@GrailUK while this is true, the initial bad game stigma will impact sales.
I mean take Cyberpunk for example, the hype around that was next level, had the gake actually been good, it would have sold over 50m copies by now and to be fair, thats a huge low ball imo, if Cyberpunk wasn't a mess, it would have sold similar numbers to GTA 5.
Even if they fix the game later, they'll never fix the initial bad reputation.
@Sonicka seems like a lot of guess work there buddy, got any credible sources for Nintendo development time on TOTK or are you just throwing random guesses out?
I'll wait for some credible sources first.
But lets say it did take 6 years to make this, after basically using the 75% of the same assets as BOTW, a game that was ALREADY there... and BOTW would have taken under 5 years if you count from Skyward Sword to BOTW... yet adding 25% of new content somehow took 6 years...
Lets say thats correct, which it isn't, but lets say it is, Nintendo should have an interesting 5 or 6 years to come 🤣.
Like many many people here have mentioned, TOTK just felt like BOTW DLC to me, not to say i didn't enjoy it, but it really didn't give me a "new game" feel at all and there's no way that price tag is justified. There's also no way they were working on this for 6 years, in fact Nintendo hasn't mentioned development times for a lot of their games, so we just kinda pulled 6 years out of nowhere.
I doubt Nintendo where even working on this for 3 years, they could make all this in 18 months maximum. Most the game is essentially BOTW.
I'm glad that people enjoyed this but i would bet $100 that at least half of those sales are now regret buys, myself included
@FawfulsFury chance of TOTK winning overall is very slim, see the issue is that no matter how much some people might kick and scream that TOTK is a brand new game and it has tons of stuff that BOTW doesn't, it still shares about 75% of the same assets as BOTW.
Same art style Same items Same map Same NPCs
The issue here is that this isn't a fringe opinion shared by very few people. There are a LOT of people who were disappointed by TOTK, myself included, i put over 250 hours into BOTW too.
Trust me if i could go back, id have no purchased the game at all. I'm not the only one who thinks like this, TOTK will definitely not win overall this year.
I'm not surprised at this, the unfortunate thing is that the removal of Twitch just solidifies the Switch as a kids gaming device. It was already shakey with how limited the features were, but to remove it completely just furthers that notion.
The vast majority of Twitch streamers and viewers are aged between 14-27, the exact demographic that Nintendo wants to capture if they want to shake off their 'only for kids' reputation. A good way to do this would be to allow that demographic to use their Switches for Twitch.
Unfortunately Nintendo, being a Japanese company with traditional Japanese values are absolutely tone death to the wider market outside of Japan. In fact Nintendo are even becoming more and more detached from their own market too, there was a point in history where big name Japanese Developers like FromSoftware Games, would have never imagined not releasing content on a Nintendo device.
I think if theres one thing that finally got my to ditch my support for Nintendo hardware, it would be this.
If Nintendo went digital only, I'd throw my lot in with Steam Deck and wave goodbye to Nintendo. I'd also seal film all my physical Nintendo games because they'd be worth a small fortune before long.
@Cia i said i got bored after 10-15, i played about 40 hours.
People trying to claim this isn't over priced DLC sold as a full game to fleece Nintendo gamers because Nintendo have been fleecing Nintendo gamers for the past 7 years, are taking strong doses of copium.
@echoplex actually no, a lot felt like you did, in my opinion if you've already played BOTW, then you've already experienced roughly 70% of what TOTK offers.
I got bored after 10-15 hours, literally felt like BOTW DLC, it did NOT help that i went back to BOTW for a bit in preparation for Tears, that was a HUGE mistake because it really highlighted how little they actually added to the game.
I have no idea how this game took 6 years to make when it's around 70% reused assets.
@Matl Xenoblade isn't bad but it's not a contender for "greatest game". It's definitely down to opinion, but considering the entire Xenoblade franchise has sold less copies than Monster Hunter Rise, I'm going to say that your opinion is in very low minority.
Also i have rarely seen an opinion get so collectively destroyed by all sides to this degree, this article succeeded in showing us that when it comes to truly atrocious opinions that well and truly belong in the bin, we can all come together to say "nahhh".
Unfortunately it does look very much as if Aspyr announced the DLC with the intention of selling more copies of the base game and not actually making the DLC.
It doesn't look as if they intended to make the DLC at all and always just intended to give a free game to anyone who owns the original.
I'm not too bothered but i can see where the deception here could be.
I've always found that games that take too long to release, NEVER meet expectations. In fact there is normally a "behind the scenes" reason why the game was delayed for so long and normally thats never a good thing.
My guess is, they had to scrap and start again so often that i doubt the team are even aware what their original vision was.
@Fizza in fact, my brother actually works in marketing for a small team of PC game developers, they recently started looking at moving into console spaces, i asked him if they plan to make games for the Switch and he just laughed, said that making games for the Switch is a waste of time without a huge publishing studio behind you to market and publish the game.
We spoke about the litany of limitations that hinder 3rd party development on Nintendo hardware, everything from lack of cohesive online infrastructure to their very archaic and quite frankly, horrible online store (eShop), over priced game cartridges that mean a gimped physical release of the game, hence why most just shove broken ports on the eShop and call it a day.
Everything Nintendo does, put off 3rd party games from supporting their hardware and speaking to Nintendo about any of this directly is actually a running joke in the industry.
@Fizza Unfortunately i have my doubts, i think Capcom will support Nintendo consoles, but unfortunately, the days of exclusive MH support might be over, our best selling 3rd party game is MH Rise by a wide margin, its number 1 out of all the 3rd party games, yet on a list of top 20, it isn't even there.
They gave us MH Rise exclusively, which i believed would indicate two separate teams working on two separate types of projects, but that didn't pan out, i guess the game didn't sell the numbers they wanted to warrant continued exclusivity. I dunno what they expected it to sell though, i believe it sold close to 9m on the Switch before it got ported over to other consoles. It's the best selling 3rd party game on the Switch.
I think going forward any support we do get will likely be in the same way that other 3rd party developers support Nintendo, normally as an afterthought with a skeleton squad working on porting over the developers latest game to Nintendo's latest hardware, about 8 months to 1 year after the game has been available on either Xmox or PS.
Unfortunately i think this is probably the fate of Nintendo hardware going forward. What developers have been saying is actually true, no matter how much we try to argue otherwise, nobody buys Nintendo hardware for 3rd party games, so 3rd parties dont go out of their way to make games for Nintendo hardware, Capcom and a few other companies were the exception to that, but unfortunately it looks as the Capcom has joined the majority now too - Still better than not getting games at all but i don't see us getting exclusive games from 3rd parties anymore.
Nintendo gamers need to buy 3rd party games and they just dont, you actually see it here in this very website, whenever i see an article about Nintendo NOT getting a game that would easily work on the Switch, i see the comments section filled with anger and annoyance at the fact that Nintendo is being left out.
Then when games DO come on the Switch, it gets less than 15% votes on the "will buy" section, yet Nintendo exclusive games are sitting on 50%....
Developers see this website and this website and its comments sections are HORRIBLE for the future of 3rd party games on the Switch.
This is just an excuse for Microsoft to continue putting their games on the Switch, because by saying "they are not a home console", they can swe them as partners and not competitors.
Unfortunately this is just a ploy, Microsoft wants to buy Nintendo and Unfortunately, unless the Japanese government steps in to put laws in place to stop hostile takeovers, it's very likely to happen.
If Microsoft were a country, it's market cap as a business is around 2 Trillion. So its GDP would literally be higher than Canada. This is a business we're talking about.
The reality is, Microsoft could buy Sony, Nintendo and ALLL the game studios that make games for them too, Microsoft could literally swallow the entire industry whole with hostile takeovers. This isn't likely to happen as it would destroy their reputation and kill gaming worse than what happened in the 80s. But the fact they COULD do this, should actually scare us all.
@roy130390 people not wanting to spend their money on a half assed game and give the developers a free pass is a perfectly acceptable stance to take, in fact the problem with the industry is that people like you will reward mediocrity by purchasing the items to be begin with, therefore giving the developers a reason not to try. Why should they when you and others like you will just biy the game and hope and pray for an update 🤣.
If the next Pokemon game sells less than 2 million copies, the game after would be the best pokemon game we'll ever get, but nope, people are definitely gonna kiss the boot and buy whatever crap this company farts out.
Dragons Dogma 2 is still missing and maybe i missed it when i was scrolling through but it looks as though Witcher 3 is missing too?
Witcher 3 is the literal definition of a RPG game, one of the main aspects of Role playing games is having different choices to make as a player. No other game on this list has as many choices in game that has an impact on your playthrough.
@Qwiff yeah, to be fair, i haven't totally given up, i love Zelda in general and i really like open world games so by every metric, i should enjoy this, but i think i need to take it bit by bit, 20 hours here 10 hours there, I'll probably finish it eventually but as you say, it just feels too familiar 😅. Also dislike the building mechanics but that can be most ignored.
I've been trying so hard to enjoy Tears Of The Kingdom because i loved BOTW, one of my favourite games ever, but Tears isn't doing it for me.
My biggest issues are the janky building, the mostly reused assets, like same items, same enemies, same maps, same NPCs, why are the puzzles even easier than before? what exactly took 6 whole years to develop? All of the changes could have been added in a mod.
Sorry for the rant, im just so annoyed, i got the game this past week, I've put 20 hours into this and i tried to convince myself i like it, i just don't and i can't put anymore, i put 220 in BOTW, i was very much looking forward to spending my weekend playing this but alas, I'm giving up on it.
So to answer the question, i dunno what to play now. 😞
Everytime Nintendo are about to release a new console, everyone overshoots how powerful the machine will be.
At best Nintendo are gonna release 2022 graphics chips and hardware, but my expectation is that the new hardware Nintendo are working with is based on 2021 technology and when the hardware drops in 2024, it'll drop with a bunch of Nintendo games that had been in development for around 3 years by that point.
So the hardware specs we see in Nintendos next console will be 2021 specs. At best 2022 but i suspect 2021.
@Haruki_NLI actually it isn't even down to the hardware companies to give you accurate software sales for many of their games. So the issue is even worse than many realise.
Many developers don't release figures monthly, some MIGHT release them yearly but take the recent announcement by CDPR that Witcher III has sold over 50 million units, the last announcement we got put them at 30 million and that was around 2019, so in 4 years we got one update. Same with Skyrim and Bethesda.
Capcom are the same, take Monster Hunt Rise for example, last update we got put the Switch version around 8m sold and that wasn't even the first full years sales figures and they haven't released any figures since, but it's a Monster Hunter game so i wouldn't be surprised if it has over 13m sales on the Switch, but until Capcom says something, we'll never know.
Any chance of getting the N64 wrestling games? WWF No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000 i mewn hell, i would even take WCW Revenge.
If we can get any of these games, I'll be so happy.
On a side note though, i must say, in terms of value for money, the Switch online really isn't too bad now, the sheer amount of games you have access too for £35 a year is quite mind boggling.
To be fair if you're really into Souls like games, i doubt The Switch is your only console and you'll likely just play Dark Souls on other consoles.
I've played DS1, DS3 and Elden Ring, i find the formula to be actually kinda boring now, FromSoftware the people behind the games, they found this gameplay formula in 2009 for a game called Demon Souls, they then used that same gameplay formula with minor tweaks and slapped a new skin on and literally released 1 game every 2.5 years using the same formula and they somehow became industry darlings for it.
Demon Souls - 2009 Dark Souls - 2011 Dark Souls 2 - 2014 Bloodborne - 2015 Dark Souls 3 - 2016 Sekiro - 2019 Elden Ring - 2022
7 games in 13 years and i haven't even included Demon Souls Remastered. If EA or Activision or Bethesda or literally ANY other developers done the same thing, which many of them do, they'd have been bashed and dragged through the mud for it and they do get bashed and dragged through the mud for it, Assasins Creed literally did EXACTLY this and got totally ripped apart for it.
The fact that Fromsoftware did the same thing and became industry darlings shows how bias gamers can be, it's really bad.
@VR32X they do, just not on the Switch, Unfortunately. Particularly Doom Eternal, that game was dirst announced for a March 2020 release on all systems, then couple of weeks before the game dropped, they removed the Switch release to an unknown date and took away all mention of a physical copy.
Then in December 2020 game finally dropped as a digital only game requiring like 30-40 gigs of storage to play.
I'm actually genuinely surprised nobody has tried to purchase Konami yet, they have so many great IPs that are wasted because their house is in shambles.
@GrailUK oh wow i didn't notice that, how did they miss Dragons Dogma? In my opinion its a top 5 open world adventure game available on the Switch. Behind Skyrim, Witcher 3 and both Zelda games.
For all the Nintendo's short comings, the Switch really is that one system that broke the mould. I never really realised this but the Switch is actually the only system where you can play the best 3 games of the previous decade (from 2010 to end of 2019).
These are, in order:
Skyrim 2011
Witcher 3 2015
Breath of the Wild 2017.
Most publications have these 3 games as the best 3 games of the decade between those years. Most put Witcher 3 first but I've seen some put BOTW and Skyrim ahead with the other two just behind and vice versa.
No other device actually allows you to do that. Also these 3 games are actually the main reason why so many games are open world too.
Edit: GTA V is the best selling game ever but not the best, most lists put it at 5th or 6th for the last decade and i agree, the single player is severely lacking.
@calbeau it's a free roam game, go out and hunt and skin animals, find NPCs for random encounters and i believe to ride from one corner of the map to the other would take you a good while.
It's a big game, easily sink over 100 hours and still not do everything or see everything. think GTA V wild west but It has more to do in it than the base game of GTA V.
@Scapetti I mean to be fair, if CDPR can charge £29.99 for Witcher 3 when it came out on the Switch in 2019, for the Physical version, being only 4 years old and a current gen (at the time) game.
I genuinely do not see why Rockstar can justify charging £40 for a digital version of a 13 year old game.
Having said that, RDR is one of my favourite games and i have always wanted to play it on the go, so I'd be willing to fork out £35 for a physical version. Maybe even £40. But i can see why many won't.
@ToDaisy You think its rude for them to mention the game with the Switch but not rude for the litany of dense Nintendo fans who accused them of copying BOTW?
I can see many of them here in the comments section.
We probably won't be getting this game because lets face it, read these comments, these are shills here. Plain and simple. The game would have flopped on the Switch because anything not made by Nintendo isn't good to them.
I'm glad Nintendo isn't getting this game, the fans do not deserve it at all.
To be fair I'm surprised they are not releasing their next gen console at the end of this year, just from a business standpoint, if you go by how long Nintendo normally wait between generations in previous years, they would have released a new console by now or at latest, by the end of this year.
Mobile phone games like Genshin Impact can run on an old phone from 2019 but isn't capable of running on the Nintendo Switch. If you think Genshin Impact is a small game, you couldn't be more wrong, it's probably the biggest game in Asia in the last decade. For Nintendo's main console to not be able to run the biggest game for the last decade in their own home territory, is one of the most embarrassing situations Nintendo has had to deal with when it comes to the underpowered Switch.
@Truegamer79 i get it, you're not ready to see a new console, you still have tons of games to play, you are satisfied with the machine and you don't want to fork out the money for a new console.
Problem with this entire premise, its all how YOU feel, the rest of us have been ready, the Switch can't even run mobile phone games like Genshin Impact, we are way overdue an upgrade, no matter how YOU feel about that.

Re: Nintendo Reportedly Showed 'Switch 2' Demos To Developers At Gamescom
Everytime Nintendo are about to release a new console, everyone overshoots how powerful the machine will be.
At best Nintendo are gonna release 2022 graphics chips and hardware, but my expectation is that the new hardware Nintendo are working with is based on 2021 technology and when the hardware drops in 2024, it'll drop with a bunch of Nintendo games that had been in development for around 3 years by that point.
So the hardware specs we see in Nintendos next console will be 2021 specs. At best 2022 but i suspect 2021.
Re: TOTK Director Is Extremely Vague On Game's Placement In Zelda Timeline
@EaglyBird fairly certain that Skyward Sword is the beginning of the time-line. We even see Ganon before he becomes evil.
Re: UK Charts: Nintendo Remains Strong As Starfield Warps Into View
Re: Sega & Atlus Airing Special Broadcast At The Tokyo Game Show Next Month
@AtlanteanMan Shin Megami Tensei says hello 👋.
Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online N64 Library With Another Game Next Week
Any chance of getting the N64 wrestling games? WWF No Mercy, Wrestlemania 2000 i mewn hell, i would even take WCW Revenge.
If we can get any of these games, I'll be so happy.
On a side note though, i must say, in terms of value for money, the Switch online really isn't too bad now, the sheer amount of games you have access too for £35 a year is quite mind boggling.
Re: Best Nintendo Switch Soulslikes - Games To Play If You Like Dark Souls
To be fair if you're really into Souls like games, i doubt The Switch is your only console and you'll likely just play Dark Souls on other consoles.
I've played DS1, DS3 and Elden Ring, i find the formula to be actually kinda boring now, FromSoftware the people behind the games, they found this gameplay formula in 2009 for a game called Demon Souls, they then used that same gameplay formula with minor tweaks and slapped a new skin on and literally released 1 game every 2.5 years using the same formula and they somehow became industry darlings for it.
Demon Souls - 2009
Dark Souls - 2011
Dark Souls 2 - 2014
Bloodborne - 2015
Dark Souls 3 - 2016
Sekiro - 2019
Elden Ring - 2022
7 games in 13 years and i haven't even included Demon Souls Remastered. If EA or Activision or Bethesda or literally ANY other developers done the same thing, which many of them do, they'd have been bashed and dragged through the mud for it and they do get bashed and dragged through the mud for it, Assasins Creed literally did EXACTLY this and got totally ripped apart for it.
The fact that Fromsoftware did the same thing and became industry darlings shows how bias gamers can be, it's really bad.
Re: Turok 3: Shadow Of Oblivion Remaster Announced For Switch
@VR32X they do, just not on the Switch, Unfortunately. Particularly Doom Eternal, that game was dirst announced for a March 2020 release on all systems, then couple of weeks before the game dropped, they removed the Switch release to an unknown date and took away all mention of a physical copy.
Then in December 2020 game finally dropped as a digital only game requiring like 30-40 gigs of storage to play.
Most people skipped it after that.
Re: Metal Gear Solid 2 And 3 Will Have Lower Frame Rates On Switch, Konami Confirms
Low effort over priced games = Konami since 2018.
I'm actually genuinely surprised nobody has tried to purchase Konami yet, they have so many great IPs that are wasted because their house is in shambles.
Re: Best Switch Ports - The Most Impressive Ports On Nintendo Switch
@GrailUK oh wow i didn't notice that, how did they miss Dragons Dogma? In my opinion its a top 5 open world adventure game available on the Switch. Behind Skyrim, Witcher 3 and both Zelda games.
Re: Best Switch Ports - The Most Impressive Ports On Nintendo Switch
Re: Review: Red Dead Redemption - A Fine But No-Frills Switch Port, For A Fistful Of Dollars
@calbeau if you like those open world type games with tons of quests and freedom to do whatever you like, check out these games too:
Witcher 3
Skyrim
Dragons Dogma
Re: Review: Red Dead Redemption - A Fine But No-Frills Switch Port, For A Fistful Of Dollars
Re: Review: Red Dead Redemption - A Fine But No-Frills Switch Port, For A Fistful Of Dollars
Re: Genshin Impact Zelda "Clone" Accusations Had Dev Team In Tears
@riki_sidekicks thats because it was literally NOT A CLONE. It was never intended as a clone. Thats just what many people here ran with.
Re: Genshin Impact Zelda "Clone" Accusations Had Dev Team In Tears
@ToDaisy You think its rude for them to mention the game with the Switch but not rude for the litany of dense Nintendo fans who accused them of copying BOTW?
I can see many of them here in the comments section.
We probably won't be getting this game because lets face it, read these comments, these are shills here. Plain and simple. The game would have flopped on the Switch because anything not made by Nintendo isn't good to them.
I'm glad Nintendo isn't getting this game, the fans do not deserve it at all.
Re: Poll: Do You Think Switch Can Catch PS2's Total Sales Before 'Switch 2' Arrives?
If the have a price cut, they might, if not i don't see it happening anytime soon.
Re: The Super Mario Bros. Movie Pulled In Over 168 Million Viewers At The Box Office, Says Nintendo
Was a solid film, definitely the best animated film this year. I would love to see a Zelda one personally. Metroid would be good too.
Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Sells More Than 18 Million Copies In Two Months
Is this the fastest selling game in history? What are the figures for that?
Re: Nintendo Switch Has Now Sold Over 129 Million Units
Very impressive, I think they could possibly dethrone the DS, it all depends on how long they support the system after the next system drops.
Re: Rumour: Nintendo Is Targeting A 2024 Release For The Switch Successor
Re: Poll: Pikmin 4 Is Out On Switch This Week, Will You Be Getting It?
Not my type of game to be honest and i have far too many games i need to play. It's a no from me but i hope everyone enjoys it. 😊
Re: PSA: For Goodness Sake, Don't Fall For This Nintendo Switch 2 'Leak'
@Truegamer79 i get it, you're not ready to see a new console, you still have tons of games to play, you are satisfied with the machine and you don't want to fork out the money for a new console.
Problem with this entire premise, its all how YOU feel, the rest of us have been ready, the Switch can't even run mobile phone games like Genshin Impact, we are way overdue an upgrade, no matter how YOU feel about that.
