Re: Slime-San’s Big New Expansion Is Now Live On Switch

Oat

@Alikan same here. I wanted to like it but it didn't connect with me. I managed to try celeste on pc and liked it so much more than slime san that I immediately bought it on switch. Celeste no joke is one of the tightest and best controlling platformers I've ever played

Re: Review: 20XX (Switch eShop)

Oat

@SmaggTheSmug You're one of the first people I've heard bring up how Risk of Rain does its level generation. I too prefer how Ror does levels. Randomly selecting handcrafted levels instead of using procedural generation to spit out crap level is much more preferable.

Re: Review: 20XX (Switch eShop)

Oat

@DavidJagneaux I had a question about the game. The game is $15 on steam and $18 on Switch. I wanted to know if the Switch version had any of the dlc characters from the pc version to justify the $3 difference in price because otherwise it seems as though Switch users are paying more for the same game

Edit: Nevermind. I check the devs AMA that they had today and it seems as though the game is priced at $18 to make the price comparable to how much you'd pay if you bought the base game + all dlc characters on pc. (In addition due to the nature of Steam sales the price will be lower overall. Even at the time of writing this the game is on sale for $9.89 with the game + all dlc totaling $14.85) In return the console versions will be getting all dlc characters for free whereas on pc they will be separate purchases.

Re: Nintendo Wants To Release 20-30 Indie Games Every Week On Switch

Oat

I really dont like this at all. The release rate of games on the Switch is already around 11-16 per week as it is. Doubling that amount means that the Switch eshop gets filled with more crap than what's already on the service. For comparison it took the 3ds more than 7 years to get to more than 1100 titles on the eshop yet the switch is rapidly closing in on that number in just under 2 years. That is far too much far too quickly.

This flood of games more or less guarantees than any new release is almost instantly pushed off the new release section which is exactly what the new switch eshop update was designed to address somewhat. Very stupid decision by Nintendo. I dont want steam or app store 2.0

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend?

I'll be trying to go through a lot of the demos that are on my switch so that means getting through the octopath demos, dq builder demo, as well as the shining resonance demo

Once I'm done with those I'll finally start up Hollow Knight

Re: Zero Escape Director Unveils AI: The Somnium Files, A Detective Adventure Coming To Switch

Oat

Definitely going to pick this up. Looks very promising, especially since it's from the director of the Zero Escape series plus it also has Kozaki working on char. designs. (I find Kozaki's work with No More Heroes to be far better than his work with Fire Emblem mainly because I feel as though the FE designs weren't challenging him artistically.)

Lastly punchline is a trash anime. Don't bother watching that show. It's 8 episodes of crap to get to a decent 4 episode finale. 4/10 show.

Re: Review: Pocket Rumble (Switch eShop)

Oat

This game is fin is a bit barebones. There really should be an easier way to back out to the menu in certain modes. At times I find myself mashing through control prompt just to return to the menu. Also in training mode there's seeming no way to unassign buttons to be a blank input once you've set it which is very annoying. ( I accidentally set the dummy record option to the same button as my light and the game wouldnt let me return it to a blank input. Having a mode like SF 30th anniversary where you can just restore defaults and set all buttons would be nice).

Overall solid game with some minor annoyances and lacking some of the QoL improvements found in other fighting games. Also sweep to sweep seems unusually fast.

@SuperWeird I feel the same way as you. The arcade mode really needs a difficulty selection. Like I genuinely got stuck on the first fight for a good 30 min last night. I also find hitting diagonals to be inconsistent at times with the game so I actually kind of wish this game had traditional inputs instead of d.forward or d.back

Re: Saucy Brawler Skullgirls 2nd Encore Is Coming To Nintendo Switch

Oat

Cannot wait for this game to hit Switch! Hoping for a physical release at some point. (nothing would make me happier. Especially since there was a physical release back on the vita but the vita is more or less a dead console so I'd love to see a new physical release)

@gcunit The price will most likely be $24.99 (or the equivalent in one's local currency) as that's the price for the ps4 version.

@Swoltacular The game plays most similarly to the Marvel vs Capcom series. (tag team action, hyper combos, and all that jazz)

@Haywired I feel you with how complicated fighting games can get. It's one aspect I hate about the genre despite how much I love fighting games. They feel inaccessible just for the sake of being so. Also pretzel motions are the most dumbfounding and unnecessary motion I have ever seen in a fighting game. F&*k pretzel motions.

"In cases where there is a disconnection during a match, ratings will
go up or down based on the score in that match at that time.

When there is great discrepancy between players in ability, a player’s rating may not go up even if they win."

These two features should be near universal when it comes to online games, especially the former. You should lose point if you disconnect when you're losing. Hopefully this will deter rage quitters somewhat.

Re: Review: MUSYNX (Switch)

Oat

I completely agree with this review especially on the parts regarding a lack of a sorting function (I wish I could favorite songs) as well as the sound enhancement feature. (It's a neat idea but it often results in songs sounding worse unless you play perfectly)

Also one last thing of note that wasn't mentioned in the review are load times. I'm playing on a physical release on the Na version and load times for backing out of a song and returning to the main menu average around 20s which is pretty annoying.

Also you can't scroll with the analog stick or continuously scroll for that matter so be prepared to mash the dpad to get to your favorite songs

Also i wish there was a song listen feature where you could just listen to all the tracks without having to play them

Lastly some songs seem a tad bit harder than need be due to the timing of the notes shifting between the different parts of the song (for example the notes might start off synced to the vocals and then abruptly switch to being synced with the main chords of the song and then switch to the beat and then to the baseline)

Overall it's a fantastic rhythm game that lacks a lot of the neat bells and whistles that other games such as dj max and super beat xonic have. It more than makes up for it with a huge and varied tracklist and the promise of free dlc to come. 8/10

Re: Review: Lumines Remastered (Switch eShop)

Oat

@SwitchVogel I love lumines (far better than tetris imo). I bought the ps2 port on a whim around a decade ago at a gamestop. I popped it in an immediately got hooked for hours. I bought the original psp version to play on the go and now it's finally on the switch. Needless to say I already had it prepurchased so I'm more than excited to jump back into my favorite puzzle game of all time

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend?

Oat

I keep meaning to play Splatoon 2 so hopefully I'll get around to it this weekend. I also hope to finish the Octopath Traveler Demos as well.

I've been playing Musynx as well. Very good rhythm game thought it is decidedly no frills when it comes to its presentation. It boots up the the logo of the game and after 30 sec or so it auto plops you to the main menu with a song selector and that's it. Load times are also a tad long when choosing to and returning from playing a song. Otherwise fantastic game.

Re: 2D Fighter Pocket Rumble Is Finally Launching On Switch Next Month

Oat

I'm echoing what others have said. I'm interested in picking it up but I feel like its chance to shine has passed. We now have multiple neo geo fighting games, some of the best in the fighting game genre at that. We also have BB Cross Tag Battle, SF 30th anniversary, and soon we'll have Dragon Ball Fighter Z as well as SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. I hope the devs are able to make some money off of this but man I really feel like they missed their chance to shine.

Re: Nintendo Download: 21st June (North America)

Oat

I absolutely cannot wait for Lumines Remastered. It's one of my favorite falling block puzzle games of all time. Also it was strange for Musynx to release 2 days earlier if you bought it physically since I've had the game since Tuesday.

Re: Review: Mario Tennis Aces (Switch)

Oat

@Knuckles-Fajita Kinda have to agree with you. This review basically could be summed up as "Mario Tennis Ultra Smash but actually good this time" or "Here's 12 or so paragraphs on why ultra smash was bad and how this is the game ultra smash should have been". The less we talk about the dumpster fire that was ultra smash, the better. ( I still find it unbelievable that Nintendo had the guts to release such a stripped down game back in 2015 for $50 no less)

Re: Rocket League Is Getting A Fortnite-Inspired 'Rocket Pass'

Oat

@Hikingguy I completely agree. That's one of the things that I hate about both the wii u and the Switch. I think for it's price Nintendo offered far too little storage on the system, especially since nowadays they seem keen on promoting digital purchases while simultaneously having a system that is ill suited to having large digital libraries due to a lack of storage and barley any deep discounts on their eshop

Re: Nintendo Says Switch Success Is Due To Clear Marketing, As Opposed To Wii U's Failure

Oat

Like others have pointed out, it's more than just marketing that went wrong with the wii u. It's the fact that the wii u was straight up a bad product to begin with. Even if you bought one it was too expensive, lacked third party support, had multiple month long droughts between games with the last 2 years of the wii u having some of the worst games release on that system (like amiibo festival and ultra smash).

In addition the gamepad had a cheap plastic quality to it with a poor battery life. You could never shut off the gamepad. The system itself was slow even after updates. The eshop was cumbersome to use in terms of updates and downloadable content. The system had limited internal storage. The list goes on.

I'm glad that the wii u failed and Nintendo learned those painful lessons so that they hopefully never eff up as bad again

Re: Grab Yourself A Bargain In The Big Nintendo E3 2018 Sale

Oat

@HobbitGamer I would say Zero Mission has more going on. Like Samus Returns is very linear, and linearity is not necessarily a bad thing but in this case it decreases the role of backtracking as you're more often than not moving on to the next area once you're done with the previous one with very little reason to return to past areas. There are a few moments in the game where it essentially forces you to go back to get a mandatory upgrade but past that the games guides you from area 1, to 2, and so on.

It's ironic for me because I actually liked the linearity of fusion but here in samus returns it feels a bit disappointing. Once again far from a bad game. It's just decent. Very little truly wowed or surprised me in Samus Returns

Re: Grab Yourself A Bargain In The Big Nintendo E3 2018 Sale

Oat

@HobbitGamer In my opinion it's pretty alright. I don't think it will wow you if you're a hardcore metroid fan (heck it didn't particularly wow me and I'm an ultra casual metroid fan). About a 6/10-7/10 in my book. Competent but not much else. Combat feels good but enemy designs, encounters, and bosses get repetitive. Music is mostly recycled from other metroid games. Also not much use for backtracking outside of powerups. Also the final boss fight of the game felt unnecessary

Re: Dedicated Handheld Systems Are Still A Key Business Driver For Nintendo

Oat

@Alikan You made me laugh more than I should have with this comment. Let me see if I can do one.

Truly we were unwashed masses having being exposed to the horror and shame of the 3ds. True gaming was but a distant hope until we were bathed in the light that is the Nintendo Switch. Truly our eyes were opened on March 3rd 2017. No longer will our eyes melt and our hands be mangled after we move on from that literally unplayable system that is known as the 3ds.

<ultra sarcasm>

Re: Review: Soccer Slammers (Switch eShop)

Oat

Honestly I had a feeling this one would be mediocre. I feel like jools has put out too many games in too short of a time period and it's reflecting in the quality of his releases. Since 2012 he's released:
Mutant Mudds
Mutant Mudds Super Challenge
Bomb Monkey
Xeodrifter
Totes the Goat
Chicken Wiggle
And now Soccer Slammers

I genuinely feel like he could put out a quality game (in my opinion. I'm not really too big of a fan of his games) if he focused on quality instead of quantity. I feel like there's a reason why studios such as image and form have their games held in such high regard (3 polished as hell games in 5 years) as well as being top sellers on the switch eshop while atooi is struggling
