Re: River City Ransom Director & Miracle Kidz President Passes Away

The man changed the beat ‘em up gaming world forever with Kunio games, especially River City Ransom. He leaves a legacy that’s pretty incalculable with the inspiration he created among countless developers of today and just the imagination of gaming storytellers. As an example, I’m pretty sure the Wayforward River City Girls development team can attest to that and their continued successes. RIP to a true visionary.

Re: Talking Point: What Was Your First Mario Kart Game?

Magrane

The first one I played was Super Mario Kart. I already posted my origin story with this in a comment from the prior NL article celebrating the anniversary.

But favorite of all time? Mario Kart Wii comes very close but definitely Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Per the reasons listed by @Gamecuber - well put sir! The Wii version was fun and the weekly challenges at the time were pretty cool. Also, Coconut Mall and Miis. 😇😉

I’m also remembering how a green shell would ping pong around in Battle Mode. And like, significant minutes later come back to hit you because you had forgotten it. Laying out what seemed like mine field traps and hiding in glee. I even remember being able to look across a field and see a tiny Mode 7 kart get hit. This was a big deal back then!

Battle Modes 2 and 4 were the go-to for fun extended plays.

Re: Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection - The New Gold Standard For Retro Compilations

Today will be remembered in Turtle history as the day the fans finally got THE wish at least 20 years in the making. Im constantly looking out the window for Amazon to show up. I bought both Collector’s and standard editions because……..go green machine!

Also excited to finally commit to finishing Radical Rescue and checking out Tournament Fighters outside of the SNES one.

What’s this I hear that the arcade version doesn’t have the theme song as the original cabinets did?! Oooofff…..if so, this game went from 100 to only 98% complete! Major bummer amigos!

My first exposure to Super Mario Kart was at the 1992 (1991?) Summer CES in Chicago. For those of you that didn’t know, there were two major electronic shows back in the day where game companies previewed their games to the industry, before the gaming industry moved to doing it just once a year at E3. I remember the joy of seeing it, the Mario characters racing each other in this new genre of gaming. And back then the colorful graphics, Mode 7 and music. I couldn’t wait for the release date. Once bought that same year, that led to hours and hours ….and hours! of constant nightly racing with friends. I have many memories of cheese pizzas, critical Battle Mode wins and laughing at the ways we would “drift and shoot a shell” in what was back then massive open playfields (hey those balloon bursts took a long time because of the hiding and wide space). Trust me when I say the frustration of waiting a good handful of years before the 3D(gasp!) sequel on N64.

WOW. Big news and a loss to not only this site but to the gaming review craft. He was a MAJOR Mega Man fan and it’s fair to say I trusted my general gaming choices because of his reviews (An April 2015 comment on Siesta Fiesta comes to mind on the 3DS). I connected with his writing as a retro and portable video game fan, as he verbalized the same opinions I had of general platform and puzzle games. I would argue he was an influencer here with his style and gaming intelligence.

I was wondering where he went, to be honest, just recently. I will sincerely miss him.

Re: A Japan-Only Mega Man Game Just Shadow Dropped On The Switch (US)

Magrane

@kkslider5552000 no fanfare because of lack of promotion by the developer. I’m so glad these obscure titles are coming.

All we need is Battle & Chase, the 3 Mega Man Legends games, the two Super Game Boy EXE games, the GB games and Mega Man Soccer to become Switch available in another new compilation!

Re: A Japan-Only Mega Man Game Just Shadow Dropped On The Switch (US)

Magrane

Wow!! Had no idea this game existed!! I just bought the Mega Man arcade games on Capcom Arcade Stadium 2, so this will be a nice demastered supplement: the 8 bit versions of both! Now it begs to ask, why wasn’t this released Stateside?! I would have loved to own this!

I’d like to also add that I think it’s lazy for a developer not to localize a Japanese game. For me it ruins it if I have to read illegible text.

Almost feels like a new 8-bit Mega Man to me from the screenshots. Thank you NL!

Re: Best Switch Games For Short Play Sessions

Magrane

I’d like to add Airfield Mania (a knock off of Flight Control) and Space Dave (fun quirky shooter) to this pick-up-and-go list. To be honest PAC Man Museum Plus is also fun to just randomly play any of the fun collected arcade games!

Re: Capcom's Mega Man Series Has Now Sold 38 Million Units Worldwide

Magrane

@Serpenterror Totally agree with this. Wish Mega Man & Bass also hit the SNES back then, but Mega Man 8 and X4 on the SNES itself would have probably been a downgrade.

Definitely needed The Wily Wars on the SNES. In the vein of Super Mario All Stars, it would have done well.

Also, still pretty upset Street Fighter X Mega Man isn’t on consoles. Was hoping for it to pop up on 3DS.

Re: Video: Take A Look At The Regional Differences In The Mario Kart Series

Magrane

@Rosalinho I completely agree that the US voices are better. In the US at the time, at least, it made more sense to do it since it made players connect the unique voice to the Super Mario 64 game and get ppl used to Charles Martinet’s talent.

I think there’s a bunch of things odd to me with the first handful of comments. I guess as adults it makes sense to say, “gee that could be sparkling apple cider or soda. Why does Nintendo have to have such a deal?” But children don’t associate as most adults do with “oh it must be a soda or non alcoholic” when the bottles are clearly resembling as such in other media. Children are impressionable and some things are worth the effort changing. Some mimic what they see, some think the behavior is acceptable. I appreciate they took the time to make those changes - the differences are zero big deal themselves anyway.

Re: Round Up: Every Nintendo Switch Game Featured During Nacon Connect 2022

Magrane

@samuelvictor my feelings are the same. I appreciate your candor and knowledge in your NL replies! Robocop back then, even part 2, was so shockingly violent back then. Now….not so much, so I’m curious what this generation thinks of that movie. I only saw part 2 on the big screen as a kid. I was rooting for the 90’s TV series and the cartoons to work out. I’m just glad Peter Weller continues to own it!

Re: Round Up: Every Nintendo Switch Game Featured During Nacon Connect 2022

@samuelvictor Agree with your comments as usual. I totally forgot about the Robocop Game Boy music reference! For me, I really enjoyed the first two movies. The NES and arcade games were also done well.

I, for one, am excited about this HD Switch game. The game better get the license to the movie music! It would complete the package….here’s hoping they knock it out of the park.
