Well written article and thank you sharing your personal struggle amidst Switch gaming. You’ve always been a good contributor here and I follow your recommendations closely.
Beautiful looking game, and I’m getting Castle Crashers vibes. In fact, this is the game you’d probably get if you mixed Lord of the Rings with it. With Dotemu behind it though, it’s not a game to dismiss. Looking forward to a demo!
@OrtadragoonX the ones on the NSO do, however. An example of this is Panel de Pon and just outright guessing the mechanics simply because you can’t read kanji.
But the way considering how awesome their first Kunio collection was, in offering localized versions of the Japan-only games, I have high hopes for this!
@Toastmaster “ One of the worst things about 1980's and 1990's in gaming and movies, were all the alternate names of everything.”
I completely disagree. The 80s and 90s were phenomenal at least in the willingness to bring it to the west with a means to market the game or movie. The sales or interest wouldn’t be as high if you didn’t rename it to something relatable or even “cooler”.
Remember , that was a time before globalization is what it is now, especially with the internet. Even though it now means sorting out different titles for the same game, there was a necessary evil I guess to the sales process.
Nintendo has even gotten so lazy about the localization of even the titles in their NSO because it is not affecting their sales: the downside of that decision is just general lack of interest to play them.
@PKDuckman I still don't understand why the original game was not included. I don't mind the graphics too much but part of the allure of any remaster is how it's changed since the source material. Seems like a big ball drop to me :--/
A fun remake of MM 1-6, a collection of the Legends games (with Inafune coming back to do part 3), and finally Mega Man 12 with multiple Robot Master paths like Konami did for Castlevania 3. Each path would lead to a new blend of the Robot Master weapons.
“ Whether or not the stars will align for Starfy's future return in a brand-new series entry is uncertain, but we're delighted that Switch owners now have easy access to this fantastic little series, even if they're not localised. Go explore those stars.”
What a shame we can even get Nintendo to localize these games. I’m already watching the posted video and I’m bored to tears not being able to understand what’s going on. It’s frustrating that Nintendo has taken this lazy approach with the NSO games. There is a sense of lost enjoyment and laissez faire with these import games. Why not bring a whole text based RPG at this point 😡
Another Switch NSO NES shadow drop, and yet another game that is from another region and not even translated. Never heard of Mystery of Atlantis but very disappointing they can’t put in the time to present an English version of the game.
@miwa mine too except the Genesis got the first real console port of the game back in the ‘90’s. For sure super excited it will be on an accessible console now.
@Chopper25 if it’s a Game Boy game then it deserves to be on this site.
I don’t know about the developer’s past but those accusations sound pretty serious. The game looks really well done and worthy of a purchase.
The main thing that bothers me from this review is the Cons. “ Another gripe we have is death resulting in us being returned to the world with the amount of health we had at the last save point, instead of replenishing it. ”
This “gripe” sounds like a normal difficult setting in older games and not a true complaint of performance. Maybe of replayability…
30 FPS is pretty decent. Don’t understand why gamers nowadays are so stressed over it.
As a massive DD fan, and the fact this game expanded the Double Dragon lore by giving background characters some depth, this move was long overdue and even hinted at.
Excited to finally see the first Mighty Gunvolt in physical cart. This will be a must buy for me even though I own Burst physical and digital. That first game was well done and highly recommended for Mega Man fans. Those bosses aren’t easy!
@JJtheTexan I’ll settle for a Southeast Asia version with the English language instead, as offered in PlayAsia hopefully.
I pre-ordered this game from hearsay only, on the quality and experience other players had in the arcade scene with it. One of the critiques I had heard was it was surprisingly fun for an attempt to make it a modern homage beat-em up to the Konami games, prior to the console re-release.
I will have no regrets still even if the game turns out lackluster, simply because it’s the Turtles. Hoping to have a different impression later tonight!
My reaction: Super R -Type: Cool addition, even emulates the slow down the early SNES games were known for….😤
Amazing Hebereke: Feel my wrath Nintendo. Lazy addition by not providing the language change. Hopefully it’s intuitive enough……
Wrecking Crew ‘98: Neato, a pseudo sequel to the original game! Once again, another Super Famicom title, but hoping it’s intuitive enough as well. I loved the first one.
@Fizza They could have the decency to translate or localize them. Most of us can’t read Japanese…..tbh it ruined my enjoyment of some of those games where the text is required.
I love these promotional collaborations! Reminds me of the Mario Kart Mercedes Benz vehicles.
Definitely hitting up IHOP soon for my Knuckles sandwich (ha! to the pun).
@rjejr I came in here to type the same thing. Developers are getting their games killed with the reviews that way, rightfully so, and on top of that, it’s free work for the developer too. Quality does go out the window nowadays and I wish more and more ppl would call them out on it.
@Dang_69 Dr. Mario GB is the best version! It is to the NES version what Tetris GB was. Far from unnecessary.
@OldManHermit no way man, Dr. Mario GB was my first entry to the experience and the tunes are much catchier. The 3 colors are distinguishable and the game is just as fun.
I’m rather surprised Nintendo Life didn’t cover the special video release itself in one article. Kind of frustrating to see the articles piece-mealed with news rather than first enjoy the announcement in its entirety.
@Fizza why would the game’s short length be the reason for its resistance its release? The game is still super enjoyable and you can never go wrong with a Mario game.
That being said, I suspect it will be remade on the Switch along the lines of the recent remakes, so that’s why the hold. @ibookboyuk hit the nail on my head when I noticed the remake-per-console pattern,
@somnambulance “Starting over” allows for new creativity to seep in. There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy multiple new iterations with the common vision as opposed to being tied down to the same lore.

Heck, even in defeat, his stories also implied that if you dust off, look for a new creative solution, and even immerse yourself in training, you will come back better in your new attempt!
Great article, thank you Alana! The Mario influence took me by surprise!
It’s interesting they held off a week to announce it. It makes sense from a way for the family and close friends to mourn in secrecy. Toriyama-sensei was also very private.
Im sure we will see more tributes this weekend from all of colleagues. What an impact!
What a loss to humanity. On the Lunar Year of the Dragon no less. Dragon Ball, along with his other creative works of art, was a part of the way my life was starting to shape out in high school in the early 90’s. His story telling influenced my appreciation of Japanese culture, the language, the role model of true action scenes, and finally my own and many other comic book and animated works of art here in the States as we headed into the late 90s and early 2000s. He was and is a cultural icon in Japan. Nowadays, there is not one superhero movie writer/creator I can think of who hasn’t attributed him as an influence.
The even sadder part is that he was still creating even after that big break after DB. @Toastmaster Thank you for your time in the reply.
So, I do understand the relationship Rare had as a developer of games to Nintendo and other publishers in the NES era. In fact I loved their games published by Milton Bradley (Captain Skyhawk and Marble Madness are two that come to mind).
That being said, I think you misunderstood still what the Nintendo Rare Replay fans have been communicating here. The sense of ownership doesn’t mean one of accountability or liability, but of one of nostalgia. The people clamoring for this release are simply asking it on a Nintendo console due to that connection. That’s where that sense of “belonging” comes from. Put the games, which were released on a Nintendo console the first time, back on a Nintendo console. There is something about that “at home” feeling those games would be if that was the case. The first Battletoads may have been a multi platform release, but it was on the NES years prior to those ports and frankly the console source of their popularity.
I’m the guy who would say games developed by Monolith, and that originally appeared on the PlayStation, should have a re release there. Final Fantasy 7 + and Metal Gear Solid games can nostalgically claim Sony as their homes.
Now, you’re implying the emulator itself is buggy, wouldn’t be able to handle it, etc. What we have seen so far on NSO or Arcade Archives is contrary to this, so to me that’s just a matter of opinion. Let the developers come back and claim it simply can’t be done perfectly…….but they won’t 🙂.
@Toastmaster that’s great you got that signed Rare Replay box, kudos to you.
The point you’re making remains moot though. It’s not about the price or affordability but simply that the titles, which ORIGINATED on the NES almost 40 years ago, BELONG on a Nintendo console. At least that’s how the retro games’ fans feel when a Nintendo console, portable no less, is excluded from something so visually and nostalgically obvious.
It has NOTHING to do with who owned what and how long. What matters is where they came from.
Don’t worry dude, we are over it now, especially as we head to cloud gaming and the obvious piece-mealing. But that doesn’t mean the games popping up separately will never happen 🙄
@Nintendo4Sonic I disagree. RC Pro Am brought something to the table, but it’s the SNES Battletoads game NOT on any other compilation that should deserve a revisit for older and new gamers.
Nostalgically, I have been playing RC ProAm. It’s amazing how much the brain remembers as it was instant muscle memory after 30 yrs to know when to turn, where the track items were, and the Orange vehicle’s crazy behavior.
You have got to hand it to Rare; they were an over-the-top developer who maximized the use of colors, music and special effects. You know they crafted something right when you remember it all, despite being away from it for so long.
