Remember that rumour we reported on some time ago that Ryu and Roy could be coming to Super Smash Bros.? Well, it seems to be getting more real, as the character has been found in game patch data in the Japanese version of the game.
Unseen64's Liam Robertson found the footage, which has been posted in unlisted videos on YouTube.
Here are the videos, clearly showing Roy and Ryu doing their business in the game - Ryu seems to have his own stage, as well:
Could these be part of the special video presentation that Nintendo is holding tomorrow? Sound off in the comments.

Also, in the victory video for RYU , his stage from street fighter can be seen, also Dreamland 64 is returning as a stage and Inkling trophies have been spotted aswell
If we're not going to be getting a new Streetfighter game then I don't see the point in this.If we are though then bring him on.
Ugh... why...
It makes me wonder if the smash ballot is a real thing now, because of this find and that they may already have characters they already have in mind.
@OorWullie probably more promotional stuff for Crapcom. Nintendo getting shafted by them and enjoying it as usual. Don't see why they would allow this. Not like they give us games anymore.
Um.. there was also another video of Roy. It has been edited, but looks pretty legit as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8Jjz-V8jE4&feature=youtu.be
When Ryu is fighting in Smash Bros., Alfonzo becomes the ultimate street fighter.
Alfonzo: "Leave it to me!"
Ninty should be more careful than leaving code behind...
It ruins the surprise.
Now to wait the comment section of people who whine about his inclusion :>
I can't wait to use him!
No, no, no, no, no! I haven't finished Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition, yet!
@BlueCosmos42 Thanks, Liam also spotted this on Twitter, have updated the post to add in Roy.
Ryu is a great inclusion. He's probably more of a video gaming icon than Mega Man.
C'mon, save some surprises for E3...
@97alexk I'm hoping for Fountain of Dreams in HD
Please let Roy and Ryu be absolute monsters, I'd love to use them as regulars.
I hope they follow it with a Tatsunoko vs Capcom 2 and Fire Emblem for WiiU reveal
I. Am. So. HYPED!
Nice!!! But Ryu???? There has to be a big reason why he's joining besides his legacy.
Welp, I suddenly got more hyped for the two of them than I expected I would.
.... SHORYUKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Rosalina I hope Capcom has something to bring to the table with Nintendo after shafting us out of Resident Evil(Revelations 2 and both remasters), Street Fighter, etc. I'm hoping for a Tatsunoko vs Capcom 2 or a new Megaman game at least
I can't say I'm a fan of hackers spoiling the fun of surprises.
@liljmoore I totally agree. Least they could give us something. The way Capcom have treated Nintendo has made me lose respect for them. Hopefully they can restore some of that this coming E3. Otherwise it will push me further in the anti Capcom direction.
Please stop ruining E3 for me!!!!
Dear video game companies,
Please save something for E3. At this rate the expo will be lots of empty tables with reps twiddling their thumbs. No one want to watch that!
public uploads of the videos on this channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgZhuu12jjWvejHTOfh4pgg
Another amiibo for us to NOT find anywhere soon! Yay...?
Roy announcer voice has also been leaked.
Here it is:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/bngcwa71vj7j61q/snd_se_narration_characall_Roy.wav?dl=0
@liljmoore I'd rather have a Binding Blade port localization (Wii U VC) than a brand new FE game for Wii U.
I know Ryu is cool and that, and I am very excited to use him, but WHY? We don't really get a lot of Street Fighter games anymore. Hopefully having Ryu in this means something...
I much prefer to find out about new fighters though an official reveal video instead of leaks, but I can't wait to play as Ryu. Both these characters are looking nice.
so they already have a chance to be in smash 4, nice!
So disappointed... When you haven't played any Street Fighter games, Ryu is just a basic muscular dude with a few moves from Dragon Ball (no, it's not cool, it's absolutely boring), and Roy.. another clone...
Please consider adding a [Spoiler alert] to these kinds of posts. It's interesting news but I'd rather find out through the presentation..
NOOOOOOO!!!! THE BIG SURPRISE HAD BEEN RUINED!!!! THIS IS HORRIBLE I WILL NOT ACCEPT LEAKS ANYMORE THIS RUINED SUNDAYS PRESENTATION!!!!!!!!
@Grumblevolcano Why can't we have both? Two FE games at once. One Old and one New
OH MY GOD PLEASE
Really puzzled why so many people don't get this inclusion. Okay, there's not been a Street Fighter on a Nintendo console for a few years, but neither has there been a Mega Man game. He's a proper video game icon, and they don't necessarily need him there to promote any new Street Fighter, because they're going to make a boatload of cash of everyone buying him for $5 a pop.
The Ansatsuken fighting style is coming to Super Smash Bros.
Meh. Roy's cool, but I for one, don't care about Ryu. Also, thanks once again for another spoiled suprise. Keep this up, and E3 won't exactly be very earth shattering.
If this is real then I am so happy so see Ryu in there—although I kinda think this might finally show people the issue I have with Smash's particular control method in general vs something more traditional like Street Fighter. It will be interesting to see how a character with basically spot-on controls imo, as experienced in say SFII Turbo, translates into Smash's controls/gameplay...
PS. Again, if this is real; I told you Nintendo's representation of Ryu in 3D would look better than Capcom's own representation of its characters in the likes of SFIV and SFV. I wish Capcom would use Nintendo's far less "fugly Americanised SNES box art" style in its future Street Fighter games.
If you don't know what I mean when I say "fugly Americanised SNES box art" then I point you to this:
Now when they get revealed it won't be a surprise at all. Going to be like "oh hey it's roy" STOP LEAKING THESE STUFF IT'S BORING AND ANNOYING. I didn't want Roy or Ryu anyways...
@Achoo My bro got it recently and a group of us tried playing it and all of us basically came out thinking the same thing; that it just feels a bit messy and less engaging, certainly than the kind of fighters I usually like. We certainly didn't leave feeling like we'd have a great time to be honest. It just felt a bit like mindless flailing and we all found it kinda hard to correlate what we were doing on the controller with what the in-game characters were doing. I think this might be why a lot of people can't really get into Smash—although clearly there's also a great deal of people who can get into it and in fact love it. Personally, I just think it's a bit weirdly designed in terms of the correlation between controls input and actions/moves output. I've never owned it personally though, so maybe it would just take time to get used to it—having said that I didn't feel like this when I played Street Fighter II in the arcades for the first time because everything just made sense and flowed smoothly.
You know, with all the leaking and that accidental Hyrule Warriors trailer going up.. it's really spoiling the surprises. :/
@Rhydas Probably because Ryu is basically the most recognisable and popular fighting game character of all time; I presume. He's also generally great fun to play as and has a lot of cool special moves too. Also; it's a Capcom character and Capcom characters have already appeared in Smash, so the addition of Capcom's most famous fighting character kinda makes a whole lot of sense really. To me, having Ryu in there is like brining royalty to the party, or inviting an ancient and respected grand master, one of the greats and originators of the fighting genre, into the mix. That's a good thing imo.
@Achoo It's sad to me that it takes such a long time to get around the slightly weird/unintuitive control/gameplay setup Nintendo went for here. I mean I want to love this game but every time I've tried it, over the last few generations, it just felt kinda messy and like flailing around, which puts me off it pretty much immediately.
I guess one day I'll give it ANOTHER chance to win me over
@KirbyKirbyKirby To be fair, they did cite a months-long development cycle to make new characters. If that's not total BS (when depending on their remaining team size it very well be legit), these characters would have been in development since before the ballot was announced. It would simply mean that more characters pertaining to the ballot are still to come...but only time will tell for sure.
IMO, these are both bad character choices for Smash (especially Roy...we don't need ANOTHER Marth clone!). But if they're serious about it, I guess it's whatever. At least Ryu will probably be an easier amiibo to find since they've been favoring third parties so much.
@Achoo Well I know why the game is great in terms of overall design and stuff, I mean it's CLEARLY a stunningly well put together game, but I personally have never liked the way it feels to play in the few minutes I've spent with each iteration before being put off continuing to play it.
Als these leaks are ruining E3. Nintendo Life needs the clicks so they don't give a fak.
I dont think i will read any nintendo news until E3 begins, that way it doesnt get spoiled. Remember the old days when there were game magazines and you got more hyped. Internet is good and bad.
We all know that the DLC amiibo will all be retailer exclusives (e.g. TRU: Mewtwo, Gamestop: Lucas)
Awesome!!!
I could go for some fried falco. Sounds rather tasty.
That's pretty awkward, since none of the main Street Fighter games have come to Nintendo's home consoles in so long. They had the perfect chance with Street Fighter 4 Ultra, and they just left the Wii U out.
@Achoo You understand there was not such thing as eSport when the original Smash was designed and created, right?
Smash was designed to be a "game" as much as Street Fighter was, and I guess the issue I have with it is; imagine if you had to spend 50 hours playing Street Fighter II in the arcade just to even get used to it—not totally master it; just to get used to it and get comfortable with it...
I just have a slight issue with that kind of design in a fighting games; although to be honest, I don't actually think it would take anywhere near 50 hours to get used to Smash but I'm just using the time you said to convey my point.
@Achoo I actually want to like it—I mean it's a fighting game with basically all of Nintendo's greatest characters in it (two of my favourite things)—and that's why it bugs me so much that it seems to make it difficult to do so, for gamers like me.
Screw the people that don't like this, this is fantastic! If anything Roy is a letdown unless he had drastic changes.
Project X Zone 2 is produced by Monolith Software, and features Capcom, Sega, and Namco characters.
I wonder if there's any other game that has characters from these 4 software developers on Nintendo systems, and if there was, would there be a way to utilise little plastic figures from that game for Project X Zone 2?
So many complaining "why these guys why not other guys?". The inclusion of one character does not mean the exclusion of another. Roy is a fan favourite being brought back and Ryu, like it or not, is an icon in the video game medium.
Who knows who else we will get later, we may well get Issac, Chibi Robo, Inklings, Banjo Kazooie (though I still think that one's a stretch as MS will likely charge a fortune for the rights), Rayman etc. There's no set limit here.
I just hope they make the pricing better, compared to MK8 is felt quite overpriced. If they each game with a stage and a bunch of trophies to unlock that'd certainly help sweeten the deal. Or just bundle characters for a discount.
Has this def been confirmed as just not some [very talented] fan made fake?
Thanks for the damn spoiler GameXPlain and Nintedolife.... Why can't you guys just say "spoiler" in the title ? It's not too hard and there are people who don't want to be spoilered...
Ugh, I think I'd prefer shrek over Ryu
I'd rather have Phoenix Wright.
face palm
@Peach64 Even though hes famous, hes no where near that memorable.
Like always, make the test yourself. Go ask non gamers and show them a pic of both characters. Most of them recognize MegaMan, pretty much none recognize Ryu.
Both are great characters--even if Ryu seems a bit out of place for Smash Bros.--but stuff like this is what makes me despise the internet sometimes. Something really cool for the fans, probably to get announced during Sakurai's presentation tomorrow, and people have to leak it before the time comes. I praise the leaker for finding these out, but at the same time boo them for spoiling one of the many surprises that help make E3 great.
But yeah, cool! Ryu and Roy!
I don't know if I can contain my hype! I was already so hyped about Lucas returning tomorrow and now potential confirmation that my favorite character from Melee is indeed returning? And I'm always up for new characters! Especially ones I actually know. Can't wait to play as Ryu! Looks like he gets his stage in the game as well? Smash U definitely needs some more stages. I can't wait to see what that's all about.
Damnit, hackers!
Gee, thanks for putting spoilers in the title.
The bitterness from some people in here is pathetic and so childish. So because capcom is not releasing SFV or any other SF game on Wii U, Nintendo should not have Ryu as a playable character in smash bros. Sorry guys but listen to yourselves. Sounding like little kids who can't get there own way.
Solid snake was playable in smash bros remember. Don't Remeber people complaining and saying it was wrong because Wii never had a MGS game.
RYU in smash bros can only be a good thing. There is no downside to this.
There are very few characters less exciting to add to Smash than one from a different fighting game. One of the biggest reasons new characters in Smash are exciting is because we get to see how they adapt them from completely different genres to fight.
Please not let Roy be the same as he was in Melee. We don't need yet another Marth clone.... now we have 3 Marths, one Robin and one Ike.
Oh well, atleast we now know for sure (although it was pretty obvious from the start) that Roy and Ryu are going to come in Smash 4 probably going to be revealed this E3. So guess two surprises spoiled already, this as well as Hyrule Warriors on 3DS.
Hopefully the Smash ballot will still have more characters rather than just 1 or 2
As much as I've said I hoped Roy doesn't return due to him being a clone, I hope maybe they're giving him a unique moveset this time? That said, he looks awesome, and I may just add him to my list of mains. Gotta love that fire sword.
Personally, I don't have any problems with Ryu either.
@Peach64 I'm glad you said that. Ryu is an icon just as much as megaman, and in a game full of iconic characters he belongs there. His inclusion doesn't need to be an indication of anything more. If anything it's nostalgic of both series' roots, with megaman having his start on the Nes and street fighter 2 (the sequel which kicked up the popularity of that series) having it's first proper console port on the SNES. Capcom may not be giving it their best as of late but I look at these inclusions as Nintendo celebrating these true legends
Ryu, sweet! Bringin' back my childhood!
Also, Roy. Uh...whee?
Please don't be true... I really hope this is fake....
@kobashi100
There is plenty of downside to it, development time being put into a character that gets way to much attention.
Don't come in here all high and mighty-- Ryu doesn't belong in Smash Bros. At least Konami pretended to support nintendo in the gamecube era, Capcom has all but disconnected itself. There is absolutely NO point in having Ryu in Smash Bros. If this is real, I'm going to be sick.
I should have just finished watching Orange is the new black but no I wanted to see news for Nintendo. Thanks for spoiling tomorrow Nintendolife.
This close to E3 - this really should have been spoilered - even if it isn't confirmed.
@willgord I absolutely second that- it's getting annoying now after the hyrule warriors stuff the other day. Just have a headline saying 'spoilers new smash characters' and have the info in the main story. It's not hard...
Ummm...and can I ask why everybody is complaining about this (aside from spoilers)? I would think people would be excited about Ryu (and Roy too from all the demand for him to return).
@OorWullie
This may be less about prepping us to buy Street Fighter as it is appealing to Street Fighter fans to buy Smash.
@siavm
Season 3, already halfway done with it myself
Give me a break already. Come on. There are tons of free fighters for the PC that have Ryu and many other home-made characters.
I mean great the creators made an Ryu run around for the test engine. HA HA HA.
I think Ryu in Smash is awesome!! now we need Earthworm Jim.
I really hope there's at least one more DLC character because these DLC leaks are really getting on my last nerve.
@KirbyKirbyKirby
I feel the same way, because not a whole lot of people asked for Ryu and Roy, and to me there both come off bland as heck.
Sakurai: "We have have enough sword fighters, so I've removed Chrom. Btw, here's Roy."
Also thanks NintendoLife for spoiling tommorow, this was just the reminder to leave me in no suprise tommorow.
I hate getting all these spoilers before E3 (this can either be shown tomorrow or the Digital Event) just because we aren't getting SFV and Capcom already has a character in this game doesn't make the inclusion unnecessary. I for one am happy he's in, we barely have "fighting game" characters in this series and Ryu is one of the most iconic. Maybe if Capcom haven't shat on their fanbase Ryu would have been a more enjoyable inclusion
Well, Ryu and Roy weren't really a surprise as they were 'found' a couple of months ago.....along with 5 empty character slots. So we have Lucas (announced) and Ryu and Roy (discovered and now leaked) which leaves 2 character slots for tomorrow. Could be Nintendo play the internet game very well.
I hope there's some DLC character tester or something. I'm looking into Ryu as an alternative to Little Mac because of the former's air-game... I don't like the idea of buying Ryu(or any DLC character, for that matter), testing him out, getting disappointed with his stats/moveset, and then dumping him in the shadows of the character select screen.
I just know I would have taken some potential fighters more willingly. Just saying.
Looks promising!!!! I'll probably pick up both characters especially if Ryu and his stage are bundled.
YYYYYEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!
I agree with some of the comments! Why do we have to get spoiled??? 😞 stupid internet I should stay off it the week leading up to E3
I'm kind of glad we got spoiled because I would've got excited for nothing if this is all they're revealing in the Smash Direct! (it better not)
Also, on the E3 page, you might want to take off Zelda Wii U. That's been confirmed as not appearing.
hmm too bad, i was hoping for non-random-anime characters to be added. I mean: Shulk (even the name sucks), marth, Ike, Lucina, Robin; nobody i play with even knows who they are, and they all look the same to me.
I'm watching this, I dont know about you guys but I'm not getting spoiled.
Ugh.
Any Smash hype I had is dead. I'm not even going to bother watching the official reveal tomorrow.
You'd think they would have learned by now not to put this sort of game data in updates before announcing it. They know people like to snoop around for secrets.
I have zero interest in Ryu or even Street Fighter in general, but Ryu's legacy was really born on the SNES. And sure, the newest games aren't coming to Wii U, but to say that Capcom doesn't support Nintendo is simply not true. Monster Hunter is essentially Nintendo exclusive at this point, and I seem to remember a Street Fighter game on 3DS in recent years. Plus, I dare say that Capcom is the largest third party supporter of the Wii U Virtual Console.
Or, if you really can't get over it, just don't buy him and he stays out of your game entirely. Wow, that was easy...
@Shiryu Why do I have the feeling Ryu is going to be over powered or only used by spammed?
I wonder if Capcom will ever bring a Street Fighter to a Nintendo home console...
So if the code is already in the game then that means it's ready! So is Nintendo purposely delaying it?
@TreesenHauser I've seen a lot of people say Ryu is "out of place" and I seriously don't get it! How is a fighting game icon out of place in a fighting game???
Am I the only one who thinks part of the fun will be getting Kirby to yell "Hadoken!"
Hooray for Ryu, don't care for Roy. Would like Chibi-Robo, particularly stage wise, with the cool music. Bayonetta or Viewtiful Joe would be great as well
YES CONFIRMED
Nice!!! Been wanting to play as Roy since i didn't have melee. I heard he's a great character! Although for Ryu and Roy to join smash maybe there's a big secret nintendo is waiting to reveal at e3. Can't wait for the juicy details! All aboard the e3 hype train! Whoooohooooooo!
Really? No spoiler warning? No vague headline of "next characters found in code of Smash patch"? Just out there in the ***** open? Thanks for killing tomorrow's reveal for me.
Oh, and Rosebud was the Sled, Vader is Luke's Father and Bruce Wayne is Batman.
Well that surprise was ruined. I hate when this stuff gets shown before the cool videos they like to show. Knowing how Sakuri was with spoiling Subspace Emissary it probably aggravated him as well.
Capcom gets another character but not sega...
Meanwhile, Lucas comes out tomorrow...
Maybe now I can finally pull off a Shoryuken without having an aneurysm.
@AlexOlney
This is the best comment ever.
I'DLIKESOMEPOUNDCAKE!
@chiefeagle02 Apparently so do Roy and Ryu, as well as the new stages and Mii stuff.
I am really hoping that, that wasn't going to be the BIG reveal during their Direct. The inclusion of both of them doesn't surprise me. Good choices. Glad to be able to not only use a great Melee character again and another video game icon. I still really want another Metroid Character though. Give Samus some love please.
Very good to see Ryu in action. I'll be getting him of course. Hope we have a Chun-Li or Ken trophy as well.
I understand Ryu , but flipping Roy? We don't need 3 Marths Sakurai, literally nobody besides some Japanese smash fans wants Roy back. Just make him a alt for the sake of not having 50 different Marths. If he's not going to be like Project M's Roy then Sakurai can kiss my money good bye.
@Guybrush20X6 Lol... who doesn't know those things about those movies? Unless you have lived in a cave your whole life or just came out of the womb, I don't see how you wouldn't know those.
I do have to agree with your above statement though. I first saw it in IGN and was kinda PO'd and came here hoping that NL would at least make it more vague.
I doubt we're getting anything street fighter related but maybe we're getting Nintendo Vs Capcom
@Peach64 Megaman hasn't had a game for any console fod a while, Street Fighter on the other hand is having a new entry in the series that's going to skip Wii U. Did megaman have a game that was skipping Nintendo platforms? No.
About a month go I was pretty vocal about the way things were going 3rd party wise hopefully this is a sign things are changing.
About a month go I was pretty vocal about the way things were going 3rd party wise hopefully this is a sign things are changing.
I feel like I would have been happier with th things like this in the past before I had the time to read internet comments. "Too many FE reps", and "too many swords already" is showing up again. I think I'm just going to choose to be happy anyway. I'm not a Pokemon fan but in never complained about all of them like this.
@Chaoz Roy is actually canon in a worldwide FE. All you have to do is get A rank support between Eliwood and Ninian in Fire Emblem (GBA). Also he was rather popular among Melee fans.
The amount of people who are disappointed in Ryu being included astounds me. All the other DLC characters have already been playable in Melee and Brawl, so at least this time we're getting a new character. And who cares that there haven't been any Street Fighter games on Nintendo home consoles in years? Did anyone cry when Snake was in Brawl, despite MGS being a Sony series? On the other hand, I hope this means a new Capcom fighter for Wii U. Since it cant be SFV, maybe Street Fighter Alpha 4? Or even Tatsunoko vs. Capcom 2?
Okay, this really surprised me. Ryu looks really great in his design, better than SF4 IMHO. But yeah, I like to see who is coming next and don't worry about spoilers, because they never spoiled my fun in gaming ;D
@OorWullie its not capcoms choice to make sf5 PS4 exclusive, it wouldn't have been made if Sony didnt fund it, in the same way bayonneta2 wouldnt have been made if Nintendo didnt fund it so dont be a moany fanboy
Awesome! Ryu seems unusual, but I'm very hyped for both.
i hope atleast roy is real
WHOOO! ROY"S BACK?!
Holy crap the amount of complaints in the comment section. I swear Sakurai doesn't need to do anything for you meanies but he still does
@AugustusOxy This is real. Why? No hacker in a day will make this just to mess everyone and it's gameplay! Ha! Guess were going to have a sick person after this.
Well... I just hope we don't get a whining and crying tomorrow if this is found just to be more unused code which is often found in games.
This is amazing but i feel sad for Sakurai i bet he was happy showing us all this info and now it's all shown! That happiness went to pissed that guy who leaked this can kiss his job goodbye.
Still has fingers crossed for Tails the flying fox
I think Ryu is a cool addition and it makes sense what with him being in a fighter already. Roy will be interesting to try out!
At this rate Nintendo might as well just air the direct now.
Still hoping for wolf.
Fake! Video Edition.
No continue gameplay. Videos of 9 seconds only. When is true, the videos have many more duration.
Poor renderized pics of the models on a editor.
Poor renderized pics of the new scenario.
All fake. Videos and pics.
I hope the whole "vote for your fighter" campaign wasn't a marketing gimmick...
@Mr_Rawky I would be really surprised if Ryu and Roy came out tomorrow, considering the special presentation is coming AFTER the Lucas DLC is made available.
Looks legit....All we need is an official confirmation.. And somehow pichu for the whole melee cast..
@AlexOlney Yeah! XD
This is fake.
Wow, that's crazy. I would have went with Chun Li but having Ryu is awesome. Oh and welcome back Roy, I guess.
@chiefeagle02 I'm pretty sure the presentation is before becomes available.
*Lucas
@OorWullie
I can guarantee you we're not getting a new Earthbound anytime soon, so should the Lucas DLC get canceled as well? Should the Duck Hunt duo, R.O.B., Pacman and Mega Man be taken out of the game too?
@Everyone whining about spoilers: Here's a thought... If you want some surprises for E3 or official reveals, then AVOID GAMING SITES AND CLICKING ON LINKS! Gosh, it's not rocket science!
@OorWullie They do still support the Virtual Console at the very least with Street Fighter and other Capcom franchises. No doubt they'll probably add the GBA port of SFII next week to celebrate this since it's been rated for awhile.
@KirbyKirbyKirby The Ballot remains open till October. Ryu and Roy are not part of that but rather just planned DLC they were going along with regardless.
sighs Guess no new interesting characters for me then...
This is quite the news to wake up by, I guess this means I should eat more cake before sleeping from now on.
@BlueNitrous street fighter alpha 4 no chance on Wii U. Tatsunoko vs capcom 2 only if Nintendo fund it.
Is that a new design? Anyway, finally a DLC I WANT to buy.
So all the Melee veterans are back! ...all the good ones, anyways...
@Captain_Toad No love for Young Link?
I still think their is a third character up their sleeves
RYU!!! OMG!!!
Sakurai doesn't like leaks. Don't be surprised if he doesn't show this just because of the leak. He'll save it for another occasion.
@FlashBoomerrang Something to keep in mind is that this is data taken from DLC patches. The trailers for Ryu would likely not be on there and Roy might not even get a trailer.
Now, a 9 second video might not be fake if you think about one thing. These videos look like the ones that are played when you beat Classic Mode on the Wii U version. Which, if the data is present in the patch would make sense being there.
Now saying its 100% real, but these videos are kinda making me think the rumors are true.
@Rhydas Why indeed. I'll never get the hype for a character who is already from a 2D fighting game, and who's gonna be Sony exclusive this generation.
As for Roy, as much as I like Fire Emblem, I can think of several other series that need additional characters in the game more.

@OorWullie Maybe it is just for the purpose of adding a character that makes sense to Smash and isn't meant to be an advertisement for anything?
Ryu doesnt fit. Snake was interesting because hes not a FIGHTING GAME CHARACTER. Smash is interesting because theyre characters from non fighting games fighting. Having ryu in smash is pointless and diminishing.
We still have the ballot characters to look forward to!
@Spectra_Twilight I hope he gets through! And if not then Layton will be fine.
I love Ryu and Street Fighter II as much as the next guy, but Nintendo should not allow characters from games that are long gone from Nintendo hardware.
I liked Snake on Brawl, but hated the fact that Wii got precisely zero Metal Gear Solid games. I know the 3DS has Super Street Fighter 4, but if Wii U doesn't get some love from Capcom, the character should not be there.
Hopefully we get Nintendo vs. Capcom out of the deal.
Ugh, I really wish that this article wasn't on the face of this news site. It's one day until the Smash announcement and if Sakurai announces these characters tomorrow, and the rumor is true, it's going to be a muted surprise. The article should have been less obvious as to what the rumor is. Make it so that those that want the spoiler will get what they want, and those that want to just wait one day and be surprised can be cautious but secure. Say "code found that rumors two extra characters in Smash"------- ambiguous
Way to sound like sour grapes, can some of you be less jaded? There shouldn't be a deeper reason to have Ryu in here other than money and fanservice, enjoy it for what it is and not for what you want it to be.
Partypoopers.
Spoiler Alert... couldn't you put something like "Two new mysterious characters unofficially confirmed for Smash Bros" instead? It ruins the surprise...
@Samurai_Goroh This. It's no secret that Nintendo fans like Street Fighter - over 1 million of us bought the Street Fighter 4 port on 3DS (many of us probably already owned it on another platform or sales may have been higher) yet Capcom shaft us with Street Fighter 5 (and also the new Resident Evils. Despite Revelations selling best on a Nintendo platform).
The company doesn't deserve this kind of promotion from Nintendo.
........Having said that I can't wait to play Ryu and buy a Ryu amiibo.....
@Mr_Rawky You are correct. The presentation is at 7:40am while Lucas will be available at 8am. My mistake.
Why is everyone working on the social media side of Japanese companies a complete effing moron? How hard is it to make sure your video is private? Thanks for ruining tomorrow. Guess there's no more reason to be hyped for anything next week, it should all be revealed through YouTube by Sunday.
God, the amount of complaining here is astounding. We weren't even promised DLC characters from the beginning, and now everyone sounds entitled to the characters they want. And anyone that complains about being "spoiler" — shut up. You know it's E3 week. You didn't have to check the site.
@jakysnakydx No, Ryu being a fighting game character is exactly why he fits so well into the roster. Not counting Captain Falcon(who uses a Brawler, combo game based moveset) and Little Mac(who is a boxer, a common type of character in a fighting game), Smash has never had a straight fighter in the roster.
So, I don't see how it is pointless. You can't even argue that Ryu is out of his element fighting against Mario given Capcom makes him a staple character in every VS game.
My opinion is this, if Ryu can throw down with Spider-Man, Dr. Doom, Rocket Racoon, Magneto, and the Hulk without anyone blinking an eye, they why is everyone so opposed to him being in Smash? That's one of the main reasons why he always gets picked for cross-over games.
Not only is he the most famous, well-know, and popular fighting game character ever, he's also the one who is the most straight up in terms of his personality and gameplay. Which means Ryu fighting Marvel characters is fun for that novelty alone.
Its fun to see Ryu outside of his own series, because we see him fighting things that are not only outside his element, but technically more powerful then he is.
So, there is fun in seeing Ryu fight the Hulk and now if this leak is true, Palentania.
I want to see Ryu fight Mario. If nobody has any issue with him being in ever VS ever made, then I don't see the problem now. We finally have a straight-up classic style Fighting game character on the roster. Ryu being in add variety.
I'm glad about the inclusions of these 2, but at the same time, this killed all hopes of getting Zero (Megaman) into the game. Here's to praying Nintendo opens up to more 3rd parties for Smash so that maybe Zero can make it, even though he didn't have much of a chance beforehand. bit of a Zero fan
I'm glad they include Ryu and brought back Roy but for once Sakurai needs to make changes to Roy from his Melee version so he doesn't play like Lucina and Marth. Also with Matt Bozon tweet a few weeks ago, it looks like Shantae may also coming to Super Smash Bros. as well.
@ Everyone saying that Capcom "doesn't deserve having Ryu in Smash".
Quit acting so entitled and drop the elitist attitude.
Corporate politics mean nothing. That's not how business works. If Nintendo/Sakurai sees a money opportunity and get to appease fans, they'll go for it.
Also, since when does Capcom not support Nintendo hardware? Does the 3DS suddenly not count as Nintendo hardware? Capcom has supported the 3DS extensively. Just because the Wii U hasn't received anything, doesn't mean Capcom doesn't support Nintendo.
@C-Olimar If the Wii U got shafted on Street Fighter V, then the 360, PS3, XB1, and PS4 got shafted on Bayonetta 2. Sony funded Street Fighter V, just like Nintendo funded Bayonetta 2.
Interesting how the fighting game community including Street Fighter fans and competitive Smash players are pretty much embracing Ryu, while Nintendo fans have mixed to negative reactions. I must admit that Ryu feels out of place, but I'm definatly not disappointed that he's included ! The only thing that disappoints me is that some fools jumped at the chance to leak the info that was gonna be huge news for tomorrow's reveal oh well, will still watch and I'm still hyped
@DThrow_UAir Moany fanboy? Come on now.Would you not find it strange if Sony were to have a special show to kick off E3 to reveal Bayonetta as a character in one of their big games, while at the same time Nintendo announce Bayonetta 3 as an exclusive to Wii U?
@IceClimbers But this is the Age of entitlement!
Personally, I'm not that excited for Ryu as I would have prefered more classic Nintendo Characters but I know Sakurai only wants to add characters that provide something new and different so from that standpoint Ryu should be a good addition. And good to finally see Roy back.
I do think NintendoLife could have kept the giant picture Ryu off the main page though.
I'm not watching this; I'll save it for E3.
Also I really wish this guy would become an "Amibbo" smash unlockable character already.
That is all "Smash Brothers" really needs along with "K-Rool and the Kremlings Baseball team".
@PrincePeach92 without "StreetFighter 2" most of 2d games we see today would not exsist. Capcom back in the 1990's was the most popular game company on the planet. There was not one place to go without that.
Also SNES SF2 was the only true port of the "StreetFighter Rainbow" hack from the arcades. Streetfighter brought martial artist enthusiast, and movie fans together with videogame people.
I mean seriously capcom was the only company making anything of this sought. Also it makes for gags when viewing the American animation TV series.
In fact Capcom themselves made an nitch with just about everything they did. It was amazing.
Why Roy? We don't need another Marth clone, it was cool in Melee but not anymore. Please!
With two of Capcom's most iconic characters showing up in Smash, we technically and finally have the Nintendo Vs. Capcom we've been asking for!
Sidenote: I cant believe Capcom officially gets 2 reps in Smash. Not even Sega got that luxury. And the queston still remains, who gets an in when the Smash ballot closes?
@Spectra_Twilight ...And Professor Layton!
Roy's inclusion is stupid. We already have a Marth clone, plus he's one of the worst Lords in any FE game. There was a good reason he was removed. It's insane that Fire Emblem has as many reps as Zelda. In what world does that make any sense?
On the other hand, Ryu's inclusion is cool. He's the face of the most popular fighting game in the world. Plus most SF games have been on Nintendo systems.
Amazing how people are complaining that its a spoiler, yet their victory themes were already in the game. Besides who said they won't announce another character at the Digital Event?
@owenMILAN you mean tommarrow right?
@MasterWario this is for tomorrow not e3
Ryu is coing to be soooo boring i juste pray that all this is still fake.
NES has metal gear
GameBoyColor has metal gear solid ghost babel
GameCube has metal gear solid twin snake
Nintendo3DS has metal gear solid 3D
And Snake was relevant and surprising.
Ryu is an icon , but a 2D fighting game icon ... Everything SmashBros DOES NOT NEED!!!
PacMan, Megaman yeah that sounds thrilling...Ryu...
Roy is added for the same reason Mewto came back, the same reason Zelda and Sheik then Samus and ZeroSuitSasmus where split into 2 character...the same reason Doc Mario came Back...the same reason Smash4 is more paced than Brawl : THE PROJECTM BRAWL MOD POPULARITY
I WANT SNAKE BACK!!!
Here's hoping Guile's Theme is one of the music tracks selectable for the Street Fighter Stage.
Also, I guess Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden is not coming to smash.
Watching Ryu fight reminds me a bit of Project M's Ryu.
I'm going to join the legion of folks who are suggesting that you Nintendo Life columnists put leaks like this behind spoiler tags, ESPECIALLY so close to the presentation! Unconfirmed or not, it's really unkind of you to so blatantly spill on something like this.
@OorWullie
Thank you for this.
@JWeb23 Maybe out of place was the wrong term, my bad. It's just... so unexpected. I'm definitely not gonna argue it, it's pretty darn cool he's gonna be part of Smash Bros. I can't wait to get the DLC for sure
Ryu is like the grandfather of fighting games, seeing him in Smash is awesome, even if I've never played a Street Fighter game in my life. Roy is another clone, but you have to admit, his model is pretty epic.
Gotta feel bad for Sakurai, though.... All he needed was one more day...
Man all this pre e3 spoilers is ridiculous. Anyways I see no point in Ryu being in smash if were not getting SF5 for Wii U.
People people. A little respect for Ryu if you please. This is Mr. Fighting Games himself were talking about.
Can we please STOP with the "Ryu shouldn't be in because they're hasn't been any recent SF games on Wii U." The 3rd party characters don't get it because "they have new games coming out for the Wii U." They get in due to their legendary status as a video game character.
Also it's funny how bitter and overly sensitive these Nintendo purists are. lol
News is news. When we start censoring the news, how far should it go?
Gah. I wish I didn't see this before tomorrow. I'm confused about the inclusion of Roy, as I remember Sakurai not including Chrom for the reason of no unique abilities/too many sword-fighters. Nevertheless, I'm excited, but disappointed this had to be revealed. It must be annoying for the team, how there's always some information that gets out before they try to surprise us.
Usually Nintendo is great at keeping secrets, they must be slipping with their old age.
Lucky for me Smash holds no interest to be these days, its just become a bloated mess.
@masterpad You done praying? Cause it didn't work Ryu is still coming!
@DTFaux "And the queston still remains, who gets an in when the Smash ballot closes?" Snake? Snake? Snake!!!
@RikuKH tech dude...Roy was his own character...Ike is kinda a clone of him..
@Retro_on_theGo I wasn't the people working on Japan who uploaded the videos.
They derped and rolled out the update for a brief time.
It was enough for hackers to datamine and publish these videos.
Ryu = Cool
Roy = Meh. I'm not spending $5 on a clone of a character who already has a clone. If he's like Lucas/Wolf/Luigi than I'll buy him
@Peach64 somehow I doubt Ryu is more of an iconic character than the mascot of the company that created Ryu.
@dabaumer I don't necessarily agree with that statement but, for the sake of argument, let's say that is true. If that's the case, doesn't that only make Roy (assuming he has his original Melee moveset) more redundant?
I hope Sakurai took the time to give him a few unique moves cuz I always like Roy and thought he was cooler than Marth.
Ah god. What happened to the site? ITS TOO DIFFERENT!
By the way, Roy is a semi-clone now, not a full on clone like Lucina.
@Ichiban Everyone is "sliping their secrets"
At this point i think its more of a sneak peak.

Roy pls go
I love how people complain about Ryu not having a game on the Wii U, though he's on SSF43D on the 3DS. Oh, and Roy hasn't had a game since the GBA, minus DLC. Check yourselves, haters.
Although this looks real I have a doubt why would any code be installed now,we can presume they will be paid DLC so surely all code would install when you download them? Was code found for Mewtwo before it was available ?
And Ryu (Who I wouldn't mind in Smash) sounds strange to me isnt Street Fighter an exclusive for Playstation now?
There are even more Leaks -> http://www.nintendo-magazin.de/super-smash-bros-gameplay-leak-zu-roy-ryu-lucas-und-den-neuen-stages-aufgetaucht/
Forgot to mention Im fine with Roy as long as he is his own character not a clone
@KillScottKill The Best Selling Mega Man game is still Mega Man 2... with about 1.5 million copies sold. Street Fighter II has sold almost 15 million copies, despite the fact the majority of it's money was made in the arcade. Street Fighter is definitely a bigger name than Mega Man, and Ryu is the face of it. He's a true video game legend.
Bring em.
Roy's our boy! I'm so excited for the official announcement!
Jeez, another anime looking, Marth-like, Fire Emblem swordsman? I might buy it because I like having more characters in the roster, but Ryu is the cooler of the two.
@Mikes If we're lucky maybe Sakurai may surprise us with Shantae and Snake too.
@retro_player_22 Shantae would be an amaing addition, but personally, I'd much rather have Shovel Knight as an indie rep.
@retro_player_22 I'd be fine with either one of those. It'd be great if he told us the next character he's working on, but I doubt it.
Eating crow. I made a lot of comments in the line of "yeah right!!! you are all really dumb".... well im the dumb one now. I am amazed it actually happened.
If this is true, Capcom should release Street Fighter 5 on Wii U ou oft respect.
@blujay1524 well it has been awhile since I have played Melee, he may be more similar to Marth than I remember...but when brawl came out and Ike's neutral B was the same...and I remember Roy hitting a little harder than marth...I assumed we would not see Roy again...because Ike covered all his defining moves, and then some....maybe I should have said Ike is a more of a redefinition of Roy's few unique moves he had...but I may have to watch a video of Roy gameplay to remind myself.
@dabaumer This is the dumbest thing i've ever read.
I think M. Bison said it best:
Yes! Yes!
Roy? Yawn. (Why does he look like a palette-swap of Ike?)
Ryu? Double yawn. He makes as much sense as a Tekken game with Nintendo character costumes... wait.
Seriously? What's so out of place about Ryu in a game of boxers fighting plumbers fighting space bounty hunters fighting grand prix racers fighting fire breathing dinosaurs etc. etc. Let's not forget, Ryu's already gone up against fighting robots, Science Ninjas, sombrero cacti, and genuine super heroes. I think he'll fit in just fine.
@masterpad
Now that we're talking about Project M, I want Wolf, Squirtle and Ivysaur back. I really like their movesets.
WHY DOES EVERYTHING ALWAYS HAVE TO GET LEAKED! If it's a text leak, okay, but why this??
@WaveBoy Well I tried it again last night—trying to give it another go—and either I really am missing something with this game or it's just slightly clumsy and clunky in a few key ways.
The analog movement is fiddly at best. It's hard not to just dash past your opponent constantly, when all you're really trying to do is move in slightly closer to them. I personally would like to be able to just use the d-pad to move.
Trying to jump with precision using the analog stick is similar; with it sometimes not clearly reading the diagonals on the GamePad's analog stick. Even having it as up on an analog stick in the first place is just a bad choice anyway imo because it's a sure thing you'll press up multiples when you didn't really mean to—far more likely than on a digital pad. I know you can use the two face buttons to jump also—seriously, 3 actions assigned to jump by default—but it's still there on the analog stick, to potentially be activated by mistake at any time.
Having two face buttons set to jump just feels stupid—especially considering it's not a very natural or intuitive movement to move your index finger from the triggers to the shoulder buttons when ever you want to guard/shield. In my opinion it would have made more sense to use one of those face buttons for guard/shield instead.
I also often found the view was zoomed out too far a lot of the time, which made it a bit impractical to try to play with any precision in your strategy, because you could hardly see what was going on, with characters jumping and flailing around, at such a small scale—compelled by the fact it's also hard to just move your character small amounts to edge closer to your enemy.
Another thing that seems strange to me is have a "special move" as one of the main face buttons but a standard grab on the shoulder buttons. I think it would have made more sense to put the more regular move on the face button and the special move on the shoulder button.
Having the Smash move on the click of the analog stick also seems weird. I think that would make more sense on one of the shoulder buttons.
Personally; I would prefer something like this:
Putting those on Y and B makes sense to me because that's where your thumb naturally rests and those are basically the most standard attacks/moves you'd use most often; I'd presume.
Again, I'd put the more standard type of moves on the remaining face buttons.
I'd use the triggers over the shoulder buttons since your fingers naturally rest on the triggers. Also, triggers kinda feel like shooting a gun, a powerful and satisfying action, and these are presumably the most powerful attacks, so that kinda feels like a good match to me.
Note: I'm only getting to play this for brief stints at my brother's house, so this is just my personal experience during those time.
Note 2: I see that you can actually customise the controls—via a quick check online; so maybe it's possible this would help fix a lot of the issues I have. If all of this can be changed/customised then I'd simply say that the default setup is kinda terribly chosen and would also probably confuse most casuals with so many duplicated button functions—personally I'd rather just have blank buttons over 3 buttons doing the exact same thing (jump)—and some moves placed on awkward/fiddly to use buttons when they don't really need to be.
I find this negativity very annoying, I like the idea of Roy and Ryu. And other stages too.
And later on months later when the Smash Ballot is nearing the end I would like Banjo - Kazooie as a playable character, with there own stage too
@WaveBoy Ah; I like that there's at least options to control movement with only the d-pad.
...welp I main Ryu on everything else (hince my username) so why not smash? Nintendo: Amiibo please.
Capcom: ANYTHING please.
It does somewhat feel like Sakurai is pretty much going: "Look this is the last Smash because I've given my health and you guys still complain so I'm putting the kitchen sink in here so you will leave me alone." Some of the stuff people say about him I'm shocked no twiter or someshuch posts have turned up with him really letting the Smash community have it.
Boy does Nintendo's take on Ryu in 3D look so much better than even Capcom's own version:
vs
Even then I still wish they'd go even more towards the slightly more anime look:
(yet still in full 3D)
@Ichiban
Mario is busy in making a miracle cure he forgot he's supposed to prevent leaks.
@kirk I don't know why but to my eye everyone in street fight V looks terrible. Ryu in Smash looks 30 times better than V
@abe_hikura It's the whole "Americanised Street Fighter II SNES box art style" syndrome I mentioned earlier, imo:
It's just ugly artistry as far as I'm concerned. I mean it still takes a lot of artistic skill/talent to create art like that—it's probably better than I could do—but not good taste
@kirk I didn't mind SF4's artsyle in motion but as soon as you pause and noticed chun li's giant hands it lost its edge.
Yeah I remember those box arts and surely if we're talking about American box we have to mention (but not look directly at) megaman's where he is an weird adult
Yeah; her hands and her ginormous thighs.
Also; Mega Man box art—fugly...but kinda funny
@kirk I did love that the vita version of street fighter x tekken had that megaman "now" all middle aged and fat
Wow!
Fck the haters.. Ryu looks amazing!!
Props to Nintendo and capcom for making this happen.
OMG I am beyond excited! Also Somebody told sega that VF isn't dead? I can't believe it? ...Um Nintendo you wouldn't mind pulling a bayo 2 for VF 6 would you? ...please?
