Re: Game Freak Is Trying To Create Something "More Exciting Than Pokémon"

Oat

I truly am so happy to hear this. Personally speaking I've thought that for the last 7 years or so that the original titles gamefreak have been putting out have been far more interesting that their pokemon titles. Games like Harmoknight, Pocket Card Jockey, as well as Tembo the Badass Elephant and Giga Wrecker are far more unique and creative than gens 6&7 of pokemon.

Cannot wait for Town!

Cuphead and Bastion for me. Just finished Inkwell Isle II so I have Inkwell Isle III and the final world left.

@JoeDiddley I'm sure you're going to love Chrono Trigger. I played it for the first time back in 2017 when my 3ds accidentally got busted up at work. I played it on my DSi and was kicking myself for not having played it sooner. Phenomenal music. Simple and fun atb rpg combat. Likable characters and fantastic pacing.

Playing through Cuphead. Great game for the most part. Ironically being a run and gun game, the run and gun levels are the worst part for me. A lot of the times it's stuff coming off screen that hits me due to being obscured by foreground elements. Going to try and finish Cuphead this weekend and then get back to Bastion. I'll try to get back to Undertale as my gamer ADD kicked in and I put it on hold to play Cuphead and Bastion.

Re: Review: Metagal - A Mega Man Clone That Comes With A Mega Problem

I'm echoing other comments left here. It's personally around a 4-5/10 for me. I also unfortunately ran into a bug in which I died to the boss in the fire stage and got sent outside the boss door. Tried entering the boss again and the boss door wouldn't open. It's pretty mediocre but I don't think it's 3/10 bad.

Re: Soapbox: I Don't 'Get' Smash Bros. And I Just Don't Know Why

Oat

@dartmonkey Hey Man, no need to feel bad about not liking Smash. Not everyone likes the same things. I have a similar opinion as you when it comes to Super Meat Boy. Every raves about it as one of the greatest platformers of all time but I don't particularly like that game. I much prefer playing Celeste over Super Meat Boy.

Re: Gunman Clive Creator Admits Cuphead Has Him "Excited And Terrified" About His Next Game's Launch

Oat

I'm definitely grabbing Mechstermination force as well as Cuphead!
I really like Horberg Productions' games and felt like they were vastly underrated on the 3ds. (I mean Jools games got near constant coverage on this site but it felt like Gunman Clive went under the radar).

Definitely will have my support day 1. I completely understand why Bertil is a bit worried but at the very least I can do my part. Believe in yourself Bertil!

@Medic_alert I very much agree with you on your opinion of Metroid Samus Returns. I beat it and felt like it was just ok. I really feel like people were so starved for metroid that it got such high ratings but overall it felt like a 6/10 to 7/10 for me. I feel like there are other and better metroidvania games out there for people to be looking at and it's hard to recommend Samus Returns when stuff like Hollow Knight exists.

I'll be playing undertale and possible some assault android cactus. Played a bit of the steam demo of devil engine. Pretty good shmup but boy is it ridiculously hard. Probably will pick it up on sale later as I'm not exactly starved for shmups on the switch or on steam.

Re: Nintendo Planning Ways To "Boost The Appeal" Of Switch Online Service On A Yearly Basis

Oat

@chardir agreed. I myself opted for the 1yr plan but in hindsight I'm not sure that was the best decision. Going forward I'll probably opt for the 1 month plan unless nintendo gives me a reason to care about playing most of their online games. I mean you look at stuff like NSMBU Deluxe, Kirby Star Allies, and Super Mario Party and all of those games have no online modes (with SMP having limited online functionality). Most of the games nintendo has released in 2018 have had next to no online modes so it isn't too much of a surprise that NSO isn't being widely adopted.

Re: Review: Tangledeep - A Challenging Roguelike That's Best Appreciated By Grizzled Genre Veterans

Oat

@Yorumi I find myself agreeing with you. Most games nowadays are catered towards an easier play experience that almost anyone can pick up. It can be rather frustrating to see a game get docked point for being difficult and/or complex. I do understand that games can go too far at times but i feel like there should be room in the games industry for certain games to be designed to be difficult without having to worry about whether or not inexperienced players can understand all the systems.

Re: Review: YIIK: A Postmodern RPG - EarthBound For A New Generation

Oat

Might pick this up at a slight discount. I saw a vid of the first hour of play. I'm not a fan of the self narration that Alex does. It takes me right out of the experience as it feels like the game is dictating to me how I should feel and react to it rather than letting me sus that out for myself. It's also rather annoying. Voice acting so far is a bit hit or miss.

Lastly from what I've seen, the Switch version has some very bad load times for battles. Battles take about 8~10 seconds to load into every time. I wish this had been mentioned in the review

Re: Talking Point: Come In Nintendo 3DS, Your Time Is Up

Oat

This might be surprising since I've been pretty vocal about keeping the 3ds around in spite of nay sayers on this site. I actually think the 3ds should be let out to pasture. I'll still continue to play my 3ds and the embarrassing number of games I have in my 3ds backlog but even I think it's time now. There isn't much but ports now, sales of software and hardware are down and even in my own personal list I only have about 13 more titles left to collect for the 3ds before I have just about every game I'd want on the platform.

Thanks for 8 years of play 3ds!

Re: Nintendo Download: 3rd January (North America)

Oat

@Dazza Slight typo in the description of Kof 2002. " In this tame, the “Striker System” is replaced by creating teams for the comeback of the “3-on-3 Battle Mode”. " should be game instead of tame.

Keep up the great work on the site! Just wanted to leave a friendly tip

Re: Treat Yourself To A Bargain Or Two With The Nintendo New Year's Sale In North America

Oat

Hey can I get a genuine opinion on Flinthook on the switch. It looks solid but I'm hesitant to pull the purchase trigger because the studios other games have left me feeling mixed. I loved Ninja Senki but hated Curses n Chaos. I thought Mercenary Kings was a mediocre run and gun game that overcomplicated and ruined the run and gun formula.

I know it's a roguelike platformer and I heard it's alright. I just wanted some second opinions. I'm not trying to get burned again.

Re: Video: Get A Closer Look At The Contra And Metal Slug-Inspired Blazing Chrome

Oat

Day one buy for me!
This is what classic run 'n gun should be.
I was recently thinking about how much I dont like mercenary kings because they gunked up the formula for how classic run and gun games should work.

Adding in Monster Hunter style grinding for new parts and a gears of war style reload system makes the gameplay feel slow and clunky. These games are at their best with simple running and shooting.
