Re: Eiji Aonuma Wants Players To Decide How Breath Of The Wild Connects To Existing Zelda Timeline

Oat

I see this as a cheap cop out. Going forward I'm just going to stop caring about the timeline because Nintendo sure as hell doesn't care about it. It makes me a bit sad because I liked the idea of the timeline but seeing how Nintendo wont commit to it makes me sad and frustrated. Like why did they even bother making it in the first place if they were going to immediately back down from it

I got the book a few days ago. The history section is not nearly as interesting as they make it out to be. Most of it is just compiled information about the fall of hyrule that the game already tells you through cut scenes and background text while going into marginally more detail than what's explained in game. The interesting parts however are about fort hateno and fort akala but besides that I was kinda disappointed with that section. The rest of the book is great with very detailed break downs about character and art design. I like the section on Urbosa and the thought process behind her design.

Gonna try to play through inside. I bought both inside and limbo on sale and honestly didn't really enjoy limbo all that much from a gameplay standpoint (I ended up just watching a playthrough of the second half of the game online). The atmosphere and sound design was great but the dark visuals often made deaths feel cheap and the gameplay felt very limited. I have heard that people love inside a lot more, even from people who didn't like limbo all that much.

If I manage to finish Inside I'll finally get to playing undertale. I want to finish it now that deltarune is out.

Re: Here Are The Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games As Of September 2018

Oat

@gcunit I was about to mention something to that effect. It really is shocking to see that much of a drop in sales between those games. Like theres BOTW, MK8, Odyssey, and then basically everything else. The bigger shock for me is the sales disparity between Splatoon 2 and ARMS. Arms (while it has sold well) has sold nowhere close to Splatoon 2 despite being a new ip released around the same time. Even when compared to splatoon 1 sales it still seems disappointing.

I'm working my way though Captain Commando as part of the Capcom Beat em Up Bundle (it's still very hard for me to believe that people genuinely find that game to be overpriced when it's 7 stellar arcade classics but what ever). I'm also going to be going through limbo and inside as I recently picked them up on sale on the switch. ( i want to see what all the fuss is about)

Re: Zelda-Inspired Hazelnut Bastille Wants To Bring SNES Magic To Switch, Kickstarter Coming Soon

Oat

@AloftStudio hey I'm very appreciative of you going into the comments and clearing up any questions that people have. Not many indies do that. A lot of the times indies will post up a kickstarter project and ask for nlind faith to be put into the developer. I really do appreciate you clearing up questions such as potential price point, how far along you are in development, playtime length, and how your game is different. I don't mean to throw other indies under the bus but I love the pixel art of your game and tend to get a bit miffed when I see other indies with kinda crap pixel art charging premium prices. I'm not sure if I'll back on kickstarter but I'll definitely buy day one

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Has Stumbled With Switch Online, But It Can Learn From Its Mistakes

Oat

"Nintendo are used to developing in a vacuum, in fear that allowing public input will lead to product secrets being leaked. Ultimately this means that the product hits the shelves with very little customer input, and once the product is built, there is no going back."

This right here is Nintendo in a nutshell. Their refusal to actually listen to any sort of public feedback and quickly implement changes is what has been holding the company back. SMH

Re: Review: Chasm - A Procedurally-Generated Metroidvania That Pleases Rather Than Dazzles

Oat

@Donutman Agreed. That has definitely been me a few times. Now with so many indies launching at or around $20 it's getting harder to justify impulse buys because it adds up very quickly. Also from a dev's point of view it's probably better to price higher as you'll get more money from people who buy early and you can always put your game on sale which also doubles as free promotion by placing your game on the great deals tab. (With that said, pricing too high can be a detriment to your game. It seems like that may have been the case with Fox n Forests as that game initially launched at a $20 price point, which was too high in my opinion, and then later permanently slashed its price to $10)

Re: Review: Chasm - A Procedurally-Generated Metroidvania That Pleases Rather Than Dazzles

Oat

@Donutman I'm getting to that point as well with most switch releases. So many indies are coming out week after week that I'm just shoving stuff onto my wishlist and telling myself to buy it when it goes on sale. It's a real downside to Nintendo's firehose approach to Switch Eshop releases though admittedly they don't have complete control over when each game releases on their eshop

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Maddening Stance On Retro Gaming Is Driving Me To Piracy

Oat

Amen to this article!

Especially this bit right here: "Shutting down ROM-sharing sites but then failing to offer any viable means of playing those games outside of sourcing the original hardware and software – both of which might be extortionately expensive options these days – shows that Nintendo doesn't really comprehend the nature of this side of its business."

It seriously always boggles my mind when I read post from people on this site hell bent against emulation.

Re: Soapbox: Why Do We Want More Games When We've Already Got Too Many?

Oat

I'm pretty bad with this. I have waaaay too many games on my switch already despite having a 7 year 80+ game backlog of 3ds titles I should be getting through. It's hard to decide what to play and I think part of it is because we're spoiled with choice. There's so much new stuff constantly vying for our attention. Combined with the hedonic treadmill with new and exciting things quickly becoming the new normal, it's not very hard to see why gamers amass such massive backlogs

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (September 29th)

Oat

@SterlingEyes I'm the same. I keep bouncing back and forth between games. I usually end up going back to Kirby star allies and I don't even like that game all that much (it's just that the guest star game mode is a very engaging loop). I've been wanting to play a good action game with a good story and/or atmosphere so I think I'll finally start up hyper light drifter

Re: Alwa's Awakening - An Authentic Throwback To Gaming's 8-Bit Past In More Ways Than One

Oat

I felt like this was going to be a 6/10 or 7/10 from watching trailers and gameplay. It seems well made for what it is and is undoubtedly solid for those looking for a retro throwback but I feel as though I've had more than my fill of games trying to ape that NES feel.

The slow movement and unhelpful map design combined with some occasionally frustrating checkpoints (all design quirks that have long since been remedied since the NES days) make this sound like a game that came out in 1988 not 2018 and I feel like I have better things to spend my money on that stuff that feels like it's 30 years old.

Re: Tales Of Vesperia: Definitive Edition Anniversary Bundles Have Already Sold Out

Oat

@Flowerlark I completely agree with you on limited editions. I get frustrated because I love special editions but they are often times so hard to get due to how few copies that companies make, especially Nintendo.

I also hate when people retort "hurr durr it's a limited edition, what did you expect". I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to have more than 2-3 days to buy a version of a product that doesn't launch until January of next year

Re: The Capcom Beat ’Em Up Bundle Will Tickle Your Side-Scrolling Fighter Itch

Oat

YES YES 1000x YES!!!
I've already pre-purchased but this was one of the biggest highlights for me. I cannot wait to play these games!

I was literally thinking last night "Wouldn't it be cool if Capcom released an a bundle of their old arcade beat em ups" and lo and behold they did it.

@Frendo I wouldn't hold my breath for AVP. It looks dope but it is undoubtedly stuck in licensing hell. Capcom made the game, Fox owns the rights to Aliens and Predator and Sega has the rights to publish all Aliens related videogames. Good luck untangling that mess
