast when he shared the news. Here's exactly what he had to say:
"Speaking of announcements, I wish I could tell you guys, but stay tuned for Monday. Monday there's going to be something… something happening on Monday. It's going to be big."
In the Nintendo Direct, it was confirmed that there would be one last Super Smash Bros. Direct in December, so perhaps it could be something relating to that. Or, perhaps it's related to the major news that CoroCoro alluded to in last month's issue. Only time will tell.

Oh man, this sounds big...December is turning into one crazy month already!
Final Smash ballot is almost the only thing it can be. Although if it's Style Savvy 3 I won't mind. Not kidding about that, either.
I'm going to assume this mostly has to do with smash.
If I had to bet, I'd definitely say it's the Smash Ballot or an announcement of when the Smash direct is (which will likely announce the ballot anyways).

Hmmm...I'm led to believe that it's something we don't know anything about, or anything we anticipate, like the Smash Direct, based on how he words it. But, I'm probably reading into it too much. Most likely, it's Smash. A Pokemon announcement wouldn't be that big, per se, unless it's moving into Gen VII.

They usually announce directs in far in advance, and an announcement for the Smash direct date isn't huge. It has to be something that hasn't been announced yet.

Lets see...as far as speculation goes, I'm guessing that either its going to be Pokemon related along the lines of announcing the next main series Pokemon games, or maybe ( and this is just wishful thinking on my part) they'll finally announce that the original new 3DS is finally getting a standalone release here in North America.

I hope it's a big surprise, because Nintendo has been very underwhelming lately. At least to me.
I just heard that it might be another new IP for Wii U using google translation on a few Japanese websites! If true what would you guys hope it'll be? Personally I hope it'll be a new RPG series. As of right now Xenoblade Chronicles X is the only retail Wii U RPG and SMTxFE is the only other Wii U RPG that we currently know is in development.

I'd love if it was the Nintendo Account. Ever since hearing about its start in Japan--specifically the two-month promo of $1 back for every $10 spent on the eshop--I've been hoping to hear about it for here, as I have lots of VC games to purchase, having recently purchased the white Wii U Deluxe from the online Nintendo store, and needing to catch up.
My money's on more details for their new account system.

It could mean "literally" big, as in new suprise announcment of a major game or "hey, heres a new santa mario amiibo" big.
Maybe an expected date for the Smash broadcast?

B) New shovelware animal crossing or something

This headline sounded really promising until I read it was the NOA guy himself who claimed it would be big. Predication: It won't be very big at all. Probably something like Minecraft coming to Wii U. Nobody is going to buy a Wii U for Minecraft and there can't even be many Wii U owners out there that have no other device capable of playing that game.

Not going to get my hopes up. 'Something big' could very well just mean literally in size (such as another 'Mega' version of an amiibo or something), and I'm not going to get myself disappointed if it's just something like that.

There's no way it'll be NX related as it's not 2016 yet and there's still time to shift Wii U consoles for Christmas.
It could be Zelda U related but then showing footage of a game isn't really an announcement, it's a reveal.
It could very well be Smash related like the Direct as time is moving on. A new IP is also potentially possible though more likely it's something we already know.
I just think Nintendo will save the big guns, new game wise, for the NX and I think they'll announce it in March at its own special event to coincide with the launch of My Nintendo and the rewards system.
Keeping my expectations in check, so I'm gonna say Smash.
I won't get excited yet since it could be anything. I doubt it's Smash since I'd expect some warning that a Smash direct is coming up. It might be something that doesn't appeal to me, such as Minecraft or another game I'm not interested in. Nintendo account news is also possible, which will be good to have but isn't that exciting.
It could be something insanely fantastic though, such as big Pokemon information. Another gen 6 seems most likely. If they announce X2 and Y2 using the same style anime trailer that Black 2 and White 2 got, then nothing could contain my hype.
Edit: maybe my lack of Minecraft excitement is a bit unfair. My only experience of that game is playing on my really old very bad laptop. It lagged whenever I walked to a new place. I survived the first night since the lag stopped enemies reaching me.
Unless the word 'big' is an exaggeration it will be NX Easter.

I thought their last Direct was hugely disappointing, especially as a Wii U owner. The only real highlight was Twilight Princess but that's a remaster of an old game most of us have already played and the visuals weren't exactly stunning.

That was pretty much how my first comment on this article was going to end, but I thought "Please, please be Cloud's release date. My expectations are low, but there are 3 things that would excite me:
-Some sort of big VC announcement (Gamecube games, an impressive schedule of upcoming releases and/or sales...that sort of thing).

That's it... big can mean different things to different people. Personally, I'd like them to finally start with GC VC releases but others may view that as trivial. Others would want the announcement of a new Metroid game but I wouldn't find that in any way appealing but that's just me. Either way, i'm sure the announcement would be something unprecedented or it wouldn't be thought of as being 'big'. Here's hopin'.
If it were a meaningful reveal, it would have happened at The Game Awards when it would have had an audience beyond Nintendo fans. Or at the direct we just had. Or the one coming up. I struggle to imagine this will be anything genuinely "big" but I welcome being proven wrong.

Then again, the flying-pigs game known as MOTHER (or EarthBound Beginnings) did get a Virtual Console release, so, between EB and Cloud in FFVII, it's safe to assume Nintendo can pull anything off.
Next Metroid is a Wii U and NX simultaneous release! Half-Life 3 is NX exclusive and Psychonauts 2 will add NX as a stretch goal!

@H_Hunter Because Smash is a big deal, the biggest thing that creates hype in Nintendo Directs. Combine that with the biggest PSX announcement being something that is related to Smash (FFVII remake), may as well take advantage of the hype for that and the hype for Smash via the Smash Direct.

Because Nintendo often plays it safe - overly safe. A new Metroid or a new F-Zero essentially are huge bags of cash just waiting to be thrown at Nintendo, and yet their usual "big announcement" don't go beyond a Virtual Console release that could have been done months before. Which is why I'm expecting the upcoming VC release of Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow to be the 3DS VC's last hurrah.
And yeah, as @Grumblevolcano said, Smash is a big deal.

For the past 2 years they've been giving 1 or 2 days notice for the NDs. Surely this guy isn't announcing a "big announcement" for what will be Nintendo saying on Monday that there will be an ND on Wednesday.

I am very glad a real person said this, I am so sick of reading about "a Nintendo representative said" when no name or title is given. At least if it's an official Nintendo press release that's what it is, a press release.
Not sure what this is. Not an ND as I've already stated. Pokemon group does it's own thing, and they do it very well, they don't need this guys help, he probably doesn't even know what goes on with Pokemon. I like the amusement park idea as that would be "big" and involve licensing. He also said "something happening", he didn't say "announcement" he said "happening" like a groundbreaking or ribbon cutting ceremony. As has been mentioned before, if it was sooo big then it would've come out at the Game Awards... or is the Game Awards not for those kind of announcements?
It should be for the fans but is it as simple as a new ND? Haven't Nintendo released what was essentially an ND straight to Youtube without any announcement once before? They could do it again, either with Smash or otherwise.
To tie in with Smash, should they release FF7 for VC i'd be ecstatic. It may happen, with Sony remaking FF7 they could have given rights for the original to be republished elsewhere, hence the appearance of Cloud in Smash. The game coming to the VC is also likely then as are the other FF games.
I'm still hoping for gamecube VC games though, finally!!! Along with more N64 games it'd be a 'big' thing in my opinion.
Maybe the date of when they're going to reveal more details of the NX perhaps? A deal with Square Enix to release some new games on Wii U/NX? They've obtained Project M and will be releasing it as a more complete version of Brawl on the eShop? XD

Nintendo sometimes throws things out of Directs so not expecting one. Also weird that he is being so vague about it. Not even a cryptic hint.
'Big' could mean a lot of things. It could be our first viewing of the NX (probably not) or something as small as another minor Pokemon spin-off (also unlikely on the other side of the scale)
I think it's somewhere in-between, I think we'll get a date for the Smash Direct at least.

I think is has to be with a prior news about some games from Nintendo that hasn't been announced yet. I'm expecting 3-4 extra games (Pokemon Z could be included as well as some eShop-only titles). And no, free-to-start games won't cut mustard!
Zelda U's release date is a big announcement also.
Something big? K Rool is pretty hefty, so he'd quality as big. Then there's also Big the Cat...

Definitely not going to be the Smash Direct. If it's something related to that, it'll just be the announcement of the date they're having it. It's not Pokemon related, as the Pokemon Company handles that themselves.
Damon Baker is basically the head indie guy. So that means a few things:
-A new Nindie Humble Bundle (this is likely, as the current Humble Bundle ends on Monday)
-A new indie amiibo
-Minecraft Wii U
-Some high-profile indie game coming to Wii U or 3DS.
Perhaps Nintendo wants to catch us off guard by scheduling the Smash Direct that day

My guess is it will be the announcement which was announced by CoroCoro about Pokemon Z or X2/Y2. (LOL, I still haven't come to grips with announcements of announcements being a common hype tool these days...) If not that, then the long overdue Minecraft on Wii U. Unless they have some secret they've been keeping, those are the two biggest things they could bring out for right now.

It could (I stress "could") be a PS1 Final Fantasy VII port onto Wii U, with Final Fantasy VII's remake coming to the NX in 2016 (due to both hardware limitations and first exclusivity to Sony). Is it coincidental that the remake is out for PS4 today and that the announcement is tomorrow? Plus, Nintendo's relationship with Square has strengthened some more with the Dragon Quest games coming to 3DS. Not to mention the elephant in the room, Cloud being announced for Smash 4 and all...

Jokes aside, it's most likely either the Smash Ballot reveal or the introduction of the new Nintendo Rewards system. I'm expecting the Pokemon announcement to be its own thing. Regardless what the news is, I'm just hoping it's something good!

Unlikely Prediction 1: Cloud's release date for Smash is revealed, veterans Pichu, Wolf and Snake return to Smash 4 as well alongside Cloud. The Final Fantasy VII remake is announced for NX as well.
Unlikely Prediction 2: Mother 3 is remade in 3D and released on the 3DS. Lucas and Ness amiibos are compatible with Mother 3D.
Unlikely Prediction 3: Pokemon Z announced, alongside a remake of Pokemon Red and Blue. Blastoise, Mewtwo and Greninja are also confirmed playable in Pokken Tournament.
Unlikely Prediction 4: Undertale announced to be released on the Wii U eShop. Sans is also confirmed to be playable in Super Smash Bros. For Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

He didn't really say there was going to be an announcement he said something is happening. I'm going to think outside the box and say Nintendo bought some smaller company, or maybe even acquired an IP from somebody else. If I was in a dream world they would have acquired Mega Man and Sonic, but I doubt that's happening.
Edit: I'm going to get even crazier and say Hideo Kojima is working for Nintendo as of Monday, because Kojima is well known for doing things people never expect.

Let me ask you guys what would be the point of more smash info if we are getting a smash direct? Some of you are obviously trolling but it seems some of you actually think it's going to be some crazy news. It's most likely a high profile indie game. I expect it to be one that was shown off at the game awards due to back room deals.

You guys, we really need to think with context. This teaser was made by the head indie guy in a podcast. That means it'll be "big" in that scope. It's not gonna be some megaton announcement.
So either Minecraft for Wii U w/ amiibo support, a new indie amiibo, a high profile indie game coming to Wii U or 3DS (Axiom Verge, Undertale, Her Story), another Humble Bundle, or amiibo support for an indie game (Captain Falcon support for Fast Racing Neo?).

Strange time of year for a "big announcement." As always, I want more Zelda news (name, release date, footage, etc.), but I'll guess it'll actually be Smash Bros. related (Direct announcement, Cloud DLC release, pricing). I don't think we'll see the ballot winner until the Smash Direct.

If this is Smash, mobile, or account news I'll be predictably disappointed. Aren't we already expecting big news from the Smash Direct? A new, previously unannounced AAA title would be the biggest big news for my money. A Zelda trailer, or NX news would also count as big. If it has anything to do with Amiibos, free-to-play, or dressing up your favorite Nintendo characters in fun outfits I'll probably come on here and start ranting about switching to PS4 again.

I really hope this "big announcement" was NOT that Minecraft is coming out on December 17th. If so that will be very disappointing since it was leaked weeks ago, then removed and now confirmed. Hopefully it is actually something big that we haven't heard about like the Smash Ballot and/or more MK8 DLC since there is lots of maintenance later today on lots of games and online services.

'big' means different things to different people. To a lot of people this is 'big' news. People have been calling for this pretty much since the release of the WiiU. Personally, I couldn't care less about Minecraft but I know a lot of people have been begging for this so I for one am glad that they have this on the WiiU now. Good for them.

@BestBuck15 you do realize that not a week has gone by since miiverse opened up that kids haven't begged for minekraft. Go to any big miivese announcement over the last two and a half years and you will see kids begging for it. Not all Nintendo fans are 16 to 35 you know. This is a big deal even if you don't like it. Just watch the eshop charts after this baby releases.

@AlexSora89 Yeah, it was indeed a letdown. For a little while there I got carried away in it too, but then again: what could we realistically have expected? And the signs were all there: him being an indie champion, the leaked reveal two weeks earlier and there were probably other clues as well. Other than the fact that lately, a lot of what Nintendo thinks is great, isn't really that great to begin with. Oh well.

@BestBuck15 sorry if that came off overly negative. I have no interest in minkraft personaly but I would bet at least 2 million users do. It will be the best selling 3rd party on the wiiu even if it's more than a little late. Personally I hope this creates a partnership with Microsoft and they will allow a few n64 gems to hit the virtual console.

@faint Well, i find it rather hilarious that the media outlets especially had no idea, as it is their job to go after rumors, speculations and such.
This was hardly big news however you look at it.
It was always said that Minecraft on WiiU was a possibility, whenever a reasonable opportunity arrived. And with Telltales Story Mode, which basically came with a working Engine, porting the game was already halfway done anyways. That was said opportunity.
It actually would have been bigger news if it would have been canceled for good.

I can agree here and I am going to add in that Nintendo telling us when the Nintendo Account System that Japan has already gotten and that Europe and other places are getting would have been a more News Worthy Announcement.

@Einherjar actually Mojang said they didn't want to work on this many times. I'm thinking Microsoft asked them too. That's why most didn't expect it. In fact mojang open mocked the console today after the anouncement on their Twitter. " it's time to plug your console back in because minekraft is coming to wiiu"
