During the latest Nintendo Direct, it was revealed a Star Wars classic would be coming to the Switch on 20th April 2022.
This time around it's the third-person action title Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, which made its original debut in 2008. This game was originally developed by Krome Studios, and Aspyr will once again handle the port. This Switch release appears to be a slightly "enhanced" version of the Wii title with improved motion controls and will set you back $19.99 USD on the eShop. It takes up around 3.9GB.
Here's some PR, and a video to go with it:
"Unleash the power of the Force in this classic Star Wars action-adventure. As Darth Vader’s Secret Apprentice, you’ll use devastating Force powers and lightsaber combos as you hunt down Jedi Masters on familiar planets. Use button controls, or opt for motion controls, enhanced from the original Wii version. You can also duel locally with a friend to determine who is the galaxy’s most powerful Jedi. STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed launches on Nintendo Switch on April 20. Pre-orders begin today in Nintendo eShop."
Will you use the Force this April? Comment down below.

$19.99 is ok. Its a classic game with great story. Valve is charging the same for 2 portal games though. It should be little cheaper
Sorry if this sounds negative but, is this game worth playing? I tried it one time and, I just did not Enjoy it, It just didn't feel, fun?
Idk, Because I might give it another shot, because I didn't play to much of it.
Played the PSP version and quite enjoyed that, as well as the sequel. I kind of wish they made a third.
It looked like from the footage that it runs at 60fps, which is super cool, I love that all these Star Wars games are on Switch, I just need Kotor 2 and possibly the classic Battlefronts and I would have everything I need.
Aspyr is doing hecka work here.
Wonder what other Star Wars games be ported on consoles if they went with as modern as the force unleashed?
Not as exciting as some of the 6th generation games we haven't gotten yet but its original canon so I'll support it.
I think they should port II as well. I likely won't buy this without the sequel confirmed.
The controls are a little janky occasionally but I honestly loved the story and gameplay of these games, so much better than the ridiculous new Disney trilogy story wise.
I liked the games, but there is the nostolgia factor, I probably won't get this as my backlog is huge and I'm too busy to play games that often anyways
Way back when, I played this on the Wii only. And it was crazy-ugly-muddy. But the Lightsaber motion controls were pretty amazing for the time.
It's the Wii version? Interesting choice I,must say.
Why are they remastering the Wii version? Surely use the xbox version and then implement the wiis motion controls?
Terrible game, I got it for both Wii and PS3 and did not enjoy either. Probably will give this a passed, had it came bundle with a few better games like Rogue Squadron and Rogue Leader then maybe I'll give it a try again.
While i loved every version i actually proffered this version to the 360 version so this is a win for me.
So long as this is the Wii version, I will be happy
@PixelTavern Having played both the 360 and Wii, the Wii version has a lot more content and feels a lot more complete to me.
@Dpishere Its amazing as a SW fan, i hope they can port all the games they can over but yes Battlefront 1/2 would be incredible, having those classics on the go would be the best.
I have it on Wii. Really fun.
Will wait for reviews as always
Man I just want rogue squadron! Even the pc version of the n64 one works. Though game cube remastered is the real deal.
Between the PS3 version and the PSP version that I've played in the past, this one definitely takes after the PSP version.
This game's opening segment is worth it, itself. Throwing and killing wookies as Vader. C'mon.
Wasn't expecting them to bring Force Unleashed over, let alone the Wii version of the game.
Give me Battlefront II Classic please and thank you. That's all I need.
I remember this game looking... way better as a teenager. Hahaha!!
I learned my lesson after KOTOR. Holding off for LRG to announce a physical release, I'll get it then instead. Still, always great to see more classic Star Wars games come to Switch!
How is this game considered a classic it's only 14 years old. A classic is like maybe 20 years the earliest. You don't see a car from 2008 driving down the street and say look at that classic car.
@Snatcher I played both the PC and Wii versions to death and I can say that it was great fun swinging the Wii remote around and pretending to be a Jedi.
The Wii version was the best way to play TFU because of motion controls. The switch should be better in that department
Honestly I would love to play this but it's a couple weeks before Lego Star Wars
hopefully the graphics is upgraded as well since switch is way more powerful then the wii.
@Davzilla order the LRG version like I’m gonna do for some reason and you can play Lego Star Wars like 3,720 times before you get your copy of TFU.
Sadly this is not a remake of the excellent Gamecube Rogue Squadron or Rebel Strike
@Krambo42 what is the lrg version?
@Davzilla it is inevitable that Limited Run Games will announce a physical version. They have done them for every old Star Wars game that has come to Switch so far. Very cool, but it takes so long to get ‘em.
Also, it hasn’t officially been announced yet, but I’m sure it’s coming. My guess is they’ll announce it a week or two after it releases digitally.
I have this both on the Wii and the DS. Even though I played the heck out of the DS version, I think the Wii version is superior.
Although, if memory serves me correctly, even the Wii version is different from the versions we go on Xbox 360 and PS3, and that the definitive way to play it is on those platforms, unsurprisingly.
But it would be nice if we also got The Force Unleashed 2 with this.
"We're bringing Force Unleashed to Switch"
Yay!
"The Wii edition"
I retract my "yay"
@Snatcher I played the Mac port years ago. I thought it was fun for what it was. At least up to that point, I thought it was the closest thing to Star Wars meets Dynasty Warriors.
Enhanced from the Wii version? If I recall, it was already inferior at the time to its PS3 counterpart. It's on Steam
Wait, whaaat?! This is the Wii version? Why in seven hells would they bring over the inferior version of the game? The PS3/Xbox 360 version looks beautiful and would have looked just as good or better with a remaster on Nintendo Switch. Such a baffling decision. Now I'm really disappointed.
Switch version only that's sourced from the Wii port?
Hard pass, will wait until this is ported to PS5/PS4.
Somebody out there please port the Factor 5 GameCube Star Wars games PLEASE!! Thx ☺️
Hopefully the PS3 version will come to PS4.
I was delighted by the announcement but perplexed by the low-poly look of the trailer. The Wii port explains it. There's no reason the Switch can't handle the original HD version, but I'm actually happy Aspyr is taking this route.
As usual, I'll wait for the inevitable Limited Run announcement to buy the physical version, which I will receive sometime in 2025.
Lost me at Wii version.
Why the heck are they doing the Wii version. This was legit the only thing from the direct I was interested in.guess lego Star Wars is back to being the only game I buy this year unless Nintendo gets their act together on botw2
Everyone seems to be a bit pessimistic about the game being a Wii port, though I do wonder this, and if anyone's in game dev, help me out here:
Isn't the Wii version developed on hardware at the level of PS3/Xbox 360, then downscales to fit the Wii? Because if so, wouldn't they just take that development version rather than the actual Wii version?
From what I've heard over the years the Wii version is the superior version. Which is odd to say the least but I wonder if it shares a similar reasoning as Sonic Unleashed, the PS2/Wii port being so cutdown on content it actually removes all the nonsense long werehog levels from the 'HD' versions. IMO I've never seen this as a win, less content means less game for the same price.
I played both games on the Wii, while my brother played the PC versions. I was completely fine with the games on Wii. The first one was uglier, yes, but it had darn good motion controls and I loved every minute of them!
The second removed the motion controls, but was probably the best-looking 3rd party Wii game I'd seen.
I'll probably skip this, unless it goes on a deep sale on some point, but I'm glad to see it here.
@SuperToadie Simple! "Motion controls"
@T-Rexy im seeing similar comments elsewhere. Interesting that it had more content for the wii. I only ever played the 360 version so I dont know the differences.
@Tasuki So are you saying that Super Mario Bros gained classic status only at 2005? We thought it was a classic at '95
Acutally had this one on wii back in the day
If the motion control enhancements include 1-to-1 lightsaber combat (like we've always wanted since the Wii was first announced), I'll have to break my usual rule against double-dipping on ports/remasters.
@Ryu_Niiyama Why would you want the second game?! The sequel absolutely sucks!
@PixelTavern @Brady1138 @sleepinglion @SuperToadie @blindsquarel No, the Wii version was always the best one!
Obviously, they're using the Wii version, since it's already designed around motion controls, and the excellent motion controls was the main reason the Wii version was superior in the first place despite the downgraded graphics and physics, stuff that will be significantly improved with this remaster anyway.
Besides, the Wii version has an extra level that was never added to the other versions, has an cool exclusive multiplayer mode that they're bringing back, and the extremely frustrating part where you pull down a Star Destroyer in the other versions is relegated to a cutscene in the Wii version.
@BulbasaurusRex because it’s the second game in the series.
@Ryu_Niiyama Yes, the second game that nobody likes and left a lot of plot questions that were never resolved and never will be after the canon reset. The only good thing it has going for it is allowing you to choose to replay any level you've beaten whenever you want.
@AlienX The reasoning is as I've already mentioned: the Wii version has the excellent motion controls that make the game so much fun to play, and it actually has more content than the other versions rather than less.
@BulbasaurusRex “nobody” is a blanket generalization. And it doesn’t actually apply to all users. I stated I wanted both, you asked why and I answered. I still want both. I’m sorry you don’t like the second game.
@Ryu_Niiyama Fine, most people don't like the second game. You may be in the small minority there, but they'd never make a profit trying to bring back a mostly disliked game.
Besides, you didn't actually give a real reason as to why you wanted it. Just because a sequel exists isn't a good reason to bring it back if it sucks.
@BulbasaurusRex my real reason is there are two games. I want both. Full stop. I don’t understand why you seem to require some sort of justification other than I am making a decision as a consumer. How other people in your anecdotal example feel about the game has little bearing on my purchases. Have a fantastic day.
I had this on PS3 and really enjoyed. For some reason, however, I don't remember it looking as bad as it does in the Direct trailer.
Skip. Crap version and “motion controls” is not enough to save it.
Skip. Not canon. It was great the first time around, but now it's just a pointless story.
Why is everyone so excited about the Wii version? Was it any better than PS3/360 from its gameplay? Those had some pretty sweet procedurally generated animations, as well as for the time sophisticated materials and physics systems. The story was good as well, though nobody beats Kyle Katarn imho.
@Fairburne I'm with you my man, But Battlefront 2 (Classic) was the best in that whole series! Light years better then anything StarWars in the last 7 years!!
@Brady1138 The Wii version was the best 1 mate! Did you not play it before? The 360 version looked good, that was about it!!
p.s. I have both.
@tameshiyaku apparently the Wii version, while it doesn't have great graphics compared to the 360 and PS3 versions of the game (which is to be expected), The Wii version apparently had some extra levels, motion controls (so basically you can swing the lightsaber around and the Nunchuck is used for the Force attacks) . It also had the exclusive Duel mode iirc.
Basically the while the Wii version had not so great graphics, it also had more content too compared to 360 and PS3. Also the gameplay for the Wii is fun so there is that.
@Brad_Hogan I'll be honest, I haven't! I've always assumed it was a watered down port like most third party games ported to Wii at the time. Hope to be pleasantly surprised though.
Yes my man, give it a go. Its pretty good! The 2 player mode is wicked!!
