I’ve heard a lot of frame rates complaints since the trailer dropped. Where are all these people coming from? Splatoon, Smash, even Zelda to an extent absolutely need high frame rates so you can keep up. What exactly are you people doing in Animal Crossing that’s so high-octane that it requires a reaction time faster than a 30th of a second? It’s five bucks, man. Not every game needs 60FPS.
@ImpromptuR I believe the quote you highlighted is to specifically address that a reader might not be familiar with the reviewer. There’s no such thing as a 100% unbiased review, so the author is providing context for a personal preference that may have influenced her conclusions about the game. The way I see it, the point being made in this review is “I have higher standards for what constitutes ‘good JRPG combat.’ Pokémon games rarely meet this standard, but this game did so, which is a point in the game’s favor worth highlighting.”
This feels like an intentional part of the hype cycle at this point. I remember that Sun & Moon demo being datamined, and it feels like this has happened with every Pokémon game since. If GF and TPC truly didn’t want this to happen, wouldn’t they have figured out how to not include the entire game in the demo at this point?
My heart skipped a beat when I skimmed the title and read “New Horizons.” I thought for a second we were finally getting more Animal Crossing content, even if it was just some Pokémon items 😢
@ShieldHero I’ll bite. Renaissance art has a lot of instances of artists inspiring each other, especially given the emphasis on realism and detail not present in earlier artistic eras. The Last Supper and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel are “similar” in the sense that they both had similar artistic goals of realism and depictions of religious imagery, but that’s where it ends. They are fundamentally different pieces in both scope and intent, and that’s quite alright.
This image is “similar” to Animal Crossing in the same way that Michelangelo’s art would be “similar” to Da Vinci’s if he had traced over The Last Supper, slightly altered the palette, and left out a few of the smaller details.
Gears 5 is cool and all man, but literally no one has brought up Wind Waker? It’s basically a Zelda game in every possible sense and they just added a little something to do between major areas, because why not? This will be a Metroid Prime game, but you’ll drive a motorcycle between certain areas rather than watching an elevator cutscene. That’s it.
This looks pretty fun, but I don’t think I would have paid $20 for Mushroom Kingdom and Luigi’s Balloon World in Odyssey, and I feel like that’s essentially what they’re asking me to do with this DLC pack.
@kal_el_07241 my brother, all of those games also changed the landscape of open world games when they released too. That doesn’t mean BOTW didn’t do the same thing later on.
@SpaceboyScreams Scarlet/Violet are really good games creatively in terms of story, gameplay structure, and Pokémon designs. I think they’re the best in those respects since the original DS.
The main problems with these games is the technical performance, which absolutely should not be a problem for a company in charge of the most successful IP on earth. Don’t misunderstand me, they should definitely be heavily critiqued for launching Scarlet/Violet in their original state.
All that to say, there’s signs that some people really did care when designing these games, even if the final product is ultimately subpar. I wouldn’t say they’re blatantly cashgrabs.
My heart wants to believe this means we’re getting a bunch of classic Pokémon soundtracks shadow dropped on Nintendo Music, but my brain knows it’s either teasing some side mode in Z-A (like the contests in Gen 3 or the restaurants in Gen 6) or some upcoming Pokémon rhythm game. Any of these options is fine actually
I have to admit that I have spent almost no time at all playing as the critters/minions. I’m really charmed by the character costumes, especially since I didn’t play Tour. I’ve spent a lot of time as Biker Wario on the Chopper, but I’ve been trying out default Pauline in the Reel Racer because that’s a pretty snazzy combination.
@SplatRay001 I’m finding myself enjoying the intermissions way more than I expected, and even I wish this was an option. Maybe they’re worried having separate queues for “with intermissions” and “without intermissions” would make it too difficult to get matched up, but I don’t think they have to stress about it. Splatoon manages just fine with FIVE queues if you include Salmon Run, and I feel like Mario Kart has just as many dedicated online players.
Anything Paper Mario would be an insane deep cut. Kammy? Goombario? Rawk Hawk? Mr L? Count Bleck? Although, maybe a little more realistically, just putting actual Paper Mario in would be pretty interesting to begin with.
@cylemmulo true. It really depends how long Nintendo sticks to the Switch branding/infrastructure, but now that you’ve got me thinking about it, the DS family lasted, what, 10-12 years?
I was very comfortable with $450 for the console. I justified $80 for MKW. But finding out the Amiibo were $30-$40 was too much for me. I’m pretty sure I’m done buying them, Yunobo or otherwise.
If they made it free for expansion pack subscribers, I’d think “That’s greedy, but I get it.” But as it is now, I think very few people will even bother to experience it.
@mikegamer @Banjo- @N00BiSH I’m hoping the free-roaming open-world driving aspect is what this upcoming direct focuses on the most. The treehouse presented it as a way to see the finer details of tracks and find shortcuts, but I got the sense they were intentionally withholding information that couldn’t be shared until the direct. What else is there to even have a full, dedicated direct about? It’s my opinion that there’s a very big aspect of this game that we don’t know about yet, and it very likely ties into the open world.
@YaGirlSkyByte I feel like the babies could have seen more prints and more use in general had they built in more value to them besides removing damage when evolving. They would be a lot more interesting if they provided a permanent buff to the Basic played on top and any subsequent stages. I’ve only played Pocket, so maybe I’m out of my mind and that’s crazy overpowered for some reason that’s going over my head, but at least on paper it seems like a way to make baby cards actually relevant.
@dew12333 Reggie at least does his own things in tech most of the time rather than claiming “I used to work at Nintendo almost a decade ago. I know exactly what’s going on in there because I’m a super expert that has insider knowledge on all of Nintendo’s secrets. For that reason, I’m going to build my entire YouTube brand around the fact that I no longer work there,” unlike a certain other duo you mentioned.
@Spider-Kev sites have been reporting that since shortly after the Wii’s release, but also yes, according to Reggie. So he’s either telling the truth, or he’s had everyone fooled for the better part of 20 years - and it’s merely a convenient coincidence that Wii Sports was not included with Wiis in Japan specifically. Like him or not, it’s difficult to argue that he didn’t contribute in this specific instance.
@Oracles_fanboi NES games were $50. Games have been $60 for about 15 years. The price increase has been on the horizon for a long time. Whether or not I’m personally happy about it is another story.
I’ve never collected a physical TCG before - so let me know if there’s some angle to this idea that makes it not work - but couldn’t they do a print-per-order sort of thing like online t-shirt/merch storefronts usually do? If you can’t find it in stock in person after the release, they could sort of keep up with demand by allowing you to order a pack that will be delivered after the next batch of prints (which would match the amount of packs ordered in this manner + whatever retailers order). That 2-6 week wait would certainly be disappointing if you wanted a couple of packs on launch day, but it seems better than the alternative of not getting it at all because the only guy that will sell it to you wants $40 per pack (and that’s just for the ones he’s already x-rayed to make sure nothing of interest was inside).
A little more than 4 years between announcement and release? Maybe there really is a chance this movie’s going to have enough genuine soul to make another Morbillion dollars.
I know this is sort of how Final Fantasy became a household name, but I feel like they’re staking A LOT on a brand new IP that’s launching as a Switch 1 exclusive.
I’m not trying to be rude, but doesn’t ARK run on Switch? Is this really more technically demanding than ARK? I only bring it up because they’ve brought up technical limitations in the past being the reason, and I’ve always figured that’s just a convenient excuse for trying to avoid a visit from Nintendo’s lawyers.
