Re: Video: Check Out Blastoise In Action In The Latest Pokkén Tournament DX DLC

Oat

@Malcrash I mainly pointed out the price due to occasionally hearing people complain about the price of smash bros dlc fighters (which were more than reasonably priced in my opinion). I do feel like charging $7.49 for blastoise is a bit much even when compared to $30-$35 fighting game season passes because you usually get a lot more characters and the character prices usually average to about $5 not $7

Re: Review: Kirby Star Allies (Switch)

Oat

Truth be told this seems like a very fair review. Even though I'm a huge kirby fan and I'm ultra excited for the return of ability mixing, even I can see that this game doesn't do all that much that's new. That 30fps is pretty disappointing though.

@SwitchVogel Is there a true arena mode that gets unlocked after you beat the arena? That's what I'm really concerned about

Re: Feature: SNES-Style RPG Hazelnut Bastille Coming To Switch With Secret of Mana Composer In Tow

Oat

This definitely looks right up my alley. I especially appreciate the dedication and attention to detail when it comes to the 16 bit aesthetic. Far too many indie titles have very cheap and amateur looking pixel art. I've been longing for indie devs to polish their pixel art to the standards of the snes or the gba and I'm getting those vibes with this. Not to mention the fact that they got the secret of mana composer on board makes me very excited.

Re: Feature: A Kirby Retrospective: From Game Boy To Nintendo Switch

Oat

Good write up! Kirby is my favorite gaming series of all time and it makes me happy to see this series get some more recognition and attention. Nightmare in Dreamland is my personal favorite with robobot and super star ultra not too far behind. I'm going to drop some more fun facts too

Nightmare in Dreamland also a rendition of fountain of dreams when you fight king dedede most likely based of the melee rendition of the same song. The game also unfortunately lacks the secret hal room that was included in the original game

Dreamland 2,3, and Crystal shards form a narrative trilogy known as the dark matter trilogy. These 3 games were primarily directed by a man known as Shinichi Shimomura. After the release of nightmare in dreamland (the last game he was credited in) he seemingly left hal. It's rumoured that he passed away back in 03 but no one knows for sure.

Super star ultra is also notable for including kabula as a boss fight after he was unfortunately cut for the original release of kirby super star

In nightmare in dreamland / adventure the first letter of each level when combined and placed in reverse level order spell out roygbiv

Lastly in return to Dreamland as well as planet robobot the first letter of each level combine to spell out "crowned" and "program" respectively which are allusions to the final boss of each game.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I actually feel you on this one. A few days ago I believe I left a comment disagreeing with you on how it's not too bad that there's all of these wii u ports. I thought about it some more and while it's cool to see new people playing these games, it does feel like it's a big middle finger from Ninty for everyone who bought the wii u versions. We payed up to $60 for a now inferior version of a game and now a few years later wii u owners have very little to show for it. Really feels like it was pointless to support the wii u. The only thing that I'm kinda glad about is that I didn't pay all that much for most of my wii u games (I bought most of them years after release) so the sting isn't as bad.

Re: Take Centre Court And Trick Shot Your Way To Glory In Mario Tennis Aces This June

Looks super great. Far better than the scam that was Ultra Smash. Aces seems to be using some of the same character models as Ultra Smash (smart and efficient and I really dont blame them). At least we have multiple courts, tournament mode, as well as the ability to play with friends back. (Saying all of that out loud really makes me realize how bare boned Ultra Smash really was)

@Dom can we get a quick write up on the new friends being added to Star Allies. I just want to gush a bit about how excited I am to see Rick, Coo, and Kine as playable characters again. If I remember correctly they haven't been playable since dreamland 3 which was over 20 years ago. Good lord

Re: Code Of Princess EX Is Headed To Nintendo Switch This Summer

Oat

I'm definitely excited by this. I'm one of those people who loved the 3ds release (poor frame rate and all). HD visuals plus improved ai, sign me up! Hopefully it also means a more stable frame rate like the pc version. I also hope they change some of the achievements and remove/change the ones tied to online. Lastly i hope we can get english vo. I loved the voice work of the original and maybe atlus and nicalis can work something out so that we can retain the original english vo.

Re: Soapbox: I'm Secretly Terrified Of An All-Digital Gaming Future

Oat

I'm on the ride and die train for physical games. I would prefer to buy physical over digital 9/10 times with the last one being if the digital option is significantly cheaper than the physical option and/or digital is the only option.

This quote: "...surely it's best for me to actually own these games in physical form rather than trying to jump through Nintendo's archaic, hardware-based ID system? That way, at least I'll have the game itself and it won't be tied to an account system that keeps my titles arbitrarily locked away simply because I can't tie my existing NNID to a "new" system."

This sums up more or less why I hardly bother with digital for Nintendo systems. Nintendo is so backwards when it comes to this stuff. In addition their games rarely go on sale and I'd much rather own my games outright than have a digital license.

Re: Soapbox: My Nintendo's Updated Rewards Scheme Is Anything But Rewarding

Oat

@misfitpierce I was more complaining about the lacklustre deals on games. PSN and Steam will have flash sales in which games can be regularly found for 50% off or more. Meanwhile Nintendo rarely ever hands out such deals and ties discounts around 30% to using it's crappy My Nintendo program in which you have to buy games just to get those discounts

Re: Soapbox: My Nintendo's Updated Rewards Scheme Is Anything But Rewarding

Oat

Nintendo is trying their damnedest to take the reward out of their "reward" program, if you can even call the mess that is my nintendo a rewards program in the first place. What makes it all the more frustrating is that these pathetic discounts are more or less standard fare on almost every other platform. Even better, those other platforms don't require you to buy games in order to receive 30% off of other titles. I honestly would rather have nothing than Nintendo continue with this crap.

Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend?

Oat

I'll be playing through the Alliance Alive demo that released on the 3ds. I'm one of those weirdos who actually liked Legend of Legacy when it came out back in 2015. From the few reviews I've seen so far it seems like it's more of that game but with a better story and more streamlined combat. Then hopefully if I have the time I'll get to playing Steamworld Dig 2 and then Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I'm the same with the NES zeldas. I was playing through Zelda 1 last year right before Botw due to how much people were claiming Botw was a return to form. Truth be told while I like Zelda 1 more than I did when I was a kid (I freaking hated it) I still feel like it's aged very poorly and is an overall fairly dated game. There are a lot of those early nes game frustrations that really get on my nerves.

Re: Review: Mercenary Kings Reloaded (Switch eShop)

Oat

I completely agree with the score on this one. I just could not get into this game. The visuals make you want to play it like metal slug but in actuality the game is like if you took metal slug and added the weight mechanics, tedious grinding, and time limits of monster hunter with a stupid gears of war style reload mechanic that turns a fun run and gun game into a tedious grind that seemingly wants you to stop having fun at every turn.

Re: Talking Point: What Games Are You Playing This Weekend?

Oat

Finally got around to playing SteamWorld Dig 1 now that SteamWorld Dig 2 is out on 3ds. I really forgot how freaking good this game was. I'm almost done with it. I plan on playing through Dig 2 once I finish it and then after Dig 2 I'll finally start Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate because my friend is a nut about this franchise and I'd like to have a game I can play with him

Re: Review: SteamWorld Dig 2 (3DS eShop)

Oat

I'm so happy that Image & form took the time to port this game to the 3ds. I really do appreciate how they're still still supporting the system even after other indies have all but abandoned the 3ds. They'll be getting my money day 1 (or 2, I get paid on Friday haha)

Re: Random: Nintendo Lands Itself In Hot Water With Norway

Oat

Personally I'm all for adding this option. I remember back before steam added a refund policy there were certain games I would pass up, even on sale because I wasn't sure if id like them and I didn't want to be stuck with a game I didn't like with way of getting my money back. I think the consumer should be able to cancel his/her pre-order and it shouldn't be different simply because it's digital

Re: Review: Wanderjahr TryAgainOrWalkAway (Switch eShop)

Oat

@Muddy_4_Ever might and magic clash of heroes was one of the best impulse buys I ever made. I saw a used copy in a gamestop and randomly decided to buy it even though I knew nothing about it. Turned out to be a phenomenal puzzle game
