Finally, after 19 years of waiting, Metroid fans all around the world are about to discover Samus' fifth mainline adventure. Metroid Dread is out on Nintendo Switch today.
Despite having a seriously dedicated fanbase, Metroid has always been a franchise with a surprisingly low number of total sales (when compared to Nintendo's other major IP, at least). It's had some truly fantastic games over the years, but hasn't ever managed to pull in the numbers that series like The Legend of Zelda or, more recently, Animal Crossing have.
This time, though, Nintendo's been going big with its marketing, and the overall consensus from critics is that this is the grand return fans have been hoping for.
So, we hand it over to you. Will you be buying the game? Are you already a fan of the series, or will this be your first Metroid game? Cast your votes below, and feel free to expand upon your answers in the comments.
If you've already made up your mind, you can go ahead and buy a physical copy here. Or if you're still on the fence, why not let our full review help you to decide.

I'm not jumping up and down excited to play it or anything but my physical copy arrived earlier and I just finished the last game I was playing so I'll probably end up playing it next before it gets lost in the backlog.
nop, waiting for a price drop
Nintendo Life promotes Metroid Dread like Nintendo, eg like crazy! So many posts about it. Ok, we will buy it.
Waiting to see how difficult others find it. Several other sites said it was frustratingly hard.
Don't want to spend £50 only to end up abandoning it after a couple of hours.
@Patendo waiting for a significant price drop in Nintendo games is waiting 3-5 years. Good luck with that. Honestly.
Got mine yesterday but still haven’t played 2 which I bought on 3DS or ever finished Super Metroid or Fusion. So not sure what to do! I feel like this series isn’t actually very story heavy - am I wrong?
Not now. Just too busy with work these days. Gaming time much more limited.
Someday maybe. On a sale perhaps.
I've already got it and played a couple of hours, it's great!
I played Metroid Prime on the Game Cube when it came out and I've meant to play Super Metroid on NSO, but haven't got round to it yet.
Playing this tomorrow whenever it arrives. Hopes it sells very well so the franchise can stop going into cryogenic sleep every generation.
Can’t wait for Metroid Prime 4 after this.
Big Metroid fan.
i only liked the prime games
Yes
@Petew So far, it's not. There hasn't been a time yet where I haven't thought it was 100% my fault when an E.M.M.I caught me.
My special edition came this morning, and it's glorious.
Birthday this week! New Switch! Metroid! Monkey Ball! Rhubarb and Custard after tea!
@Savino Do you ever go to the cinema or buy a Blu-Ray? how much would you pay for either?
Abso-f%#$ing-lutely!
Where's the:
Yes, but not for a while as have too much of a Backlog already
already received mineee!!! It will be my very first metroid.. i tried to play super metroid, but it fells so old.. perhaps ill give another chance.. let's see.. but very excited about dread!
Nope. Not interested.
I already have purchased games (PS4, PS3, Wii and Gamecube) to keep me busy.
Yes sir day one!!
I had the special edition ordered from Nintendo but because I got a new card I couldn't pay with another card. Luckily Game had a copy for sale.
I'm 8 hours in, it's good.
The hype took me, my copy has already arrived!
Mine hasn’t arrived yet. Boohoo for me. Very very excited though. Come to me Samus!
Not sure if today, I missed preorders and I get paid until next week, when I know I most definitively won't find Special Editions or amiibo.
I’ve to wait another week for my SE Metroid Dread and amiibo, due my slow ass postal service. Joys of living in a remote location. 😩
I got my copy yesterday, got about an hour in defeating the first real boss of the game.
I guess it's not bad but small annoytment keep piling up between all the cutscene spam, not being able to turn off the blatant "this room has an item!" - assist, the counter manouver still has no place in this series though at least so far it doesn't seem as intrusive as in the Metroid 2 remake. I also really do not care for the QTE stuff that the boss battle had, just would prefer if I could just play the game and not have to transition to some weird cinematic action mid battle.
I will be picking up my copy in a few hours
My son bought it, so I'll play it once he's done. I do like a two-Switch household - 2x as many games, but I only have to pay for half of them
I want it... but not yet.
Smart thing to do is wait for those buy 2 get 1 sales on Black Friday 😎
Waiting for Hermes to deliver my special edition... and then waiting for me to finish work today so I can play it. I am stoked!
I’ve been playing it all day. Haven’t been absorbed in any games except Smash Bros recently, so it’s fun to have a “project”. This is my first 2D Metroid, and so far it’s great! The EMMI are a little frustrating, just because of the load time after you die. But it’s no problem with difficulty yet. But kind of a stressful game! (As advertised, I guess)
Yes, but not today. Aiming to pick it up between now and the end of the year.
A year ago I might have said no as I wasn't into the genre. BUT NOW since playing Ori 1 and 2 and absolutely adoring them, looks like i've gone a full 180 and is now a yes.
Just waiting for my OLED to arrive before downloading
Will get it after payday next week. Hopefully WarGroove will be completed by then, at least the main single player playthrough, with half the side-quests.
Going to pick it up after work today. Very excited to play this!
I started playing last night and its off to a great start.
Just got it and...i kinda don't like it at all so far...
The control is godawful, the EMMI sections are annoying and the muted palette and screen effects make it hard for me to see some things (Eye condition, 99% sure it's a me problem).
So yeah...i'm barely in and i already need to force myself to continue...
Already bought it. Unfortunatelly I won't have it until next week. Finishing games in my backlog and avoiding spoilers until then.
I'm in for sure, but probably not right away. I just got started on Ryza 2, and Bug Fables is on its way to me. I can't start another game now.
But yes, I'm excited, and happy NintendoLife have an actual big Nintendo release to write about!
Waiting until Christmas
Picking it up right after work!
I've had it since Monday lol so no
@Sam_TSM step your game up
You forgot another option : yes, when it goes on a sale 10 years from now
Happy for all the metroid fans. It’s been a long wait. Enjoy
@fafonio honestly? Haha in the UK some supermarkets will be selling it for £30 in a few weeks and thats not even including blackfriday or xmas sales...... honestly! Enjoy paying more
Getting my copy later this morning. Will also be getting the amiibos as but a few days later via through the mail.
Pre-ordered from Amazon. Current status is "Out for Delivery".
Can. Not. Wait.
I only played the original Metroid on the NES as a kid, I remember beating it over a weekend at a friend's house. I also saw how crazy collector rare the Samus Returns collector edition was so splurged for the Special Edition. It is really nice!
Also got the new Switch OLED but went for black as the white would not look good in my living room.
Will be playing my £27 edition this evening! Thanks Curries!
no. thats it. really.
@Dman10 I love your optimism.
Doesn't look like I'll be playing today as The Game Collection Outlet hasn't dispatched my copy yet waaaa.
Got to sit down and play it for a bit before I have to go get my toddler. I'm not super amazed yet. Let's see though. I'll have time to form an opinion next week.
Amazon says my copy is arriving by 10pm. Hopefully it will be a bit before that, but I won’t play it until the evening anyway.
I don’t know if I can legitimately claim to be a fan of the series. I really enjoyed playing Super Metroid but despite having started it twice (once many years ago and once a few years ago) never finished it. I also at one pointed owned Prime 1 and Prime 3 but never finished them. I played and finished Samus Returns shortly before Dread was announced and I enjoyed that, but thought the Metroid battles were repetitive. I’ve really enjoyed other metroidvanias like Hollow Knight. I think I’ll like Dread from what I’ve heard. Then I plan to go back and try to properly play through some of the older games in the series.
Yes, I downloaded it illegally.
No, Metroid isn't for me. Happy that Metroid fans get this, though.
Yes, I'm getting it eventually, but I'm going to wait until Christmas. Gonna be a long couple of months while everyone is enjoying it but me
My package is delayed, but it’s on the way. Very exciting that Samus is back in a big way.
I'll be grabbing it eventually but I'll wait until Christmas because I have a rule of 1 game per month and Doctor Who Edge of Reality will be that game and next month will be Sherlock Holmes Chapter One. Basically I look forward to playing it eventually but I have other games to play in the meantime.
@K1LLEGAL Yeah, it’s not very story heavy (except for fusion which still isn’t that heavy in story). The main reason to play the other games is to play out the story. There is a lot more of show than tell in the games, but not that much happens so you should be fine.
My favorite video game character and I was able to get the Special Edition and Amiibo today!
I will be picking up my copy today, I had set up time off from work but due to some business developments I won't be able to skip it today. Oh well
@Marathon5150 lucky you, enjoy!!
Hell yah can’t wait to get stuck in.
I am not running to buy it but I might pick it up at some point
Waiting for prime 4 and hopefully the trilogy before that as I never got the chance to play them
Going to store as soon as kids get on bus and off to school. Next 2 days off for this
Maybe at some point, I really like Metroid but I have the feeling I'm not gonna like this one as much. One of my most hated cliché in videogames is having to run from the invincible enemy, it seems Metroid dread is full of that.
@fafonio Yeah same! Hopefully MP4 comes out soon and the series has a steady release.
Got it digitally and squeezed a couple of minutes before going to work. Looking forward to diving into it this weekend!
I just picked it up and Target also had the amiibo set sitting on the shelf so I got one of them too.
I will wait until later.
It was day 1 game for me until I recently played Samus Returns. I liked it but did not finish it.
i will get it someday and it will be my first ever 2D metroid
Bought it at 12:30am EST. It's amazing, if not frustrating as hell sometimes.
60 dollars? No thx.
I was grabbing it today but i was able to snag the metroid dread amiibo pack off best buy this morning (dont think they will be tough to get similar to the last Zelda one) so i will grab dread after i finaly sit down and finish Samus returns on 3DS... Only 15 metroids to go lol.
Waiting for my copy to arrive with my mug... planning to drink coffee and play Metroid tonight after work 😂
I'm getting it... but I'm still undecided whether I'm getting it today or am going to hold off for awhile. I may at least wait until I finish the games I am playing now so I can give Dread my undivided attention. Also, I wouldn't mind playing after strategy guides are made so I don't somehow get lost and walk in circles for 10 hours.
It won't quite be my first Metroid, but all I've played is Super Metroid which I started a couple weeks ago and little bits and bops of games at friend houses as a child. And tons of other Metroidvanias of course...
I've played an hour so far and think it is pretty great. It defintely feels like classic 2D Metroid modernised. Gotta say though, younger me would not have been able to get past the EMMI sections due to being too scared
I bought it day one. Doing my part to make sure RGB89 plays Balan Wonderworld...
YESSSS!!! It's already hereeeeee! today is Samus day! HAPPYYYY!
Was going to wait till this goes cheaper, £50 for 12 hours gameplay put me off. However Argos are selling it for £39.99 and weak old me couldn't resist.
Can’t wait for tonight when wifey goes to sleep so I can spend some time with Samus instead
I got mine in the post early yesterday and it’s been so good. It’s like…. Not even the best Metroid, it’s damn near the best Metroidvania I’ve played. The detail is astounding and damn I just got a power up that changed my appearance (I won’t spoil) and Samus feels even more badass now. Hats off to Mercury Steam; I take back anything negative I’ve ever said and any worries I had with you at the helm. Applause all around — thanks for bringing back my favorite series.
@Leuke I feel like you and I have the exact same idea of what a good night is lol
That sounds perfect.
Samus Returns was my least favorite game in the series, and this sounds like not only more of the same, but even further in that direction. Even harder boss fights are not appealing to me at all. I kind of felt like Samus Returns was more of a spinoff, since it was so drastically different and made by a third party, and I'm a little bit angry they went that route for a sequel. Maybe someone will make a fan demake; that would really appeal to me.
Yes. My copy will arrive next week 😁
Yes. This is the first game I've pre-ordered in a long time, and I'm very excited. Hopefully it works in small doses as these days that's all I can commit
Getting physical with it....yeah.....
3 hours in. Won’t stop soon
At some point , but not sure when with my backlog of games and decreasing time for it . However, Metroid / castlevania is my favorite genre of game aside from rpgs.
Didnt pre order, no hype for the game at all, not interested in the slightest... Soooo naturally went and picked it up this morning 😂. £40 from argos along with an un expected purchase of monkey ball. Damn, i hate it when i accidentally search for something on there website, add it to my cart, add my credit card details and confirm the purchase 😂😜. Banging headach when i got back from town tho so didn't start it. 3 tablets later and a little afternoon nanny nap and im all set to start it in an hour or so. As someone that doesnt mind the idea of a metroidvania style game but has never completed one, im looking forward to it.
Anyone want to add me, my friend code is in my bio. Happy gaming everyone and enjoy the upcoming weekend.
Picked it up today, along with a poster as a pre-order bonus. I loved Fusion so much on the GBA. Dread looks awesome!
I'm waiting for a 3D Metroid, whenever that will be. I won't be shocked if we have to wait for the next gen Switch successor. Dread looks cool, but I can't get into 2D games anymore. If there was a demo, I'd try it.
@Patendo It is a 1st party Nintendi game so have fun waiting!!
Its sitting In my car now waiting til I get home from work
Yeah, I'm getting it... but due to circumstances I don't really feel like explaining, I probably won't be able to play it before February next year.
@CupidStunt I won't be waiting that long! 1st party games go on sale too if you shop around. Enjoy the game if you were an early adopter
Picked up my copy this morning.
@K1LLEGAL Story's not that important in Metroid, and everything you need to know is summed up in the first five minutes of Dread, anyway.
Not day one no, already have to many games, gonna finish them first before buying new.
Yep, have the Collector’s Edition and the amiibo pack! I’ll be playing later.
@BrazillianCara This is sad but we understand. Please avoid spoilers and get ready on February.
I will be getting it eventually however I can't justify it at the moment due to the size of my current backlog, including fairly similar titles. I still haven't 100%ed Hollow Knight for example.
That said, it's pretty funny to see people complaining about the price tag on account of the game being 2D. It's a new mainline entry in a major Nintendo franchise, of course it's full price.
Just arrived at my house. Probably gonna wait till my OLED gets here to play it.
I got it in today. Gonna be playing it after I freshen up from work, should be good!!
I bought it on digital, and physical! I couldn't wait to for the post office to deliver the game, and buying both helps keep the series from being banished to the same dark void Nintendo sent F-ZERO to.
@Patendo Same. Plus used copies will be on eBay after people have finished the game. I will buy it, I just decided against getting it day one. At Walmart for $50 if nothing else.
My brother preordered this with the amiibo for me as a birthday gift. However, my birthday is in early December so let the waiting game begin! This looks really fun. I haven't played Samus Returns but I love the look of the added combat mechanics. Maybe I'll try to find that in the meantime.
Of course I'm getting it! This very weekend.
The £26 preorder price from Curry’s seemed to good to be true but was delivered today. Happy days all.
@BongoBongo snap! High five
Yes. Worth to get day 1. Don’t care that some people will do mental gymnastics and claim this game is not worth the price because it’s not 3D or because the indie game equivalents were cheaper.
Urgent help required. Send money.
only started playing metroid since dread was announced, beat zero mission, samus returns, and fusion, playing through super now, just beat kraid and I'm loving it, my birthday is next wednesday the 13th and I'm getting the game then, hopefully going to beat super metroid this weekend ready for dread
Yep but not at launch. It's another $60 game for about 11 hours to completion...and I mean 100% completion according to how long to beat. Can't justify the price but have fun to those that are picking it up, seems like it's a great experience.
@fafonio Sometimes they don't price drop at all. I think I remember seeing one of the old Pokemon DS games the other day still at the exact same price it would've been at release.
I pre-ordered it, so I'm definitely gonna play it
... after I finish playing Fusion.
@Kyranosaurus exactly. One thing is a deal and another a price drop. The former is about pure luck… the latter is Nintendo economics.
Id rather pay $10 more now than wait 2 years to play a game for $10 less.
Playing some older entries in the series after this one was announced made me realize I don't like Metroid that much.
Yep. I hope this won't be the last 2D Metroid game.
Makes me laugh how people say its a short game at about 10 hours in length. Yeah, maybe once you know the map like the back of your hand after a few runs of it. Ive put in 3 hours and only just got out of the first area. Its a bloody maze🤣. You will spend 10 hours getting mauled my the E.M.M.I 😂😂
I've been playing it all day and looking at the box and I STILL can't believe it's real!!
I'm waiting for the damn delivery guy to give me my damn game. It says he's 10 stops away. I want my damn game!!!!
Genuinely torn whether to buy this.
It gets great reviews and looks really interesting but I’ve never played any Metroid games (despite owning every Nintendo console since the SNES).
I’ve never played Hollow knight and have dabbled with Ori (which I enjoyed but got stuck).
Don’t know whether to chance this or not?!
Yup.
Really enjoying it so far.
@nkarafo that's precisely why I won't buy it, I don't like what I see and you can't 'convince me' I have a brain and that game is meh. I'll play it for 20 bucks maybe...
It's been fun so far, and as tense as I expected going by the reviews. I do have some gripes, however.
1) The biggest is that navigating on small platforms can feel like controlling a piece of ice on a water-covered surface; it's finnicky and results in way too many unnecessary falls (some of which you can't jump back up from directly).
2) I am also thinking that just maybe Metroid Dread has hit that threshold where so many buttons and complex mechanics are involved that it starts becoming a barrier to many players. Many crucial move sets in Metroid Dread involve the simultaneous use of multiple buttons, especially where using the Omega Beam against EMMIs is concerned...and there's the added complexity of brief windows and aiming to consider there as well. Remember that the original Metroid utilized a two-button NES controller and Super Metroid the SNES one with four face buttons and two shoulder buttons. By comparison modern controllers are labyrinthine, and Metroid Dread uses almost every single one...
3) except for the A button, for whatever reason, which for me personally feels like the most natural button for jumping or primary actions such as shooting. And wouldn't you know that there's not a configurator in sight for users to modify the controls and button layouts to our liking.
I'm not disagreeing that there's a great game here; it's just that seeing flaws and potential design pitfalls literally minutes into it reminds me of all the gushing reviews of BotW, which itself is a fantastic game but which also has many shortcomings that those reviews either overlooked or glossed over (examples: limited enemy types, no true dungeons, no "traditional" Zelda items like the Hookshot, etc.). Like BotW, I figure that hindsight a year or so down the road will prove a bit more scrutinizing than review scores based mostly upon initial impressions.
All you people on the fence, with the 60€, listen YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED A 2D GAME LIKE THIS, ok, as soon as you move Samus for the first time and take a look at what’s on the screen, you’ll know where that money went, this is absolutely stunning
Got my OLED Switch and Metroid Dread Special Edition on last Saturday. Been play it for quite sometimes during the week end. This game really pop with OLED Switch. It also plays a lot like the 3DS version which I happens to like a lot as well.
Eff me this game is effing hard.
