It seems like a lot of the 'end of year' stuff is happening a little earlier, and Nintendo is pitching in by launching its rather neat 'Year in Review' website.
If you go to the official page while logged into your Nintendo Account it summarises your play activity and breaks it down into all sorts of stats. You can see how many games you played, how many were 'new', and of course your most played games in terms of hours. You also get a percentage showing your docked / portable split, for example.
There are some interesting details; this scribe's 'busiest month' was October, for obvious reasons.
Be sure to check it out and share some of your stats in the comments!

Doesn’t seem to work on my phone. The page glitches out.
Edit: ah if I am quick enough and pause the auto play before it can do anything, I can view it fine.
My stats include: "Oops. We ran into some trouble loading your personal stats. Sorry about that! Please check again later to see them."
Yeah I don’t know if I really want to know this info. Could be very frightening.
This seems to be very inaccurate for me. It says I’ve played docked and handheld almost equally yet I very rarely play in handheld. Does it count time in sleep mode or downloading data while in handheld mode? My hours for my most played games are also vastly off from what my Switch says. It’s a neat little review but… doesn’t seem accurate, unfortunately.
Apparently I've lost 15.4 days just playing my Switch this year, and just under a month in 2020.
I feel slightly ill now but I guess it's good to know.
Breath of the wild was my most played game this year. I had a massive push to finish it and you can tell because I put 89 hours in which added to my total of 115 hours in general of the game. So many hours, wasted!
Monster hunter rise took top spot for most time played. My time spent in docked vs handheld mode is almost even. It’s a cool infographic and I should probably reevaluate how much time I spend gaming… but hey I had fun!
Nothing for Australia as usual which is annoying.
All I know is I've currently played 101 different Switch games so far this year for... a lot of hours.
"Here are a few games we think you might like:"
"Just Dance 2022"
How they hell did they come to that conclusion?
another year and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is once again my most played game of 2021 🥳🎮🏎!
Damn.. my most played game was Aokana: Four Rhythms Across the Blue with 98 hours. My favorite game is obviously Doki Doki Literature Club Plus.
My son took my number 1 slot with 620 hours of Minecraft. Ahh, I remember when I could play 600 hours of something in a year. My own #1 was Hades with 127 hours, which isn't too shabby for a game I just started playing in November.
The hours on my Switch's play activity and the Year in Review aren't quite matching up (I'm curious if time spent in sleep mode is affecting things there), but either way my 3 most played Switch games were definitely Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Bravely Default II and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.
My top tree most played games were Pokémon Shining Pearl, Stardew Valley, and Harvest Moon One World.
And in a funny turn of events, my total playtime overall is smaller than my brothers playtime on his single most played game. Wow. (The game in question being Civilization VI)
This doesn't seem accurate. I know I put more than a couple hours into my Switch in October and November and yet it says only 2 and 3 hours for those months.
According to my stats, I played 840 hours this year (holy hell).
My top three games being The Witcher 3 (109 hours), SMT5 (106 hours), and Monster Hunter Rise (98 hours).
It's wrong for me. It doesn't show some of the games I played including Pokémon Diamond which was the game I played the most this year.
My three most played games this year in order were Fortnite, Picross S2, and Picross S. Sounds about right, haha.
I’d have to say my favorite Switch game I played this year was Metroid Dread. It was long enough to be a satisfying adventure but short enough to where it kept my attention the entire way through. It was also the first Metroid game I’ve ever played to completion and it was a blast.
Says I played 100% docked but I know that is a lie as I remember playing some Switch while I was away from my house unless it is a rounding thing and less than 0.5% was portable. Other than that seems about right.
Yeesh, I spent 11 hours playing SMT V in one day. I really no life'd that game.
Appropriately, my most played games were SMT V, MH Rise, and Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. In that order.
194 hours docked vs 452 in handheld, which sounds about right. I play a lot more on my Lite.
127 hours, down from 743 hours last year... holy ***** I played 743 hours of Switch last year? I don't remember that...
My most played game was Hades at 57 hours this year (with an 8 hour day back in January, no clue how I managed that with a family lol).
Runner ups were Smash bros (31 hours) and Sonic Genesis Collection (23 hours)
TOP ACTIVE GAMER - I got this tag on FF7 original what does this mean thanks?
I played fewer hours this year than last. I believe the primary driver of that was I worked a lot of overtime at work relative to any time in the last few years. Also, I played docked considerably more than handheld. That's very accurate.
1100 hours... Course that's multiple people playing on "my" account, since its the only one with online, but dang. 190 hours of Mario Maker 2 between me and my son, followed by MH Rise and Puyo Puyo Tetris. All in all... Lots of happy memories!
Most played game was Animal Crossing New Horizons with 102 hours. This is in great part due to the major November update and DLC, which skyrocketed my playtime.
#2 was Fenyx Rising and #3 was Pokemon Shield (because I got the DLC early on in the year). No surprises there.
My playtime on the Switch overall saw a huge decrease from last year. Last year I had 532 hours, this year 198 hours. May, June, August, and September I had 0 playtime. For some reason there was 1 hour in July, I don't remember what that was all about.
Monster Hunter Rise for 262 & 588 total hours. No shame! It’s been a great year for gaming on my end. Halo Infinite is my second most played this year already at 53 hours! Crazy. On to 2022!!
I really only played Hades on my Switch this year and not for long. Just nothing that really interested me this year for Switch. Next year should see more use though.
A quarter of my year's playtime went to Dread in October!
363 games (not sure if the 229 "new games started" are a separate statistic or not) and 917 hours played in 2021. The latter is less than the reported 1083 hours last year, but still... damn. Hard to imagine such numbers on any other hardware, even on my handhelds.
Even my docked usage surprisingly rose to 9% overall.
I always love seeing this sort of stuff! Even though it confirms I have no life. Here's my stats...
•Total play time: 849 hrs.
•Last year's play time: 849 hrs. (Excuse me?)
•Games played this year: 73
•Games played last year: 59
•Most-played game: Animal Crossing New Horizons (100 hrs.)
•Second most-played game: Nintendo 64 Online (76 hrs. - Don't judge me.)
•Third most-played game: Crash 4 (64 hrs.)
•Top month: March (119 hrs.)
•Lowest month: January (29 hrs.)
•Most active day: Saturday, March 13th. I played Crash 4 for 10 hours. (Good lord, lol.)
•673 hours docked, 176 hrs. handheld
•Favorite game this year: Mario Party Superstars (though Metroid Dread is a close second, followed by Bowser's Fury, Crash 4, and Sonic Colors Ultimate. Didn't have enough time with Monkey Ball to know where it stands. Thought it'd be my GOTY, but I was a bit let down. Honestly, I've probably enjoyed N64 Online the most, but it isn't a singular "game," so I didn't count it.)
I had about 785 hours spread over 65 games. A lot of this is from when I had eye surgery and wanted to play more games just to see what I had been missing (it was a lot).
Slay the Spire took the number one spot at around 180 hours, and is likely to continue for a while, since I just discovered there is a fourth level I need to beat.
Is there/will there be a Japanese one?
My alt-account is my most used one!
my most played this year was borderland collection with 46 hours, second one was monster hunter stories 2 39 hours and finally immortal Fenix with 39 hours as well
@Heavyarms55 same here. It says I put 0 hours into December… yet I’ve had at least three Mario Party nights with my friends at my place plus I’ve been playing a decent amount of 2K22. Something’s not consistent with the time tracking.
I feel called out 🤣
My most played game was Monster Hunter Stories at 127 hours (Followed by Shin Megami and New Pokemon Snap).
That's fine, but then they included my most active day!?
Which incidentally it was with Monster Hunters for 15 hours. Which means I literally only stopped to sleep that day...
You know, Capcom should pay me to use that as an advert. That speaks of how high quality that game was.
@JasmineDragon Sounds like the surgery went well, so that's good. I've been having some issues seeing double-vision lately whenever I look at the TV, which can make it cumbersome to play games. I messed around with my TV's settings a lot though and adjusted the gamma rays and contrast and stuff, and it's definitely more tolerable now though still a bit of a nuisance. I've seen multiple optometrists, but none of them have been able to tell me the problem. Very frustrating. Hoping it's nothing serious or that will get even worse with time. 😞
Shining pearl is already my second most played game this year.
My most active day was shortly after the release of bdsp.
only 24 hours in docked mode and 1061 in handheld
December (christmas shopping season) and summer May, June, July, are my least played months.
@Enigk I thought my handheld play time seemed a bit low, as well. Could be that if you aren't connected to wi-fi, it isn't able to track it or something. Not sure, though.
@mariomaster96 Could be worse. I was recommended Just Dance too, but also Race With Ryan and PAW Patrol, lol.
Most played for me were Hyrule Warriors, BOTW, and Metroid: Dread.
My recommended were also terrible, but the upcoming games make 2022 look fantastic.
Kingdoms of Amalur, 208 hours.
"Top active player" it says.
What? In the world?
12 games (down from 26 last year).
220 hours (down from 345 last year).
52 in XC:DE, 43 in SMTV, 30 in ACNH.
5 hours in one day for SMTV
100% playtime docked.
101 games
866 hours
386 in Olive Town, 116 in AoC,106 in Katanakami
15 hours in great ace attorney
587 hours docked, 279 handheld
277 hours overall, up by 16 hours in 2020…. Pokemon shield took no.1 most played with 113, skyward sword no.2 with 47.
Doesn’t sound too bad, until I start adding time played on other consoles then I look like the no life that I really am.
I know I got 50+ hours on sekiro and Dragon Age Origins, 30+ on pillars of eternity and halo infinite, 20+ on Deaths door, Pyschonauts 1 + 2, Forza horizon 5 and Resident Evil 8, and of course a bunch of other shorter games like little nightmares 1 + 2 and Metroid dread… maybe 2022 I’ll get a life if Arceus, Elden ring, Splatoon, god of war, Silksong, nobody saves the world, starfield and Zelda all suffer major delays to 23 but something tells me they won’t.
36 games (2020 : 47 games)
976 hours (2020 : 2567 hours)
306h in Animal Crossing : New Horizons
155h in WarioWare : Get It Together !
120h in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
84% of playtime in Docked mode, 16% in handheld mode
My playtime nosedived in April when my son was born. I am totally unsurprised.
@Not_Soos I was definitely connected to WiFi as it updated SNES online games when I loaded that up and played some Pac Man 99.
712 hours, BAYBEEEE
872 hours
1. Grindstone - 94
2. Undermine - 85
3. Bug Fables - 84
100 % handheld mode
Only around 100 hours. Was a busy year
Apparently I was a/the top active player for Lonely Mountains: Downhill
My top three games were Fire Emblem Three Houses (432 hours and the most active player apparently), Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age (94 hours) and Hades (92 hours), however I feel that's somewhat inaccurate. My Switch says 3H is only 385, Hades is 80 and DQ is 75. I also played SMT V for 105 hours before this so I feel that should be ahead of Dragon Quest and Hades. Still scares me how much I've played my Switch this year compared to 2018, 2019 and 2020, my interest just suddenly revived on the system this year and the OLED coming out has only caused that to grow further.
142 hours: Smash Bros
103 hours: Persona 5 Strikers
98 hours: Minecraft
So apparently I didn't play squat worth anything this year, cause Shield took up 70% of my play time and I literally began 3 weeks ago after my stint of my old file being blown up for turning my system in to have a fan replaced.
So literally, of my top three, I have SMTV in second with 57 hours. Only thing I am proud of right now.
Spoils from the Switch phoning home to spy on Nintendo customers. I'm glad I got to disable that in the EU because of GDPR! (https://accounts.nintendo.com/analytics/opt_in)
Most played
World War Z, and it just got a gyro aiming patch and still needs to get the Marseille update, so definitely not done with it.
Second, another Saber port, Snowrunner. Just under a hundred hours, but I read playing over a hundred makes trucks disappear, so I don't really want to go on even though I actually do want to.
Third: Labyrinth of Refrain, that I got physically dirt cheap on their own online store, while the digital was on sale yet still much more expensive...
I guess fourth would be Dying Light. Well, Saber is killing it. Or Techland, as they also made one of my other favourite Switch fps's, Call of Juarez Gunslinger. Too bad Dying Light's gyro aim is not correctly implemented for handheld, while WWZ and CoJ Gunslinger work perfectly fine.
They sent me an email and I have 204 hours on my legit Switch, no idea how much on my hacked Switch but it is probably more than 204.
I logged 462 total hours this year! Xenoblade Chronicles DE was my top game (134 hours), THPS 1+2 was second (76 hours), and Mario 3D All-Stars was third (36 hours).
598 hours for me and 75 games which is more than 2020 surprisingly. I also find 75 quite shocking. Do individual NSO games count?
I think the increased playtime is because I’ve played my 3DS and Vita less, and also as my son started getting interested (he’s back into Lego for now though).
My top 3 played games were:
SMT V (73 hours)
Mario Maker 2 (my son that one, 72 hours).
SMT III (54 hours)
I have a love/hate relationship with these. It's always so interesting to see the games i played over the year but conversely i always feel so guilty when I see just how much time I spent not doing anything productive lol
I don't need to look at this, I've spent 280 hours on MH Rise this year. No game has even come within 150 hours of that this year.
In total i think I've spent around 3k hours, possibly a bit more on various different games over the last 3 years and 10 months that I've owned it for.
It seems a bit wrong. It’s missing Super Mario 3D World for me, which was easily my second most played game of the year
430 hours, a bit less than the 677 hours from 2020, which is to be expected as I got vaccinated and did more things non-video game related.
Final Fantasy VII was my most played game at 50 hours.
I played 70 games total.
Funny, I had an exact 50/50 split of portable and docked.
Most played game... Sky. Apparently almost 10 times as much as any other game this year haha. I think I've left it on a lot to collect "light".
Second/third game: Metroid Dread with 20+ hours and Super Mario Deluxe likewise (playing with son). Quite a gap.
Not surprisingly, my most played game was Fuze4 with 734 hours, my second most was Genesis Noir with only ten hours, followed by Knights and Bikes with six hours.
28 games played, with Neo: The World Ends with You taking top spot with 105 hours, followed by Stardew Valley with 80, and ACNH with 59.
Much less time spent playing than last year, but seeing I got Neo up there so easily (and played 11 hours of it one day) makes happy ha.
I manage to shave off 100 hours from last year, we've gone from "extremely unhealty" to "very unhealthy"
@Mii_duck you think that's bad,
I got top active player for
METROID F****** DREAD
My top 3 are all Visual Novels. Unsurprising since I had a newborn this year and those are easiest to play with one hand.
My longest play time in a single day was on my birthday. I was supposedly working that day. A little personal victory there.
Overall my Switch playtime was up 28%. My 3DS and Wii U probably losing out a bit there.
No wild numbers for me - most played was Metroid Dread at 46 hrs, second was Dragon Quest Builders at 45 (helped by my son a bit there, him asking to watch me play and then even have a go himself a bit), and third was Rocket League at 40. Lots of games bought though that have hardly been touched.
@DeathByLasagna The data was taken as up to and including 29/11/21, so no December data will show until next year's.
@gcunit Gotcha, thanks for the info!
720 hours, compared to 635 last year. I am amazed I played that much on either year. My most played game this year was Skyrim with 200 hours coming mostly from July...
Looking at these figures makes me sad. I am hoping my PS4 playtime looks better, though I think a good chunk of that will go to P5 Strikers...
Actually, mentioning that makes me wonder how much time I have spent in total playing games over the past few years.
780+ hours for ACNH.
So my top 3 most-played games are roguelites (unsurprisingly):
1. Darkest Dungeon (381 hours, 'top active player')
2. Slay the Spire (264 hours)
3. Monster Train First Class (214 hours, 'top active player')
But seriously, what does 'top active player' mean?
Total hours for me this year is 1,361 (swap the middle numbers and you get my hours for last year, 1,631 lol).
Just had another look, and saw the hourly break down every month. I spent 6 hours on my Switch in May and 10 hours in June. Damn, the drought was real. Skyrim really did carry my Switch this year. For context, it looks like I put 87 hours in on April, but looking through my monthly summaries, I can blame a spate of Minecraft.
I messed around with my TV's settings a lot though and adjusted the gamma rays and contrast and stuff
@Not_Soos ... your TV is emitting gamma rays? In that case, I fear you have greater problems than contrast...
This year: 464 hours total on dozens of different games.
Last year: Over 500 hours just on ACNH plus 400 hours on different games.
My most played games this year were ACNH('only' 45 hours), Rogue Legacy, and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond.
Also, it suggested I play a game called Space Otter Charlie which I have never heard of.
@CANOEberry I dunno, there's a setting that just says "Gamma" and I put it on low. It's an LG TV. Is that not like industry standard? I know nothing about it.
Mines not working soooo, Idk.
Nobody’s at all troubled by the fact that they have been collecting this much information on your activity, even though the majority of your games have been single player?
@CANOEberry geez, I don’t think he’s going to have the same result as Bruce Banner with that. 😂😁
Somehow Bravely Default II was my most played game this year, despite the fact that I barely touched the thing since I beat it.
I also have 69 hours in Great Ace Attorney. Time to never touch that game again, so that it may always stay like that forever.
@Not_Soos I hope they can figure it out for you soon. I have one of those problems where every eye doctor I've seen looks at my diagnostics and says "I've never seen anything like this before", so I'm familiar with that kind of frustration.
My surgery was for cataracts which started developing late last year, because I didn't have enough issues 😥. At least the cataracts were a fixable problem. The surgery was amazing and now I have perfect distance vision in my one visual eye. Playing games on TV post-surgery was a major revelation. I still need glasses for reading and playing handheld, and my other eye (the mystery problem) can't be fixed, but having one eye that works perfectly for distance only is a hell of a lot better than just being blind, so I am thankful for modern medicine.
@FuzzBall And the reason to be troubled by play data would be...?
A few people seemingly have no occupation, or leave their Switch idling. 1,000 hours = 41.66 complete days. Given that we spend about 107 days sleeping every year, that only leaves 217 days to do anything but sleep and Switch.
Some of ya'll need to put the video games down once in a while.
My playtime in November neatly doubled that of the previous highest month due to SMTV releasing lol
My biggest game was Atelier Ryza 2 for 44 hours. After than Mario 64 with 14 and Famicom Detective Club with 6. Biggest month was February obviously since Ryza 2 was released in that month. After the 44 hours of Ryza 2 I bought it also on PS4 where I got the platinum trophy and when I finally got my PS5 I played it there again. I did not play much of my Switch this year. This was because of me getting a PS5 and resident evil village which I played more than Ryza actually.
Wish I could. My account suffers from a bug where I'm able to log in.. for a full second.
No matter the device or browser, for some reason I get logged out immediately after logging in.
Mario Maker 2 was my most played, for 563 hours. Smash was 227 hours, then BotW was 58 hours.
@gcunit I don’t recall them asking to collect that. It doesn’t matter how irrelevant the data seams, they shouldn’t be collecting it.
@ShePenny @gcunit For context, the average person worldwide spends about 2.5 hours a day watching TV, which adds up to over 900 hours a year. This is a worldwide average of all people who own TVs. In the US and most European countries, the average is closer to 1500 hours a year.
@gcunit Never understood how people had over 9,000 hours in Animal Crossing New Horizons within it's first year, when I'm lucky to even breech 100 in a game I absolutely love.
I gotta play the Switch more. 60 hours for the whole year. Funny thing is I got 59 hours last year. XD
(Sadly I am too "stuck" on my laptop most of the time...)
Most played game: Baldo the Guardian Owls with about 80 hours...
Not if you ain’t sharing stats with Nintendo. Grinch and proud of it!
I miss the Activity Log apps from the 3DS and Wii U.
Miss the Everybody Votes Channel and internet browsers too.
So... 1442 hours in Splatoon 2 last year (mostly all I played).
Only 315 hours of Splatoon 2 this year...welp, guess I’m ready for Splatoon 3
@JasmineDragon Sorry to hear that
Doesn't seem to work for me. Perhaps Australian accounts miss out.
Ha, I got "Docked" vs "Portable" at exactly 50-50
Day I played the most: October 8th (gee, I wonder why that might be )
Most played games:
Ring Fit Adventure - 76 hours,
Ys IX - 45 hours,
Metroid Dread - 36 hours.
Overall, I've played more than last year, so that's nice.
Got top active player for Ring Fit Adventure, so that feels nice (I think?).
14 Games, 68 hours lol. A good chunk of that was my kids playing on my account! My interest in the switch had gone down considerably more than I thought. Hopefully get some big games in 2022
I would love to access this on the actual console like the play log on 3DS
My stats are down much more this year.
Two years in a row ACNH is my most played game. 599 hours (972 last year), with overall Switch usage at 795 hours for the year (1389 last year).
Interesting stats. Nearly 1,000 hours total playtime, which isn't too shabby considering I work and took a full school course load online all throughout the year. Switch is my only platform, though, so no competition for my gaming time. Animal Crossing remains my most played title and I spent over twice as much time in handheld mode compared to docked. Honestly surprised it isn't higher than that.
1. Monster Hunter: Rise - 162 hours
2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 90 hours
3. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 22 hours
Total hours played: 431. A lot less than last year, but I moved places so that explains it all.
Despite having played an awful lot this year, apparently there isn't enough data to give me stats. I can only assume transferring to a new console has screwed it up, or they write you off if you happen to have changed your eshop region.
1. Neo: The World Ends With You - 96 hours
2. Monster Hunter Rise - 71 hours
3. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond - 51 hours
631 hours in total (684 last year)
August was my most active month at 96 hours (Neo TWEWY came at the end of July and I was busy for the first few days after launch so that makes sense).
About what I expected. My most-played game last year was Xenoblade Definitive Edition with 104 hours, and I'm pretty sure my most-played in 2019 was Dragon Quest XIS, so that's my three favorite game series all represented as my most-played games for the last three years. That's a pretty fun detail, I'm very happy my Switch now has an entry in each of those series (Xenoblade, TWEWY, DQ)
Not to shabby, just under 1000 hours overall, with Minecraft(as expected) being #1 this year since one of my sons tried to claim my switch last summer and that’s all we played all summer. 60/40 docked to portable. Dark souls and botw were 2 and 3 respectively. Not bad year of gaming since I played 64 games over 37 year prior.
I only played 327 hours on the Switch this year, compared to the 585 hours from last year.
My top three games most played this year are...
1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
2. Pac-Man 99
3. Nexomon Extinction
@Eel Mines loading and then a blinding white, empty page so I feel that lol
