Wow! Lords of Exile looks amazing for retro fans!

Jubilee also doesn’t seem half bad either.

Also interested in Tomb Raider 1-3 Trilogy, and Arzette (bought the physical LRG copy last week), but to be honest, another surprise came this week in a NEW sequel to Croc’s World!

Pole Position for the retro win. Too many memories of playing the arcade game at the pizza shop and intent on finishing that tricky "Fuji" level!

Gravity Circuit pulls at the Mega Man heart strings for me, so this is another must on my Wish List.

Re: Shantae's Cancelled Game Boy Advance Project 'Risky Revolution' Is Being Revived

Magrane

I don't understand the hate coming from some of those that think this shouldn't JUST be on a GBA. That's the whole freakin' point.......it's a revived project and it belongs on the console designed for. Sure, it will be digital some day but I think introducing it physically is an homage to the times and well-thought out. How sad ppl won't shell out the price of a piece of electronic gaming art.

The hate for anything physical......including the want to pirate, is unreal.

Re: Poll: Super Mario All-Stars Is 30 Years Old - Do You Prefer The NES Or SNES Versions Of The Classics?

Magrane

@Olliemar28 I would agree with your statement especially with Part 1 and Lost Levels. Just isn't the same.

I remember when I first played Super Mario All-Stars on the SNES and being blown away and excited about the "Super Mario World-ish" graphics. Those alone made me feel each game was brand new and enticed me to go through each level of each game again to spot the differences. The music alone was nice to hear, and even then I thought "how brilliant of these guys to give us this treat". Definitely hours of fun still to this day but admittedly I feel the GBA versions hands-down are the remasters these games needed.

Remasters of a remake. Heh...!

Re: Feature: 8 Strangest Super Mario Urban Legends - Which Mario Myths Are True?

Magrane

Trying to recall a Mario myth from the NES days in the school playgrounds.......

For the original Super Mario Bros. I recall people would talk about Minus World (which is obviously true now) and worlds after the flagpole (which was true with the Lost Levels). I don't think I've heard any of the above but I'll come back and re-edit if I remember any more from my childhood at least.

Re: Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise Of The Dragons Lands On Switch In July

Magrane

@zbinks the way I see it, Capcom released Mighty Final Fight, which was also a chibi cartoon fighter. This is Double Dragon’s iteration of it, so we may see the style we are preferring next time. Coupled the fact TMNT Shredder’s Revenge did well with the style last year, they may be giving it a try.

Crazy how Bubble Monsters, Magic Bubble Shooter, and Puzzle Bobble are released the same day. It’s like choosing between a fresh Pizza Hut pizza, the cheaper Celeste frozen alternative next to it, or making your own from home with ketchup, Kraft and toast.

Re: Random: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Tops GQ's 100 Greatest Games Of All Time

Magrane

I want to see a list where industry experts throw the gauntlet down and say “these are the games that have had an influence on the rest of the industry”. I don't think BOTW would be in the top ten considering the games that have preceded it, but there’s no doubt this game was a programming achievement.

It shouldn’t even be enumerated- just grouped.

Re: Nintendo's Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom TV Ad Might Be Its Best One Ever

Magrane

I think some of the ppl in this chat are looking at the commercial a bit too deep for a message that really isn’t there.

Guy works hard, guy is tired and stays up late probably working..has to go to bed, guy has an escapist moment, guy takes escapist moment on his bus ride to work. Zelda game - escapism from long work days.

A game marketed to adults as opposed to the 90s when the stigma of adults playing them was very much a thing, and the commercials were zanier for the kids.

That’s it!

Re: Soapbox: Game & Watch Still Scratches A Very Particular Itch, And I Need More

Magrane

I want to add (before Darknyht’s post) that yes, those Tiger electronic games were awesome in their own way too, releasing travel-G&W rivaled versions of early modern 90s games like Mega Man 3, TMNT, even MK I believe. I owned Top Gun for it and loved every minute I played it.

My brother got Donkey Kong Jr G&W and we both played it so much the green outside frame fell off! I would use my Tropical Fish as a wake up alarm for middle school. I loved that litlte orange thing. I’m still tempted to get one offline.

Maybe Time Extension can do an article on the Tiger Electronics ones!

Re: Soapbox: Game & Watch Still Scratches A Very Particular Itch, And I Need More

Magrane

My first exposure to Nintendo was the Game & Watch game Tropical Fish when I visited Bangkok as a kid in 1986. Who knew how much that would change my life. It’s included in Game & Watch Gallery 4 if you really dig in and get the extra games but the story behind Gunpei coming up with these games on a weekly basis is legendary.

As far as the latest releases go, that should give a fair hint that the demand isn’t really there for a physical collection of them all. I downloaded the digital ones off of the 3DS eShop to make up for that lacking nostalgia.

Re: 'Double Dragon Gaiden' Announced With Scott Pilgrim-Inspired Visuals And Gameplay

Magrane

@Serpenterror how did DD4 fail ? It was a complete homage and sold well from the looks of it.

This doesn’t look like a winner to me since it came from the dev team that made a mediocre beat ‘em up. Then again it could work, it’s just that this game is more chibi faux retro flash than street wise gritty urban fist-foot combat - seems distracting for a game known to be darker.
