@BanjoPickles It’s a fun game and I liked it in the 8-bit days. There was an NES version but only in Japan (still playable and in English). 5 levels of distinct circus acts and the catchy chip tune music.
Physical for me. I’ve waited years for Switch titles to be released physically and my patience has paid off. For those of you that can’t handle waiting or are just naturally impulsive, I get why the rush to digital and decrying those that buy physical.
Let’s face it: if you really don’t care about losing your games in a future electronic loss, then digital is a clean way to go. Even cheaper. But you can’t compare it if you’re either looking for a permanent cost investment (yes, even opened they have value nowadays) or simply something to showcase in hand. This article presents strong arguments.
And to be fair, the average age of the collectors are from the pre-social media days.
I buy both sometimes if the title has great replay value. Once it’s gone, I still have the physical in hand!
@BanjoPickles 1. Agreed, it would have to be NIntendo-focused, so it wouldn’t be the same game but maybe a new type of compilation.
2. $$$ - and also, they’re not giving it back but rather distributing to a fan-base that’s a strict Nintendo audience. Case in point, Banjo-Kazooie in Super Smash Bros.
3. That’s what they hinted at last year, but that doesn’t mean it will ever see the light of day when they’re finished with that inaugural year.
4. I bet it would, like your first point suggested!
5. If both the demand is high enough and releasing a compilation title isn’t that expensive, I believe it’s worth a shot!
@Ventilator It can be easily seen that way: tit for tat. MS knew going in with their gesture of money-making goodwill that Nintendo wouldn’t cede their IP showing up anywhere else. But I do commend MS for laying the groundwork for future collaboration based on these initial releases (way....future...).
That being said, it would only be a proper fit some day for that collection to appear on a Nintendo console based on what I’ve stated.
@Ventilator I think you’re confusing this board for a Microsoft one? I think the points our colleagues are making is that we want Rare Replay on the Switch. That’s when the hardcore Nintendo fans will actually celebrate. And no, we don’t blame Nintendo for a re-release block of GoldenEye. We want it released on a Nintendo platform more so the other ones, and I think Nintendo is still hoping one day for a similar exclusive. Wishful thinking, I know.
Still hoping one day we get that Rare Replay game. At least half the company’s history is based on the Nintendo platforms.
I have waited purposely 3 years with anticipation that this day would come. I never played it as a result, in defiance of going digital and double dipping. I wanted this in a preserved cart form.
And finally I get to indulge. Needless to say I’m super excited to dive into this game....!
Looking forward to purchasing this game, sounds like a fun and semi short treat.
Now, that being said: the lack of a map being a deal-killer AND a con?? Really?! C’mon Nintendo gamers.......back in the day, we had to draw our own maps to play. It was part of the fun of the Metroidvanias. I think ppl here are thinking of a casual game to play, so then I can see why drawing your own map could be cumbersome. But Metroidvanias aren’t meant to be that easy anyway. You’ll feel more accomplished if you did it yourself.
Okay, let me get off of my old 8-bit rocking chair now......!
@BestNerdLife Fair, your altruism is duly noted, but I respectfully disagree. Safety first of course, but now more than ever there’s a circumstance and good explanation on the clamor: required home isolation and economic downturn escapism. I think it’s good to have some sort of pressure for the developers to step up their game.....all of course under the banner it’s done safely. Impatient ppl will always have a reason to complain.
I believe we can all be patient though for a great game to unfold regardless of the current hardships. But this kind of fire in the industry is what not only widens its customer base but also spur creativity among developers.
@Dang69 Agreed. Not a fan of this NL article.....there are two others that highlight the disappointment from readers already in the Comments section but it doesn’t help either if the poll itself isn’t clear.
@BestNerdLife I think you missed his point that how are we supposed to be feeling surprised when the competition is able to deliver more products during COVID? I think myself it’s ok to feel disappointment and not account for the virus impact because ppl are nowadays more so looking to the Big N and other developers for more joy. No one has forgotten COVID, trust me.
That being said, I thought the mini was good but don’t know how I feel about it being like a “taste” of a bigger fuller one. Makes me think a fuller one is coming soon.
It does stifle creativity a bit, but I agree that Goombario and the other modified characters seem a bit out of place in the Mario universe. I’ve always regarded them as one-off spin-offs.
What surprises me is that the villager (was it? Or a real secondary player?)wrote that hashtag. I didn’t believe the NPC would get into politics in this game.
I do like that you can inspect it and see everyone’s wishes. How neat ☺️
Completely silly article. But it’s nice for Ryan to bring this up for discussion. I heard a rumor there may be a hack to swim back to your island instead of returning to the airport!
I love how the worst feature and “black mark” against it is the lack of a save feature. Seriously..?! I would just contribute that to the game’s difficulty level. Part of a game’s enjoyment balance is the challenge presented and the journey. Not everything is going to be handed to you in a bread basket, kids. Smh
Awesome news. I may go for the Wii U release but to be honest I’m still hoping for a physical 3DS release before I pull the trigger on that digital version.
@masterLEON isn’t V Special on their Wii Anthology version ? It’s what I’ve been reading in multiple product listings.
I think I may have to get the Anthology if that’s the case. I feel shortchanged that they would not include the VI game. And if V Special is in the PS2 Anthology version, I’m good. I remember hearing back then how bad the Wii version was.
I’m glad Billy hung in there and fought for a legacy he was obviously proud of. Lucky for him he had strong evidence to prove that the Guiness scores were legitimate. Congratulations sir!
@VinnieMii There probably was a licensing issue as Nintendo had those rights in the 90’s and it belongs to someone else now.
But as I mentioned before in other thread, I’m very much disappointed with Nintendo’s lack of localization effort. I can’t enjoy this game or know what’s going on, which choice to pick etc. - seems like a waste of an entry if you ask me without that translation on a North American game store.
I guess it may be just me on this.....but frankly I haven’t been a fan of the Japanese releases in the NA NES and SNES apps. It’s completely in another language and Nintendo not only didn’t bother with a localization effort, but no instructions either! I’m sorry but this is sheer laziness on their part and frustrating for me, who looks forward to playing out-of-region games and their cultural references.
The text really takes the fun out of it for me (no offense to my Asian peers). I would rather not struggle with deciphering the non-Roman alphabet language and just enjoy the game for what it is.
@NESlover85 I remember the level theme songs too even though I probably didn’t play it as much as you! That goes something to say about the chiptune composers if we are STILL remembering 30 years later!
@mesome713 But it’s up to the developer themselves to choose to publish the game. Look at Stardew Valley for the Switch. Sells great but the developer is holding out on a physical publish, probably due to the cost. And I’m also sure these same companies are not going to sell games that are poor if they are not marketable. On top of all that, the small publishing companies themselves take a “gamble” if they don’t make it limited as what are they going to do with a stock of game that blows?
I don’t see the gamble perspective. They sell a product and you enjoy it because now you have a physical versus electronic version. The end. Let the collectors make the choice as a possible investment.
And a developer will make a physical version of a good game if they know it will sell and they have the money to invest in that. Dotemu sure doesn’t and that’s why it made multiple offers.
@mesome713 Well....yes, they would become rare. The games themselves are not, because you can purchase it digitally, but for those of us that feel a physical edition is more valuable for longevity sake, publishing 3K or 4K would indeed have a specific finite number to hunt for if you’re a collector. I don’t disagree about the FOMO tactics but at least they are not kidding that the chances of seeing it physical elsewhere are pretty slim.
@Phostachio Oh I did not doubt that. But its current numbers as well as the rate of copies being sold is a total COVID-19 isolation influence. New Leaf gradually got their numbers over years. I think Nintendo themselves admitted that they didn’t expect this under other circumstances.
A game that involves a lot of downtime could not have had a better release timing than this.
@GoblinKing86 I disagree on that. There’s no doubt the game’s sales were fueled by the COVID-19 isolation impact. Coupled with the social media explosion as well, word of mouth spread so a lot of the interest in sales for the game and the Switch are also just major interest in the talk of the town.
This is no different than what happened in 1997 with FFVII and the PlayStation.
I purposely held back years from the digital purchase for this day to arrive. Finally hearing back from the creator on the possibility is a glimmer of hope my patience paid off.
Great article, thank you for posting this excerpt. Fits right in with the book’s topic of arcade consoles coming to the home, and Tengen did exactly that for the NES.
Back then, even as a12-yr old, I knew about the unlicensed Tengen ports and admittedly thought they were a great addition to the library. No where else did we get arcade ports of Super Sprint, Road Runner, & SEGA Master System games like Alien Syndrome (fun 2-player simultaneous game!). Their quality wasn’t bad either!
The 80’s and 90’s were such a fun time for video game consumers.
@earthb0und I agree with you. This review doesn't allow for it to stand on its own and the main complaint was that "it was too easy". Really? Maybe the game is meant for......children, perhaps? A "4" is wayyyy too harsh of a score if the story and graphics were good.
I hope future reviews don't rely on this Zelda comparison. Sheesh.
I get it if it were Terry Bogard, Haohmaru or Mai, but my retro vote would push for Paul & Vince - the Ikari Warriors! Now known though as Ralf and Clark though.......😳🤷🏻♂️
