Re: Review: Pokkén Tournament DX (Switch)

SM4SHshorts

Seems like my comment didn't go through the first time when NL was experiencing server issues, so here goes nothing...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Pokkén Tournament really isn't a great game in my opinion. I love Pokémon, and I love fighting games, so naturally I thought I'd love this hybrid concept, but I put it down just shy of two weeks after playing the first version on the Wii U.

It just seems like a meld of mechanics thrown together - it's both overwhelming and underwhelming. I could never really grasp it, despite trying for days. There wasn't that "click" moment that I get with other games I fail to understand at first.

As much as I want this for collection purposes, there's no way I'm forking out 40 odd quid for five additional fighters and what not to try and give it another shot - especially when I'm content enough when it comes to fighting games, with Smash Wii U, ARMS, and even USFII still keeping me occupied.

The next Pokémon game I'll be purchasing is the core adventure for the Switch, that's right, Pokémon US and UM can go do one too. Enough of the double-dipping already, aside from you MK8 Deluxe - you the best

Course I'll be getting the inevitable Smash 4 Switch version, which may sound hypocritical, but you can't go wrong with Nintendo's giants like MK and Smash being playable on a platform such as the Switch, with the dual functionality it offers.

Just my two cents though!

@Nincompoop Luck is involved in everything yes, but using the phrase "luck-based" in your initial statement is a different story entirely. Mario Kart is not a luck-based game, at least in my eyes. A person with infinite Stars but no skill with driving and drifting will still lose to a player who can do the former without any Stars.

Perhaps we're missing each other's points here, enjoy your Sunday!

@Nincompoop I see your point, but at the same time that's an extreme case scenario in terms of luck. Most of the time, players aren't fortunate to have such a hand, so the game comes down to reading your opponents (maybe based on what they've done in the past), whether they'll be able to call your bluff, changing your strategy mid-game based on new cards turned etc. Point being, there's a lot more to poker than simply "luck", though luck is of course a major factor in the game.

Back to your initial point though, luck is a factor in many, many games, but saying that "Any games that requires rolling dice is luck-based" is a statement I have to disagree on. The aforementioned Catan is a good example, and I'm sure there are many other games that follow suit. Heck, even Mario Party is a good example (well at least the older ones) - you can get lucky with dice rolls, but winning minigames, utilising items correctly, and choosing to go for certain Bonus Stars etc. removes the sole factor of rolling a die as the game being purely luck-based. Once again, this is not so much the case with Monopoly Gamer, hence why I mentioned that point in the "Cons" section.

Perhaps we agree to disagree!

@Nincompoop Hmm, disagree! There are many board and card games that contain an element of luck (dice roll, drawing cards etc.), but what you do with your assets and how you play are what counts.

Catan is a perfect example. Sure you need fortune from the dice, but I'd say it's more about what you do in your scenario with what you've got than it simply being "luck-based". I've seen many players climb their way to victory despite getting unlucky during rounds. Monopoly Gamer on the other hand, doesn't offer as many avenues to be a strategist, making it more about luck.

And though you mentioned dice, Poker is another fine example (with the luck of the cards drawn replacing the luck of the dice roll), but it's still more of a mind game than simply luck-based. Again, it's what you do with your assets and how you outmanoeuvre your opponents mentally - you could still win with the worst hand.

Nope! This game was my personal biggest letdown on the Wii U. Just couldn't grasp the mechanics, and once I kind of did, I wasn't motivated to play it after 2 weeks. And that's me saying this being a big fan of Pokémon and fighting games in general.

With Smash on the Wii U and USFII + ARMS on the Switch, I've got enough fighter/brawler games to keep me content. I'll continue to aim to 100% Mario + Rabbids, and the next stop will be Odyssey!

I've got all three squid colours, got my unlockables from the green and purple ones, but for some reason my orange one doesn't register Anyone know why? I've tried everything - I haven't touched that amiibo since buying it a year ago. Sucks that its functionality will go to no use.

Re: Talking Point: How ARMS Can Punch Its Way Into Competitive Gaming

SM4SHshorts

Completely agree with this writer's notion of ARMS' control options. I've always said that if I bothered to get used to the Pro Controller's configuration (there are some oddly placed button inputs), I'd likely be a better player. However, it sucks the fun out of the game - the game is at its very best when using the Joy-Cons in my opinion.

I'm going to sit this one out in terms of going the extra mile "competitively" and instead enjoy it in a more casual manner (although I did place 2nd in Nintendo UK's ARMS influencer tournament ).

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Pokémon Direct and Its Big Reveals?

I said in an earlier article that if it was Pokkén Tournament 2 (DX), I'd be annoyed. And boom, first announcement was that.

I may be a Smash head, but PT was an awful game - I tried so hard to get into it initially, but the mechanics were just bad and nothing revolutionary to me. Then you have something like ARMS, which really is refreshing and fun. So now we have three fighting games on the Switch; USFII, ARMS, PTD - which lessens the chance of a Smash port coming soon at all (maybe I was a fool to think that it would).

I'm definitely not one of the Gen IV remake campers, but I'd have still taken that over US & UM. Personally though, a single game akin to Yellow and Crystal etc. in the form of "Stars" or whatever for both the 3DS and the Switch is what would've saved it for me. Better yet (and here's me being overly optimistic), a unique 3D Pokémon Switch adventure, Pokémon Stadium 3, or Pokémon Snap 2 is what I've always wanted.

Ah well, at least my favourite gen has come to the VC - not that I'm going to buy it
