Re: Feature: Nintendo Life's Biggest Gaming Regrets

Mach_Rider

I've got a few, but nothing TOO major, thankfully...

One is, as a kid, I bought the big box PC version of "Cadillacs & Dinosaurs: The Second Cataclysm" for 10 bucks. I couldn't run it properly on my PC though, it had no sound, so my parents made me return it...

Another regret - I once found a bunch of neat SNES games at a local store - Donkey Kong Country, an NTSC copy of "UN Squadron" and a region cartridge converter, all dirt cheap...I ended up selling them a few weeks later, again, relatively cheap, because I never thought I'd actually own a SNES. That UN Squadron still hurts a bit...

And there are also a few bootleg GBA carts I lent to a friend, who, at one point, just dropped off the face of the Earth and I never got them back...among them were TMNT (2007) and Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX...at least they were bootlegs, I guess...

Re: Aspyr's Star Wars Games On Switch Are Currently Up To 50% Off (US)

Mach_Rider

@Paraka How so? Rogue Squadron was a multi-platform game, since it was also on PC, and the phrase itself is constantly used in other Star Wars media, so it's not like there's an issue with the title itself. Nintendo's stake only goes as far as publishing the N64 version of the first game. RS 2 and 3 were published by LucasArts themselves and all three games were developed by Factor 5, who, if given the chance, would probably gladly re-master the games, like they're currently doing with Turrican.

Man, "The Immortal" brings back so many good memories! Bought it for my cousin's birthday back in the day (since he had a Genesis), but he never made it past the first level (with my help too!). I eventually got said Genesis as a hand-me-down and "The Immortal" was one of the games I spent the most time with, until I beat it. I go back to it from time to time and beat the NES version on Switch for the first time as well.

Seeing this trailer made me feel kind of warm and fuzzy inside, reminding me of the good ol' days. And they picked my favourite track from the game too!

Re: Random: Forget Dread, It's All About Metroid: Other M On Twitter Right Now

Mach_Rider

I loved Other M at launch and I still like it. Gameplay-wise it's great. It's the writing where it kind of falls apart. Some of the problems could've been fixed in translation, considering how much of the spoken lines are actually internal monologue...it's just so very...Japanese sounding in terms of phrasing, even in the English version.

The writing isn't bad overall, it's just clunky. And the game, as a whole, is great. I included it in my Pre-Dread Metroid marathon.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 16th)

Mach_Rider

Metroid Dread...again. Beat it on Normal in 7.5 hours and then took an additional 2.5 for 100% item collection.
Beat it on Hard in 6 hours last night...but on a different save file and now I'm kicking myself because the ending rewards aren't shared between files...so now I gotta do it again on my OTHER file...but hey, at least I'm dying to play the game more, so I got that going for me, which is nice

I could go for the under 4 hours...but I doubt I'd be able to do it just yet...

Re: Metroid Dread: Post-Game Unlocks - How To Unlock All Chozo Archives, All Metroid Game Art, All Post-Game Content

Mach_Rider

I did Normal mode on my first playthrough in 7.5 hours.
Then copied that save and did 100% item collection on it in another 2.5 making for a total of 10 hours.

So I decided to start Hard Mode on a separate save file (currently 4 hours into it, but am moving faster than in my Normal save, so I believe I should shave off at least an hour off my original time). However, I'm terribly disappointed by the fact that unlockables are NOT shared between saves. That's just...dumb. And naturally, I discovered this after going through more than half of hard mode...So I guess my second playthrough on Hard will be on my original save file and I'll hopefully manage to snag all rewards for playing on Hard in one go...but I doubt I'll be able to beat it in under 4 hours soon...

@RCGamer, since I unlocked 2 endings for beating the game under 8 hours on the first go, my guess is if you beat it on Hard under 4 hours the first time round, you'll unlock all 3 Hard Mode endings at the same time.

Re: Metroid Dread: All Missile Tank Locations

Mach_Rider

@PurpleSquirrel64 YES! EXACTLY!! That one got me stumped, but I was like...there's GOT to be a reason for those paths to be there...There's another similar case where you've got to jump on the sliding path, without Shinesparking, to continue to Speed Boost. They also don't tell you that bouncing off walls/walljumping in the opposite direction keeps the speed boost active too!

Re: Metroid Dread: All Missile Tank Locations

Mach_Rider

@PurpleSquirrel64
Same thing here. I thought there's another upgrade somewhere at first...I was never good at Shinesparking, but I managed. Just collected everything. 100% item completion added 3 hours to my regular playthrough time. And I only looked up the location of two of them.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (October 2nd)

Mach_Rider

I just wrapped up Ys IX and I'm starting a Metroid marathon before Dread. Beat "Zero Mission" last night in a single sitting (such a great experience and still my favourite Metroid game) - 2:20 with 60% item collection, which is decent, considering I haven't played it in years.

Starting "Samus Returns" tonight and hope to beat that, Super and Fusion by the 8th. And watch the movie version of "Other M" if I can squeeze that in too.

The hype is off the charts!

Re: 'Disney Classic Games Collection' Adds Aladdin SNES And "All Versions" Of The Jungle Book

Mach_Rider

"All" versions, yet I don't see the NES version of "The Jungle Book" listed. And unlike the abysmal NES ports of Lion King and Aladdin (talking about the official ones here, there are actually some quite decent unlicensed ports, the best of the bunch being that of the SNES Aladdin), Jungle Book was actually good on NES.

I'd be pissed if the update isn't somehow made available to owners of the previous version. Granted I didn't buy it at full price and I do own the MD versions of all these games on carts, but I'm just a sucker for collections.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Metroid Game?

Mach_Rider

All of them are pretty much great, even the spinoffs (yes, even "Federation Force", while not really Metroid, it was a good game in its own right) but "Zero Mission" is my absolute favourite!

Re: Limited Run Announces Two Double Dragon Physical Releases For Switch

Mach_Rider

The lack of a standalone OST release for Neon is baffling...and sad 🙁 I love that OST, but I'm not giving them an extra 55 bucks for an incomplete OST and a bunch of stuff I don't care for...

Definitely picking up the standard edition of Neon though and maybe the vinyl for DD4, to go along with my other DD records. The physical of 4 though, I believe I'll skip. Not that big of a fan of the series to double-dip on that game.

Re: Feature: Castlevania Season 4 Review - An Epic Ending To Netflix's Hugely Satisfying Series

Mach_Rider

@NicolausCamp I'm not OK with either when they're uncalled for. "Castlevania" could've easily been a PG-13 or even a PG show and still tell the same story. But R-rating sells...

@TheFrenchiestFry, that's also true. I was just giving it as an example of telling a mature story in tasteful manner. Castlevania is a franchise that can be enjoyed by children. How many 8-year-olds played the original games? Showing a single pixel of Succubus breast in SOTN is one thing, showing genitalia waving around is another. Just because something lends itself to gore or explicit content doesn't mean it needs it (the original Mortal Kombat movie, for example). And what this show did with that was definitely not in service of good storytelling.
