We all know that gaming is a hobby suited to anyone and everyone from all walks of life, but with the majority of successful streamers and gaming internet personalities being young, trendy 'influencers' these days, it's nice to see some different representation.
Introducing Food4Dogs, a New Zealand-based YouTuber who might not be your typical shouty internet 'gamer' at first glance, but offers wonderful insight and passion for the games industry in her videos. After gaining renewed popularity thanks to a recent Xbox Series S impressions video, Food4Dogs has been busy releasing unboxing videos and lengthy discussions about her love of all things gaming.
We can't help but be reminded of Audrey, the fan-dubbed 'Animal Crossing Grandma' who won people over with her heartwarming attitude towards our favourite hobby. It's incredibly refreshing to hear games be discussed in such a relaxed, positive light, and we're absolutely here for it.
If you're into the Shin Megami Tensei series and have been looking forward to Shin Megami Tensei V on Switch, we'd urge you to give the video a watch. We sadly can't embed it on the site, but you can find the link here.
Thanks to xmkbest for the tip!

I've been following her for a while now and not only she is the sweetest person on the internet, but her knowledge and passion for jrpgs is astounding.
I also follow her. She is such a joy. Really great content.
And a Kiwi at that. Will definitely keep an eye out.
Shin Megrandma Tensei ❤️
@CharlieGirl Darn, you beat me to it! That would have made for such a funny tagline haha
Not that I mind in the slightest, I noticed that she stopped following me as soon as I stopped covering PS Vita stuff over on Twitter. She must have moved on to Switch as well now though.
We spoke a few times and I can also attest to the fact that she’s a nice lady. I’m just happy that our wonderful hobby is shared by such a diverse age group. I’m knocking on the door of the big FIVE-O myself now and I certainly won’t be giving up my favourite pastime any time soon!
@CharlieGirl Shin Megrandma Tensei… Haha, that’s brilliant!
Shin MegRaNNY Tensei 4Dogs
yeap, me too.. I knew her from xenoblade before! such a sweet person!! while she crush on jrpgs, by mom struggles to unlock an Iphone... lol
Paid for by Friends of Shin Megami Tensei Noctourne.
I don't think it's appropriate to 1. assume she's a grandmother, and 2. to draw attention to her age.
She's a person.
I love it when older people are so passionate about games!
@CharlieGirl nice pun! xD
@wanghosom
I wouldn't necessarily assume that. She censors innocent comments quite a lot.
@Jamie_R Who drew attention to her age? Actually the entire article does not mention once what her age is. Which makes it even weirder to assume that she is a grandma.
I like to think there will be many more people like her as my generation and the several below me grow up. Age is irrelevant though as we can enjoy all sorts of things at any age. Grateful that she can share her passion!
Cool to see someone like her to collect games.
But after seeing her videos I guess that's it, she doesn't really play them but collects which is fine, but some people that comment on her videos truly think she plays these games.
...I know this sounds mean but it is not, what she does is fine but people made up this assumption around her actually playing all these stuff.
@Jamie_R probably because she is searching for a certain type of audience?
I once commented on her video saying she made a small mistake, few days later I could not find that comment anymore.
But oh well, internet in a nutshell.
She is a big fan of Xenoblade Chronicles X, it's understandable why she likes turn based RPG - it requires less dexterity with the fingers, easier for her age.
surprises me to see an old lady like modern RPG's
@chipia I would argue that creating an entire article about somebody because they do a thing that people in their age group don't typically do is drawing attention to their age, even if not giving a specific age.
Wow she is fully legit. Love her
@KBuckley27 SMTV is kind of old-school in modern trappings though. At its core it's still got those early-ninteties gears churning.
This is astounding and fantastic. I immediately subscribed.
Based, SMTV has been epic!
I found out about her through Happy Console Gamer last year. She runs a really pleasant channel. I binged a lot of her videos during lockdown, it was a great respite from everything that was (and in some cases still is) happening in the world.
I don't like JRPGs as much as she does, but I really enjoy listening to her talk about them.
At least when I become a old man I don’t get strange looks for still playing video games.🤣
Damn she's so cool!
My Grandmother just liked a pinot grigio in the afternoon and some murder mysteries in the evenings 😂
I saw this video the other day. I've seen some of her videos before too. Food4Dogs is really a wholesome YouTuber from the videos I've seen, she has passion for the games she plays and I love it!
Not surprised she snagged this. I've been following her for a while on youtube, and she seems to be a huge fan of Japanese games. A lot of PS Vita content, in particular. Very cool old woman.
Video games are for everyone. I hope people like her inspire other seniors with an interest in the medium to share that passion online.
I only listened for a couple of minutes, and it sounds so surreal (in an endearing way) hearing a significantly older person effectively geek out over JRPGs of all things. I'll definitely have to check more later.
It also does put into perspective that folks playing hardcore games in their 70s and beyond will likely be the norm the further along we go. The market of "easily tricked grandparents buying the wrong games for their grandkids" will shrink substantially in the next 20-30 years!
I found her channel awhile back when she did a video on Xenoblade. So nice to see her passion for JRPGs.
I have been following her for a while! She also likes visual novels and otome games~ I will be just like her when I'm older I already know it!
I just assumed everyone on this site was already subscribed to her.
She reminds me that in life, when it comes to experiencing the joy of uncovering lands beyond new horizons, age is really just a number.
This lady is awesome!
She has an entire SMT collection. Except SMTIV on 3DS, since that released digital only in New Zealand where she lives.
@NoTinderLife I'm 58 and you got it right. My reflexes aren't what they used to be so it is turn based JRPGs and SRPGs most of the time now, though I can still do well at games like Diablo. Regardless, I've been playing RPGs since my C64 days and Shin Megami Tensei series is my favorite. Digital Devil Saga and Strange Journey in particular...
Remember that Dead Space 2 ad campaign where they'd show old ladies reacting to footage from the game, in an effort to show how hardcore and scary it was? That was funny, and very dumb.
Anyway, this lady seems cool.
She already went viral when she did a video on the Xenoblade Chronicles collectors edition and she got so much unwanted attention out of it she disabled comments on her videos.
Britta (food4dogs) is a retired IT professional as well (I believe she was a server admin/tech). She has a video where she talks about how she got into gaming via a PS3 she won in a raffle that she tried to get rid of many times but that PS3 had other plans. Its a really endearing video. I've been subbed for a couple of years and her channel is incredibly wholesome.
Britta hates only one thing in the world and that's being called Granma, that's one of the reasons she turned off the comments after the article on her many years ago. Somehow now this article is ignoring her sensibility and going down that path again for the glory of mediocre title tag... Hoping she doesn't turn off the comments again because of the new influx of people calling her granma.
@Rayquaza2510 what an uninformed assumption...
She has a really detailed video on how she got into gaming and covered in many small instances her approaches to play. She started with digital games and the affection for physical copies came way later.
She is not a speedrunner nor a completionist and while there is definitely a collector side to her, she specifies the really few times in which she acquired something just for collection. In almost all her reviews she describes her first few hours with the game she is covering and if she thinks she'll keep up with it or not.
I've hit the big 6-0 and am grateful that I can still play and beat games like Metroid Dread. Nothing lasts forever, but I do play turn based RPGs as well. And there's always Picross, which is my puzzle addiction.
I have seen her videos. She really loves JRPGs a lot.
@Rayquaza2510 I like her videos (apart from the over zealous jump-cuts every couple of seconds) but completely agree with your perspective on the censoring - it’s out of control. If anyone disagrees with anything she says they are immediately banned. That’s not how anyone should behave online. People need to have a level of tolerance when putting themselves out into the public sphere and hear other perspectives.
@chipia They’ve changed the by-line or whatever it’s called. It assumed she is a grandmother.
@KBuckley27 She’s not ‘old’ - she’s a person. Simple as that.
Yes I love Food4Dogs!! She's so sweet and I love her passion for games, her videos are just nice and warm to watch.
Keep in mind that her generation created the whole dang art form. We're just visitors to her world.
Take my dad for example. My dad is an avid gamer and he just turned 74.
Yeah. He still plays casual games like Angry Birds to unwind after a long day at the office; He's a CFO. However, when the weekend comes or there's nothing on TV/streaming... He's the king of FPSers like Doom Eternal and open world games like RDR2. ATM, he's just (not so) patiently waiting for his Dying Light 2 preorder to unlock.
Mom's 76 now. She's been hospitalized for the past year. COVID f***ed her up hard and, well, she's not the same anymore.
However, up until last year, she was a casual sort of gamer. She had the arcade classics on her PC and when she wanted to unwind with the family... HOLY SH**! I have no idea where she got her Street Fighter & Tekken skills from. That chick was straight up brutal. LOL Mom would gleefully kick my @$$ every time. Mind you, I used to hustle other kids for their lunch money at the arcade when I was young. Mom's just a natural.
Gamers come in all ages and shapes. Again, my parent's generation created video games. It's their world and we're just living in it.
I checked out a couple of her videos recently, but she speaks so slowly that I was starting to 😴
I love this woman! Hope she enjoys SMTV!
@The_Pixel_King ah yes! - Food4Dogs. I remember her from the Vita days. Very nice up until the point you disagree with her opinion regardless of the manners you use..
Reminds me also of Grandma Shirley who uploads videos of her playing Elder Scrolls etc. on YouTube. Lovely to see people access hobbies they might not normally due to generational difference or stigma.
@Jamie_R Mate, fully respect your perspective on the comments here but if "people need to have a level of tolerance when putting themselves out into the public sphere and hear other perspectives" then I would say you also need to stop waging a one-person war and take your own advice, no?
Again? Last time "the media" put the focus on her, it was awful. Some people think that she disabled comments due to reciving too much attention... but the thing is that she puts a lot of effort in her videos and really enjoys the games, only to people flood her comments pointing at "how old" she is, people doubting she really plays games, and even insults. That's what happens with all that media attention.
@Maximumbeans No issue with people having varying perspectives, so long as they don't cause offence.
I'm also not blocking or censoring people.
@Jamie_R umm old is literally a descriptive word which seems wholly appropriate when describing this person… who is an older person lol so I don’t think anyone who described her as old was being offensive to her knowingly or unknowingly I just think you are trying to cause offence which I find offensive. 😜
Definitely not someone you'd expect to be a hardcore JRPG collector.... Folks, this is future us....
I know it's not meant this way, but it comes across as a little ageist comparing her to Audrey. The only thing they have in common is being old, really. Even the video game connection is spurious as Audrey isn't a content creator, doesn't run a channel, isn't a videogame/JRPG fanatic, etc. I've watched Food4dogs for a couple of years now and she makes legitimate content and isn't really any different than millions of other YouTubers out there.
And the header I originally read said "You've met Animal Crossing Grandma, now it's time for Shin Megami Tensei Grandma". I'm not even sure she's an actual grandma. Her content certainly isn't about that or family. I just think she should be appreciated for the quality of her work, rather than the novelty of being old and still having modern interests.
@Edenbeast I guess you read my comment wrong, above that you should closely listen to what she says in her videos, I have the bad habit of automatically picking out mistakes and other details even if I don't want to (I blame my past for that)
Again what she does is fine, great even and what she does and claims is not the issue.
Saying "I have a uninformed assumption" is exactly the issue here, because my issues are not about her, but about what people THINK and CLAIM she does, while that is not fully the case.
Love it! And I still have to pick up a copy myself. Local EB had no stock when I went there (the bums) 😀
