It may seem like ancient history now in internet land, but Masahiro Sakurai defied early leaks to deliver a rather entertaining Super Smash Bros. video presentation prior to E3. A whole lot of DLC content was released right away, too, including three characters, new stages and a batch of Mii Fighter outfits.
In his most recent Famitsu Weekly article - translated by Source Gaming - Sakurai-san talks a little about how that content came together, re-iterating much of what's been said in previous interviews and within the presentation itself. It's clear that the designer and his team enjoyed working on that content.
Notably, though, Sakurai-san has confirmed that Ryu, Roy and Lucas weren't taken from the Fan Ballot, as development had begun on them before voting was even opened. As a result "from now until the end" the focus is on "fan service", with several more characters on the way.
There is a fighter ballot on the official Smash for Wii U/3DS website. We've received an extremely large number of votes, but of course, Lucas, Roy, and Ryu were in developed even before the ballot was created. I had a grasp on their popularity and demand, though.
From now until the end, it is going to be fan service, but I can't keep the development team together forever, so there's only going to be several more characters. I also ask for your patience, as we need time to develop more content.
There's still plenty of hope for those campaigning for specific characters in the Fan Ballot; it'll be fascinating to see what Sakurai-san and his team produce next.
Which character do you most want to see in Super Smash Bros.?
With thanks to Jeremy for the heads up.

Been a while since I voted in that poll. I should go and fill out a ballot for Strong Bad.
Several more characters! Nice!
SEVERAL new characters? I was only expecting one more, two at most. Glad I was wrong (Well, unless by "several" he meant more than one...)
I know he's already an assist trophy, but Shadow would make for a great fighter in Smash. It'll be nice to have another character represent the Sonic series, instead of the Blue Blur himself.
So this means the smash ballot will have multiple winners? I'm assuming it will go in a 1st, 2nd and 3rd sort of way which would be lovely for the fans. Now a update on the ballot would be LOVELY.
@Sonic9009 I was thinking the same of Dark Samus. She would have been a great villain representing the Metroid series, and she could have been a very unique fighter.
Also, does Ryu just have really skinny ankles or is there something wrong with his right ankle in that picture...?
Nice! It sounds like from here on out, most of the characters going into development will be fan-favorites and ballot choices. For me personally, I'm still really crossing my fingers for Inklings, Paper Mario, and Shantae! Oh, and I'm REALLY hoping for Fourside to come back as stage DLC. That stage was the bomb in Melee, probably my top favorite Smash stage period!
@Sonic9009 I think so too, as his chaos control could make for some interesting moves. Also, when Sakuri said "several", how much does that actually mean? To me that means 5-7, but I don't want to get my hopes up too much. Maybe it's a mistranslation?
Professor Layton must be in it. He's perfect.
A focus on fan service?
GokuKing K Rool confirmed!@SuperWario Those 3 fighters could be an amazing fit for the roster! I'd buy them day one, unlike Roy and Lucas which honestly I don't care much.
@Koopa-King
Makes sense to keep us in the dark about survey results.
What if they couldn't get the rights to the first place character?
@Giygas_95 I think Rundas from Prime 3 would be better in Smash. Dark Samus would delve too much into "clone" arguments.
@IceClimbers Isn't King K Rool still owned by Rare though?
I know this is making demands of the development team but I personally hope they include a sprinkling of new new characters and not just release characters left over from Meele and Brawl. If they do anymore third party characters my most wanted character would be Goemon: rich Nintendo legacy on SNES and N64, character who's due a comeback much like Megaman. Although he is a Konami character - it's highly likely his Japan only DS game will be his last with the way Konami are probably gonna play things moving forward
Well, back to the poll! Voting for K. Rool and Inkling. However, because we now have 4 guest characters, my hopes for Rayman and Shovel Knight have started to decrease rapidly, so I'm just not even gonna bother.
BRING BACK THE ICE CLIMBERS!!
So, are we getting more BESIDES the ballot? If so... man, crazy-sized roster.
@Grumblevolcano
99% sure that Nintendo owns EVERYTHING Donkey Kong. Plus, Kremlings are enemies in Smash Run. Why would they be allowed, but K. Rool not allowed?
I never really cared much for FFXIII, yet would KILL to have Lightning in this new Smash because she would kick so much ass (she's always been a great fighter, not so much a great character plotwise... XDD ).
I know we already have a lot of pokemon but I really want one of generations not represented (2,3, and 5) to get a representative. One of the generation three starters would work best most likely.
Also, this one is never going to happen but I would freak out if Quote from Cavestory or Shovel Knight got in.
As for actually realistic King K. Rool (though I don't have much experience with the DK Country games) would be awesome as well as another Zelda Villain like Ghirahim (Though he is an assist trophy but someone somewhere).
now the question remains 'who are these seven characters thst we'll be getting?'
@Grumblevolcano King K Rool is owned by Nintendo.
@majinx07 several doesn't mean seven.
Dictionary: "more than two but not many."
@Koopa-King So if Shrek gets the most votes then he would be put in the game? That would be great.
Everyone should take that "several" word choice with a bit of salt. According to the source, that might be a translation thing.
"Me and the editor discussed this a lot and several was what we think was most accurate. As I said in the footnote 数 does mean several, and it’s better than “some,” which means more “an unspecified amount” than a range of an amount."
So yeah, more than two or so but I wouldn't expect half a dozen more characters.
Shantae please make into the game ;_____;
@nessisonett No, Shrek isn't getting in. Only characters who originated in a video game can become fighters in Smash Bros. That means Shrek and Goku aren't getting in.
Several? Then that means more than two
Hopefully Wolf makes the cut.
Anyone who thought they were from the smash ballot has no idea how development in gaming works.
7 more characters confriemd!
wolf, snake, and pichu pls.
I personally think there's 1-2 more non-ballot characters getting in, one of which is Wolf.
I think overall, we'll get Wolf, King K Rool, and a few more (Isaac, Shantae, Inkling, or Chibi-Robo)
@IceClimbers Awww I wanted them to use moves from Shrek Super Slam
If he's focusing on fan service that can only mean good things for Isaac, so long as he gets enough votes to make an impression.
@IceClimbers Fair enough, I wasn't sure.
To be honest when "Fan Service" was mentioned, rather than top picks in the ballot I initially thought of Smash-Amie being confirmed which would have caused even more issues for Nintendo than FE Fates will.
Thanks, but I had my fill with Smash Bros already. Played it for about 15 hours and moved on. The lack of a history mode really put me off this time.
@Grumblevolcano Zero Suit Samus is the only character that would be in a Smash Amie feature
I suspect Wolf will be one of them. Adding him would be an advertisement to players to go buy Starfox Zero and there's opportunity to make him better, like basing his character model on his Zero appearance, and giving him his own Final Smash since Star Wolf having a Land Master made no sense (Like maybe he could call in the rest of the Star Wolf team and have them in their space craft blasting everything in sight.).
That and a reveal trailer with the Star Wolf theme would be awesome.
I just want more of those videos introducing the characters!!!
Man... The one introducing Palutena (where Pit fights Link) is one of the best videos I've seen :')
Why aren't you making a TV series of Smash Bros. Nintendo? Whyyyy!!?
Here we go:
1.Banjo Kazooie or Yooka-Laylee
2.Tetra
3.Sir Daniel Fortesque
4.Dixie Kong
5.ICE CLIMBERS!!!1
I think the fact that Lucas, Roy, and Ryu had nothing to do with the ballot (duh) might confirm that the other two placeholder slots found in the Mewtwo patch are pre-ballot as well. Wolf and Snake most likely.
I'd like to see certain series' get more characters. Like for Sonic, I hope it to be none other than Tales or possibly a bad guy, which would be Eggman. From DKC, I'd like to see Dixie, possibly King K. Rool. I'd like to see Mechon Fiona from from Xenoblade Chronicles. I'd even like to be surprised by Konami making a return and giving us Snake again along with Simon Belmont.
But there's still one character that I know most don't know, and Nintendo doesn't seem to want to remember either, developed and released specifically for North America, and that is none other than Mike Jones from StarTropics. I think he makes for an interesting character that may appear like Ness (with his Yo-Yo), but would have all his other weapons as well. PLEASE somebody put him in!
I appreciate any extra characters but personally I'm not on board with bringing back all the characters that USED to be in Smash Bros (i.e.) Snake, Wolf, Ice Climbers. I know they have a huge demand but I'm all about those new characters, especially obscure ones. Geno from Super Mario RPG. His sweet arm cannon, star beam, etc..... No one? Just me? Okay......
Kinda figured since getting Ryu would have required some talks with Capcom...I just hope Nintendo gets something out of the deal. New game perhaps?
Wonder Red please
omg goku plz. kidding.. -_-
@Grumblevolcano But don't you think she'd be a pretty unique character? It seems like she'd be way different from normal Samus based on her attacks from Prime 2 and 3 (plus she'd float off the ground like Mewtwo does).
I mean she could use attacks like the scatter shot for instance. And her up B could be sort of a phazon based shinespark rather than the screw attack.
Well, add anyone, except for king K rool. We don't need another bowser in the game
I wonder how many characters they will add more. Perhaps 3 or 4 more.
Snake and Blanc
Sorry to spam NL, but I thought of two more characters I'd love to see: Dr. Wily (tossing all kinds of inventions, gadgets, bots, etc. our way) and Ken or Akuma. I've really gotta stop hyping myself like this...
Professor Layton has my vote anyways!
Who cares, people voted for really boring stuff anyway.
Please have Wolf make it in, then I'll be content with the roster!
This is getting pretty sad. Isn't there a principle of quality over quantity? Pretty sure Sakurai has no idea of that...
Bayonetta!
Bayonetta, Sora, Isaac, and Wonder Red are my choices.
I'm glad there's going to be several new characters that means Goku and Shrek still have a chance! I'm very glad I voted for them.
hopes for Lest/Frey from Rune Factory 4 T.T
King K Rool
Bomberman
Crash Bandicoot
King. K.Rool and Yooka&Laylee
BACK TO THE SMASH BALLOT
6th FE rep Chromfirmed
as obscure as he is...i want Ristar.
@Koopa-King The character with the most votes isn't guaranteed to be in Smash, it's just a measure of popularity. In the end, it's still Sakurai's choice (and of course any third parties that might be involved) whether he wants to put that character in the game or not.
I was just kidding from earlier. The character who I do really want is Inkling Girl and Boy from Splatoon. It would be neat if you could switch between Girl or Boy like the character Robin
Dixie Kong and Rayman.
Rayman sucks give me plok!
I'd prefer Wolf to not be a ballot character. I wouldn't mind him returning otherwise. But I'd rather save ballots for new characters.
Snake... eh, I could take him or leave him. After Brawl, it hit me how much he DOESN'T have much to do with Nintendo. Ryu and Banjo have a strong history with Nintendo. Snake has next to none.
I want the character I've always wanted ever since I was expecting Brawl to be released... More than Lloyd Irving and Isaac, both of whom I love... And just about as incredibly unlikely to happen...
Lyn from Fire Emblem.
A helper item is just not enough. That badass lady deserves to be a character, but it's just not going to happen.
Wow this is great news! I think we will get 3-5 more characters and they will all be out by the end of next year at the absolute latest.
My wishlist: King K. Rool, Chibi Robo, Paper Mario, Inkling, Wolf
The next characters needs to be free.
I'm not made of money, Nintendo!
whew, the full DLC (or at least the bundles I will want) for this is going to end up costing more than the game again just like Hyrule Warriors. Guess I'll just get a few characters instead of the whole thang.
@Sample_Text It's very interesting, because the current select screen only has slots for 2 more additions, so if this "several" fits it's definition: more than two, but not many, then the select screen is going to get revamped.
my several: Wolf, Dixie Kong, Goemon (mystical ninja)
@DarthNocturnal I think Wolf getting in as a pre-ballot character is pretty likely. It'd still constitute as fan service after all. I agree that the ballot should be for newcomers (coughKingKRoolcough).
As for the characters SSB4 need:
1. Snake and Wolf - Because Brawl
2. Kratos Aurion - My favorite Tales of-character. He would also be a better choice compared to Lloyd as he can cast magic and fly with wings. His Final Smash would be something like mystic arte from the games.
Cool. I had forgotten all about that ballot but this means Bayonetta and the Inklings still have a chance (though after the success of Splatoon, Inklings might be non-ballot additions anyway).
This is the first I've heard of people suggesting Phoenix Wright... but that sounds so awesome.
Fingers crossed for Bayonetta and Glover(though I doubt Glover would make it in honestly).
Bayonetta and k.rool for me I'd like them to keep paper mario and the inklings for the next game so were not totally burned out.
@LoveSugoi We already have the Inkling costume. How much could they actually do with the character besides what we already got from Mii shooters?
Cloud. Nuff said.
They put Ristar in that Super Smash Bros Crusade fangame, so that means there're those out there who would love to see Ristar make a smashing return!

Vote Ristar plz and thx, I know I already did :3
I WANT CLOUD STRIFE!!!!!!
seriously how awesome would It be to smash with an omnislash!!!
My guesses for the next characters are King K. Rool, Wonder Red, Bayonetta, Wolf, Krystal, Simon Belmont, Snake, and Rayman. I doubt all these characters will make it, but at least a few of them will.
Inklings please.
It's great to hear that they'll still be a few characters from the polls, and hopefully people made good decisions. My hopes are starting to fade, but I'm still wanting Rayman to join the battle.
Welp, the way Sakurai puts it, I think it's now a given that K. Rool is making it in. "This is my finest hour, nobody on this earth can stop me noooooow!"
Wow I was expecting just one character from the ballot, maybe two if we were lucky. But now we're getting at least 3 more? You spoil us Sakurai.
Like others have said, I too am willing to bet that we'll be getting Wolf back. Then it's either Snake or Ice Climbers and then the winner of the Fighter Ballot, which I believe will be King K Rool. A lot of people getting their hopes up for other characters but this is probably the most realistic possibility.
@CrazyMetroid
Most people will tell you that he deserves the spot because:
1. Donkey Kong needs more representatives
2. King K Rool would be an excellent addition to the heavyweight characters
3. He has lots of potential for his moveset
I personally voted for him, myself, though I would love to see Banjo and Kazooie as well.
Also that pic. C-c-c-combo Breaker! (That still hurts women...just not as badly as guys)
@CrazyMetroid The whole game is fanservice...that's kinda the point.
Still, if I had a set of characters I don't want to see...Shrek and Goku but I hear people ask for them often.
I still miss the Ice Climbers. For me they just belong to Smash Bros. But of course there's the technical issue regarding the 3DS version...
I still think the character most worthy to be included, and having great potential is simply Bomberman. He seems to be a bit forgotten in recent years, even here he's rarely mentioned. But he remains one of THE great mascots of a company, and his move set could be very creative. I mean, just imagine a character to drop several bombs across different places of a stage, with different explosion radii... ^^
all good. I'm not too sure who i want to win the ballot but my rules for buying the DLC dose inform who i dont want. no clones. admittedly Roy looks awesome, Lucas plays nicely (compared to ness) and yay mewtwo I just don't want to pay for them. I'm cool for the likes of wolf to turn up outside of the ballet. Think he should be a preorder bonus for star fox
Ultimately we're had the third party legends Sonic, Pac-man, Mega man and Ryu (only really missing bomerman) I'm hoping for some Indie love for one and i hope they help some under reped series like DK and Metroid
Please Sakurai! Give me Ridley! Smash neeeeeeds him!
I'd vote for Rygar, Star Man from Pro Wrestling, Billy from Double Dragon, Scorpion (MK 1-4 version), Leonardo from TMNT, Joe Musashi from Shinobi, or Inking Boy/Girl.
I want either King K.Rool or Dr. Eggman. Those are the two that have the most interest for me since both Sonic and Donkey Kong don't have their rival in Smash. I would love to see at least one of them make an appearance. It would make my day.
Focusing on fan service you say? Swimsuit DLC for everyone.
I'm still voting for Simon Belmont from Castlevania, but I expect the Inklings will get it, they seem popular and would be a good fit for the franchise. I wouldn't be disappointed either.
Interesting to note that Iwata-San only suggested one character would get the vote. But above Sakurai-San indicates that there may be several. Let's hope!
@Iggly Captain Falcon in a speedo
@PaperMario64 Yeah, I tried the Inkling costumes, and it's just not the same. They really need to be shooting ink; it just doesn't feel like Splatoon when they're shooting electro-balls and firey explosions.
I understand that technically, SSB.Wii U would probably not be able to let you paint the stage in ink for spacial tactics (maybe for the next installment?), but they should at least be shooting ink and using special moves from the game.
Unfortunately, I don't think Inkling is the most popular choice. It would be lucky to be number 3, cuz I'm sure Banjo Kazooie, King K. Rool, and Ridley will beat them out, and those are just the new characters.
I really hope Wolf is already locked in and just being kept a secret. I can't see them bringing back Mewtwo, Lucas and Roy and leaving Wolf out and since he was probably my best character in Brawl I definitely want him back.
@Kaze_Memaryu Yeah, giving what the fans want is pretty sad. I agree.
Chibi-Robo and Banjo Kazooie are a must seeing as they would be PERFECT for Smash. BK already has all of the moves premade practically and with the increased moveset from Zip Lash Chibi would fit right in nicely!
@Giygas_95 Potentially she could be a unique character but you could easily say the same thing about Ganondorf but in the end he's still a Captain Falcon clone.
"From now until the end, it is going to be fan service"
The magic words I needed to hear. Bring it, Daddy Sakurai!
@IceClimbers That would be amazing, Captain Falcon would really be able to show everyone his moves in a speedo.
Pretty cool. It's a long shot, but I'd love to see Sheena from Tales of Symphonia make the cut.
Tetra, Ice Climbers and Chibi Robo would all be fantastic for me!
@TheAlbinoLion
Isn't Dark Pit already enough of a "villainous-ish" representative for Kid Icarus?
If Bayo (with Jeanne and Rosa as alternate costumes) and/or Wonder Red get in, I wouldn't need anything else in SBB
Waluigi, King K. Rool, Black Shadow, Wolf, Ice Climbers, A Rhythm Heaven Character are my hopes.
I know Waluigi won't happen though
Shovel Knight, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Bomberman
I would be happy with any original/unique characters as DLC to be honest; Bayonetta, Amaterasu, Phoenix Wright, etc. We'll probably end up with lame characters like Snake and Wolf or 'Paper Mario' (like, seriously?) based on popularity in the fighter ballot though, because apparently everyone would rather play as characters we've already had before rather than anything new or even vaguely interesting. u__u
two words:
KUNIO-KUN
@Blaze How is Paper Mario lame?
Rye's foot is gonna be in pretty bad pain once the point of impact is breached.
Sad that so many people are voting for old characters from previous games. I would love to see brand new characters, myself.
@CapeSmash Fans wanting something doesn't automatically mean it's a good thing. Smash already has too many characters, what's the point in adding even more when the game itself doesn't care about any of them?
The irony here is odd, The fighters were not from the ballot and yet he used to say they were not planning paid DLC. lol
@Grumblevolcano You want a clone? Look at Dark Pit, THAT'S a clone. Dark Pit doesn't deserve to be in Smash, Dark Samus does. I can't believe people still think she's a clone, she's completely different! Sonic doesn't need more representation, Metroid does. If independent developers on Brawl Vault can make better content than Nintendo, then something is seriously wrong. You can download everything from Mega Man to Mother Brain, that 1 or 2 people made, opposed to 100+ people at Nintendo. Excuse me if I'm getting offensive, but this is starting to get excruciatingly frusturating.
@Saiyo I second that.
I wonder how much "several" is. (come on, Popo! Come on!)
I just want the Ice Climbers back, but the stupid limitations of the 3DS went and ruined that for me.
I really don't find this an issue. The DLC character selections are great.
Axel from Streets of Rage since we got Ryu. Maybe a Tekken character too.
New stages for DLC.
Terry Bogard or bust
There's too many cool characters out there in video game land to choose from. It will be interesting to see who makes the list.
@Kaze_Memaryu Seems like you are viewing the game on your point of view. The game is quality, perhaps not in the way you want it.
I suppose you say that based that the mechanics are still the same for every fighter.
While your other reply to me sounds indeed nice (different unique mechanics for each character from what I get), that seems to be akin to more serious fighting games.
And that's the problem. Sakurai views smash mainly as a party game.
I doubt he will do something more time consuming, balancing hell that would be.
With Star Fox coming out, bringing back Wolf makes sense.
Simon Belmont
It feels weird people ask for some non Nintendo, or video game ones, I've never heard of.
But I did like playing as Snake in Super Smash Bros Brawl, I just wished he had more than 1 taunt.
I swear the only reason people are asking for Shrek is because they want the game to go down in value.
Sweet! This means there's still a chance for Ryu Hayabusa. Ninja Gaiden is a true masterpiece of old-school, NES-hard gameplay. Plus, Nintendo and Team Ninja seem to be on good terms lately...
@Gridatttack But that's exactly what throws me off: Sakurai actually WANTS Smash to be as competitive as possible (why else would anyone bother with slight balancing tweaks in most of the updates), but at the same time, he doesn't really give anyone tools within the game to do so.
Of course he wants people to have as much fun as possible, but he's aware that it's only one half of the game. But constantly adding more characters just oversaturates the game - which is why none of the characters receive any in-game dedication anymore. It's too much to handle by now.
And that's all I mean: they just throw characters in at random, without anything to accompany them, not even a tutorial. It's like telling an electrician to repair a swiss watch - he knows what the result should be, but it's too complex for him to understand the grips and intricacies.
@SkillToad
I voted at least 3 times from different computers for Geno from Super Mario RPG. His inclusion would be amazing and he has all kinds of cool attacks. His Final Smash would also be amazing.
However, I can admit that King K Rool would probably be a great addition as well.
I'd like more stages too. Also
Toadette
Dixie Kong
Lana from Hyrule Warriors
Ice Climbers
Amy
@Kaze_Memaryu I've seen your comments quite frequently in Smash posts, but all I gotta say in brief is that I am still supportive of all these fighters ad it opens up different play styles, choices and characters special to people in their own way. But, I do agree, they should ads more depth to each one by having tutorial, mastery modes like Target Smash, Board the Platforms and more that teach all of the characters functions so they can jump into competitive play easier than just repeated battles of no items, final destination. I do hope they can keep this roster for if they do massive cuts in the next game, it would hurt a significant aspect to Smash Bros and as gamers, we should demand the true potential to any game, but in case if this is Sakurai ' last Smash Bros game, I'm all for the 55+ roster with all unique functions, unless if you don't count clones and semiclones
@cartooncreator59 Truthfully, you're defintely right. Smash has established itself in part for having a large roster, so a new Smash game with fewer characters would be met with a lot of outrage.
It's kinda difficult to improve a series that has so much stuff when most of it is borderline mandatory for a continuous success, so I can only hope Nintendo finds a way.
Awesome news. With Ryu out of the equation (thank you Nintendo, btw), Knuckles and Bomberman are the other two of my three most-wanted, but I guess that's pushing it in terms of third-party characters. I'm grateful as is with Ryu!
If we're talking Nintendo specifically, I believe King K. Rool is an addition to the roster that logically fits for a multitude of reasons. I'd love to see characters representing a wider variety of franchises too, such as Black Shadow/Blood Falcon from F-Zero - or bring back Wolf from Starfox but with a completely revised moveset. Sceptile would also work as it bridges the gap between Charizard and Greninja due to being a third-gen grass starter, but we already have too many Pokés!
I'm surprised at the lack of any Castlevania support anywhere. I can't be the only person who thinks Simon, Trevor, Richter, Alucard, and Soma could be fantastic characters.
Simon, Trevor and Richter could be alternate skins (a la Olimar and Alph and the Koopalings) and could have some great versatility in their attacks (like the Dagger for B, Holy Water for Down B, Boomerang Cross for Side B that could be caught like Mega Man's Metal Blade, and some kind of leaping ability for the Up B, whip grabbing a la Zero Suit, etc)
Alucard and/or Soma would have their vast array of weapons at their disposal (swords for basic attacks, hammers for smashes, etc). Soma could have certain soul skills (especially pertaining to his final smash). I dunno. The possibilities are wild and yet I almost never see any of the old NES/SNES/64 eras of Castlevania even considered. It might be tough to get the rights from Konami but if they could get all of the games on Wii U VC I would hardly say it's impossible.
@Kaze_Memaryu I suppose I agree with you with the character dedication thing.
I sorely miss the unique break the targets mode unique to each character.
About the tutorial thing, I dont see whats the problem about it. IIRC none of the major fighting games like SF, MK have such thing, or do they?
I wonder how the next smash bros will fare when Sakurai isn't the director anymore.
@Gridatttack Street Fighter 4 got a tutorial and challenge mode for each character in one of the revisions, I think. No idea about MK, but Skullgirls, BlazBlue/Guilty Gear, and Under-Night: IN-BIRTH have these modes, as well.
But it's not really as simple as comparing Smash to these fighters: with Smash heavily emphasizing mobility and position-sensitive hit detection, it's very difficult to find advanced mechanics or strategies on your own, since the game doesn't railroad the positions of the characters - or in other words, Smash moves in every possible direction, so attacks often rely on forcing the opponent into certain situations (which the AI rarely ever does due to its strong limitations), whereas most traditional fighters have priority to gauge the effectiveness of attacks only in relation to your distance to the opponent. It's a bit difficult for me to explain, so sorry if this doesn't make much sense...
I voted for Peter Griffin from Family Guy. The game title I put for him is the Family Guy Video Game. The reason why I wanted him to appear in Super Smash Bros. For Wii U & Nintendo 3DS is because I want him to be a third party character along with Sonic, Megaman, Pac-Man & Ryu, he is one of my favorite characters of all time, and I wanted to see if Mario could go against a Family Guy character.
I doubt we'll see any more 3rd party characters. We've already got four, and even if we did get more, only the top tier in popularity have ever made it, so don't get your hopes up for the like of Phoenix Wright, Shantae, or Shovel Knight. It's also extremely unlikely that we'll ever see licensed characters like Goku or Batman. In addition to the possible return of Snake, perhaps the likes or Rayman or Lara Croft could make the cut.
Moving on to characters from previous games, I've mentioned that Snake could return, although you'd think he'd already be in there if it were as simple as just asking once again. Nobody cares about Pichu, who was nothing more than a handicapped version of Pikachu. We know the story behind the Ice Climbers' exclusion. Wolf is just too similar to both Fox and Falco to be a worthwhile inclusion. That leaves us with Ivysaur and Squirtle, who would be good candidates to return. There's just the issue of what Ivysaur could use for its Up B move now that there are no longer any exclusive tether recoveries.
Now on to new Nintendo character choices: King K. Rool is the obvious choice and clearly the biggest snub from the current roster. Isaac from Golden Sun is also a really likely candidate. While another Metroid character would be nice, Sakurai has explained the problem with Ridley, Kraid would be even worse, Dark Samus (who is already an assist trophy) and the X-infused armor from Fusion would be too much of clone characters to be interesting, I don't know if Adam or Anthony would be interesting enough fighters, and there's not really any other significant enough candidates. An inkling would be a possible choice, although that may be undermined by the fact that they're already Mii costumes. Fire Emblem has probably already been milked enough at this point, although another addition is still a possibility. We also already have enough Pokémon aside from the possible return of Ivysaur and/or Squirtle. Adding another character from Kid Icarus is a pretty good possibility, whether it's Medusa, Viridi, Phosphora, Magnus, Thanatos, or (Amazon) Pandora. More than one of them is probably asking for too much, though. Waluigi is pretty popular, although he's already an assist trophy and it would be pretty difficult to create a moveset around a guy who only appears in the sports spinoffs. Daisy is already an alternate costume for Peach. I can't think of any other notable snubs from the Mushroom Kingdom. Finally, a number of Zelda characters could make a nice fit, so I'm not even going to attempt to go through the possibilities. Just please don't make it Tingle!
Still hoping Shantae gets in.
"Only several more," he says. Well, I'll be eagerly anticipating Shovel Knight's arrival, then.
@SheldonRandoms Oh, my god, I didn't even think about Ristar! His stretchy attacks would make for some very interesting moves.
-(Of course) Returning characters: Wolf & Ice Climbers
-Goemon (Mystical Ninja/Ganbare Goemon series)
-Sora (Kingdom Hearts)
-King K. Rool (Donkey Kong series)
-Black Shadow (F-Zero series)
-.........and I think we need another female character, maybe Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury 2.
Just give me my Ice Climbers. My babies need to come home.
...King K. Rool wouldn't hurt, either.
I would still think that Peter Griffin from the Family Guy franchise should appear in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, because some of his fighting moves from the Family Guy Video Game could also be suitable for the Super Smash Bros. series, and his voice is so cool. In fact, I think the Family Guy Video Game was going to be released for Nintendo Gamecube, but was cancelled for some strange reason.
@Spectra_Twilight We already have two Capcom characters
QueenElincia from Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn
