Re: Team Friday Triumphs In Splatoon 3's Latest Splatfest

KidSparta

@HeadPirate but, I should certainly add that you’re right. It’s really worthwhile that they put in the effort to make genuinely good three-choice themes. I would guess a whole team has the time and minds to come up with way more and way better than what I came up with in a few minutes. It is objectively WAY harder to come up with 3s than This or That like they did in the previous games.

@HeadPirate
1. Liking and using are different things
2. They did in S1 and could again
3,4. I foresee no difficulty getting the rights to properties owned by the same company. They’ve already done Mushroom Vs Star.
5. This is a complex one that would probably need to be different for every region, which may be more trouble than they see as worth it.
6. lessgo!!
7. I did not know dogs went that hard globally, but I believe it (being a cat dad myself)
8. I’m not Japanese, but I presume when asked “do you prefer to spend time off at the beach, in the mountains, or in the city” they would understand the question.
9. Of course
10. Yeah, just kinda threw that in there to make it ten.

You make some good points, but I don’t think any of these would be nearly as lopsided as Gear, Grub, Fun or Nessie, Aliens, Bigfoot (the latter especially suffering from NA really being the only ones that care about Bigfoot).

I also didn’t say Japan was being odd. I think their regional Splatfests have been perfect for them; they’re just things the world can’t really relate to in day-to-day life.

Re: Team Friday Triumphs In Splatoon 3's Latest Splatfest

@swoose @HeadPirate
Planes, Trains, Automobiles (Based on an English saying, but I think the premise is universal enough).
SpongeBob, Patrick, Squidward
Mario, Luigi, Wario
Peach, Daisy, Rosalina
Baseball, Basketball, Fútbol (Regionalize that for USA if necessary)
Land, Sea, Sky
Dogs, Cats, Both (or neither? fish?)
Beach, Mountains, City (Vacations)
Squid Sisters, Off the Hook, Deep Cut (They may be saving that one for last since we’ve already had Shiver, Fry, Big Man)
Jacket, Hoodie, Sweater

I’m not saying all of those are winners, but I came up with them in five minutes. Surely a whole team with more time could come up with some good ones.

I do wonder though, if the western regions get less notice. Maybe Japan decides a theme and then the rest of the world has to decide pretty quickly if they’re doing that theme or something regional? I only say that because I feel the most oddball themes (Handshake, Fist Bump, Hug, and this most recent one) were the result of regional Splatfests.

All that aside, I would never say no to more Big Runs. I like Salmon Run even more than the normal multiplayer modes

“The Nintendo 'gigaleak' would later reveal that two subsequent Kalos journeys had been planned…”

I haven’t seen the leak myself, but do we know if this refers to an XZ & YZ scenario a la USUM or B2W2? Or is it talking about a Pokémon Z and then yet another unknown Kalos game?

In either case, it feels like these games had their opportunity cut short by the 20th anniversary, which is ironic because SuMo felt rushed to release, with USUM essentially just being everything SuMo wished to be the first time and with all the legacy content you’d expect from an anniversary game.

Re: Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2 Announced, Squidward & Jimmy Neutron Join The Roster

KidSparta

The first one had next to no casual options, and competitively it was a spam-your-best-move-simulator. Not to mention that, while not totally atrocious at launch, it was mind-boggling some of the things not implemented at that point (read: voice acting).

They really need to give it all that they’ve got this time (which does actually look promising) and get some good reviews from casual players and competitive Smashers, or it’ll be dead on arrival. Apparently there was DLC for the first one after most of us stopped paying attention.

If this doesn’t do well, I feel like we might as well call the platform-fighter genre “Smashlikes” at this point, since literally only Smash and Rivals have been able to create games in the genre with enduring appeal.

Re: Video: Pikmin Lore Is Incredibly In-Depth And Often Terrifying

KidSparta

@HeadPirate not to mention they have also sustained a nuclear disaster in recent history and are one of the countries most threatened by rising sea levels. End of the humanity through its own destruction is definitely something closer to home there than in the West, though we all would do well to be more aware, of course.

Re: Soapbox: Catching Legendary Pokémon The Old-Fashioned Way Was So Much Better

KidSparta

@crimsontadpoles there’s a set of four in particular (though, I don’t actually know whether they’re formally considered “legendaries”) that require some serious investigation to encounter. I found finding these in particular to be very refreshing compared to the massive influx of meaningless past legendaries a la SWSH DLC and USUM. It really brought me back to the likes of the legendary trio in RB or even XY which were rather easy to miss if you weren’t invested, but also not ridiculously hard to obtain if you were. A very balanced challenge IMO.

Re: Team Vanilla Wins Splatoon 3's Ice Cream-Themed Splatfest

KidSparta

@SoapMonki this tricolor map was a disaster compared to the last one. Defending team’s spawn was right at the first choke, so it was rare that attackers got through. Not that it ended up mattering that much, since my ten attempts to play tricolor all resulted in vanilla mirror matches.

Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Version 2.4.0) Character & Vehicle Performance Balance Changes Revealed

KidSparta

After the last patch, everyone was like, “Okay, Wiggle Waluigi is OUT. Now Teddy Buggy is the objective best, so pick that if you want to win!” I’m not saying that the vehicle choices should be irrelevant/cosmetic, but I really hope that this game reaches a point that there are at least a handful of viable choices by the end of patches. I don’t mean statistically identical, but multiple options worth picking depending on playstyle and/or excelling on certain tracks.

Re: Random: Get On This Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Rupee Glitch Before It's Patched

KidSparta

I’m all for the peacemaking and whatnot, but I don’t find it frustrating that people use glitches in a single player game. The actual frustration is the sheer amount of people online who talk about this obvious GOTY nominee as if it is a completely unplayable experience without them. It’s an incredible game with a flawed economy depending on who you ask. These glitches don’t make the game good - it’s already good.

Re: Talking Point: What Makes A Good Sidequest, Anyway?

KidSparta

I voted “ties to the main story,” but let me be more specific. I know it’s a video game and I have the right to play it how I want and advance the story at my own pace, but I find myself having a hard time getting invested in side quests when the main story is presented as urgent.

If the story tells me “there’s a monster attacking this town on this part of the map RIGHT NOW. Get there quick and help them!”, it feels awkward to ignore that and go play a mini game or help find somebody’s cat.

That’s a complex thing to balance though, because a good story should have some of that urgency. MM and TOTK handled it well if you ask me. MM has the urgency of the moon, but it doesn’t feel strange to spend time doing other things since you can reset the clock. TOTK says “hey, we’re looking for Zelda. Here’s the four leads we have so far.” That in itself doesn’t present urgency, even though the four phenomena themselves do once you actually get to them. It also helps that many of the sidequests actually do tie into the overarching “Find Zelda” main quest, like those you get from Penn.

Re: Everybody 1-2-Switch! Player Icon Uploads Don't Appear To Block Explicit Photos Online

KidSparta

@Lightsiyd TOTK doesn’t have any way to connect with other players online, so there’s not really something for Nintendo to stop unless they really crack down on videos and pictures uploaded to the internet. As for what’s being made, it’s nothing close to being able to literally snap a picture of anything; just the fact that you can move most objects including two round bombs and a log.

Re: Toby Fox Shares Development Update On Deltarune Chapter 3

KidSparta

What is everyone’s thoughts on waiting to play until all the chapters are released? I loved Undertale, but decided all the way back when chapter 1 of Deltarune was released to wait until all chapters of were out, but as the (worthwhile) wait gets longer and longer, I get less sure that I should postpone chapter 1 and 2.

Re: PlayStation Boss Doesn't Think Call Of Duty Appeals To Nintendo's Core Audience

KidSparta

Just because they’re not trying to outspec you and see who can pump out more greyish titles doesn’t mean they’re not in competition with you.

Almost all CODs I’ve played have been on Nintendo consoles except a brief excursion during BO1 and BO2 due to tons of people I know wanting to play together on Xbox Live. That leaves me with Finest Hour on GC, MW1 (ahem, the original MW1, that is) on Wii and DS, and WaW on Wii. Great times, especially with WaW, even despite us getting left out of zombies mode.

I also buy most Nintendo first party releases and have 600+ hours in Splatoon 3, so I guess that makes me the imaginary person Sony’s thinking of.

Re: Shuntaro Furukawa: Switch Successor Will Utilise The 'Nintendo Account' System

KidSparta

@ClaytThaGreat exactly. The assumption is being made that Furukawa is talking about NSO accounts, but he could very easily mean our Nintendo accounts, period. My Nintendo account on Switch is technically the one I made for Wii U, but that didn’t impact what I have access to on Switch at all.

Best case, though, he IS referring to NSO accounts (which I guess means the next console would have Switch in the name. Switch U? New Switch?). If this is the case, it alleviates the lack of virtual console even more, since we’d theoretically have the current NSO library and it would only keep growing.
